Canon SX1 IS

http://www.letsgodigital.org/en/20036/canon-powershot-sx1-is/
I'm looking at getting this camera (or one like it) that shoots both video and stills. Because it shoots HD (1080) I'm wondering what kind of harddrive space I'd need in order to download movies from this thing. Also, can HD movies be "downgraded" as I don't have an HD TV at this point and would probably like to burn DVDs.
Any input is appreciated.

trojak,
Thanks for the comments. I don't think it will arrive here in the states until April or May so I'll have some time to do a bit more research. The reading I've done of it seems to show it is a superb camera. I'm interested because I want something that will do both video and still photography. Right now I have a Nikon 5400 and an older mini-dv video camera. I've been transferring the mini-dv tapes to DVD but would like to end that practice by just downloading the whole movie digitally into iMovie or iDVD and doing things from there. Seems like it would cut down on the processing time, etc. Any way, I'd love to here more of your likes/dislikes as you come across them with further use. Thanks for you response.

  • Canon SX1 IS and RAW conversion

    Hi
I have Aperture 3 and it does not support RAW for my Canon SX1 IS. Is there any probrams out there for converting to an acceptable format for A3

Aperture works with most DNG files generated from cameras that support this format and with DNG files generated by the Adobe DNG Converter with the “Convert to Linear Image” option turned off.

  • Using fce 4.0.4 with a Canon SX1 IS

How easy is it to use the Canon SX1 IS with my version if fce? I'm pretty comfortable using fce with DV and mini DV source material though directly from the camera and/or digitized files. Thanks.

The media from this camera is not directly supported in FCE. You'll need to convert it to QuickTime using the Apple Intermediate Codec. You can probably use MPEG Streamclip to do this.

  • Raw import .cr2 files with Canon SX1

    Hello !
Should Aperture be abble to import .cr2 raw files ?
If so , why can'nt I do it with my new SX1 from Canon ?
    Thanks
    Marcel Jacques

In the meantime try Adobe Digital Negative Converter (DNG converter): http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/ not positive it will be compatible with the SX1 CR2, but Aperture will read the converted DNG. The concept is that although these proprietary formats may come and go, the DNG format is here to stay for Decades to come. +worth a shot+!

  • Canon SX1 IS - not supported?

    Helo @all,
I decided to buy Aperture 3 - but there is only "unsupported picture" in trial version when I'm trying to import my cr2 raw-data. Is there hope for any help next days or isn't Apple interested in selling this product to me?
    Thanks for your answers.
    Regards eres2

    Hi coln,
yes, I tried Lightroom also - with support of my raw-data. But using Aperture 3 (trial) is a more "fluid" workflow ...
A workaround for me is converting my raw to dng with Adobe DNG converter and after this working with Aperture. Maybe Apple isn't in love with Adobe because of flash - but Aperture would be no choice for us without Adobes converter. Sorry Apple, I don't think this is the right way for you. But I have nearly 30 days for my own decision. If there's no help from Apple I will love DPP in combination with Image browser for no money at all.

  • Canon CR2 RAW and PhotoShop CS4

Just got the RAW update for my Canon SX1 IS.
Neither Bridge CS4 nor PhotoShop CS4 (both fully updated) recognise the format despite CR2 being listed in the Bridge file associations for PhotoShop CS4.
In Bridge I just get a file icon.
In PhotoShop I get a 'file type not recognised' type of message.
Must I use Canon Digital Photo Profession to convert to TIF for processing in Adobe Camera Raw, or am I missing something?

Thanks for the tip Ellir. I downloaded 5.4RC last night and it didn't have support (tested) and today official 5.4 gets released with the support. I feel lucky
And to whiners, I'm just asking a question. I really feel that forums would have warmer welcoming and less elitism. But oh well.
Anyways SX1 problem solved, tested and it works. Thank you Adobe.

  • Canon 500D and Snow Leopard 10.6.2

After I upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.2 my Digital Camera Canon500D is not detected anymore...although i removed its driver and installed it again ..no improvements still not detected either in Finder or with canon utilities or Iphoto or aperture.
    Any suggestions.

I'm not familiar with your model (in fact, I couldn't find a 500D on the Canon support site), but I have a Canon SX1 IS and had a minor problem with the Canon software no longer being compatible with Snow Leopard. Canon has since updated that software (Digital Photo Professional). Or what type of software are you referring to - I'm not aware of having to install any driver. If you plug it into the USB port, it should just show on your desktop. Another possibility is to simply use a card reader for now with your USB port - that is how I transfer all the images. As soon as you plug that in, you should get the reader's icon on your desktop and you can copy/transfer/download the images from there.

  • Canon DPP incompatiblity

Has anybody had any success with Canon DPP (3.6.2) in Snow Leopard?

  • Crazy to install CS2 on Quad Core 64 bit Windows 7 notebook?

