Canon Rebel EOS XSi and EF Lens 70-200/4/L IS U

Having trouble getting clear action shots of high school football games at night. No problems until after dark.
This is my first post. Would like to know if I will ever get good clear action shots using this lens or will it never have enough light. Thanks for your help

f/2.8 lenses are rather expensive.  So I thought I might offer an alternate suggestion.
You Canon XSi body is rather old and has a max ISO of 1600.  Of course "at" max ISO the images will be extremely "noisy".  Shooting max ISO on any camera will be loaded with noise, but usually backing off 1 to two stops worth of ISO is a huge improvement.  For considerably less money than the cost of an f/2.8 zoom lens suitable for sports, you might instead consider a new camera body with substantially better sensor performance.
Even a T3i would be a big step up in ISO performance (ISO 6400).  Shooting at ISO 1600 is no problem and shooting 3200 is still ok (a bit of noise but nothing that can't be managed in software by doing some de-noising and a bit of edge-sharpening (avoid over-all sharpening as that amplifies noise.))
Ultimately a 7D II (not shipping until November) would be THE camera to have (ISO 16000 ... but backing off a bit from max ISO would still let you shoot in the ISO 3200-6400 range without even hesitating.)  It also has a phenominal focus system and blazingly fast continuous burst speed.  Canon has a retail price of about $1800 (body only) but go check the prices on f/2.8 zooms and you'll see that's still a savings.
Buying an f/4 or even f/2.8 lens is going to get you 1 to 2 stops worth of improvement.  Buying a new body may get you 3+ stops worth of improvement, plus improved overall performance of the camera.
Just something to consider.
An excellent point. Note that the new camera would improve the high-ISO performance of all the OP's lenses, not just the 70-200.

  • I have the Canon Rebel EOS T3i and was wondering what is the best setting to take firework pictures.

How can I get great pics of fireworks with my Canon EOS T3i??

For this kind of photography, it is essential to have no movement of the camera at all.  Here are the settings that have worked for me:
    1. Tripod - this is an absolute must for any kind of night photography, including fireworks.
    2. Cable release - since you can move the camera just by pressing the shutter release, you have to activate the shutter without touching the camera.  You can do this either with a cable release or with an infrared trigger.  Be sure to get the correct cable or remote for your camera since they differ from one model to another.
    3. Use manual mode and activate Live View whenever possible.  The flipping of the mirror within the camera can also generate movement, so Live View is very helpful.
    4. Use an aperture of f/8-f/11.
    5. Use ISO 100.
    6. Focus at infinity - you can manually zoom during the exposure for an interesting effect.
    7. 4 second exposure to start and adjust up or down based on your results.
    8. You will likely need a wide focal length such as 35mm to start, and then adjust as necessary if you have a zoom lens.
    9. Other possible adjustments - set the White Balance to 5300K; set the exposure compensation to -1.0 EV. This is a full 1-stop underexposure to keep the firework highlights from burning out.
I haven't posted photos to this forum before, but if this works, here's an example of what I mean.  This was shot last summer with a Canon 60D, 4 second exposure at f/11, ISO 100, 32mm.

  • I am trying to download pictures from my canon rebel  eos to my Ipad but i get the message "this device is not supported" what can I do ?

I just bought an Apple Lighting to USB Camera Adapter. When I got home to and connected it to my Canon Rebel EOS Digital Camera. I received the error message "This device is not supported" I was wondering if there is any software or drivers I need to download?
    Thanks
    Don

I use Canon Cameras and have no problems downloading photos from the camera to the Lightning to USB Camera Adapter. My questions and suggestions might be basic but just to make sure:
    1. This is an iPad forum area. Are you using the lightning to USB camera adapter with an iPad? Your info in your original post says iPod. I'm not sure that the adapter works with an iPod.
    2. After you connect the adapter to your iPad and then use a USB cable to connect the adapter to the camera did you turn on the camera?
    3. If you did turn on the camera and still did not get the import of photos to start try a reset your iPad. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. This will not cause any data loss.

  • What do I need to process raw files in Photoshop CS5 for a Canon Rebel EOS t4i?

What do I need to process raw files in Photoshop CS5 for a Canon Rebel EOS t4i?

You would need ACR 7.x which is available in CS6.  Or as ertho said you can get the free DNG 7.3 converter and convert raw to a DNG.

  • Which Speedlite Flash will work with my Canon Rebel EOS T3 1100 D?

Hi, I am new to the digital age and over 55 years old.  My husband bought me a Canon Rebel EOS T3 1100 D in July.   (I fought the "technological" upgrade until my old Canon film camera quit on me.)  I've been taking pictures since 1966, so I'm not new to photographing, just to our technological advances.
I would so very much appreciate if anyone could help me with which Speedlite flashes will work with my specific Canon T3 Rebel 1100 D camera.
Thank you so much for your time.

I've just received my 430EX II that I purchased for use with my Rebel T2i. The main reason I purchased the Canon product was....in 60 years of using Canon products I've never had a failure or a bad experience. I've been using the 430EX ll for a few days and I'm quite happy with the results. Far, far better than the built in flash. It's on sale now with free Fed X shipping. That's hard to beat.
Best of luck with your new camera.

  • HT203088 I have the CANON REBEL T5 1200D, and when i connect it to my mac which is 10.10 the new OS X YOSEMITE it says that it "Cannot be used with this version of the operating system" why does it say that?

I have the CANON REBEL T5 1200D, and when i connect it to my mac which is 10.10 the new OS X YOSEMITE it says that it "Cannot be used with this version of the operating system" why does it say that if my camera is listed under the supported digital cameras for OS X YOSEMITE?

