Canon Vixia HF S20 HD Camera and FCE

I am having a problem and can't get the "Log and Transfer" to complete the process of placing the video clip in the queue so I can create a project. When I drag the video clip into the queue it starts to download it then stops and a little red triangle with an exclamation point is displayed where the download icon was. The clip never makes it to the browser window. I hope this makes sense. Is there a setting in the software I need to change?

First, make sure you have update to FCE 4.0.1. Make sure all your clips are HD. If there is a mixture of stills and movie clips on the camera storage, this can cause problems. Remove the stills.
Then -
Open the Log and Transfer window.
Click on the little gear shaped icon towards the upper middle of the L&T window
Select Preferences from the drop down menu.
When the preference window opens, set the AVCHD Plug-In audio format to Plain Stereo.
Now give it a try.

  • Canon VIXIA HF S20 and FCP interaction

Middle school, 13 year olds create a 2 hour video yearbook every year. We have won the California Student Media Festival 5 of the last 6 years in the yearbook category. We are not experts but do shoot with 4 cameras and use multiclip. It is amazing to see what 13 year olds can do when you raise the bar with FCP. My question is related directly to FCP and its interaction with cameras. We are looking at purchasing 4 new Canon VIXIA HF S20 cameras, using flash memory (we have the Canon Vixia 30 that use tapes now). I have read some on the Vixia HF S20, some on this list, some on the internet in general. We have used canons, have hundreds invested in batteries and are familiar with Canon. We are limited to about 1200 per camera. So, any terrible issues I should be aware of with the Canon Vixia HF S20?

    Hi-
Yes, you are correct. File transfer (and the required conversion from AVCHD to an editable format) can be faster than real time, in fact much faster with a fast computer and raid storage.
When dealing with event/news acquisition and delivery, and every second counts, then file based is the clear winner.
The down side is the reliance and drive space and stability, and lots of both. And the discipline/organization required to run a backup program that is both effective, searchable and ready to be pulled into service at a moments notice,
When a student comes to you and says: "Mr. Peach, the disc drive that holds all our class projects isn't mounting and is making a funny clicking noise!" are you going to be able to swap in a backup drive with the required media on it?
That"s my point about switching to file based acquisition. There's no tape to fall back on. Because we have switched to XDCamEx and Red production, we had to add another crew member we call the "Data Wrangler" whose job it is to make sure all files or organized, accessible and backed up (in our case to several backup locations).
You demonstrate that you are both technologically knowledgeable, and creatively knowledgeable (with your string of awards) and I just wanted to highlight side of the tape to file based transition that is often overlooked.
One more comment - I wouldn't worry about using the technology of the "future". If that were the case, I would recommend you buy a bunch of Kodak Zi8 cameras, edit with iMovie '09 and deliver via You Tube.
Hope this helps and I'm sure you'll make the right decision.

  • Canon Vixia HF S20 won't import!

Hi! I just bought a Canon Vixia HF S20 to shoot some video with and I want to edit it with iMovie. Canon says it's possible, but won't tell me HOW. I think I have it all set up right but it's not doing anything. I can't import to iMovie, the only thing that opens when I plug in the camera is an Image Browser thing. I took some photos with it, and apparently I can import those to the computer, but not the video. I'm not sure what to do. It's on the camera's internal memory, not an SD card... I just want to edit my video! lol. Please help... thanks

There are instructions on the Canon site for importing with iMovie and Final Cut Pro.

  • Canon EOS 5D Mark 111 camera and I currently use CS4 Photoshop/Bridge

I just purchased a Canon EOS 5D Mark 111 camera and I use CS$ Photoshop/Bridge. Will I need to upgrade my software to make it work with my camera?
    What do I do?

Adobe currently offers two versions of Photoshop:
CS6 (perpetual license: pay once, own forever: no upgrades)
CC (Cloud version: subscription only: all upgrades are free)
CS6 is superseded software. Adobe is no longer working on it. However CS6 is still being offered for sale for those who want it. However, since CS4 is not eligible for an upgrade to CS6, you're faced with paying full price for CS6.
The CC option requires a monthly fee but it's the current version. It's the next major version after CS6. New and enhanced features are added to CC regularly.
If neither the full priced CS6 nor the Cloud CC version are for you then the free DNG converter is your other option so you can continue using CS4.
You download the free Adobe DNG converter http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/extend.displayTab2.html
Then you must open all 5D Mark III Raw files in the converter and convert to DNG. That adds an extra step to your workflow. Then you can edit the DNGs in CS4.
Quality-wise DNG files = Raw files. Raw files are manufacturer and camera specific. DNGs are open source. Any software which reads DNG files can read them.

  • Having trouble using a Canon Vixia HG20 HD video cam in Adobe Connect Pro. Any suggestions?

Anyway to disable the builtin isight camera and let the Canon Vixia HG20 be the default when it's connected ? I have a Macbook Pro with OS 10.9.4. it doesn't recognize the Canon Vixia HG20. Only the built-in isight camera is used by ACP. I'd really appreciate any suggestion on this very frustrating situation.

It is probably not recognized because the OS doesn't see your camera as a webcam. There is a Windows application to get around this, but I've not heard of one for Mac. If anyone has, please share.

