Canon mxf import

Repeated emails to Canon have not produced anything in the way of a plug-in to allow FCPX to natively edit .mxf wrapped footage from the XF100, XF105, XF300 and XF305 cameras. Instead, what I use (currently) which is time consuming but it works is a product from an Asian company called AUNSOFT: TransMXF. The interface is pretty simple. Click on the filmstrip, upper left corner, and you can command-click as many .mxf files within your copied folder from the camera as you wish. Unfortunately, one of the laborious parts of this process is that you have to open each folder individually, click on the .mxf file, and then, while holding down the command key, go to the next folder, etcetera, until you have a pile of them loaded into the app.
Then you need to tell it which format to convert to. I use ProRes 422, sometimes opting for ProRes 422 (LT) if the footage doesn't need to be top resolution. Select the destination and...
...push that big button at the lower right of the window. Then walk away, because its going to take processing power and time, and you really don't want to be doing much else unless you have a nice quad-core processor.
I'm still waiting for Canon and Apple to catch up to Adobe Premiere CS5.5, which natively imports and edits .mxf footage with only minimal re-processing time (and you work with the footage while it's doing some background processing). As is so often the case, there are pluses and minuses to all applications--with Aunsoft, its mainly that it won't automatically recognize .mxf files and you have to click on each one manually.

Well, it gets a little complicated, because this app only wants to read the files with the .mxf suffix. I haven't triedI was wrong in one thing I wrote above: to do a command click on several .mxf files, one needs to do that first, then DRAG the selected mxf files onto the converter's main window, where they will load. But you know, that's a good tip. Rather than opening each of the subfolders (everything in the "CLIPS001" folder, for example) and command clicking, laboriously, each .mxf file, as I've been doing....
I can do as you suggest, and get this, which I can then just "select all" and drag:
Thanks for the tip.

    Any idea?

CS5.x is obsolete software and is no longer supported by Adobe ever since CS6 was released.  The last version of the Camera Raw plug-in to run with CS5.x was ACR 6.7.1. There will be no further updates for CS5.x.
You need to look for, download, install, launch and run the free, stand-alone Adobe DNG Converter 8.8 on each batch of raw files that cannot be opened in ACR 6.7.1.

  • Canon XF Import Causes Premiere CS6 to Crash.  Help!

I purchased a Canon XF300 to work specifically with Premiere CS6 as Adobe claims native support for MXF files.
Unfortunately, whenever I import footage from the XF300 into Premiere, it causes Premiere to crash.
This happens no matter what method I use to import the files... using XF Ultility, using Prelude, clicking on import in the Premiere CS6 media browser, opening the files in the media browser and dragging and dropping into a bin.  It doesn't matter.  The crash still happens.
This is not an issue with spanned clips as it happens even without spanned clips.
After importing the clips into a bin, the bin has trouble drawing thumbnails for all the clips, usually but not always the ones not initially visible in the bin window.  The thumbnails don't appear, just gray boxes.  Scrolling down and clicking on the gray boxes, even after waiting several minutes for the system to "catch up," causes a crash.
This is a repeatable problem that *only* happens when using Canon MXF footage.  Every other codec I've tried works just fine.  The Canon footage never works.
I am on a Mid-2012 Mac Pro 2x 3.06 GHz 6-Core Inten Xeon computer running 64GB of Ram on OSX 10.8.3, using Premiere 6.0.2 Creative Cloud.  I use a Matrox MX02 for I/O and a NVIDIA Quadro 4000 with CUDA Driver 5.0.59.
I've troubleshot this problem to death, stripping everything from the machine down to its original factory state (no extra RAM, no NVIDIA card, no Matrox I/O etc.) and the system still crashes every single time I try to import the MXF footage, no matter what method I use.  The only workaround is to transcode to ProRes and that's not acceptable.
Am I the only one having this issue?  Is there something glaringly obvious I'm overlooking?  Thanks in advance for any assistance or perspective.  I am growing increasingly frustrated as I feel Adobe has a software problem here they're not addressing.

