CANON VIXIA HF S10

Hi,
I am still using FCP 5.1.4 and I am very happy with it. I was told that I wouldn't be able to use this FCP version with the new HD camcorder CANON VIXIA HF S10.
Could someone advise me ?
Thanks in advance
Ivan

Yeah, I think your only hope is to find some other software to capture or ingest the footage,
then convert it to a codec that FCP 5.1.4 supports, like DVCPRO HD.

  • Canon Vixia HF S10 and .mts files

I want to know if I can move an AVCHD .mts file from my Canon Vixia HF S10 camera to my hard drive some place, or archive it, and then drag it into FCPX and start using it.
Or do I have to have it on my camera in order to get footage into FCPX?
I hope not. This is the same problem I had with FCP 6.3. If I moved the .mts files onto my HD, the log and transfer feature of FCP wouldn't recognize the footage. That's pretty stupid I think.
    Any thoughts out there?

I have an HFS100 and yes BUT don't just copy the .mts files.  I copied the whole folder structure across not just the .mts files and started editing right away.

  • Canon Vixia HF S10 and FCE4 - Log & Transfer

Please help. Have been trying for hours and can not find the answer on line, at least one that works. I have a Canon Vixia HF S10 and every time I attempt to "add clip to queue" I receive a red octagon that states "Error: No Data". I am using FCE4, or trying to at least. Does anyone out there know how to resolve this issue?

    Hi -
Verify that you are using FCE 4.0.1.
Open the Log and Transfer window.
Click on the little gear shaped icon towards the upper middle of the L&T window
    !http://www.spotsbeforeyoureyes.com/L%26TPrefs.jpg!
Select Preferences from the drop down menu.
When the preference window opens, set the AVCHD Plug-In audio format to Plain Stereo.
Now try connecting the camera and see if you can import your files via Log and Transfer.
If there are clips on the camera memory that are recorded with different settings, this can cause problems. The clips need to be all HD clips.
    Hope this helps.

  • Good setup for editing Canon Vixia HF-S10

Am using a Canon Vixia HF S10 and want to edit. Thinking about an iMac 24 inch with
    2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
    640GB Serial ATA Drive
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 512MB
    and Final Cut Express
I see no reason why this wouldn't do the job, but would like some feedback from more experienced videographers and/or editors.
    Thanks

You may be right lenn5. It is an amazing little camera. Not just the image but the way the controls are set up. It can be used fully manual. Its manual focus assist feature is especially good. When you start operating the manual focus knob on the front to one side of the lens, it jumps to a close up, a sort of instant zoom that allows for very precise focus. This helps to over comes what I anticipated to be a real short coming, the absence of a view finder. The real test will come when I have to focus in bright sunlight. It has a "brighten view finder" feature which is supposed to help with that. We'll see.

  • Canon Vixia HF s10 + iMovie '11 -- I must be doing something wrong...

I am trying to download video from a Canon HF s10 to iMovie '11.  I am recording to an SD card.
I put the card in card reader attached to my iMac (I have 10.6.7 running).  I go into iMovie, then go into File, then go into Import.  In the Import dialog/finder box, I click on Canon, then Private, then AVCHD, then Canon, but it doesn't permit me to download, and it doesn't show the four test clips I have made.
Do I have some of the camera settings wrong (I turned off image stabilization, and I made sure it is not on 24 fps or on cinematic), or is it something else?  I know the files are there -- I can play them back on the camera.  Or am I missing some intermediate step?
It is so easy to import with the Flip...
Many thanks for the forthcoming guidance.

You do not need to drill down into the file menu with this camera. It will not work. You just connect the camera and the import screen comes up. If you are drilling down into folders, that will not work for an AVCHD camera.
Here is a tutorial of how it should work.
Here is another good Tutorial from Ken Stone.
If you still can't see the camera after watching the Tutorials, I would check the following.
    1) Can you see the icon for your mounted SDHC card on your desktop (or in the Finder)? If you cannot, you have a faulty card reader or USB connection.
    2) If you can  see the card, try making a Disk Image of the card using Disk Utility. Then mount the disk image on your desktop and import from there.
3( If you have a faulty card reader, try importing directly from the camera. A USB cable should have come with the camera. Be sure the camera is plugged in to AC Power (not batteries only). Follow the directions for your camera for which settings to choose.
    4) If it still doesn't work, I would call Apple and Canon.

  • Canon Vixia HF S10 won't even mount to Macbook...

