Canon Vixia HD MTS Files

I've recently purchased my first Mac and now I'm discouraged because the Mac doesn't support MTS files.  One of the main reasons I purchased the Apple iMac was because their focus on media (video and audio).  I searched the App Store and I can't find any applications like iMovie that supports the MTS file format.  Windows 7 handles this format with no problems in their media player or Adobe tools.  I can't believe there isn't a product already in existence for this file format for Apple.  Converting thousands of MTS files to another format isn't an ideal solution.  The MTS file format is standard for many HD video cameras today.  I would appreciate any assistance and guidance anyone can provide.

No matter you want to play MTS footages on Mac, or edit them with any Mac editor like FCP or iMovie, you can just solve it by doing a conversion. What I am going to say here is that you need a third-party tool to convert MTS to MOV, the best format for iDevices or programs. (See how to do it here.)
Again, the exact tool you need is simply an MTS Converter. If you meet the incompatibility problem again in the future, you can just think of using a converter to help convert your videos/audios to files with certain formats so that you can smoothly use them.
Hope that help!

  • Canon Vixia HF20 - .mts Files on Premiere - Do they work?

How can I edit my .mts files from my Canon Vixia HF20 on Premiere Pro?
I downloaded the trail version of Adobe Premiere Pro (CS4) and when I try to upload .mts files from my Canon Vixia HF20 (harddrive HD camcorder) they are not recognised.  Simultaneously, I see on some posts elsewhere on the web that the full Premiere version does recognise these files... If the trail is suppose to work the same as the full version, I have my doubts about purchasing it.
If the files aren't recognised, are there plans in the future to enable these files in future versions?
    Please let me know.
    Thanks,
    Kyle

    Kyle,
    Welcome to the forum.
This entry in the PrPro-Wiki will give you a lot of info on the trial version, including the MPEG limitation that Colin mentions.

  • PE9 and Canon HF S100 .mts files

I have been searching the forums for a while and looking through the help file trying to find out why the video I shoot with my Canon HF S100 camera is crap after PE9 gets done with it. Granted I am new to all of this, so I am not pointing any fingers at this point and hope this it is just my ignorance. The .mts file is listed in the supported formats of the help menu. I am shooting 1920X1080 and the camera is set to 60i for the frame rate. I am still leaning the lingo and what it all means. The rendering in the timeline looks just as good as the original footage and I add a few transitions, and titles, etc. The render turns out great and i save the file only to watch a bunch of grainy or wavy video.
I tried to just add a video with no editing and save it to a DVD and it is the same poor quality. I guess I assumed that PE9 would select the best output settings based on the source file. I read that previous versions of PE had problems with the mts format, but never used them, so I hope that what I am getting is not the Adobe idea of a supported format.
I apologize in advance if I left out any or all details you need to provide any type of guidance. Thanks for any help.

I read one of your other posts about the red lines above the video in the timeline and don't have any red lines. unless I add affects and don't render.
Not sure why I assumed that I could save to a DVD format and expect the same quality as HD. I thought it was just a space thing and not formating. I am just testing a few different share options. I am wanting to save the files to my computer to gain a little confidence before I start creating BluRay coasters. I used DVD since I could save to a file on my PC instead of the DVD for testing.
I am opening the origional and PE9 video in Windows Media Player.
Thanks for any pointers and I will have to head over to your site once I get a basic video created to get more excited about this process and technology.

  • I need a definitive answer for using Premiere Pro CS4 to work with .m2ts and .mts files

I have a Canon Vixia HF20 and a Sony HDR-XR350V.  The Canon gives me .MTS files and the Sony produces .M2TS files.  What do I need to do to be able to work with these files in Premiere Pro?  I've searched and gotten that I'll need to purchase a codec.  But are both file types going to be good with one codec?
Also, what are the steps to getting started?  Purchase the codec, load the codec...Will there be any other steps to working with the files in Premiere?
I'm sorry for the basic questions, I'm a photographer!  I've never worked with video before, and this is HARD!
    Thank you for your help,
    Michelle