That's the thing.  The system drive has plenty of space... 762Gb out of 1TB available.  All the HDs have a ton of space on them.  This has happened since Day 1 when the entire system was brand new.
And only with Canon XF files.  No other codec produces behavior even remotely similar on my system.  It's baffling because everyhting is up to spec as far as I can determine and yet the problem persists.
Limiting the number of clips in a bin is unworkable because of the type of work I'm doing.  Transcoding is the only answer at this point but I really would like to know what's causing this.
I really wish Adobe could try to recreate the problem.  Does anyone else out there using Mac OSX and CS6 have trouble with XF files?  Is it a known issue?

  • MXF import error in PPCS6

    Hi,
I am currently tearing my hair out over an import issue in CS6. I'm trying to import a client's footage from an XDCamHD disc into Premiere, which as I understand it should be supported natively. However, everytime I try it refuses to import the video stream (the various audio files seem to import ok) giving me a 'generic error.'
    A few points:
I am importing with the whole file structures available so all the various other associated files are there (PPI's, BIMs... or whatever else they're called...). A point to note here is that if I drag the whole folder into PP the usual message comes up about not supporting the file formats for all the rubbish files, but also includes the video stream mxf file.
I've tried doing it through the media browser, dragging straight in from Explorer and via File>Import.
As far as I can tell from the client it was recorded 1080p, 50Mbps which I can't see being a problem.
Our system has the Matrox MXO2 thingy attached, if that makes a difference.
Our main system is PC, but I've tried it on a Mac as well and got the same result...
    I think that's it.
We used to use this footage all the time and had no problems, the only difference being that it was on CS5. So the upgrade is the only thing I can see causing a problem... but I can't work out why.
Any help is GREATLY apprieciated (before this client tears out what little hair I have left...).
    Thanks!

    Hi,

  • Help me with MXF files in FCP (using Calibrated MXF import app)

I have 10 cards of footage full of .MXF files that need to be imported into FCP. I downloaded Calibrated MXF import (http://www.calibratedsoftware.com/MXFImport_Mac.asp) but not quite sure how to use it.
After I installed it, I'm able to import the .mxf files into my bin but there is no audio connected to the video files and vice versa. I have no idea what kind of camera the footage was shot on, but everything was imported through Avid and then given to me on a hard drive.
Here is what the file structure looks like in my finder:
    http://i.imgur.com/R2vbQ.png
Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

When the Calibrated plugin is installed, you should be able to treat those MXF files as if they were native quicktimes. Not knowing where these files originated is definitely a problem, and something that you will need to research.
Try opening a clip in Quicktime Player and use the Get Info window to get some details about these files. It should list there if there is audio, and what format it is.

  • Freezing with Native Canon MXF

We're having some problems with Premiere Pro (CS5.5 and 5.5.1) freezing for a few seconds (the screen goes gray, the program doesn't respond for a while, then it comes back) when scrubbing through native Canon MXF files.  It's doing it on TWO Windows 7 computers.
    Windows 7
    Intel i7 Sandy Bridge
    Asus Mobo
    16GB Ram
Production Premium CS5.5  (one has a 5.5.1 update)
It seems to play fine, but when we're looking through clips in the bins it's freezing way too often to be usable.
We've deleted all the cache files, deleted / reset preferences etc etc.
    Any ideas?

@ExactImage:  I think 20 seconds would be plenty - enough to evaluate the playback without being fooled by frame caching.
@Roberio: I don't speak for product management, but in my opinion, probably not.  Reason being, our 422 MXF support in CS 5.x was not directly implemented by us, it goes through Main Concept components.  Consequently, to get a fix, we'd need to take a new drop of the Main Concept SDK.  This impacts not just 422 MXF support, but all MPEG support in the product, so it's a more risky proposition, one that generally doesn't happen in a dot release.  Evaluating a new SDK drop is something that normally happens during a regular product cycle.
I can vouch that the audio looping bug is gone in CS6, as I was asked to test a file with this problem against my implementation.  Going forward, our 422 support will be easier to maintain, as we do all the file handling/container navigation, and only rely on using the Main Concept SDK for the actual essence decoding, so we'll have more control for fixing issues such as the looping audio bug.

