Canon raw CR2 files are 1.33 underexposed in LR3. Why?

Hi,
I'm fairly new to lightroom and have mainly used it for some workflow with JPG files.
I'm trying to do some work with CR2 raw files from my 30D and the RAW files appear approx 1.33 stops underexposed in Lightroom 3.6.
I have compared with the camera jpg in LR3.6, the camera jpg and CR2 in canon DPP software / Breeze Browser Pro / Picasa.
I can't understand it. No presets. everything I can see is off.
In Develop > Set default settings ...I see it recognises that it is a canon 30D
Any ideas?

Hi,
I take your point... it has been good working through things.
Unfortunately, I couldn't tell you what the original settings were as I deleted the files and re imported. Maybe I just clicked on something I shouldn't have! as the import was better.
But after investigation I think it may have been auto tone appplied. I found out how to remove it from import and later applied auto tone to some images and where the exposure should have been increased by ~ +.33 LR was in fact reducing Exposure AND reducing the Brightness setting too. So it was double wammy!
There is no real EXPOSURE difference between the picture styles in LR once the exposure is right for one.
I took the shots in RAW+jpg, Portrait picture style with saturation +1 (under studio lights with camera calibrated with an expodisc, and the light is also metered).
This gives me a good starting point from which I wanted to use LR to vignette, add some cool effects to multiple images and create some printing packages. For School Photos.
The LR match to DPP (Portrait > Saturation +1) appears to be roughly: Reset > Exposure + 0.33 > Saturation +10 > Process 2010 > Profile:Camera Portrait.
The image doesn't jump out quite as much but the sharpening is better than DPP.
I am finding you can do a lot more with LR than DPP but it's not always intuitive and the historgram is not as much help as the rgb output histogram on DPP which helps me get my print exposure spot on 99% of the time with ease and clinical precision - in LR its more by eye unless I'm missing something? If you use DPP you'll know what I mean
Thanks ssprengel!
OH... I re read your post camera portrait vs camera standard = no exposure difference BUT ADOBE STANDARD IS LOWER EXPOSURE and camera faithful / camera neutral is lower still.
And I think I noticed my original imports had both auto tone and adobe standard profile so that would make it about 1.33 exposure difference from DPP!!!!!!!!!!!

  • HELP! Cannot open Canon RAW (CR2) file in PP5.5.2 (Mac)

    Hi folks.
I cannot import RAW (CR2) files (Canon 5D2) files into premiere pro 5.5.2!
I can get them into After Effects (through cameraraw) but PP does not even show them as a "supported file type"
If I drag and drop from the finder I get "unsupported file type" error
My understanding is that CR2 files are supported in CS5.5
    Any ideas
MacBook Pro OS X 10.7.2 (Lion)
For the rest, everything seems to be "normal"
    Thanks in Advance

To use Camera RAW, you will need to process the files through a Camera RAW converter. With the proper ACR module, PS, and Lightroom will handle that processing, as will the Canon utility. With Adobe ACR, make sure to update to a version that handles YOUR camera's RAW files - mfgrs. tweak those model to model, so keeping the ACR module current will insure that you can handle the particular Camera RAW files properly.
I agree with Stephen's rec. to NOT use JPEG, if ultimate quality is of a concern. In PS, I just process my Nikon, Panny or Canon Camera RAW files to PSD. I would assume that the Canon utility would have the option for TIFF, as my older one does - there is no option for PSD in it. Do not know about the newer Canon Camer RAW processing, but TIFF should be just fine.
    Good luck,

  • Please Help, Very Frustrated - iPhoto 11  & Canon Raw(.cr2) files

I recently started shooting raw(.cr2) with Canon 6D (on the list), while on vacation of course.... while there I loaded all my images to my Ipad to save room, due to only having my 16gb memory card with me, yesterday I decided to take them off the ipad and store them in iPhoto where all my work is stored and back it up to my external harddrive,  I have tried for 4 hoursto figure out why it won't upload to iPhoto 11, nothing works, it acts as if its uploading and then after 30 mins it says unrecognizable format(see screen capture below).
I have read several other different forums and similar questions all the way back to 2005 and nothing seems to help, I tried making a smart album, updating the software, but iPhoto will not recognize the pics.  I did find one forum that said use Image Capture and do it that way, It worked to move them off the ipad but only to my extrenal hard drive with no image preview, saying it cannot open the file, all I eally want to do is have them load like all my other images into iPhoto which I use almost everyday and not have to go back to shooting jpeg along...PLEASE HELP any suggestions??

