Canon Vixia HF S100. and .MTS files

I just bought a Canon Vixia HF S100. When my SD card was full I copied al the files to an external hard drive. Now I'm trying to edit and see everything with imovie, but the files are .MTS files and imovie can't read it. What can I do???. The software that the camara brings only works on PC not on mac.

Can I try to copy the .mts files back to the sd card and try to download directly from the camera to the new imovie?? Could that work??
No, unfortunately - unless you've kept the whole AVCHD folder structure together. When you're camera records, it puts files into a set of folders with a folder called AVCHD at the top level. If you just copy that and all its subfolders to disk, iMovie can usually deal with it. But if you separate the .mts files, iMovie can't make sense of them any more. Hence using intermediate software.
Your Mac is easily tough enough to handle AVCHD, and so you could upgrade to iMovie 09 OK - but that won't help with the problem you have with this current set of files. Try MPEG Streamclip - it.s free after all, and it will solve the problem.
In future, if you have multiple SD cards, you could simply stick the card in a card reader and have iMovie pull from that - although connecting direct to the camera as you suggest is also fine.

  • Canon Vixia HF S10 and .mts files

I want to know if I can move an AVCHD .mts file from my Canon Vixia HF S10 camera to my hard drive some place, or archive it, and then drag it into FCPX and start using it.
Or do I have to have it on my camera in order to get footage into FCPX?
I hope not. This is the same problem I had with FCP 6.3. If I moved the .mts files onto my HD, the log and transfer feature of FCP wouldn't recognize the footage. That's pretty stupid I think.
    Any thoughts out there?

I have an HFS100 and yes BUT don't just copy the .mts files.  I copied the whole folder structure across not just the .mts files and started editing right away.

What happens if you leave the card plugged into your camera, then plug the camera into your Mac, then open iMovie? Does iMovie "see" the camera and can it then import the movies?

As new owner of iMaC and FCE4 and new in video...but"experience photographer" can't figure out how to get the mts. files from my Canon Vixia HF S100 to FCE4 neither from HD previously stored in folders by Canon original import software made the :-{ provided with camcorder.
iMovie can read and open only the mts.files diretly from SDHC card/camera but not from H drive.I was told by Apple sale rep. if I would go with FCE4 it will support mts.and solve my problem but opposite is true so far, reading this forum doesn't help much...cause only solution offered by many is use of another convert soft, with is questionable with lost of HD quality or not,but why ...why this format doesn't work directly with FCE4 ???

  • Importing .cpi and .mts files into iMovie

A friend provided me hundreds of .cpi and .mts files of footage he shot on a Canon Vixia camcorder. The files are on a DVD disc. How do I import them into iMovie 09?

You may have already resolved this issue, but I found out some great information today from Sony directly.  I was having the same problem, and I was convinced iMovie (i'm using iMovie 09) couldn't import MTS files.  I was wrong iMovie does it very easily.  The problem iMovie has is when you connect your camera, most people click the "video camera" icon so they can see the videos on their camera they wish to import.  What I found is that if you haven't cleared off your video camera in some time, and have over 10 gigs of video on the camera, iMovie has a real hard time, because it has to search the camera and bring up the clips in that lower window pane and often times it will basically time-out, and if you click that camera again the iSight camera launches.
What I did was go thru the clips on my video camera that I could delete (actually watched them on the camera itself), this can be time consuming.  But, once I cleared down the content on my camera under 10 gigs, iMovie saw the information quickly.  Here's another thing I did, that also may help...instead of clicking on that little camcorder icon, use FILE, Import from Camera at the top menu bar instead.  When I did this, it started looking for my attached video camera.  From now on I will clear off my video camera more frequently so that iMovie doesn't bog down looking for possible imporatable videos on the camera.  Recommendation from Sony was keep it under 10 gigs.
    Hope this helps.
    Tim
P.S.  There is no truth to the idea that iMovie does not import MTS files.  My Sony HD Handycam takes all MTS files and iMovie has no problem with them at all.

