Canon PIXMA MP980 networked Error Number : 311 Printer is in use

I have a mixed network at home with PC and Mac. It is wired and wireless. I have installed the Canon MP980 as USB to the iMac to set it up then went thru the wired network setup. I was able to print with USB attached. I am unable to print to it as a wired printer. I get Error Number : 311 Printer is in use or an error has occurred.
I am able to connect from the iMac via safari to its internal software over the wired network. Also, believe it or not I am able to print to it and scan from it, to an HP vista machine (the machine and OS that made me a Mac convert last year) It worked without a hitch.
It doesn't matter how the printer is set up in print settings, I still get this error. I am unable to find any gutenprint support for this model number.
Any ideas?

I am a bit concerned about the URI. I didn't think the machine supported HP Jetdirect-Socket, even when using the 'CUPS' driver. You could confirm this on this Vista box, by opening the printer queue and selecting Configure Port. If it shows the queue as Port 9100 then that would indicate that the printer does support HP Jetdirect-Socket, which is it's name on OS X. From memory, on Windows you select something like BJ Network Printer.
Anyway, you may want to try installing the non-CUPS driver and then selecting More Printers > Canon IJ Network. The printer should display with it's MAC address, which you should leave at this stage, and when you select it the driver should be automatically found.
I also believe you could use the same method with only the CUPS driver installed, however I would need to confirm this on my MP970 at work tomorrow.

  • CANON PIXMA MP640 - Communication error after a print or two

I've been very happy with this wireless machine until the last couple of weeks, when I've begun getting "a communication error has occurred" in the print window.
I re-run the Canon setup CD, download the latest driver for Snow Leopard (10.26.2.0) and all is well - for one or two operations. Then the communication error returns....
I can't think of any particular new application or programme I've installed to provoke the issue.
It's become exasperating and I've resorted to using the USB connection, which defeats the purpose.
    Any suggestions most welcome!

I had one "USB printer" set up, it worked like a charm.
I tried various "LAN printers", scanning worked fine, I could manage the printer, I could even print test pages (to check if the print nozzles where fine) from the management tool. But I could not print to the printer via LAN using the Print menu command.
I tried installing new driver software, it did not help. I tried reconfiguring the printer via the web interface. It did not help. I then tried deleting the "printers" I had created, except for the USB printer. I did the following:
    1. Opened System Preferences, Print & Fax
    2. Deleted all printers except the USB printer
    3. Clicked the + to add a new printer
    4. Selected the Default tab, and could then see the printer there.
    5. I added that printer, and could then see the printer with the canonijnetwork added to it.
    6. I added that, and now I can print using that "printer"!
Thanks a lot for the help. Please notice that, at least for me, it was essential to go to the Default tab and ad the printer from there, and that it was a two-step process (add the printer without canonijnetwork, then add it with canonijnetwork).
I wonder if anyone gets their MP640 printer to work via LAN or wireless without any problem (on OS X 10.6).
Anyhow, I can now also print successfully using LAN (the printer is connected to the router via LAN, my MacBook Pro is connected to the router wirelessly).

  • Problems with JPEG colors with MP Navigator EX 2.0 and Canon Pixma MP980

    Hi,
I'm scanning my huge old slide connection with a Canon Pixma MP980. I use MP Navigator EX 2.0 with wireless connection to the MP and use the "Open Scanner Driver" option to be able to fine-tune picture quality. I've experimented with different settings, and have scanned a lot of slides with the color profile option where colors are automatically matched to my (tuned) screen profile. But sometimes I end up with far too saturated JPEGs, and I can't understand what I'm doing wrong. The strange thing is that the images look good in the preview, and they also look good if I save them as TIFFs. I really want to avoid the TIFFs, though, they don't give me any more dynamic range than the JPEGs and are 10x the size.
Does anyone have an idea what setting I might have gotten wrong in the setup? Or if this could be a incompatibility with recent Quicktime updates, since it used to work fine for a while?

Not much response here, but I finally found the solution myself: By setting the Color Preferences to "Color Matching, the source to my scanner, and - this is the important part - the target to the standard sRGB color profile, I get pretty good results.

My Canon Pixma MG 7100 makes 2-sided printing the default. How can I change that to 1-sided for defa

    Hi janekieschninck,
If the printer is currently set to perform duplex (2-sided) printing, you can turn off the setting by deselecting the option in the printer driver. Please follow the instructions at the link below associated with your operating system to find where the duplex feature is located for your operating system:
    Duplex printing - Mac
    Duplex printing - Windows
    Hope this helps!