Thanks everyone...I tried and even downloaded the specific software released from Canon specific for Mac for my camera a Canon 6D... Nothing worked... IPhoto never would recognize the images....
BUT .....  in case someone else has this problem... I had to jump through hoops to figure it out... but finally with the help of several forums on here... I figured out a way to save my images and have them in a jpeg format to save for my memory folder for my daughter....so I did figure out a way to make it work...
If you transfer for images from camera(in raw format .cr2) to your ipad...... and cannot load them to iphoto like me....here is how to do it....
    1. I searched my Mac, it comes with a software installed called "Image Capture" find it and load your pictures on
your ipad to a folder on your desktop for easy finding.
    2. Search Google and Download Program Called Rawker....
    3.  Open Rawker... go to File
                                  a.  Select Batch - Select source Location - Select your file you saved your images in
                                  b.  Select File Batch - Select Source Destination - either make a file on your desktop or
select where you want your newly converted RAW/jpeg images to be placed
                                  c. Select File batch and Start Batch...
    4. After its done with the convert -  you can import that new .jpeg folder of images to your iphoto
Bunch of crazy circles because I was told it was better to shoot in Raw .cr2 ... NOT ... It might be if you have the right program but I guess none of the ones I tried worked....
Until I find a better way I will just go back to shooting in jpeg fine.
    Thanks again Everyone

  • Canon Raw (CR2) files seem to get corrupted after some times

    Hello
I use a fully registered Lightroom 5.3 with my Canon 5D Mark III, and I have this kind of corruption on some of my CR2 files from times to times. If i reimport the .cr2 file in another catalog or even on another the resulting file is still corrupted.
The wierdest thing is that the original import was successful and I successfully exported it several times correctly. The corruption should have happens afterward:
Do you have any idea where does this comes from? This is absolutely inacceptable from a professional software.
PS: I had this kind of curruption with an old version of Lightroom with my previous pentax K7d, but I though this was past
    Thanks you very much

Yes, -failing hardware (typically disk or ram).
    Gaetan St wrote:

The software is not corrupting them, it's just revealing existing corruption. (yeah, I know some apps can still display the jpeg preview without revealing the corruption, still... - Lr is a raw editor..).

  • Elements 11 will not convert Canon Raw-2 files to tif.

Dowmnloaded Elements 11 thinking it would convert Canon Raw-2 files to tif, but it will not why?

Can you open the raw files in the editor ? If yes, simply save your opened file from the editor in whatever format you want. The import dialog in ACR (Adobe raw converter) is only for the in-memory conversion to the Adobe image format; you have to save to the desired file format from the editor.
If you can't open your raw files, see:

    Hi Zach.
Sorry to say but Elements 12 came out several months before your camera. Adobe stops updating camera raw files for old software editions so that people have to buy new versions of the software when they get a new camera. It happened to me with LR3 when I got a new camera.
There are works rounds but they are a lot of extra steps and I think you would be converting the files to Some format other than RAW (tiff?) and which I am not sure will perform the same.
I think you just need to get a newer version of Elements.

  • RAW CR2 files from my Canon G11 not displaying thumbnails in SL finder. Why

I just loaded some CR2 RAW files from my Canon G11 last night. They displayed perfectly in iPhoto 09 but when I opened the folder the image files are in SL's finder I got icon placeholders which but no image icon display. I have loaded all the latest updates... Is SL no yet compatible with G11 RAW Cr2 files? Or do I not have something set up correctly as of yet?

  • Import screen cannot enlarge preview thumbnail from Canon G15 raw CR2 file

Lightroom 4.3 import screen does not seem to be able to enlarge for better viewing  the preview thumbnail from a Canon G15 raw CR2 file?

    HI,
I do not know the answer, but I would expect, that Lr only displays the embeded jpeg preview of your raw files. And I think, that the previews are small. You can use exiftool , exiftoolgui to see what's the dimension of your previews.

  • RAW CR2 files cause Bridge / PS CS3 to quit after Snow Leopard

    OS: Snow Leopard Fresh Install
    Camera: Canon XTi
    Files: Canon RAW CR2
Issue: Access of ANY kind to a RAW file causes the app(s) to quit.
Detail: Everything was fine in Leopard but for various reasons I did a fresh install of Snow Leopard. Wiped the drive and installed clean. Installed iLife 09 and then did any Apple updates. I then installed CS3 and did all the Adobe updates (Almost 600 MB). Used PS for some graphic stuff with no issue and thought everything was good until today. Went to Bridge and simply tried to navigate to my RAW photos and it quit. Tried opening a RAW in PS... same thing. Checked the ACR version and is was 4.6 but I reinstalled anyway... same. So, I uninstalled the fresh copy of CS3 and reinstalled to be safe... same. OK, now it was testing time. Navigated to the RAW files in Finder and can view them fine. I can quick preview them, open them in preview etc, so the OS raw support is fine. Same thing happens just trying to open the file with PS CS3 since it open using RAW.
I removed the RAW plugin and Bridge stayed open fine and displayed the files as generic thumbs. Put the plugin back and it dies again.
In Leopard the RAW Prefs were set to store the settings in the RAW database instead of sidecar files and I have tried putting the database file in from the pre-snow leopard backup. No luck. I am totally stumped any any ideas are welcome. I am about to restore the Leopard image.
    Thanks in advance,
    Razz

    Thanks for the idea Carolyn.
Unfortunately it did not fix it. I had tried it before and tried it again after your post. Thing is, it can't be the cache since the install of bridge has never been used. As soon as I load it and try to go view my files it quits. I would expect this from an upgraded SL install but an erase & install with fresh CS3 and all the OS and Adobe updates should be smooth. I really don't want to go back to Leopard but have to be able to mess with my photos. Why would removing the raw plugin stop the failure? It is 1 file, the correct version and fresh installed. Not sure what to do except maybe start over and yet that could still fail and takes a LONG time. I hate to upgrade to CS4 since I am not sure where the issues is.
Maybe install SL again over the top as an upgrade?
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks, Razz

  • Can't open Camera Raw (CR2) files in Photoshop CS3?