I've got this camera and I know people are having problems with the AVCHD log and transfer issue but this thing won't even be recognized by my fairly new Macbook Pro via USB cable that came with the camera.
Forget trying to figure out how to deal with files, I can't even see the camera...
    Any help is appreciated immensely.
    Thanks,
    B.

    Hi -
Are you asking if you should be seeing the camera mounted to the desktop? Some Canon cameras do not do that, unless you are recording on an SD card and move the card to a reader that is attached to the computer.
You should plug the camera in via USB to your computer, making sure you have the correct connection option for USB set +on the camera+ as I believe it offers an option to connect to a couple of different formats. I believe a menu option appears on the camera when you connect to the Mac to make sure you are connecting correctly.
Once connected, open FCP and go to the menu File > Log and Transfer and see if you can see your clips. Log and Transfer only works with HD clips, so if you have multiple format clips on your card, you may have difficulty using Log and Tansfer.
    Hope this helps.

  • Will FCP X work with the Canon Vixia HF S10 ?

The HF S10 doesn't appear on the compatibility list.  If it currently doesn't, is there a work around to import files?  Thanks.

Hi pleibowitz. If what you are saying is true, and FCPX can only read from a camera and can't read and edit an MTS file that has been, say, archived on a hard drive, then I can't use FCPX. That's really disappointing. I don't want to pay a bunch of money for some software that can't read my video files except from the camera. How do I archive my original footage, then import and use it later?
This is really sad. All I want to do is be able to drag an MTS file from my HD into FCPX and have it let me start editing with out a bunch of conversion, or transcoding, or converting into ProRes. It just eats up too much HD space. I love how FCPX uses the Metadata and imports it all, but come on, can't I use it without?
I can only assume the metadata that FCPX uses in somewhere else on the CF card or Flash HD of the camera.
I guess I'll be sticking with Premiere. It reads AVCHD .mts files beautifully, from anywhere. Very nice. I may not have all the metadata stuff, but at least I can archive and move .mts files around where ever I want with the confidence that I can use them later.

  • IMovie '09 & Canon's VIXIA HF S10 Camcorder

Does anyone know if I will be able to use Canon's VIXIA HF S10 Camcorder with iMovie '09 without running into any issues when it comes time to output my video at it's highest resolution?
I ask only because this particular camcorder is Canon's newest consumer model and it boasts 'Effective Pixels' specs of 3264 x 1840!!
Anyone have any idea about this? Thanks!

I've Had this camera since it was released. Although I am new to recording and editing with this camera and a mac I can say it seems to me to be pretty easy.
I made this HD film on that camera you can check out on youtube here.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkZraGq2RKM
I think it's a great camera. You may find that if your a pro about filming and editing that there can be some issues, but for me at a beginner level I don't really see any. I think that there might be some super HD quality minor transfer grubs that I had read about, but I am unsure what those are nor how they are caused. I think that at the camera's highest recording quality, the imovie interface may show some degraded picture.
I say go out and get the camera, it is amazing. I only wish I knew of a class I could take to teach me of all the details an shooting options.

  • Canon  Vixia HV30 capture issue on CS6 (Mac OSX)

This might be (hopefully) something in setup, but under Mac OSX Lion (10.7.4) / Premiere CS6, i am unable to capture video from my Canon Vixia HV30 - it's either i get a monstruous noise or simply get a 'capture device offline' message.
No one ever had a similar problem even withanother cam here? I posted weeks ago but never got any reply.
Am using the same cam under Windows with Premiere CS4 and never faced such an issue.
Matter of some sort of CODEC ?  Does not seem to require any specific driver for Mac based on Canon website.
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks,
    Rob

    Solved... (Almost!)
Someone pointed out that Canon has a software (they said there was no driver for Mac OS X so I had stopped looking...) But if it may help others, there is a ''CameraWindow'' for Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8  available.
As soon as I installed it, I could capture both from Adobe Premiere CS6 and iMovie.
One problem remaining though : the noise (feedback-like) that gets out from... the system's sound card ! (when capture is ongoing). I have to shut down the volume completely.  Never had this issue under Windows, need to figure out why this happens now.
Jeff thanks again for your assistance, even though the solution was somewhere else.
If anyone has a clue for the noise issue ... please let me know

  • MacBook Pro won't recognize videos on my Canon Vixia HG20

I have a Canon Vixia HG20 and had no trouble copying video to my Mac laptop in the past. Now I have a MacBook Pro and when I connect the camera with a USB cable, the videos are grayed out and the computer doesn't recognize them. The videos play fine on the camera itself. Also, the still photos show up on the computer and transfer easily. I've seen older posts & sites (2008, 2009) that are related to this issue, but I'm not sure they apply anymore. Any new help for 2012 out there? Please explain in layman's terms, as I am not very technically literate. Thanks!

