Canon MX870

The other day I could no longer print wirelessly on my Canon MX 870.  I have had this printer for quite some time and had no issues.  I can print if connected via USB, but I cannot do so now wirelessly.  I have use their network tool, tried to add the printer (it does not show up) and have reloaded/update Canon software.  It appears this inabilty to print wirelessly happened when I updated using Apple's App update recently.  They had a Canon printer update which I believe has impeded the ability to print wirelessly.  I have seen other posts but don't believe any address this Apple update issue.  This stated, if anyone has a work around or fix, I would appreciate it.  I have family members on the network that are also impacted.  TIA.

Updating the drivers should not have impacted your ability to see the printer via wireless. The MX870 should still be visible, even without any drivers installed.
The first suggestion is to check if the Mac can see the MX870 using the Bonjour protocol. The scanner component of the device uses this protocol, so when you select to "Add" via Print & Scan, you typically see two devices - the MX870 printer and the MX870 scanner.
To check for devices on your network using Bonjour you can use Safari. With the browser open, you will need to enable the Bonjour view. To do this, open Safari > Preferences  and select Bookmarks. Then enable Bonjour for the Bookmarks view. This will make the Bonjour bookmark appear on the Bookmarks bar. Select this and the MX870 should be listed under the Bookmark. Do you see it? If you do see it, select it. This will connect you to the internal web page of the MX870 and confirms that the Mac and MX870 are connected to the same network.
If you don't see the MX870 then check the network settings in the MX. If they are correct for you network, try turning off the MX for a minute and then back on again. Now try the Safari test again.
When the device is visible in Safari then it should also be visible in the Add printer browser. So if you open Print & Scan and click the plus button, does the MX now appear in the Add printer window?

After installing Mountain Lion, I tried to scan from my Canon MX870 and received the message: "MP Navigator EX quit unexpectedly. Click Reopen to open the application again. A report will be sent to Apple,"  This problem happened right after I installed Mountain Lion. I then downloaded Canon's upgraded software and drivers for the MX 870 and the problem was resolved. Now one month later, the problem has returned.

Solved problem with original Canon software.  When I downloaded Canon software upgraded for OS X 10.8, I got all by Navigator Ex. Noticed that on Canon's site, the upgraded version is 3.1; my app was 2.1. Upgraded to 3.1 for Nav. Ex, and it works.
You should still use Image Capture IMHO.  If it was my gear, that's what I would do.  No need to worry about software upgrades.

  • Help with Canon MX870 - scanner stopped working

    Hi,
I bought a Canon Pixma MX870 printer/scanner a month or so ago and it was working fine up till this week. I had installed the Canon software and ran the OS X Software updpate when setting it up.
All of a sudden last week I couldn't print. It kept saying the printer couldn't be found. So I downloaded the Apple Canon printer software and reinstalled it thinking it couldn't do any harm. The printer is working again. The scanner not so much. If I do manage to get it to work (either by using the scanner from System preference > Print/Fax > and choosing open scanner or by using the MP Navigator it typically now will only work 1 time. After that it says "scanner not found" and sometimes if I close and reopen the scanner from Print/Fax it says "trying to open scanner session".
I know the MX870 is connected to the network. The blue wifi light is lit, it shows in the router's list of connected devicies, it also shows in Safari's list of Bonjour Devices.
I need this machine to scan and play nice with OS X - I need to scan more than print.
I ran Disk Warrior, ran chrons to do maintenance and fix permissions etc. I tried deleting and re- adding the scanner. That didn't work and I had to restore it from backup.
Anyone have any ideas on what to do next?
    Thank you.

However, I went to take a screenshot and something very weird happened. It popped up a dialog box where the scanner was checked as shown in your screenshot with an 80.????? IP address (the ? are because I don't recall)
The 80 number would have been the MX870 wifi network address - not the IP address. The scanner selector tool does not show the device IP address, only the network address.
...asking if "Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector 2" could accept incoming connections from the network and there was a 3rd choice listing the scanner as "Canon MX870 series_3DXXXXX (where I am putting in Xs because I suspect it is a serial number).
Based on this I would guess that the firewall is enabled on your Mac and the prompt is to add an exception to for the networked MX870 (and the X's are the last digits of the wifi network address shown in the selector tool) so that communication can flow between both devices.

  • Since purchasing my Mac Pro with retina display, I can no longer change the preferences on MP Navigator for Canon MX870. Help?

Since purchasing my Mac Pro with retina display, I can no longer change the preferences on MP Navigator for Canon MX870. I can change them on my old Mac Pro with Lion, but not the new one. I can scan but I can't save it to a folder on my hard drive. I can only let it default to a back up date folder. Tried all sorts of things to change the preferences and folders, nothing worked. Ideas?