  • Canon Vixia HF S10 and FCE4 - Log & Transfer

Please help. Have been trying for hours and can not find the answer on line, at least one that works. I have a Canon Vixia HF S10 and every time I attempt to "add clip to queue" I receive a red octagon that states "Error: No Data". I am using FCE4, or trying to at least. Does anyone out there know how to resolve this issue?

    Hi -
Verify that you are using FCE 4.0.1.
Open the Log and Transfer window.
Click on the little gear shaped icon towards the upper middle of the L&T window
    !http://www.spotsbeforeyoureyes.com/L%26TPrefs.jpg!
Select Preferences from the drop down menu.
When the preference window opens, set the AVCHD Plug-In audio format to Plain Stereo.
Now try connecting the camera and see if you can import your files via Log and Transfer.
If there are clips on the camera memory that are recorded with different settings, this can cause problems. The clips need to be all HD clips.
    Hope this helps.

  • I have .MPG and .MTS files on my computer. Can I convert at high quality?

I received .MPG and .MTS files from a friend who shot the video clips on a Sony HDR-CX150, and are now on my computer.
Log and Transfer sadly doesn't work because of the disassembled file structure... Total Bummer.
Will these AVCHD camcorders allow me to throw the footage back on the camera, and THEN perform a log and transfer?
(I don't know if my friend still has the manual)
Side note: I bought Aimersoft Total Video Converter and it seemed to work great, but the quality of the video output is AWFUL. I'm so disappointed.

Try MPEG Streamclip for the MPG files. Lots and Lots of posts explaining its use can be found here on the forum.
Did ClipWrap work on the mts files?
iirc, AVCHD seems to be a one way format. It may be worth reading through the camera manual or going to one a website for the camera to see just to see if going backwards is possible.
    Good luck,

  • I need a definitive answer for using Premiere Pro CS4 to work with .m2ts and .mts files

I have a Canon Vixia HF20 and a Sony HDR-XR350V.  The Canon gives me .MTS files and the Sony produces .M2TS files.  What do I need to do to be able to work with these files in Premiere Pro?  I've searched and gotten that I'll need to purchase a codec.  But are both file types going to be good with one codec?
Also, what are the steps to getting started?  Purchase the codec, load the codec...Will there be any other steps to working with the files in Premiere?
I'm sorry for the basic questions, I'm a photographer!  I've never worked with video before, and this is HARD!
    Thank you for your help,
    Michelle

    Hi, Michelle.
I'm nowhere near the authority on this stuff that many of the others are here, but I have Premiere Pro CS4 and I work directly with AVCHD .mts files from my Panasonic camera. I simply browse to the directory where the .mts files are located and drag them into the project. I didn't need to purchase any additional codec, this is natively supported in Premiere CS4.
I can't speak to m2ts files as I don't have any gear that generates them.
One thing you do need to know, however, and this is important. Whether you're running a Mac or a PC, if you're going to work with high def footage such as AVCHD, you're going to need a fairly high performance computer with sufficient RAM, good performing hard drives and a fast CPU.
I tried this on a PC that was fine for my recording studio (audio), fine for professional software development, but choked and stuttered working with HD material. That's not a problem with the Adobe software, it's just the nature of the beast. HD is extremely demanding stuff, so you need top flight gear to work with it. I bought a higher performance PC and now it runs just fine.
    Hope this helps,
    Chris

  • Need help with Canon Vixia HF S200 and FCP settings looks awful, help!

Shot footage on Canon Vixia HF S200 HD at PF24 looks great in camera. Used Wondershare video converter to go from .MTS file to MPEG4 file. Brought into FCP 6.0.6 now image has a lag time or slightly blocky/mosaic when people or camera moves; the sound is good. What should my sequence settings be? Did I miss a setting in Wondershare? I've never used this camera before and my boss needs me to impress our new school superintendent...help!