Put simply, the minimum system requirements for iTunes have changed. You need a Mac running at least OS X 10.6.8.
It's best you look online to see if your model of Mac can be upgraded to at least 10.6.8 "Snow Leopard". It should still be possible to order a copy of Snow Leopard if so.

  • Need the right flash unit for Canon Rebel EOS T3i to use as separate fill light.

Im looking to have a separate flash unit for my Rebel T3i purchased in 2012.    My old Canon speedlight 300EZ was for my old 35mm. film Canon EOS 650 and is somewhat limited.   I have a Phottix Strato II Multi Transmitter and Receiver set but I can't get it to work with the old 300 EZ speedlight.
    Thanks,
    Zeida Cecilia-Mendez

A Canon 430ex would be a good flash for not a lot of money. So would a Phottix Mitros.
The best thing would be to have 2 or 3 flashes so you can shoot with a more 3-d professional look, though you'd need an extra receiver or else you can simply buy a pair of Phottix Mitros Plus flashes, which have a transmitter and receiver built in. I have 3 of the Mitros + units and I love them.

  • HT3583 I just purchased a Canon Rebel T2i camera and need to know if Aperature 3 will support the Raw files from this camera

Will Aperture 3 support Canon Rebel T2i Raw picture format?  I just got the camera and am disappointed that their software does not yet work with the Lion operating system.  They said driver would be available in the first quarter of 2012 but when I checked it still is not on the list.  I will upgrade to Aperature 3 from Aperature 2 if it supports the Canon T2i Raw files.  Any input is appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • I have a 70-300mm lens and a 35-80mm lens for my Canon Rebel EOS t3 what should I buy next.

Alright so i have 2 different lenses and a desent tripod, but i don't know what to purchase next. I don't have the need for a big flash and i have a camera bag. My boyfriend got me a fisheye lens attachment so i'm covered in the fishing section (haha i think i'm funny). Anyway am i missing something big?

"... got me a fisheye lens attachment ..."
How about a real fisheye like the 8-15mm f4 L USM.  This is a most fun lens.  It is the oppisite of a long tele.
How about a macro like the 100mm f2.8 USM?  They open up a whole new world to you.

  • Canon Rebel EOS T3 12.2 MP

Does anyone know if I can get "prints on canvas", like from Shutterfly?  I'm just curious if this camera has enough megapixels for
prints to be put on canvas in larger sizes.  I'm new at photography so if I sound like an idiot, I apologize.

Don't feel wierd about the question...it is actually a legitimate one.  The T3 has 12 MP, so that should give you just enough resolution for a 20x30 print.  I wouldn't try printing to much larger.  How large are you planning on?
I'm an advanced amateur, am not the average point-and-shoot photographer out there, and am willing to take any critique or advice that will improve my photography.

  • Canon Rebel EOS XT

I am tring to reset my camera to factory settings.  When researching this, I do not have the five tabs with the clear settings that everyone says to do.   Can someone help.  I only have four tabs and no clear settings.   Thanks

Assuming that you do have an "XT" (not to be confused with an XTi) then here's the manual for your camera:
    http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/8/0900000278/01/EOSDRXT350DIM-EN.pdf
See page 35 which explains how to reset all settings as well as just reset any "custom functions" (custom functions are described starting on page 145).

  • Need extra batteries for Rebel EOS SL1 - suggestions?

I just got a new Rebel EOS SL1 and would like 2 extra batteries. The Canon batteries are so expensive. Does anyone have reommendation? Hate paying for a Canon battery, if a generic 2nd-3rd party battery would do. Yet, are there advantages to only using the expensive Canon Batteries? I did have another brand camera and bought cheap generic batteries off of ebay that worked wonderful. However, with this new Canon Camera, I'm wondering other Canon users experiences with batteris for the Rebel cameras.

Yes... the canon batteries last longer and have more recharge cycles in them. I find that while generic 3rd part batteries cost about 1/3rd the price... I have to replace them three times as often.
As reliability is important to me, I ultimately gave up on third party batteries.

  • IPhoto CRASHES when I try ti import short video shot with my Canon Rebel..HELP!!!

HELP!    I have a Canon Rebel EOS T3i.  I shoot many wonderful still pixs.  I have also shot some video (movies) during recent cruise which I was able to download and edit properly and include it in my overall Cruise Album.
I have been editing all this on iMovie, importing the photos, videos, adding titles, effexs. etc.   Suddenly -TODAY- iPhoto is not letting me shoot an additional short video to include in the Album.   When I IMPORT the video from the Canon into iPhoto,  and click PLAY, iPhoto CRASHES!    Something is wrong and I don't know what it is.

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on eight different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary from version to version and OS to OS. So before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.

  • New Canon Rebel XSI, and Aperture won't read the .CS2 files properly??

    Hello all,
I have read through the posts but didn't fine one that answered my question. I just bought a Canon XSI and tried to upload my RAW files to Aperture, and first it showed the "unsupported image format" red screen. After messing around I could get it to see the images, but they were the size of thumbnails. It will read the JPG files fine. The Aperture site says that the CR2 files should work. I also tried deleting the rawfile in the system folder and re-ran the installer for 2.1 update, didn't change a thing. My Aperture version is 2.1.1. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    John

Lucked out and figured out the real problem thanks to Mark Olson's blog:
    http://markolson.ca/2008/07/17/canon-eos-450d-rebel-xsi-cr2-raw-on-mac/
It turns out that the problem was related to RAW+JPG. Mac does not import the RAW files properly and I should have suspected this being the problem when I noticed the RAW file size was way too small (exact same size as the JPG file).
Luckily I had not deleted the files from my memory card so I was able to go back and import the RAW images again. Now at this point I'm going to ask Steve to cover his eyes because I had to use Vista to download the files!
    All seems ok now.