No. You can not. The only thing you can do is update to the durrent version. iOS 6. Shut off your antivirus and firewall software during the update process. It can interfere. If you are using Kaspersky, you may need to remove it entirely.

  • Canon PIXMA MX850 networking w/o a router

I have a MacBook Pro connected via ethernet directly to a cable modem, and a PowerBook G4 connected via shared airport wireless.
My intention is to I have a Canon PIXMA MX850 connected via ethernet to the PowerBook G4, and be able to print from both laptops.
I am unable to get either laptops to recognize the printer when connected via ethernet... the printer appears to get an valid IP address (192.168.1.123), but it is not useful, for both laptops choose 192.168.2.1... any ideas?
I currently have no router, or USB cable. I realize either of these items would solve my problems, and more, but I want to know if it is possible to directly connect the printer and laptop via ethernet and have stuff work.

What you want to do with Ethernet is possible. The key is ensuring you have the correct IP address subnets in all devices.
If your PowerBook has an IP address of 192.168.2.1, then its subnet is determined by the subnet mask. If you currently have a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, then this would mean your Mac has a subnet of 192.168.2 and a network address of 1.
If the printer has 192.168.1.123 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, then it has a subnet of 192.168.1, which means it is a different network to the Mac's and would therefore require a router to connect the two networks (subnets).
So, without getting a router, all you need to do is change the IP address of the printer to the same subnet as the Mac's, ie 192.168.2. This would then allow the Canon driver software to 'see' the printer. Note that to add this network printer, you have to select More Printers > Canon IJ Network. This should show the MX850 with its MAC address displayed in brackets. Select this and the print using menu to automatically change to Canon IJ Printer. Click Add to finish and now try a print.

  • My new Canon Pixma MG7520 isn't listed in printer preferences.

Just purchased a Canon Pixma MG7520 wireless Print-Copy-Scan  After spending all morning on the phone with Canon support, numerous tries and reboots of printer, router, airport and iMac, the Canon printer still does not show up when I try to add a printer in print prefs.  The router and printer are talking to each other, and the printer recognizes our airport network. I've already lost 3/4 of a day trying to figure out what to do next.  Anyone else have this issue?

Plug the printer directly into the computer to make sure it is working. (Should have USB to allow direct connection).
If it works go through the setup again via wireless to the airport. What IP does it get?
Please ping the printer IP from the computer.. it will often fail if the name used in the airport is typical apple name.
Please use all SMB names.. that means.. Short.. <8 characters please.. no spaces and pure alphanumerics.
Passwords can be the same rules but >8 characters.
If you still have trouble test briefly with no password at all.. if you still have issues the Canon printer might be having wireless issues.

  • Network error when ordering prints

I have been trying to order prints of over 1,000 of my photos and they appear to upload just fine and I am able to put in 1 4x6 on all photos. Then, it goes to a grey connecting line, which eventually turns blue. After awhile I get the network error message. I've tried several times over the last week to order the pictures and the same thing happens each time. Is there a limit to how many you can order at once? Do I need to split my order into two separate orders?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You very well may be getting timed out on the upload/order process. I'd try splitting the order in two and see if that will go thru unimpeded.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Canon Pixma ip5200r network

I have just upgraded to snow lepard and descided to print, i was shocked to find that my printer had gone from the list, try i a may i cannot get it working again, when i go to add printers there is no cannon network showing any more and when i use the ip address and driver that doesnt work either, i was wanting to go back to the old os but there doesnt seem any wahy to do this, so i need hep to get this printer working again, i have tried drivers from us and australia as well as the uk ones, but the network tool also says it cant find the printer, i knwo its working cause it prints from my old macbook no probs,
    help help help pleaseeee

Hello and welcome to Apple Discussions.
The Canon IJ Network Tool, used on 10.4 and 10.5, does not work that well on 10.6. In fact, if you do a clean install of 10.6 rather than an upgrade from 10.5, and you then install the Canon IJ Network Tool, you will not see 'Canon IJ Network' via the More Printers button (to be more correct you don't even get the More Printers button unless some other driver has made it available).
So, you have to rely on the built-in network protocol, called canonijnetwork, within the new v10.26 driver to make the printer appear on your wireless or wired network. Assuming you have the v10.26 driver already installed, if you select to add the printer and have the Add Printer window set to the Default view, the iP5200R should appear after a short time in this view, with the Kind column showing 'canonijnetwork'. Note that it can take up to 20 seconds for the printer to display. Once it is visible, you can click on the entry and the Print Using menu will automatically change to 'Canon iP5200R series'.
If the iP5200R does not appear in the Add Printer > Default view, then ensure you do not have the Mac's internal firewall enabled. This is located under System Preferences > Security > Firewall.
Hope this helps and please reply if needed.