Thanks Jerry, that helped alot. Read my latest post please:

  • Premiere 9 and .mts files

Does anyone know if Premiere 9 supports the Canon Vixia .mts files.  Is it necessary to convert before importing and editing?  I've have not been editing in a while.  I still have Elements 2 and my mini dv camera just died.  Looking at one of the Vixia HF models and upgrading to elements 9.  Any suggestions?

If one only has two physical HDD's, I would do a layout such as this:
C:\ OS, programs and Page File (Windows Virtual Memory)
D:\ Assets, Project and Scratch Disks
If I had three HDD's (physical and NOT partitions), then I would split out the Assets and the Projects/Scratch Disks.
The idea is to spread the I/O load over as many physical HDD's, as is possible. In PrPro circles, users spread Exports to another HDD, and also break out Audio from Video and place those on yet another HDD. The more HDD's, the better for total performance.
Good luck, and hope that helps,
    Hunt
PS - though I have one 3x HDD setup and then an 8x HDD setup, I often edit to/from FW-800 HDD's, to migrate my Projects between the laptop and the workstation. In that case, I have all Assets, the Project files and the Scratch Disks on the single external HDD. That is less than ideal for pure performance, but allows the migration, so I live with a bit of a slowdown. This ends up being like a 2 HDD setup, except that the FW-800 external is not as fast as an internal SATA. I live with that setup fine, so if you have only two SATA internals, you will still be ahead of me, with those migrating Projects.

  • CS 5.5 and .mts files

I've got two identical pc's. One pc image was ghosted from the other.
When I try to import some AVCHD .mts file from the ghosted machine, I get the error message. "The File has an unsupported compression type". The original machine imports them ok. Some import fine while others do not, and the files that fails opens fine in other programs such as after effects.
Ive deactivated, uninstalled, cleaned and reinstalled Production premium and get the same results. Adobe says it's activated.
    Any ideas whats causing this?

    shooternz thanks for the reply..
From previous experience, media files contained in directories or folders with "strange syntax" never affected us Mac users. Adobe applications had always been able to opening them regardless. For argument sakes and to prove a point, I'll move some smaller files to the desktop and try re-opening them and enclose a screen grab of the errors encounteres.
    Files stored on RAID Volume:
Same files copied to the desktop:
Just to prove this ain't something thats exclusive to my workstation, I've installed CS5.5 MC on my MacBook Pro.
Opening .mts file on the MacBook Pro with CS 5.5 installed:
Guess what? I still get the same annoying error. Do you folks still think it's a syntax issue??
I believe CS 5.5 doesn't support the compression type for one reason or another and that's soo annoying!!
Seems the only way I'm able to edit these files for the time being is to downgrade to CS5
    FYI:
Those files were shot on a Canon ivis HF11 and PPro CS5 had no troubles opening them, no mater what the syntax.

  • Canon VIXIA HF S20 and FCP interaction

Middle school, 13 year olds create a 2 hour video yearbook every year. We have won the California Student Media Festival 5 of the last 6 years in the yearbook category. We are not experts but do shoot with 4 cameras and use multiclip. It is amazing to see what 13 year olds can do when you raise the bar with FCP. My question is related directly to FCP and its interaction with cameras. We are looking at purchasing 4 new Canon VIXIA HF S20 cameras, using flash memory (we have the Canon Vixia 30 that use tapes now). I have read some on the Vixia HF S20, some on this list, some on the internet in general. We have used canons, have hundreds invested in batteries and are familiar with Canon. We are limited to about 1200 per camera. So, any terrible issues I should be aware of with the Canon Vixia HF S20?

