Canon Raw File Conversion

I have a canon eos 60d and shoot in raw.
When I convert to jpeg with the canon dpp program i get really good results.
When I user Adobe Camera Raw in PS Elements 10, I get v grainy jpegs, I have tried playing with the settings etc.
I would like to use adobe as it has more controls and I prefer the colors of the finsihed files, but want to know how to get good results with it.
What can anyone suggest I do ? Is it noise reduction that canon is doing and I need to somehome turn on in Elements. Normally I do a batch convert, then go back and touch up any images that need it ?

Make sure you are not working with any previously saved custom settings. If in doubt choose Camera Raw Defaults or re-set the defaults.

  • Can't open Canon RAW files in LR1.3, Photoshop, Bridge

    Hi.
I'm having a problem with some Canon RAW image files a second photographer sent me. He sent about 800 files and I'm only able to import into LR (1.3) about 15% of the files. The remainder will not import. Upon import, LR says something to this effect: "files appear to be unsupported or damaged." I tried them on both of my macs (my G5 and laptop) and had the same thing happened. Photoshop says: "Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognize this type of file."
They show with this icon: file:///Users/marthafitzsimon/Desktop/Picture%203.png
When I do the "get info" on these files, under "General:" it says, e.g., that a file is a 10.8MB file. Under the "More info:" box, it says the dimensions are 0x0 (that's weird because when I look at this for other good files there are numbers for the dimensions).
This is a picture of the "get info" window:
    file:///Users/marthafitzsimon/Desktop/Picture%201.png
I have tried to open these files in LR, Photoshop, Bridge and Preview and nothing will open these.
The files are locked so I unlocked one, but that made no difference whatsoever.
I noticed one thing about the naming convention on the files, but I don't think this matters. My own Canon RAW files always have the .CR2 extension. All of his files have the .cr2 extension. Mine are all uppercase and his are lowercase. However, I don't think this could matter because the files I was able to download of his all had the .cr2 extension, just like the ones I couldn't download.
(PS: Just in case you saw my earlier posting, this problem has nothing to do with that. This is another second photographer's files that I'm having problems with. Jonathon LeFaive solved that other problem for me.)
Thank you for any help you can provide! Martha

LR 3 is a complete new build so it will not overwrite the earlier version of LR 1.3 or its catalog or other settings.
The install procedure will recognize your LR 1.3 catalog and ask if you wish to create/ convert to a LR 3 catalog. This procedure will not overwrite your 1.3 catalog but will create a LR 3 compatable copy.
Download the trial which is good for 30 days before you will need to pay the upgrade price of $99 if you decide to keep. The trial is the full package and you will not be restricted in any way.
The new features are a substantial upgrade with significant improvement in the conversion output of your raw files.
Full details are provided in the "read me file" included with the download which should be read carefully before you install. The decision should be a no brainer.

  • Raw File Conversion

What is better for Raw File conversion, Aperture or Adobe Camera Raw in PS CS2? I'd heard there was more noise in the Aperture conversions. Do people manage their photos in Aperture and export the raw file to PS for conversion if PS is better?

i agree with Paul. it depends on your Camera.
I am a photgrapher and use for most of my work now the Nikon D200. Sometimes Canon EOS-1 Ds mark II. I use Aperture 1.5 and Adobe CS2.
Now i have tested Adobe Lightroom beta4.And I have to say that for the workflow i prefer it over Aperure.
I have made the experiance that a picture with a lot of highlights looked unseable in Aperture , but was good once opend in Photoshop RAW converter. One step further: a picture shot outside, almost in the dark with only some light left from the lamps in the street, looked very bad in Aperture and Lightroom, once opend with Nikon Capture Editor it turned to be a great Picture in full scale size at 300dpi. I guess this is possible because they know exactly how the RAW is processed in the camera and their software is only dedicatet to Nikon. I think it should be the same for all other cameras. The only trouble is that Nikon Capture is very slow. But good work needs time:-)
So my conclusion is to use Aperture or Lightroom to organise and preselect the shoots, as well to make a webgallery for selection to the client.the selectet RAW picture i will then open in Nikon Capture and set the corrections. Then I open it in Photoshop to refine it and retouch. finaly save it as PSD or any other format desired.
There is one programm that I guess does the same high quality work on RAW files for all cameras and that ist Capture One Pro because of its dedicatet RAW conversion to each Camera type. I just dont lik the interface and its another 500 $ or so.
i hope this was ahelp to you.

  • Display a Canon raw file as shot in Aperture?

I believe a number of settings are saved along with the image in a Canon raw file, such as. White Balance, colour space, Saturation, Contrast, sharpness and picture style as well as a few more things. Is it possible for Apreture to display the image with these "as shot" settings? A previous piece of software I used to use on a PC called Breezebrowser displayed the image prior to import (conversion) with these as shot settings but allowed you to alter these if required. If this could be done then I would find it a good starting point before post production adjustments are made. Hope this makes sense.