Go to the Canon Drivers and Software page here and download the March and April software updates for OSX Lion. This should help in transferring video.
There is also a firmware update for the camera here.

  • How to import MTS files from Canon Vixia HF M40 to Mac for editing?

I recently bought a Canon Vixia HF M40 and I have been able to import the MTS video files to iMovie, but now that I want to edit in Adobe Premiere, I am at a loss. Can someone tell me an easy way to import these files to either my computer or into the program itself for editing. It is entirely too time consuming to import into iMovie and convert every single file to quicktime only to import into Premiere and export yet again (not to mention the quality loss). Thank you for any help you can give me.

  • How to view original video files from my Canon Vixia

    Hi -
I have a Canon Vixia camcorder and I cannot find a way to view the original mts files on my iMac.  I hate to say this, but my old windows laptop to does this without any issue, so that's what I'll continue to do until something changes.
When I mount the camera on my Mac, it only shows one giant AVCHD file.  I have read the posts about using iMovie to import the AVCHD file and then export the individual clips, but frankly that ***** for a few different reasons that I don't really feel the need to explain.
Why does Mac not allow me to simply view the files as they are on the camera?  I don't edit with iMovie, I edit with Premiere and the original mts files are just fine with me.  I love my iMac and all my other Apple products, but let me view my files! ...please?
    Thanks
    Joey

AVCHD utilizes a proprietary container format. The MTS files are in there, you just have to know where to look.
Navigate to the root directory of the memory card. You should see a rather large (depending on how many clips are on there) file called PRIVATE. You need to right-click that and select "Show Package Contents". Inside, find the file AVCHD, right-click it and select "Show Package Contents". Inside, find the file BDMV, right-click it and select "Show Package Contents". Inside, find the folder STREAM and open it. You should find the MTS files there.

  • How do I import video from my canon vixia hv40 into imovie?

How do I import video from my canon vixia hv 40 into imovie?

First decide which editing program you intend to use; iMovie, FCE, FCP, Adobe Premier, etc. Read the user's manual or Help files for your chosen application to determine the steps needed: the procedure will vary somewhat from application to application.
Next, with the camera and the computer off, connect the Firewire cable to both units, then power up. Set the camera to VTR (play) mode. Open your editing program and follow the instructions provided in the Help files for capturing DV footage from tape.
Do NOT expect the camera to mount on your desktop as if it were a hard drive or optical disc.

  • How can I get Premier Elements to recognize my Canon Vixia  HV40 to record tape from it?

I recently installed Adobe Premier Elements 12 on my new Lenovo U310 Ideapad computer.  I opened the program and was able to transfer a clip from a file transfered to me from a smart phone recording and start assembling a new home movie.  However, when I tried to get video footage from my Canon Vixia HV40 tape camcorder, I received a message "No HDV camera connected.  I then used my older Canon Vixia HV20 camera and changed the USB connecting cable, but that camera too was not recognized.  In the past, I had been succesfull using an older version of Premie Elements to get footage from my Canon camera.  Is it possible that this new Premier Elements 12 is not programed to pick up  these Canon video cameras or is their some way around this problem.  My new computer does not have a 1394 input.

    TR Snevac
As far as I have ever seen reported DV or HDV data capture into Premiere Elements Capture Windows (any version) does not work unless the connection is firewire. And, there are occasions (especially with HDV capture firewire) the require that the capture firewire be done in HDVSplit and then the split clips imported into a Premiere Elements project via the typical Get Media/Add Media route.
Which version of Premiere Elements allowed you to do a DV or HDV capture firewire in to its Capture Window using a USB connection? From what you wrote it gave me the impression that you were saying that you had.
If you have followed the protocol for HDV data capture firewire into Premiere Elements 12 (with correct project preset)
    http://help.adobe.com/fr_FR/premiereelements/using/WS5CDA0F91-60F1-4b79-ABF6-E9E75F498DB2. html#WS2AF26FB5-4C63-4c46-9DB3-7249558F6528
then you would need to explore the use of HDVSplit (firewire connection) and then import of the .m2t split clips from that process in to Premiere Elements 12 (Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets).
    http://strony.aster.pl/paviko/hdvsplit.htm
If both these Canon camera are miniDV camcorders, then you need a firewire connect to the data capture into Premiere Elements Capture Windows.
Do you have access to a computer with a firewire port?
    Or
Does your computer have what is referred to as a PCMCIA slot for use with a firewire card? Have you looked into the possibility? No sure if that will work for you.