I've been a video producer/director/editor since 1970 and have witnessed most all the progress and insanity of the "corporate wars" to dominate video production and later, video editing.  I no longer see any reason to differentiate between still photography, video production, editing, web authoring, print production, graphics, CGI, CAD etc...ad nauseum. My dream has long been to have one very powerful laptop that could do most everything that a creative person desired on location anywhere in the world.
My new notebook is an ASUS Quad Core G71GX with 6 GB RAM - an Nvidia Geoforce GTX 260M - and 2 - 500 GB, 7200 rpm hard drives - Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit OS. These days I shoot most video using a Canon SX1 IS at 1080 30p and the files are playing back beautifully on the 1920x1400 display at full frame rate. So for me that covers the basics. I will be upgrading from Windows 7 Home Premium to Ultimate shortly. Does anyone have issues/questions about the platform?
As to the software . . . I have been using Adobe stuff for 20 years or so.but did not get into their video editing products until Premiere 6.5. Than I jumped in with both feet and became a beta tester for the CS2 video collection. I still have my complimentary Premiere Pro 2.0 and it still works on my older XP Pro notebooks.
But now we are here in 2010 and all the major PC platforms are running 64 bit Operating Systems and I just figure that I should hold out for a true 64 bit Master Collection [which many people call CS5]. In the meantime I decided to install my CS2 Creative Suite and Premiere Pro 2.0 just so I could have the benefit of these programs while I am waiting for the 64 bit to release.
I purchased my CS2 back in 2005 as a download and last night made the attempt to install it onto the ASUS. As expected the serial number did not work so I called Adobe Installation support and got started after they prompted me for the "challenge" code. When I entered it the installation began nicely UNTIL the first folder [CS_2.0_UE_Ret_D1] finished loading and UP POPPED a window saying "Please insert CD #2" with only an OK button. Well, I didn't have any CDs because the suite was delivered as a download way back when and there seems to be no way to get to Disk 2 folder.
I finally decided to Quit the install when up pops a window that says [paraphrasing]. Your Photoshop program on Disc 1 has been verified and so try again to install. I said OK and up pops a window with all the various programs and the option to select Install. I selected each one [except GoLive because I now have Dreamweaver CS4] and proceeded. I sort of kluged my way through the transition from D1 to D2 to D3 to D4 folders and by all indications had a successfully installed, registered and activated CS2 suite on the ASUS notebook. Restarted the machine.
Opened Photoshop and up comes an error message "Your Adobe Photoshop user name, organization or serial number is missing or invalid. The application cannot continue and must now exit" "OK", which I pressed and Photoshop closed. Checked the other CS2 programs and none of them would open.
I would appreciate any pointers on how to get CS2 Creative Suite to install properly since Adobe Tech Support says such installation help is out of date and recommended this forum.
BTW: I run Videography Lab and am the "seminal author of videography". OCT 1972 American Cinematographer. I have a different take on the meaning of videography than most folks. After 38 years of research and contemplation I believe "Videography means 'I know to write' or conversely 'writing my knowing'" The platform that I've been talking about is the technology tool that enables such communication in "the Age of Videography" [Miller Freeman Publishing - 1996].
Call me crazy and than help me get this sorted out
Bob Kiger - [url removed by host]
PS: Does anyone beside me expect a sudden and dramatic shootout between Final Cut Studio & Adobe Creative Suite soon?

    Hi Michael--
Upon continued research we found your statement "CS 2 isn't compatible with Windows 7 32-bit no less 64-bit." not quite true. We grant you that, in it's raw state, Windows 7 will not install, activate, register etc. CS2 programs. That's been the Adobe position for quite a while.
Now that we have Windows 7 in hand and can play we found that if you have Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate edition you can acquire for $89.95 and download/install in an hour or so "Windows Virtual PC" and "Windows XP Mode".[Note: This feature is not available on Home editions].
We purchased the platform and once it is installed we had a "Windows XP platform" on our Windows 7 machine. From that point forward the installation of CS2 and many other of our old favorite programs was a snap. We've opened and worked with Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign etc. with no problems.
And, by the way, Premiere Pro 2.0 intalled easily on Windows 7. We're testing it now with some sub-1080p projects.
As to the long nagging problem of Adobe Installer not recognizing the downloaded CS2 CAB files during installation, we worked around by just saying OK when the installer asked for the next disc and immediately clicked on the desired disc in a seperate exlorer window which contained all the download files.
So that's the workaround for us. Now we wait to see who wins the race to enchant users with 64 bit editing and imaging suites.
    Thanks for all your help.

Before we go off the deep edge here, perhaps some clarification.
What is the brand/model/settings for the Canon camera that you are using?
I think that Hunt may be being jumping ahead here. Let me explain....
For example, the Canon SX1 lS generates files with the file name starting with MVI_XXXX.mov. These are AVCHD.mov files 1920 x 1080p30 and have no problems in Premiere Elements 12.
So, I would ask "In your case, is your MVI the file extension or the beginning of the file name?"
    Thanks.

  • PPro CS4.1.0 comments

    Just installed 4.1.0 upgrade.
Tried VOB import with PAL VOBs.  Picture fine.  No audio.  Anyone else done any better?
Tried still image export - great improvement not having AME open, but I would prefer if there was an option to automatically import the still into the PPro project.
1080p 30fps H264 footage from my Canon SX1 IS still camera still plays back very hesitantly from the timeline with intermittent audio (Core 2 Duo 2.8GHz + Win XP Pro SP3 in 2Gb RAM).  OK if I render back to 25fps.
Depending on others' comments, I'll submit a bug/enhancement report.