To prevent your iPhone from automatically syncing when you plug it in, click on iTunes in the menu bar, then preferences, then "devices", then tick "prevent iPhones, iPad's and iPod's from syncing automatically".
Plug it in, then on the iPhone sync summary screen, click "info" along the top.
Make sure the "sync contacts" option is not ticked. as long as it's not ticked, then it won't sync with your mac's contacts but will still include them in backups.
Also, if you use iCloud, make sure that the iPhone/mac are either not signed into the same account, or that "contacts" is not turned on for both of them

  • Can't install the software for the Canon MX870 series because it is not currently available from the Software Update server.

I'm trying to setup my Canon MX870 USB ink jet printer plugged into my Airport Extreme's USB port.  However, I keep getting a message of; "Can't install the software for the Canon MX870 series because it is not currently available from the Software Update server."  And then I have to click cancel.
    The "Print & Scan" from System Preferences, can see the printer as it has the NAME: Canon MX870 series,  and the LOCATION: 'the name of my network',  and USE: MX870 series.  But after clicking "Add", it tries to install the software (I've already installed the latest drivers however on my Mac Pro) and that's when I get this message;
"Can't install the software for the Canon MX870 series because it is not currently available from the Software Update server."
Any ideas, help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello Marty,
It sounds like you are not able to add your Canon printer in System Preferences.  I found an article with steps you can take to resolve this:
    Resolution
USB printers and Bonjour-enabled network printers
Follow these steps until the issue is addressed:
Make sure that the printer is powered on, has ink / toner, and that there are no alerts on the printer’s control panel. Note: If you cannot clear an alert on the printer's control panel, stop here and check the printer's documentation or contact the manufacturer for support.
Ensure the printer is properly connected to a USB port on the Mac or AirPort base station / Time Capsule. If the printer is a network-capable printer, make sure that it is properly connected to your home network.
Use Software Update to find and install the latest available updates. If an update is installed, see if the issue persists.
Open the Print & Scan pane or Print & Fax (Snow Leopard) pane in System Preferences.
Delete the affected printer, then add the printer again.
If the issue persists, try these additional steps:
Reset the printing system, then add the printer again.
If the issue still persists, reset the printing system again.  Download and install your printer's drivers. Then, add the printer again.
Contact the printer vendor or visit their website for further assistance.

  • How do I scan and email documents on my canon mx870? I have a MAC OS X 10.7.5 and it is connected with a usb cable to the printer. Thank you so much!

How do I scan and email documents on my canon mx870? I have a MAC OS X 10.7.5 and it is connected with a usb cable to the printer. Thank you so much!

Hi, I have 10.6.8 and an HP printer so it may be slightly different but I'll give it my best shot:
    Go to System Preferences.
    Click on "Print & Fax"
Near the top of that page you should see "Print" and "Scan" options. Click "Scan"
A button appears that says "open scanner"
The settings are different between the different scanner models so I'm not sure what the next window will look like, but it should be pretty straightforward from there. It will scan to a JPEG image which you can attach to an email. I hope that helps! Let me know if there's anything ense I can help with.

  • After upgrading to Snow Leopard, Canon MX870 doesn't print text...just images

After upgrading to Snow Leopard (yes I know I'm slow to upgrade) my Canon MX870 isn't printing text. It is printing images but the quality if horrendous because it's not printing the black ink.
Here's what I've done so far
Installed the latest drivers for Snow Leopard from Canon
Cleaned the heads of the printer
Added new ink to all cartridges
Run printing tests (nozzle print patterns)...all good
Reset my printers in the Print Fax Preferences and added in the printer again
    Numerous restarts
Now I'm at a loss for what else to do. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
BTW, printer is connected via USB not wireless.

OK well I can see now that all of my files are present on the hard drive (mybook) only they are not showing up in aperture. It seems that there has been some sort of communication breakdown between the two.
As I said several files are missing and or corrupt in my aperture library. I'm wondering if there is a way to rebuild the library without using the vault technique? Does this make sense to anyone?
I was able to go into finder - mybook - aperture library - show contents and see that all my raw files at least are there. Now I just need to get aperture to recognize them.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

  • Canon MX870 network printer works sometimes

OK so I am in need of some help with printing over a wifi network.
I am using a Canon MX870 as a network printer with a Macbook Pro, and iMac that are connected to it via wifi. I also had it connected via ethernet and I still had the same issues. The printer does print but not consistently. It will randomly say that there is a communication error in the canon print status. I had the same issues with another HP officejet.
I am running the verizon wireless router and Mac OSX 10.6. Any help would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks!