    Hi, Michelle.
I'm nowhere near the authority on this stuff that many of the others are here, but I have Premiere Pro CS4 and I work directly with AVCHD .mts files from my Panasonic camera. I simply browse to the directory where the .mts files are located and drag them into the project. I didn't need to purchase any additional codec, this is natively supported in Premiere CS4.
I can't speak to m2ts files as I don't have any gear that generates them.
One thing you do need to know, however, and this is important. Whether you're running a Mac or a PC, if you're going to work with high def footage such as AVCHD, you're going to need a fairly high performance computer with sufficient RAM, good performing hard drives and a fast CPU.
I tried this on a PC that was fine for my recording studio (audio), fine for professional software development, but choked and stuttered working with HD material. That's not a problem with the Adobe software, it's just the nature of the beast. HD is extremely demanding stuff, so you need top flight gear to work with it. I bought a higher performance PC and now it runs just fine.
    Hope this helps,
    Chris

  • Converter for MTS File?

Is any converter for convert MTS file to quick time?
    do anyone know it?
    Thx...

MTS format is a high-definition MPEG, AVC, H.264 transport stream video file format which commonly used by HD camcorders such as Sony, Canon, Panasonic.MTS files are used primarily with Sony hardware. Camcorders make use of MTS in the form of AVCHD, a recording format made specifically for camcorders. Some camcorder models from Canon also use MTS files. These files are also present on Blu-ray disc compilations, therefore they are capable of storing quite a large amount of information and data tracks.
Since mts is not a mac suitable video format, so it's necessary to convert it with mts converter for mac, you can choose the output video format as quicktime mp4.
Hope you resolve your problem asap!

  • How to import MTS files from Canon Vixia HF M40 to Mac for editing?

I recently bought a Canon Vixia HF M40 and I have been able to import the MTS video files to iMovie, but now that I want to edit in Adobe Premiere, I am at a loss. Can someone tell me an easy way to import these files to either my computer or into the program itself for editing. It is entirely too time consuming to import into iMovie and convert every single file to quicktime only to import into Premiere and export yet again (not to mention the quality loss). Thank you for any help you can give me.

  • Importing and burning mts files from my Canon Vixia HF20

I have the HD camcorder Canon Vixia HF20 (and love it btw). It creates .mts files. I downloaded the software that came with the camcorder for Macs, but it does absolutely nothing for me (as far as I can tell - maybe I am doing something wrong).
I downloaded VLC so I can watch the .mts files and it works great. However, I am completely stuck on how to a) burn them, b) transfer them to a file format that allows me to burn them.
I have a new Mac desktop and am a novice at using it (I've had a laptop for a while before the desktop). Thus, I don't know how to use iMovie. Everything I read says imovie will be able to burn the files. However, when I open iMovie, choose "import," it doesn't allow me to import anything b/c they are in the .mts file format. It's like they are "blacked out" and incapable of being uploaded from my computer's hard drive to it.
So, I'll quit rambling. I've researched this ad nauseum, so any help on how to burn these files would be so greatly appreciated. I do not have File Cut Pro. Thanks!

iMovie versions 7, 8 and 9 can import that file format but only from the camera.
Once you move the files off the camera you'll have to jump through some hoops to convert them.

  • Canon Vixia HF S10 and .mts files

I want to know if I can move an AVCHD .mts file from my Canon Vixia HF S10 camera to my hard drive some place, or archive it, and then drag it into FCPX and start using it.
Or do I have to have it on my camera in order to get footage into FCPX?
I hope not. This is the same problem I had with FCP 6.3. If I moved the .mts files onto my HD, the log and transfer feature of FCP wouldn't recognize the footage. That's pretty stupid I think.
    Any thoughts out there?

I have an HFS100 and yes BUT don't just copy the .mts files.  I copied the whole folder structure across not just the .mts files and started editing right away.