The short answer is no you cannot - yet. The best way to accomplish this is to create a series of preset templates that you can lift from prototype images and stamp to your imported images as a set of baseline adjustments. If you like the way that the in-camera settings are rendered just shoot RAW+JPG for each of the settings and then match the RAW to the JPG for each different setting for your starting points.
I am not real familiar with Canon stuff but if the WB is rendered a little differently that is the biggest pain in Aperture because it is one of the only adjustments that are not relative, it's absolute - so unlike brightness, contrast etc. you can't bump it up a little or down a little with a preset you can only assign an absolute value.
Hope this was at all helpful.

  • Just upgraded to 10.8.4 and now can't open canon raw files in photoshop cs5 with camera raw plug in 6.7

i've just upgraded to os 10.8.4 and now i can't open canon raw files in photoshop cs5 with camera raw plug in 6.7 which worked perfectly prior to the upgrade....anyone else encountered this issue?

Adobe's software is a mess in terms of the fact that it's sprayed all over the place and may not survive an OS upgrade.  Try reinstalling Photoshop CS5.

  • Aperture 3.1 can't find/see my Canon RAW files when importing

Aperture 3.1 cannot see my CANON RAW files when doing import!!!
Do I really have to re-reference each image in the library if I have moved the library to a different volume? Images are not moved to the library, only referenced.

You don't want to re-import files if you move the library. You just need to reconnect the masters.
If you moved the whole thing over at once it should be easy; if you monkeyed with the folder names you could have a lot of work on your hands.

What camera generated your Canon raw files.
A lot more information about your hardware and software is needed.
    BOILERPLATE TEXT:
If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand,
such as your platform (Mac or Win),
exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CC", but something like CC2014.v.2.2) and of Bridge,
your settings in Photoshop > Preference > Performance
the type of file you were working on,
machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, total available HD space, video card specs, including total VRAM installed,
what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far,
    what error message(s) you receive,
if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them,
if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.
a screen shot of your settings or of the image could be very helpful too,

  • When i open my Canon RAW-files with preview or transfer them to another program using preview they change to color despite the fact that they where all shot in B/W... How to change this?

When i open my Canon RAW-files with preview or transfer them to another program using preview they change to color despite the fact that they where all shot in B/W... How to change this?

    I shoot only RAW - no JPEG-files except those visualizing the files on my memorycard or computer. I think i have to refine my question;
    1. I know there is possible to make B/W HDR-images.
    2. I know the best HDR images are based on RAW-files.
    3. When i transfer the images in question to a HDR software they change, so when i view them in the software (either Preview or the HDR software) they are suddenly viewed (and processed) in color.
    4. This never happend on my PC so i know it has to do  with either Finder or Preview.
    5. Do i have to make all my B/W HDR-images on the PC or is it a way for me to change how Finder/Preview show/alter my images?

  • How do I open .CR2 Canon Raw Files in PS Elements 8 for iMac

When I open a .CR2 Canon Raw File (Canon T3i camera) in PSE 8 for iMac, I get all greys - no color.  It is showing as color as a .CR2 on my desktop - when I bring it into PSE, it is grey.  I chose first 16 bit, then 8 bit.  Same result.  What am I doing wrong?  Thanks.  George

Thank you Barbara for pointing this out. Since I'm new to forum stuff so missed the catch here. Got exactly same information as you posted. Got to know that ACR 6.2 doesn't support T3i files. It's ACR 6.4 which supports them but is incompatible with PSE8 ( http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/407/kb407111.html ).
So the solution seems to be either upgrade to a newer version of Elements or download the free DNG Converter ( http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/extend.displayTab2.html ) and convert the raw files to DNG.
Thanks again for correcting me here

  • Options for Canon RAW files?

I have a PowerPC at the office running 10.5.8. I am a graphic designer & photographer. Previously I was able to use iPhoto with my older DSLR to import Canon RAW files. I've upgraded to a Canon 60D and iPhoto no longer reads these new Canon CR2 files. As you know, CS4 is the latest version of the creative suite I can use on this Mac, and Photoshop CS4 doesn't open these RAW files either.
I checked out Adobe DNG converter but it won't run on this system.
Are there any options or is it just time to upgrade to a new Mac?

I don't currently have the install disc with me, but I can try that later when I remember to bring it with me.
I went to the Canon site to download a driver and it either is not available for my OS, or says I don't need it.
I want to do all of the above (import from camera/SD Card, open, convert/modify) in a seamless workflow. I use Lightroom 4 at home which I love but only have access to iPhoto at work.
    Thanks for the help!

  • Canon RAW files

Is PSE 12 compatible with Canon RAW files? I have just bought a Canon 5d Mk III and PSE 9 doesn't recognise the RAW files. I need to be sure I can convert my RAW files in PSE 12 before I upgrade. I also had a similar problem with PSE 9 crashing every second time I opened it and when I tried to back up the catalogue. Took the advice about creating a new catalogue and it seems to have fixed the problem. Now I have to work out how to back up the old file.....