  • Canon MXF Files On Timeline Have Changed, Updated This Morning...

I went to bed last night feeling good that I was going to deliver a solid project for my client this afternoon. Woke up this morning, updated to the latest Premiere Pro CC and now in my project all of the Canon MXF clips on every timeline are completely different than what I edited together. They are the same camera angles, just that the edited clips have been replaced by footage from earlier or later in the MXF file. I tried deleting all preview and media cache files and nothing has fixed it so far. Project is due in 4 hours and there is no way I can start all over. Any suggestions?

I'm going to keep plugging away here and hopefully I can figure something out.

  • Calibrated{Q} MXF Import not linking audio with video automatically

    Dear all,
I am trying Calibrated{Q} MXF Import demo for Mac to import my old MXF files used for Avid system before to FCP. As the files were set for Avid, so the P2 file structure no more exists, and I have to import the file directly from the Avid MediaFiles/MXF/(number) folder.
Yet, when I import a video MXF file into FCP, it doesn't automatically link the audio. I did put a tick mark next to Join Audio Files to Video in Calibrated{Q} MXF Options.
Did I make any mistake, or I just have to put all five video and audio files together on a sequence to sync up myself?
    Thank you very much.
    Best regards,
    King

the company told me that as the P2 file structure is gone, the audio files won't be automatically joined the video file. In other words, I have to sync them up by myself.
    Thanks.

  • Anyone Figure Out How To Edit Using Canon .mxf Files?

my Canon xf105 .mxf files won't import into Adobe Premier Pro 6.0.3...  Keep getting a "generic error".... and I've tried everything!
I've downloaded the Canon utilitiy, tried merging the clips, tried isolating the .mxf files, tried not touching the clip structure at all.....
    PLEASE HELP!!
I'm using a Mac OS 10.8.2 on Mountain Lion.

Put the CONTENTS folder in its own folder and name it e.g. Card 1.
Go to the Media Browser and click on Card 1.
Now your clips will show up and you can import them.
Or go to the Project Window and click on Card 1 and Import Folder.
    If you want single files.
Open XF Utility and Set Virtual Media (File) for Card 1.
Select all files and Export to MXF (Edit).
These single files can be imported into the Project Window.

  • How to ingest Canon MXF files into FCP 7

All afternoon I've been trying to figure out how to get Final Cut Pro 7 to recognize .mxf files generated by a Canon FS-CV hard drive, without much luck. This device has 3 options of format: .m2t, .mxf and Quicktime. I've found that the Quicktime files are not openable by Quicktime Pro 7.7 and gives me the bewildering error
"An invalid public movie atom was found in the movie."
Okay, so that's not working, let's try Plan B. Since I have a P2 camera, .mxf is a familiar sight so I tried that one. L&T doesn't recognize anything about it, so that's a no-go. The only reliable workflow I've found so far is to transcode the .m2t files to ProRes using Mpeg Streamclip. Okay, that works, but is that the only one of these that'll work with FCP? Quicktime format seemed like a no-brainer. Why won't it open and/or play? I've Googled and Googled and have found plenty of people asking this question but no useful answers so far. And why doesn't FCP Log & Transfer recognize these .mxf files? If Canon has a special plugin for this, I haven't been able to find it through the byzantine maze they call a web site.
    Any suggestions are welcomed.

