Canon Powershot S50 and iPhoto issues
After doing some major searching of the discussion pages I am posting in order to get some help with my Canon S50 and iPhoto 5.0.4 (263).
When importing into iPhoto or from Canon's image viewer or from the card reader built into my printer (HP photosmart 7760) I have problems.
When using iPhoto to import I get an error message telling me that iPhoto can't read the files because they are either corrupt or in a format it can't read
Using the card reader or image viewer, I can get the files onto the computer, and can view previews of the files, which look fine. However when I try to open them in preview or any other software the photos are distorted and color "bars" cover the photos.
I try importing the same files using a 12 powerbook and it worked fine.
Please help me!

Can't import RAW files from Canon Powershot S50.
iPhoto6 will not import RAW files from my Canon Powershot S50. It says the files are "unreadable". Image capture will import to the desktop, but neither iPhoto nor Photoshop Elements can open the file. I checked and the S50 is supposed to be compatible with OSX and RAW files.

Macbook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.7)I agree but I was responding to someone with an S50. That's hardly an "advanced amateur" camera. iPhoto has some rather neat catalog features but the editing is purely for the snapshooter. Heck, I suspect that redeye removal is the most popular feature and, as far as I'm concerned, if you have redeye to begin with, you're a snapshooter.
I'm an extremely advanced amateur with my film setup but, because of cost, I'm still a snapshooter with my digital camera. My film setup is two Nikon N80s with a top-of-the-line Nikon flash head that I use only with a Stroboframe bracket. The bracket and the necessary extension cord cost me nearly $200! My lenses are pure Nikon, including a single focal length f/1.8, 85 mm. portrait lens.
I consider 10 MP to be the bare minimum for "advanced amateur" shooting and both Canon and Nikon have recently introduced 10MP SLRs in the $1000 range. However, I'm waiting for the next advance - an SLR without the reflex mechanism - interchangeable lenses and an FP shutter but no mirror! Let's face it, the reflex mechanism adds cost but a digital screen gives the same view and even better (you can see the color balance) and screens are now available that can be viewed in bright sunlight.
I'm also hoping for one thing that will probably never happen - physically larger CCDs so that I can get the same focus control (small depth of field) that I can get with my film camera. -
Powershot S50 and Raw.plist
I have had very good results with the Canon Powershot S50 by finding the Canon Powershot S60 entry, and changing the 6 in S60 to a 5. Both cameras have the same sensor. If you have both the S60 and the S50 you will have to something more elaborate.
The S50 is my "carry around" camera, so I now have a bunch of images I can work with in Aperture that I had to use Camera Raw for before.
dual g5 2ghz Mac OS X (10.4.6)I hate to admit it, but I am working on a PC laptop right now. You can find many discussions in these forums about the location and modifications of the Raw.plist file, which contains the Powershot S60 entry.
Be sure to make a copy of the original before modifying it!

Canon FS100 import and quality issues
I have a imac (lastest model) and imovie 11. I have a canon camcorder. Flash memory one. I movie cannot read the mod files form camcorder or if I make them mpg's they still cannot be read.
If I try to import them via usb into imovie there is alot of image degradation. If I do this on a windows computer, the image quality is perfect.
What can I do to fix this problem on a mac?

Cannot import RAW from Canon Powershot S50
Hello,
I am trying to import RAW files from a Canon S50 and I get a message stating that the files are unreadable. I can open them in Photoshop if I move them from the microdrive to the system.
Any ideas.
ErikHello Erik
is iphoto telling you that the file is unreadable? what version of iphoto are you using? i use to have a Canon S50 and had a "unreadable" file message. i used image capture to download the file though it was a jpeg error message.
i used the packaged software to download and uncompress the RAW files instead of using iphoto(had ver. 4 at the time). -
Canon Powershot S50 hack to be supported by Aperture 2.
Hello S50 users (and possibly others).
I do have a Minolta SLR, and a old PowerShot S50 which happens to have a RAW mode, unlike new compacts by Canon. I also bought a waterproof case for it, so it's my only one which i want to risk it underwater. As many of you know, the S50 is essentially an S60 (supported, by the way) with a different zoom.
I downloaded the Aperture 2 trial today, and immediately seen that Aperture 2 doesn't rely anymore on RAW.plist, as the old trick of duplicating the S60 section and naming it S50 doesn't work.
So I got an hex editor, replaced the "Powershot S50" with "Powershot S60" in the raw file and wow! here it goes. Well, I've some hundreds of them and... well, here's the final solution which will solve this problem once and for ever. This script will look in the current directory for .CRW files and replace " S50" with " S60" letting Aperture 2 manage those files. Hope it will be useful for anyone puzzled by this questionable "feature". P.S. Both "S" have a space in front, just in case...
Bye
Paolo
#!/bin/bash
for file in *.CRW
do
perl -pi -e 's/ S50/ S60/g' $file;
echo $file" done."
done
exit 0Or convert the RAW to DNG. AP2 will be able to view the S50 this way.