While Photoshop Elements works with Raw files, each new camera requires updates to the Camera Raw plug-in. To work with the Canon 5d Mk III you need Camera Raw version 6.7/7.1 (http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html).
Not all versions of Photoshop Elements will work with all versions of the Camera Raw plug-in. To use the Camera Version 6.7 you need Photoshop Elements 10. To work with Camera Raw 7.1, you need Photoshop Elements 11 (http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html).
So Photoshop Elements 12 will be able to work with this camera straight out of the box.
To work with this camera in Photoshop Elements 9, you would have to convert your raw files to DNG with the free DNG Converter.

  • Camera Conector and Canon Raw files

    Hi
I have a Canon 30d, looking at buying a Ipod 30gig to use as a back up whilst shooting and filling a 1 gig cf card rather than keep buying cf cards...
Will the ipod accept the raw files? and will I be able to view the photos ie can an ipod read canon raw file format??
    thanks
    Steve

    Hi
Whether or you can transfer raw photos from a camera to the iPod via the camera connector I don't know. However, I do know that on the older iPods (the ones with the color screen which can't play video) you could transfer a movie (mpg) that you had shot on a digital camera. Although the iPod couldn't play the movie, you could see tell if the movie had transferred, and you could then transfer the movie from iPod to the computer with no problems. Thus, it may be possible to transfer raw photos from camera to iPod via the camera connector and then from iPod to computer. However, the iPod CANNOT display raw photos, so even if you can transfer them, you won't be able to see them.
    Hope this helps

  • Canon 5D mark II raw file conversion size blowout

I am suffering from an issue where my CR2 files from a 5D decrease in size when converted to DNG  from for example 14.4MB to 11.8MB while the 5D mark II files increase from 8.7MB to a much larger 23.6MB after conversion. Both conversions are being done with DNG Converter 5.4 using the same preferences. Any light you could shine on this for me would be greatly appreciated.

It is because your 5D Mark II files are sRAW images, not raw. (The full 5D Mark II raw files are usually over 20 MB, not ~8 MB.) When you process sRAW files into DNG files, the DNG files are stored in the "linear DNG" format, which is much bigger than the sRAW format.
p.s., these questions should be directed to the Camera Raw, Lightroom, or DNG forums in the future to get a faster reply.

  • "Bad" colors/banding when going into Edit mode with Canon RAW files

Just got my iLife '06 suite yesterday and ran into something very disturbing: something wrongwith the colors of RAW files once you go into editing mode. In the library view, they're fine. Try to edit one, and after a few seconds, there's a final refresh of the image window that heavily alters and bands the colors. (Looks almost like a poor conversion down to 256 colors or less - it's that bad).
This is happening on Canon 300D and 20D raw files, and did NOT happen with iPhoto 5. The RAW files open up and display just fine in Preview (as well as 3rd party apps) - problem is in iPhoto 6 only. I've already sent in a bug report - has anyone else tried double-clicking on a RAW file to go into Edit mode yet?
    David Miller

I use Huey from Pantone to calibrate my monitor for consistancy in different lighting situations and across applications. But the same effect happens by choosing any one of the non-standard monitor calibrations.
    Try this:
Choose a RAW photo and monitor calibratioin that causes the banding and discoloration.
Open the RAW photo in Edit mode and wait the couple of seconds for banding to appear.
Next, adjust the image size slider so that scroll bars appear at the bottom and right side of the photo. It doesn't take much. Notice the banding disappears!
Now grab one of the scroll bars and move it. Observe the banding and discoloration. And, when you release the scroll bar the banding disappears again.
I don't remember this happening with iPhoto 5.
I think it has something to do with the display
calibration. After I first saw this I switched back
to my default iMac G4 profile, and the problem wasn't
there anymore. I'm not sure what the difference is. I
set up several different profiles, each with
different choices for Advanced, White Point and
Gamma, and some trigger this banding, and some do
    not.
    Anybody have any similar experiences?

  • Single Raw file conversion to .dng

Sorry if this has been asked but I can't find any tutorial on .cr2 file to .dng file conversion.  I usually shoot RAW+jpeg on my Canon 50d.   I am using CS3 and understand the need to convert my Canon Raw to the Adobe Dng format for PS processing. I downloaded and installed the free dng converter.  I just can't seem to find a way to convert a SINGLE raw file into a SINGLE .dng file, it only wants a whole folder full for conversion.  And am I correct in that Adobe isn't writing a plugin to let CS3 do the conversion?  Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!

You could copy the single CR2 file into a folder all by itself, then run the DNG converter on it.  And I'm not completely sure, but I think I've heard of the ability for the tool to convert a lone file by providing the file path on a command line.  Thus you could drag a single file to the DNG Converter icon if you had it on the desktop.
And you're correct - you're not going to get new camera support in the Camera Raw 4.x series that works with Photoshop CS3.  Adobe stops adding new camera support when a new major version of Photoshop is released.  But they do provide the (less convenient) DNG Converter for free.