You're searching for the wrong device. It's a recorder made by Focus Enhancements, not Canon. Try

The thing records HDV so see what happens when you try to use those conventional HDV presets.
    Native MXF HDV Support
With the FS-CV, you can record native MXF HDV 720p 30 and 1080i 50/60 clips and import them into Avid Xpress Pro, Avid Media Composer, or Avid NewsCutter for editing.
    Native QuickTime HDV Support
With the FS-CV, you can record 1080i 50/60/25f/24f/30f or 720p 30 clips as native QuickTime HDV. The FS-CV extracts and decodes the audio from the incoming HDV stream, combines it with the video stream, and wraps it as a QuickTime HDV file. When recording is complete, your QuickTime HDV file can be imported directly into Final Cut Pro—no capture or conversion is required.

  • MXF import "no audio or video streams"

I'm trying to import video shot on a C300 into Premier and I keep getting a dialog saying there are no audio or video streams.
I know the media and clips are there because I can see them fine using Canon XF utility, but Premier does not want to recognize them. Last time I worked with C300 media, it dropped right in from the Media Browser.
I can get an MXF converter and transcode them, but Premier should be able to directly import these files, shouldn't it? At least it has for me in the past.
Has anyone had a similar experience and solution?
    Thanks!
    dm

I found the problem and solution. We transferred the media using Shotput Pro. This creates an elaborate and apparently superfluous file structure like this...
And for some reason PP cannot see down inside this file structure in media browser or direct import. When I pulled the individual clip folders out of this file structure like this...
PP was able to see and import the MXF files fine.

  • C300 MXF Import : From Files on a Harddrive

    Hi,
I have shot about 15 CF cards worth of footage with the Canon C300. That was before I had bought FCPX and was editing the footage with Adobe Premiere Pro 6 which can automatically recognize the MXF without transcoding or re-wrapping.
Now that I have FCPX 10.0.6 I want to import the footage... but it won't recognize the files even though they are an exact copy of what was on the CF cards.
I bought FCPX because it said  the latest update (10.0.6) was compatible with files MXF natively?
Regardless.. I'm looking for a simple solution to import the files.. The only work-around I have figured out is to copy the files back to a CF card and then FCPX will allow me to import.
But why is it dependent on me having the footage on a CF card instead of a harddrive even though the file structure is exactly the same??
Seems unnecessarily specific.. Any thoughts? I don't feel like spending hours writing back media to cards and re-importing.
    Thanks

I'll give that a try.. I've never created a DMG file using Disk Utility. How long would that take for 64GB's of footage?
I guess it's a little discouraging that FCPX makes you jump through bizzare hoops to import footage that is considered native. I know the editing structure is based on Quicktime but why won't it allow me to wrap footage that is already downloaded to a drive? Seems pretty straight forward..
Can anyone explain the thinking on a limitation like that?
So the DMG work-around essentially duplicates the footage which the needs to be wrapped.. So 64GB's of footage becomes 128GB's with the new DMG file.. then I need to wrap that for a total of 192GB's. I might need to buy an new HD to complete the import of 960GB's of material with this method.

  • C300 MXF import fails across CS6

I am having trouble with footage shot with the Canon C300.
In Premiere, Prelude, & Media Encoder Ingest/Import fails with 'generic error' or 'unable to read xmp'
I can play the footage in Resolve 9, & in VLC.
I have tried transcoding it using Pavtube MXF Converter.
When transcoded to MPEG2 the ingest/import still fails.
When transcoded to WMV it can then be ingested/imported.
    Has anyone else experienced this?
    Anyone have a solution?
    Thank you community :-)

Have you tried a re-install of CS6? Having to transcode files that should play natively is a heck of a problem. I would wipe the system drive and start agian. Contacting Adobe support is also on tap.
This should work; from CS6 white papers:
"Adobe Systems and Canon have collaborated to bring highly e&cient, #le- and tape-based work!ows
to Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 so"ware, giving users the ability to natively edit HD and SD footage shot

and Canon XF105/100, which record video on solid-state media using the powerful Canon XF

I shot a film usinng the Canon C300 recording 50 Mbps MXF MPEG 2 files. When I import them into Adobe Premiere CC all playback shows a white screen (not rendering).