  • Can the Canon Pixma ix 6520 support manual duplex printing?

I know that this printer doesn't support duplex printing but I was wondering how would I double side print manually with the canon pixma ix6520?
    Thanks!

    Hello thekay94.
Manual duplex printing can be done by printing on one side at a time.
If you are printing from a Windows computer, please select the Duplex printing option in the Page Setup tab of the Printing Preferences menu.  If you are printing from a Mac, please use the options in the Layout menu to print the odd pages first, then load the stack back in the printer with the blank side facing you to print on the even numbered pages.
If immediate assistance is needed, feel free to call us at 1-800-OKCANON.

  • New Canon Pixma MP450 Networked????

Ok...I've got three Macs in the house: dual 1.25 MDD upstairs, iMac in my son's room, and a 12" Powerbook. I've got everything set up using a US Robotics MaxG Router/Print Server. Everything works great including sharing the Canon MP450 from the main MDD upstairs system in the office.
Well, I started reading about the print server part of the router and decided that it would be a better idea to have it hooked up that way instead of having the upstairs MDD heater always on when we need to print. I set the printer up straight to the USB of the router/print server. The problem is that when i go to set up the printers on each system, there isn't a PPD for this printer. It always wants to pick a generic....The system can see the printer but just doesn't do anything...I guess i'm asking, can I download the PPD for this Canon? I've already updated the router to the latest firmware and printer dirver...
    Thanks much,
    Robert

The limitation to standard networking is the Canon driver. It was written to support USB only.
I think www.printfab.net is your best hope for a network-capable (CUPS) driver, but your model isn't yet listed there.

  • Connecting Canon Pixma MP980 to Macbook with OSX 10.4.11 wireless

Hiya, just wondering if someone can help. I've gone through all the steps to set up the wireless connection. I'm stuck on the last set of steps where you add your printer through the Printer Utility.
In the instructions it says that if you click "More Printers" it should show up in the list under "Canon IJ Network" but mine doesn't. Nothing shows up in the list. I've downloaded the latest driver from the Canon site, but that did nothing. The printer said its IP address was 10.1.1.4, so I tried to ping that, but it doesn't complete.
Has anyone had any success with connecting them? Thanks.

I can print/scan via USB fine, but when I turned the printer on this morning, the IP address and subnet mask in the LAN Settings List on the printer itself were blank (Settings > Device Settings > LAN Settings > Wireless LAN Settings List). In that settings list, it also says the connection is inactive. This is weird because those settings were fine last night after I ran the Network Utility again. It's like it just forgot the settings.
I don't use those settings to print via USB, but I'm trying to figure out why when it's not connected via USB I can't add the printer to my "Print and Fax settings" under System Preferences, and therefore can't print wirelessly.
Hope that explains it a bit more!
My next step is to take it to a Canon service centre to see if there's a hardware problem, or just live with it. Makes me not want to buy Canon ever again though!

  • Canon Pixma MP470 all in one scanner printer "scan fail"

I found earlier posts that described similar problems as mine, they were marked as answered. I continue to have problems even tho I have followed earlier instructions from other members i.e. PAHU.
I am trying to use a Canon MP470 printer connected by USB cable to my iMac. I don't use it much and it has worked unreliably in the past. Today all scans fail except one which to me would mean that I have installed the correct driver for OSX 10.6. I am not sure if I have deleted the old preset and created a new preset for the new driver correctly. I hate to say it but I am a little unsure how to go about this. I don't remember having as much trouble before I upgraded to OS 10.6.3.
If anyone has some suggestions or instructions, I sure would appreciate them.

Okay, the Presets in this post did refer to the Printer preset. The poster had a black and white preset they had created with a previous OS and was trying to use it on Snow Leopard, which did not work because the printer driver was different on the new OS. This does not apply to the scanner portion of your MP470.
As for checking the scanner driver version, this is not an easy task. But the new driver installation typically overwrites the previous version. If you are not sure which driver install you did last, I suggest you run this v13.9 installer again. to ensure it is what you are using.
I would also suggest you have MP Navigator v2.04 or later installed, as earlier versions may not be that compatible with Snow Leopard. Again, running the newest version of MP Navigator installer should overwrite an older version.
If you have the latest MP Navigator and it is still not scanning correctly then please reply. At least you now know about Image Capture so if you did find that MP Nav stopped working, you are not totally stumped