Canon Powershot A560 and Remote Shooting
I am unable to use remote shooting with my canon powershot. I installed all of the software, but when I click the tab for remote shooting, the actual button to start is 'grayed out'. Is this a software problem, or is it related to Intel or a faulty camera?
I feel like an idiot. lol.
The Canon A560 does not support remote shooting. It's a shame. -
Mail and iPhoto issues in 8.2
Question is how to fix iPhoto and Mail in 8.2?
Just a little history to start. Reinstalled 8.2 after I had Java issues. Having 2T drive worth of Time Machine means nothing. Erred 3 times ~40min into a 4hr backup from several different selections of Time Machine dates. Gave up and picked and selected backup pieces. Music, iPhotos( 57K), Contacts. Before I could backup the Mail using Time Machine files, it erred with a "ran out of space" error. Seems I left the Time Machine backup "on" selected and it was backing up after I reloaded 8.2, pictures, music, etc. I understand now a "feature" of Time Machine is to clear the oldest backups (Aug 11) for incremental backups unless you have an immense backup (new software) and then it deletes all of the history when it its a space limit. I ran out time to get the mail.
That was the history for the last two days. Yesterday everything worked. Downloaded photos of grandson, sent email, and used Java with the weatherstation. All was well with the world....Today Mail can't find Mail in ~/library/mail starting up. Won't error to send to apple, but makes me quit as below. I have verified Mail is where it belongs as below:
At the same time Mail had problems, so did iPhoto. iPhoto starts to open and crashes. (think I sent 60 crash reports to Apple). Sometimes it opens and I see the event folders then crashes. Most times it crashes as the iPhoto start window begins. Very inconsistant at where it crashes. See the last section for one crash report. Can someone assist? I really don't want to reload 8.2 again (last resort). 8.0 version ran very well and I liked it better than Snow Leopard and Lion.

Thank you for contacting National Instruments. I am sorry you were experiencing those issues with your application builder. Although you are using LabVIEW 8.2 (upgraded from 8.0.1), you should not be getting those errors, especially since you were able to successfully build applications in 8.0.1. It would be very helpful if you could drill down which vi (LabVIEW vi) is causing you to change these options. With this information, I can dig a little bit deeper to see if there has been a change in the function from 8.0.1 to 8.2. Please let me know what you find.
Best Regards,

LR5, Canon 6D, Mac and WB issue!
So I just upgraded to LR5 and I'm finding that my white balance is different in LR5 vs LR4. I had the same problem when I updated to the latest version of 4 (so I had to reinstall 4.3 and all was well) I figured it was a fluke and didn't think I'd have the same issue with LR5...Anyway if I try to correct skin tones in LR I like to be able to check what my eyes are seeing (on my calibrated screen) by using the RGB numbers. Typically I find that if I choose a midtone with 85% luminocity and adjust from there letting my numbers fall in a 20 point spread (r=85, g=73-75, b=65-68) I can get a pretty good rendition of my children's skin tones. This method works GREAT in LR 4.3 but in LR5 NOT AT ALL. LR5 wants me to add way too much yellow (warmth) and magenta (if anything with Canon, sometimes the images have too much magenta in them to start!) I like to be able to do some quick edits, but if I have to second guess my eyes and don't have solid numbers to check by I'll be adjusting each image to death and second guessing my eyes! I can use LR 4.3 YES, but I just PAID for 5 and would love for it to work right! I was just curious if anyone else has noticed a difference in how LR5 was interpreting WB/colorspace or if it's just me! I am callibrated and even tried recallibrating (didn't change a thing). Also, it seems strange that v 4.3 is fine as is CS6 but 4.4 and 5 are reading my images really wrong....Thanks is advance!
Here is my image in LR4 with only WB corrected (sample taken from back of left arm)
Screen Shot 2013-07-05 at 8.38.45 AM by nllattanzi, on Flickr
And HERE is the image in LR5 with the same WB settings from LR4 (same exact sample point)
LR5 sample taken from back of left arm using same WB correction as LR4 by nllattanzi, on Flickr
As you can see, even the luminosity of the skin is different in LR5...strange right?
So I found a point of 85% red on the image in LR5 (this was the back of the right arm)
LR5 midtone found with LR4 corrected WB numbers by nllattanzi, on Flickr
As you can see LR is telling me that I need to add magenta and warm it up....
Here is the same image pulled into CS 6 to check the WB (point sample from back of left arm)
PS sample of LR4 edit by nllattanzi, on Flickr
So I was curious as to what LR5 wanted my WB to be so I attempted to correct it by the numbers:

YUCK right?!?!? Look how much magenta I had to add (I can't even get the image to say it has 74-73% green unless my image looks magenta-like the skin is actually pink LOL) and it's way too warm
So of course I pulled it into PS and you can see that it's too warm (although surprisingly on this one the magenta checks out...although if I cooled it down it would probably show too much magenta then)

This is really annoying and frustrating! I do shoot in raw so I could put the raw file in dropbox later if anyone thinks they could have a solution. And I am using Adobe standard in both LR4 and 5.