I can't seem to open Camera Raw CR2 files in Photoshop CS3, my CameraRaw plug in version says it's 4.6 - any help appreciated.

  • Problems with Canon 7D .cr2 files

Hello, this question may have already been asked but I have been unable to find an answer -- if it is in another discussion, please feel free to direct me there.
I have .cr2 files from a Canon 7D that produce significantly different results in Lightroom 3.3 versus Canon's Digital Photo Professional (3.7.1.1) software -- that is, the LR3.3 results show much poorer quality than DPP, with terrible grain throughout. There is also a significant color shift. These results carry through to output files (e.g. 16-bit TIFF, no compression), rendering Lightroom essentially unusable for developing my RAW .cr2 files, since they are not being rendered at highest quality.
Here is a 1:1 comparison below. This image below is a more extreme example to demonstrate the issue, shot at ISO 3200 f/5.6 1/100 sec.
And, albeit slightly more subtle, the grain is still clearly present in images shot at ISO 100.
I previously used ACR in CS4 to review my .cr2 files when I purchased my 7D fall 2009, but found the grain so distracting that I switched to DPP with much cleaner results. I chalked the grain in ACR up to an early pass at reading the 7D .cr2's. When upgrading to LR3 I expected the render to be better refined, only to find it as bad as ACR CS4.
If the grain is a permanent fixture of .cr2 RAW files in the ACR engine, LR3 is pretty much worthless to me. I had hoped to be able to quickly catalog/review and develop using the LR interface, instead of manually cataloging images, then going to DPP for TIFF output, and then Bridge/ACR for development.
Any insight or advice on a good fix would be much appreciated.

What noise reduction are you applying in LR?
LR's noise reduction in LR 3 is just about the best I have ever seen and certainly far superior to anything in DPP. If you are just looking at the initial preview then only a minimum amount of colour noise reduction and no luminance noise reduction is applied by default, where as DPP applies considerable noise reduction based on in camera settings. LR previews will not match DPP's inital previews of the files, but the tools in LR enable you to produce far better final results.

  • Why has LR4 suddenly started to refuse to download RAW CR2 files?

Today I went to LR4 and tried to import RAW CR2 files into the program using the usual import process which is pretty automatic. I also asked that copies be saved as DNG files. No matter what I tried, I got an error message saying that the files could not be imported. I use a Canon 5D Mark III. The only difference in today's shoot was that I used and HDSC card instead of a CF card. No other obvious changes. Clearly, this is a serious concern. What amI missing?

    Hi,
I too have been having trouble importing CR2s consistently using Lightroom 4.3. I use a Canon 5D Mark III with Macbook OS X 10.7.
Spoke with Canon this morning and apparently they are getting a few calls about this problem. For me, it is not a permissions issue.
I swapped cards, cords, reinstalled Lightroom and updated everything. I bought a card reader and that is the only thing that works.
Seems to be some kind of communication problem between Lightroom (4.3) and my Canon 5D M3.

  • My CR2 files are being saved as PNG and not PSD

When I import files into Elements 12 Organizer, I want to use the Instant Fix Smart Fix option. The CR2 files are being exported to the PNG format, and I want them to be PSD files, I don't have a way to return to the options of how to save my files by using the Instant Fix button. I really would appreciate some help on this. I can't seem to get any tech support by navigating the Adobe Web site - I always land in the Forums.

In PSE12, whenever I want to use the smart fix option in the organizer for a raw file, I get a dialog with various format options and the possibility to check one of those formats by default. If I check the checkbox to always use that format and not to display the menu, I find myself in the same situation as yours.
I don't know of a way to get the menu back... Deleting the organizer preferences should help, unless other users have a better idea.

  • Canon Raw (CR2) import issues, Windows Vista home premium

I can import JPEG files directly from my camera (EOS 400D)using Lightroom but I cannot import my raw CR2 files, for some reason Lighroom simply does not recognise that they are there.
I therefore use another program to import my Raw files onto my hard drive.
Once they are on my hard drive Lightroom will let me import my raw files.
My question is how do I get lightroom to import my raw CR2 files directly from my camera?

Plus multiple other good reasons/benefits of using a card-reader... such as...
No cord to accidently get pulled and camera to fall to floor, can download card and still go out and use camera, and can copy pictures to ANY computer without having special software installed... plus can use card as portable flash drive for other file types.
I personally don't allow Adobe to copy from my card even from a card-reader after their initial problems with 1.0... I copy all my files to a folder on HD, ensure all have been copied, then allow LR to Move and Import photos from that temporary holding location. This also allows me to do other things (like geotag the images) before I actually do my import into LR.