Thanks, Hunt, for the nudge about the origin of the VOB files.  I've just tried again with some of my own and their audio works just fine.
It looks as though VOBs with AC3 audio work OK on the 4.1.0 timeline, but those with MPEG-1 Layer 2 audio are silent.
I've submitted a feature request for an option to auto-import exported stills.
As for Harm...  silly snide remarks do you no credit. Since I've been using Premiere and related software since 1996, I think I am able to judge by now whether it meets my requirements or not.  It is a perfectly good editing technique to export stills for subsequent use on the timeline for freeze-frames etc, which is why I want to have auto-import.   And one of the items enhanced by 4.1.0 is H264 playback, which is why I found it disappointing that there seems to be no improvement in handling the type of H264 footage that I generate with my still camera, which takes extremely good 1080p footage at 30fps.

  • Nikon P7000 and .NRW in Lightroom 3.2

I just got the new Nikon Coolpix P7000- and Lightroom seems does not seem tor recognize its RAW .nrw images. Is this a known issue? If so, is there a workaround?

Cornelia-I wrote: Hi clvrmnky,I do not quite agree that you always need a DSLR for shooting raw consistently.Of course that is the preferred way.
Raws  from a Canon G12 are phenomenal. I had read a few people say there's no  reason to bother with raws on a compact... - I disagree. There may have  been no reason to bother with raws on the Canon SX1 with a 14MP 1/2.3"  CMOS sensor (which Canon pulled off the market, presumably due to  embarassingly poor image quality, that and it wasn't selling well at a  price point well into DSLR territory), but the G12 raws & Lightroom  were a match made in heaven! - especially with Adobe Standard profile.  Interestingly enough, the camera profiles aren't too swift, yet -  granted, the camera is not officially supported yet (uses G11 profiles).
Anyway, when I don't want selective focus, I'm not  shooting things that are moving around too fast (especially in low  light), or I'm shooting macros of things that don't mind me getting in  their face (and if I don't mind a wider field-of-view for those macros,  and the lens won't block all the light), I can get just as good results  with the Canon G12 as I can with my Nikon D300, if not better.
Stopping a D300 down to f22 (or f36...) to take a macro that I could  get with a G12 at f2.8 (or 4.0...)  just doesn't make sense to me -  unless you really like using tripods and really don't like sharp  macros. Again, if you want more focus selectivity and you're not going  to stop it down past f16 or so then the table turns again...
Likewise,  "2D" landscapes (meaning uniform non-selective focus) taken with the  G12 at ISO-80 have suprising image quality, dynamic range, colors, ...,  and are tack sharp - edge-to-edge, corner-to-corner - minimal  vignetting... Literally better than a D300 except maybe if you have a  standard focal length FX lens on it, or a $2000+ pro wide angle lens  (I'm guessing here - I don't own any of those).
And if you want something really close and really far away to be sharp in focus - you have to shoot it with a G12 - you can't get it with a D300.
Don't  get me wrong - I "love" my D300 for taking photos of birds fluttering  about before the sunrise, with the lens open wide and the ISO cranked  up, and for isolating subjects from a busy background..., or creative  macros... But, right tool for the right job, ya know...
PS  - Substitute your favorite high-end compact for the G12 (I'm sure the P7000 is just as nice - same sensor / great lens...), and your  favorite DSLR for the D300 (adjusting aperture considerations  accordingly)...
PPS - Cornelia - you're welcome. And,  you can start using those S95 raws in Lightroom right-away, with a  little help from exiftool and/or the importer.

I shoot video on a Canon SX1 IS. in 1920 x 1080 30f/s h264 MOV files. If I edit less than 4 Min of Video in PE7 all is well. 5 min of video causes low mem warning from PE7. No message from Windows. Adobe tech support said it is a windows virtual memory issue talk to Microsoft, but nothing else. I have HP support but they said it is outside the scope of support. For $ 60 I can get better support one time but no guarantee. I tried Reg cleaners, manual setting virtual mem at 18 GB. That helped  a little. Rebooting helps., but in the end I get "program not responding" or other failure messages. I have read other posts but they were talking 40 min of video or more. I have had no problems with video from my old Sony I have edited over 1 1/2 hr. but 5 min of DH video brings it to a halt.Is anybody editing from this model Canon with sucess? I can play video from the camera with HDMI cable and it is beautiful. Any ideas?

I can understand how it would help process time but helping memory is a strange concept. Since less compression means bigger files. Memory management is way beyond my understanding. I have been working with computers since the PET and TRS80 with 2 kb upgrade and I want to use a hammer some days. I feel Adobe has a way to go with Memory management so that we can just open the program and edit video. I can understand taking a long time to process data in virtual memory but why the "program stopped" message? It is as if virtual memory is not used. Also data not used at the moment could be sent to the disk. It would be a lot slower but no memory crash. I can remember running large databases on 8 bit machines with 64 kb of memory. Of course a large database was smaller than one or two sec of video.
    Thanks for the reply