Canon sd40pink camera and Iphoto
My husband wants to buy me an sd40pink camera for xmas. I want to make
sure that I am happy with not only the digital camera, but also with the
interfacing experience to my intel imac--which, today, for photos, only has
iphoto (no other software). I've read what I can from the Apple discussions
as well as what little I can find on the Canon web site. I have OS Tiger 10.4.8
Does anyone have any experience with imac OS 10.4.8, latest iphoto and
the sd40?
The only experience I have had was helping a visiting friend use my imac
to upload her Nikon digital pictures. Once I downloaded the Nikon software,
and "pulled" the pictures in from my imac, (versus pushing them in from
the camera), it worked great. Then I could import her pictures into iphoto. The best I can tell, this isn't how the Canon works. True?It should just work if you plug it in - keep the camera on, set it to Play mode (as if you were going to view photos on the camera's screen) plug it into your iMac's USB port. iPhoto will launch and present you with an Import button. Click it, and get all the photos downloaded to iPhoto.
Disconnect and you're done. That's it. -
When trying to sync my Apple TV and iPhone after the 7.7 update, iTunes will only recognize "Last Import", and "Last 12 Months" folders. It will not show any of my events. When I choose to import all photos and albums, they come over, but all uncategorized.
upon connecting you iphone / apple TV with itunes 7.7, has it frozen itunes? I have got iphoto to work, but the itunes issue persists. Any ideas other that deleting the preferences com.apple stuff or reinstalling itunes?

Canon PowerShot A480 and Snow Leopard 10.6.3
A friend and I will be taking some pictures together this weekend, I on my Lumix and she on her Powershot A480. Before she leaves, we want to exchange pics by just downloading them from our cameras to both computers. She seems to think that I need to download Zoombrowser EX to be able to suck the images off of her camera, but trying to find that to download (or ImageBrowser) has not worked. All I have found are updates, so I suspect I have to have the original from her CD first. However, I have a little card reader that works just great with my PNY SD card. Does anyone know:
1) Can I get ImageBrowser for my MacBook?
2) Or will the card reader work?
Thank you very much.
Bantylol, the first thing I managed to do was destroy my iPhoto. Since my computer belongs to my school, I don't have the system disk. I didn't worry about it because I don't like iPhoto. I just copy the images from the memory card into a folder on my computer, then work with them in Photoshop.
If my card reader can read her memory card, then I should be able to do the same, yes?
Thank you. -
Downgrade 10.9 to 10.8.5 and iPhoto issues
Hi all :-)
After upgrading to Mavericks from 10.8.5 i installed the new iPhoto and Aperture Versions and started them.
I was asked to UPDATE my iPhoto Library File and i confirmed.
Now the mess starts: I was trying all my apps and found that snapseed.app was broken in 10.9 Mavericks :-( I love this app and because of this i downgraded to 10.8.5 again.
Back in Mountain Lion i am (of course) unable to start my iPhoto Library because it requires the NEW iPhoto version which is only availiable in 10.9
Question: Is there a way to "reformat" my iPhoto Library to use it with iPhoto 9.4.3 ?
Thx oleHi Terence
Are you referring to the Library Manager's "rebuild library" option? Asking because I downgraded my wife's computer from Mavericks to Mountain Lion. Now her iPhoto Library (opened once in Mavericks) shows it's incompatible with iPhoto's Mountain Lion version. Would like to restore functionality without losing her albums etc (marriage survival training )

I cannot get the mac mail program to display photos from iPhoto except in a very small image. I have tried selecting actual size, large size, medium and small. The photo goes into the mail message as very small. I tried copying the photo to my desktop and not using iPhoto and dragging it into a mail message. Still small. I did not have this problem before Leopard. any idea?
when you add an image to a message, there is a little button "Image size" at the bottom of the message. Click it and choose the appropriate size.

I downloaded Photoshop Elements and now when I ope IPhoto I can no longer use the quick fix buttons. Elements immediately opens and I have to import the photo to do anything to it, even rotate it.
Do I need to take Photoshop off my computer and put it on an external so that I use it only when I want to maniupulate photos? Will my IPhoto return to its original ways?Hi zabawa,
Can you please tell that whether on clicking "Edit" button in Iphoto launches the Photoshope Elements. If this is the case then in Iphoto preferences external editor is set as "Adobe Photoshop Elements Editor". You can change that by clicking "Preferenes>Advanced>Edit Photos" and change it to "In I Photo".
If this is not the case then please tell on what action in Iphoto it launches the PSE.
Thanks,
Sanchit