  • Sony's New HDD Cameras and FCE (or iMovie)

Help! I just bought a new Sony camera that does not use tapes. It is the DCR-SR40. They files are saved as Quicktime, but I cannot use them in FCE. Sony support says that they are not compatible with Mac. I can buy an editing program from Pixela, for $100, but then I can't use FCE. Any help in getting the files to work? Any third party software to convert the files? Sony support said I could use an analog capture card, but again, another expense, and I lose the digital. Grr!

Hey, thanks a bunch! I got Streamclip to work finally. I did have to d/l the quicktime add. I tried it without, to no avail. This twenty dollar fix is a lot better than the hundred dollar one.
I tried to email you, but the forum wouldn't give me your address. Is there any difference to the export choices? Export to DV is the best choice? It worked with one dvd I just made. Since you have this camera, am I supposed to format the HDD drive before I use it? I did not, as I was in a hurry to film. I just grabbed it out of the box and shot. I seem to remember that I had to do that as well when I bought a still Sony camera a few years ago. Same problem, had to format to get the disk to read.
Again, thanks a great deal for your help. I appreciate all here, both of you guys who helped me answer this problem.

  • Offloading Canon Vixia HF20 Flash Memory Camera

Gurus, need your best suggestion for a colleague who has a nice new consumer cam. This little Canon will shoot pretty good 1920 x 1080 as AVC/H.264. What is the best workflow to get the video product into Final Cut Express or even iMovie using a MacBook Pro via the USB 2.0 on the cam?
Canon has some software that converts the conversion to something that can be converted, etc.

I connected the cam with usb, opened final cut and clicked log and transfer, takes a few sec's and all your clips are in a list, you have to name then 1 by 1 (don't think there are any shortcuts), add in's and out's to your clips (unless you want to import the whole clip) and then click add to queue.
To add multiple clips at once select them either using shift or command and click the "add selection to queue" button

  • I just bought a Canon PowerShot A2400 IS Digital Camera and its not showing up in OS X Lion when connect by USB

Can someone please help with this. Thanks. I have tried to find drivers but none are availble on the Canon site.

Do you have iPhoto installed? If you do, you can set it to recognize the camera. iPhoto / Preferences / General
This is what it looks like in OS 10.8.2. The key is the line "Connecting camera opens:" There may be other Applications listed as well, depending on what is installed.
To my knowledge this works with any camera.

  • JVC GR-HD1U Camera and FCE?

Please help! I've spent days on this! I have read all the discussions and tried all suggestions. Please tell me exactly how to get my new to me JVC GR-HD1U Camera to work with Final Cut Express. I have Quicktime Pro, MPEG Streamclip, firewiresdk26 and I still cannot capture a thing. What setting in Easy Setup should I use? If you say "Trash Preferences", please explain this. I am not sure what is meant by this. If I need to capture with Quicktime please explain how, I tried and cannot get to work. I just want to edit.

    http://www.fcpbook.com/Misc1.html
from what I tell this camera shoots HDV at 720p30, so that's the setting you should use. Apple Intermediate Codec 720p30.
Trash the preferences. Disconnect any other devices except the keyboard and mouse. Connect the camera via FireWire. Turn it on in VCR mode set to output HDV. Make sure that's set correctly in whatever menu it has to be set in. Launch the application. Set the preset. Does the application recognize the camera is connected? If no, check to see if system profiler recognizes the camera is connected. If not, try a different cable or an Apple store. If yes, try log and capture and see what happens.

  • Canon Vixia HV 40 HDV mode and HD 24f mode help

    Hi everyone,
I just did a 2-camera shoot-- problem is, I shot in HDV mode, and my partner shot in HD24f.
I am new to HD--how can I cut footage from both modes and not have them look different?
Are there capture issues between the two modes? Thanks for your help!

I'm not familiar with the cameras, but a quick look says both are HDV and likely either 30 or 24 fps.
You should be able to Log and Capture using the appropriate HDV codec. Depending on the performance of your capture machine, you can either transcode on-the-fly to the ProRes codec of your choice or capture as HDV and subsequently transcode to ProRes codec of your choice.

  • Canon Vixia HFS100 Cine Mode 24fps and Final Cut Express

I'm not sure if FCE supports this mode. Anyone using this setup could let me know. I don't see it in easy setup. Thanks

FCE does not support 24fps material.

  • Camera settings & FCE settings

I shoot with a Canon XHA1 I am trying to determine the most compatible settings between the camera and FCE for creating the highest quality DVD.
The camera setting options are: Frame rates of 60i, 30F, 24F; comp out of 480i or 1080i/480i.
My other camera is a Canon EOS 5D MK2 it's options are; 1920x1080 or 640x480.
My shooting subjects are wildlife. I also include many still shots in my dvd's, some with the Ken Burns effect. What resolution and format is best for the pictures? The EOS 5D will shoot most still formats including RAW at up to 21 mega pixels. What might be the suggested work flow for the stills?
FCE has numerous options, most of which I know nothing about, in the File/Easy Setup menu. For HDV I would assume that only the last three are applicable but if that is so which one?
Again my end result is to export to dvd. All suggestions are appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

I use the same camera, did they ever tell you what to set it at for wildlife? 60i 30f 24f? I * which ones I have it set at but still can't figure out to put it at 60i or 24F? I want the closest to 1080P but am still confused .