    Hi-
Yes, you are correct. File transfer (and the required conversion from AVCHD to an editable format) can be faster than real time, in fact much faster with a fast computer and raid storage.
When dealing with event/news acquisition and delivery, and every second counts, then file based is the clear winner.
The down side is the reliance and drive space and stability, and lots of both. And the discipline/organization required to run a backup program that is both effective, searchable and ready to be pulled into service at a moments notice,
When a student comes to you and says: "Mr. Peach, the disc drive that holds all our class projects isn't mounting and is making a funny clicking noise!" are you going to be able to swap in a backup drive with the required media on it?
That"s my point about switching to file based acquisition. There's no tape to fall back on. Because we have switched to XDCamEx and Red production, we had to add another crew member we call the "Data Wrangler" whose job it is to make sure all files or organized, accessible and backed up (in our case to several backup locations).
You demonstrate that you are both technologically knowledgeable, and creatively knowledgeable (with your string of awards) and I just wanted to highlight side of the tape to file based transition that is often overlooked.
One more comment - I wouldn't worry about using the technology of the "future". If that were the case, I would recommend you buy a bunch of Kodak Zi8 cameras, edit with iMovie '09 and deliver via You Tube.
Hope this helps and I'm sure you'll make the right decision.

  • Premiere Elements 7 and .MTS Files

I hope someone can help.. I have a new Panasonic SDC-HD1 that shoots High Def .mts files. Adobe Premiere Elements 7.0 recognizes them and I can even drop one onto the SCENE LINE and it shows up. HOWEVER, any other .MTS files I drop onto the scene line, do not show up there.. THEY do show up on the TIME LINE but on different LINES under VIDEO 2 VIDEO 3 VIDEO 4 VIDEO 5 etc etc etc. NOTHING shows up on the scene line. how do I resolve this so the videos show up on the scene line so I can add transitions etc? the program seems to work fine with regular SD video clips and my 720P MP4 files. it just has an issues with the .mts files..
    ANy help would be appreciated...

Paul LS - I have a similar problem but can't find the right project preset or customize an existing project preset. As in Dave Hauss' original post, when I drag files onto the Sceneline they are bunched together in one scene, and when I switch to the Timeline they appear on separate tracks, e.g., Video4 and Audio4, Video5 and Audio5, etc. I have a new Sony DCR-SR220 hard disk drive camcorder that shoots standard definition Widescreen NTSC Video, 720x480 frame size, 16:9 ratio, and the audio is Dolby 5.1. The preset under NTSC | Hard Disk, Flash Memory Camcorder | Widescreen 48kHz only has Stereo audio, not Dolby 5.1. If I try to pick a preset for 5.1 audio, such as NTSC | AVCHD | HD 1080i 30 5.1 channel, then I can't edit the incorrect video settings from HD back to SD. Is there any way to truly customize an existing project preset, or create a new project preset from scratch, to be able to use the Sceneline? Thanks for your help.

  • AME CC 2014 and .mts file import bug?

Had a situation where attempting to open a .mts file by right-clicking and choosing AME 2014 produced an error stating the file couldn't be read, but if I opened AME first and then imported the file, everything worked fine.  Anybody else experience this?

I seem to recall the previously, when I imported a file into AME, no preset was applied until I selected one. Is that incorrect?
Or is the correct workflow to select the preset, then import the file?
As it is now, I have one extra step if I happen to not want the preset that was applied on import, I need to delete it - after adding the preset I do want. Seems an odd way to work to me.

  • IMovie "does not see" videos from my Canon Vixia HF M32 and shuts down. Any ideas?

Lately, I have not been able to download videos as I used to from my Canon Vixia HF M32. My iMovie would not see the camera and would often close unexpectedly. It then gives an incomprehensible error message. I have no idea why this is happening or what to do. I was able to dowload some videos using a pc and a different software. Any clue?
    Thanks

iMovie HD (version 5 and 6) works only with Firewire cameras, DV or HDV.
Footage from other types of cameras can be converted for use. Try VoltaicHD and convert to Apple Intermediate Codec (1080i or 720p) for HD footage or DV for SD (Standard Definition) footage.
If all you want to do is creating a DVD, go for SD footage in the DV format. A DVD is always SD.