  • Canon Vixia HF S100. and .MTS files

I just bought a Canon Vixia HF S100. When my SD card was full I copied al the files to an external hard drive. Now I'm trying to edit and see everything with imovie, but the files are .MTS files and imovie can't read it. What can I do???. The software that the camara brings only works on PC not on mac.

    andreamad wrote:
Can I try to copy the .mts files back to the sd card and try to download directly from the camera to the new imovie?? Could that work??
No, unfortunately - unless you've kept the whole AVCHD folder structure together. When you're camera records, it puts files into a set of folders with a folder called AVCHD at the top level. If you just copy that and all its subfolders to disk, iMovie can usually deal with it. But if you separate the .mts files, iMovie can't make sense of them any more. Hence using intermediate software.
Your Mac is easily tough enough to handle AVCHD, and so you could upgrade to iMovie 09 OK - but that won't help with the problem you have with this current set of files. Try MPEG Streamclip - it.s free after all, and it will solve the problem.
In future, if you have multiple SD cards, you could simply stick the card in a card reader and have iMovie pull from that - although connecting direct to the camera as you suggest is also fine.

  • Cannot ingest .MTS files from Canon Vixia HF S200

I have an iMac, OS 10.6.8, Intel Core 2 Duo processor.  I'm using FCE 4.0.1 and MPEG Streamclip 1.9.2.  My camera's parameters are:  video compression MPEG-4 AVC/H.264; 1080/60i frame rate; FXP (17Mbps) mode.
With the camera powered and plugged in (USB), when I select File>OpenFiles in Streamclip and select all ".MTS" files in the AVCHD>BDVM>STREAM folder I get the following message: "Unrecognized file type".  If I choose download anyway and choose File>Export to QT, I get the following error message: "Can't read the frame size".
If I remove the SD card from the camera and download onto my 2TB HD and move one ".MTS" file into Stream clip, I get the following message:  ""WARNING "00304.MTS" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure.  Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media".
I also tried moving the entire BDVM folder (which includes a BACKUP folder [empty]; a CLIPINF folder; INDEX.BDM; MOVIEOBJ.BDM; PLAYLIST>00000.MPL; AND STREAM into Streamclip with the same results.
Simply put, I can't get Streaclip to recognize the camer's output.  I can't figure out what's wrong.  It would seem that what I'm trying to do should work, i.e., convert the camera output to AIC for input to FCE.
    George

    MtD,
It's my understanding that FCE 4.0.1 can only ingest DV or AIC using Log and Transfer.  I thought that one had to use something like Streamclip when h.264 is involved by converting to AIC.
Also, among my many attempts, I'm pretty sure I tried Log and Transfer and received a similar message.
By reading other posts, I'm wondering if I'm trying this at the wrong layer, i.e., at first I accessed just the ".MTS" files, then I tried the STREAM folder.  I wonder if I have to bring over the the whole BDVM folder, or possibly the whole AVCHD folder.
This is my first attempt to work with this camera.  That's why I'm a bit screwed up.  Previously, I used a Canon HV10 and downloaded into iMovie HD.  Then, later versions of iMovie started giving me poor results so I bought FCE.  At about the same time I broke my camera and bought the HF S200.

  • I have MTS files imported from a Canon HD cam. They import into I movie and I see them in the Finder folders and they preview fine. I have a new project and some of the clips are freezing and some audio is now gone? Do i need a file converter and convert

I have MTS video files that import from a Canon Vixia HF S20 HD camera. I imported into I Movie. They converted into MOV files and I see them in the movies folder in finder. They view fine and run through the events folder in Finder. In I Movie, I created a new project and used a "Theme". The project worked fine at first but then some clips started to freeze and some lost audio. The effected clips are the same in the project library and in the event library, meaning they are froze in both places. As I said when i view through finder the MOV files preview and work fine.  Is this inherent to MTS files using in I movie. SHould i consider using a file converter to convert to MOV files prior to importing into I movie.
I found on Apple support site info that states the MTS files can only be imported through the camera. I am developing my back up procedures and now I am faced with backing up in the original MTS files but not being able to reload if necessary into I movie. Any suggestions?

I'd like to add that after I import these clips without thumbnails, iMovie does give me an error and say that they could not be imported. No explanation as to why, though. Again, they play fine on my camera.