Given the current situation with the MX870 and the previous issue with the HP then I suggest you try changing the channel used by the Verizon router. Sometimes this can be done automatically by the router - simply restarting the device can be enough for it to obtain another channel. The other way would be to connect to the internal web page of the Verizon, by typing its IP address as the URL in Safari, and then manually changing the channel currently being used.
As to what channel to use, I suggest you get an application that can scan your immediate area to show what other wireless access points are close and could be conflicting with yours. There is a nice widget called Airlock that will show all wireless access points the Mac can 'see' and show what channels they are using. With this knowledge you can then select a channel that is not being used, or at least reply with what the utility finds and report this back.
The other thing you can check is the measured signal strength of the MX870. This can be found on the internal web page of the printer, which you access by typing its IP address into your browser. If you don't know the IP address you can use Safari to find the device, by opening the Bookmarks link in the toolbar and then selecting Bonjour in the left pane of Safari. The MX870 should be listed in the right pane. Selecting it will show the MX870 home page and here will be the quality and strength of the wireless signal. If these values are low then this will explain why you have been losing connection with the device.

  • Canon MX870 B200 error, how to use scan only?

I have Canon MX870 which I only use it for scan. When I'm turning the printer on at the booting process it give me B200 error and STOP to work completely.I have to open and close cartridge door couple times at the startup to can skip the B200 error and be able to use the scanner.I know the problem is related to cartridge or printhead or something about printing. I only use this machine for scanning and i don't need to print at all. How I can disable or disconnect the printing component on this machine to be able to use just the scanner?
or at least disable the printer diagnostic at the start up?

Hi g6381646, We do not have instructions for disabling the printer diagnostic at startup or disconnecting the printing component of the printer; the printer will require servicing to resolve the error.  Please call or email us using one of the methods on the Contact Us page to obtain your servicing options.

  • Can't add Canon MX870 using LPD on OS X 10.6.5

We've just got a new Canon MX870 printer in our office, and I'm trying to add it on my mac (running 10.6.5).
I've chosen LPD as the protocol, entered the printers IP address, and selected Canon MX870 series from the "Print Using" list. When I push the Add button, a windows drops down very briefly (less than a second) titled "Determining Installable Options". When it disapears, I'm left back at the Add Printer window, without the printer having been installed.
I've tried downloading and installing the latest drivers from the Canon website, but that did not help.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Here's what I did to get it fully working. Install the software that came with the printer, when it can't find the printer on the network just cancel. Now that the software is all installed, let's get the printer added to the Mac.
Okay, so what you want to do is go into Device Settings>LAN Settings>Other Settings>Bonjour settings>Enable/disable Bonour> Click Enable
At this point you can also go into Service name and change the name of the printer.
    Then reboot the printer.
Go into System Preferences>Print & Fax on your Mac, unlock it if it's locked, and click on the + to add a printer. Now you should be in Add Printer. Click on Default if your not already there, give it a few seconds to locate the printer and the scanner. Select the printer and click Add. Now, if you want the scanner added as well, go back in and click on the +, select the scanner and click Add.
Now, unless there's some other network issue your printer should be fully functional.

  • Connect to Canon Mx870 scanner after OS 10.9.4 update

    Hi, world of Mac geniuses:
after the 10.9.4 update, none of the Macs in my house (a 2010 iMac, a 2012 MacBook Pro, a 2014 MacBook Air) will recognize the scanner function on our networked Canon MX870 integrated scanner / printer. They all recognize it as a printer, but not as a scanner. It is connected wirelessly to our AirPort base station. As I said, all the computers in the house do recognize it as a printer, and can print to it, so I don't think there's anything wrong with the network connection per se.
I've tried all the obvious fixes -- restarting all the devices, removing the printer and then reinstalling it in System Preferences on each machine, removing the printer from the network and then connecting it to the network again.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any ideas?
    --JT

Just to confirm, when you want to connect to a networked scanner using Image Capture, the device will appear under the heading of Shared rather than Devices. So the MX870 is not listed under the heading of Shared?
If it is not listed under Shared, then a suggested action would be to connect the MX870 to one Mac via USB cable - purely as a test. If you then open Image Capture on this Mac the MX should now be shown under Devices. Select it and see that you can scan. This will confirm that the ICA driver is installed and working correctly. If this does work, disconnect the USB cable from the Mac and try scanning via the network again.

  • Can i use my new I pad with the Canon MX870 printer?

    Can I use a I PAD 2 with me Canon MX870 Printer?

The Canon MX870 is not on Apple's AirPrint list of supported printers:
    AirPrint basics
So you would have to find some Canon app or some third party app in the App Store to do some limited printing from iPad.