  • How to view original video files from my Canon Vixia

    Hi -
I have a Canon Vixia camcorder and I cannot find a way to view the original mts files on my iMac.  I hate to say this, but my old windows laptop to does this without any issue, so that's what I'll continue to do until something changes.
When I mount the camera on my Mac, it only shows one giant AVCHD file.  I have read the posts about using iMovie to import the AVCHD file and then export the individual clips, but frankly that ***** for a few different reasons that I don't really feel the need to explain.
Why does Mac not allow me to simply view the files as they are on the camera?  I don't edit with iMovie, I edit with Premiere and the original mts files are just fine with me.  I love my iMac and all my other Apple products, but let me view my files! ...please?
    Thanks
    Joey

AVCHD utilizes a proprietary container format. The MTS files are in there, you just have to know where to look.
Navigate to the root directory of the memory card. You should see a rather large (depending on how many clips are on there) file called PRIVATE. You need to right-click that and select "Show Package Contents". Inside, find the file AVCHD, right-click it and select "Show Package Contents". Inside, find the file BDMV, right-click it and select "Show Package Contents". Inside, find the folder STREAM and open it. You should find the MTS files there.

  • Will imovie 11 (version 9.0.8) be able to import the MP4 files from the Canon Vixia HF R 400?

I realize the camcorder is just available now but I assume the MP4 files are the same as in the R300 from last year. I just want to be sure that imovie 11 will be able to import andedit the MP4 files from the canon Vixia before I purchase the camera.I understand that imovie has trouble with some MP4 files and works fine with other ones. I don't want to transcode into another format and generate gigantic files of data. I also understand that the videos with AVCHD has better video but I prefer a easier workflow. I imagine one day Apple in it's infinate wisdom will eventually support AVCHD.

    two options:
    • not exhausting - go to
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/cameras/en/index.html
these devices are tested by Apple 'bout functioning with iM
    choose one = works. guaranteed.
    • exhausting - learn about codecs, containers, bitrates .....
in short: AVCHD is a standard, details e.g. here at wiki
standard means: some settings are conform, some not. example: no 120fps in AVCHD.
    note: there's vers1 and there's a new vers.2 .......
    mp4 - just a container, or 'wrapper'.
means: like a box of chocolate, you could never know what's inside. example: 120fps in mp4.
    but ........
    AVCHD nor mp4 are 'codecs'.
    here comes h.264 - could be in a AVCHD/mts, could be in a mp4.
    iMovie: respects standards.
    does NOT import non-standards-conform files/videos/datas.
encode a 1080video as 30p/h264 = would 'fit' into AVCHD
    encode a 1080video as 60p/h264 = would 'fit' into AVCHD2 (=not supported by iM11), would 'fit' into mp4 (= iM11 supported) ...
mp4 is more ... 'open minded', more general; lacks therefor stuff like gps location data and other meta-tags.
the next iM13 should support AVCHD2, it's bigger brother FCPX does .....
    last word:
iMovie is NO general 'cuts all movin' pictures'-app!
it is meant for consumer convenience with consumer devices.
=> supports the most 'popular' standards. not anything.

  • Canon Vixia hfm31 videos (MTS) won't import into Premiere Pro CS5

I have a lot of footage on a Canon Vixia HFM31 HD Camcorder. Yesterday I tried to import into Premiere and got an error message saying the MTS format was not supported.
The clips DID import with iMovie.
Do I need to purchase a converter from a 3rd party vendor to be able to get MTS footage from the Vixia into Premiere. Seems strange that it worked so seamlessly with iMovie.

When you open the New Sequence dialog, does it look like this:
...or do you have significantly fewer presets available? If you have less, your installation has been reverted to trial mode--this is a problem that occurs after updating Premiere. If so, the only way to get back to full operating status is to reinstall the software.
Specifically, what you need to do is:
Deactivate your installation (Help > Deactivate)
    Uninstall Premiere/Production Premium/Master Collection. Reboot.
Download and run the Adobe CS5 Clean Tool. Reboot.
Repeat step 3 at least once more, preferably two or three more times
Reinstall and reactivate Premiere, and then update
It's a pain, indeed, but it's the only way to get back up and running.
If, however, you do have all the presets, give us some more detail on the files and how you're trying to import them.
