Canon Vixia HF10, 100, 20, 200

Ok Allan,
Best value? I have reviewed the 10 to great reviews and its in my price range. Whats the comparison of the other 3 models compared to the 10? I will definately be buying a Canon, but which one?

The difference between the 10 and 100 is built-in memory.  Not worth the costs with SDHC cards dropping rapidly in price.
Similarly, the only difference between the HF20 and HF200 is the built-in memory.
90% certain the HF10/100 are discontinued.  I have an HF100 and love it.  The HF200 is its replacement.
Or are you talking about the HF S10/S100?  That is a new model, and if I recall correctly, had a physically larger sensor than the HF100 (and the HF200, which has a smaller sensor than the HF100), which means the S100 should be the best choice in terms of low-light performance.

  • How do you Backup Canon VIXIA HF10 files for FCP?

    Hi,
I just bought a Canon VIXIA HF10, wonderful!!
I'm trying to import the captured/recorded files into FCP..i found that's a problem..
When i drag and drop all the files and folder on my desktop and when i deleted 1 of the file in the backup folder...Final Cut Pro unable to browse the whole folder for preview and even doesn't launch in the Log and Transfer window
How to solve this problem? how to delete the clips that i don't want and keep posible to launch in FCP? Deleted it on Camera before backup to computer? not really a good idea...
    HF10 users....helps...
    Thanks and Appreciate!

I have HF100. Do you mean make a backup of footage you take before editing? Or after editing? For footage before editing, I make an exact copy of the SDHC card from my camera and store that on an external harddrive. That is in the avchd codec (with file and directory structures intact). Therefore 8GB card = 8GB on Hard Drive. With the HF10 I believe it is possible to copy the files on Camera's Hard Drive to Camera's SDHC. Then you could follow my workflow. You will also find that you can point Log and Transfer to the stored copy on the drive and it will transcode to ProRes or AIC as you determine. The important thing to remember is to maintain the exact file and directory structure as the original.

  • Canon Vixia HF10 and importing into FCP

Can anyone tell me how to import from the Canon Vixia HF10's internal memory into FCP? It seems that there is only a USB connector on the camera and FCP only supports Firewire. Any suggestions?

    Dear Jerry,
I have the same issue. Just got the camera. I can copy the "private" folder which contains all the information which I believe is based on .MTS type files.
I was hoping that I could somehow just load these clips in directly as I used to use a canon miniDV which required me to play the entire clips.
I have mpegstreamclip but am not too familiar. Is there any other way other than having to convert each and every clip?
Thanks so much for any advice you can give me.

  • Ingest from AVCHD Canon VIXIA HF10

After quite a bit of research I purchased a Canon VIXIA HF10 with the hope that FCE would ingest footage from the camera. However, FCE does not recognize the camera. I've also tried to capture once the program is open but it tells me it is "unable to initialize video deck". Any recommendations?

Is this the case with any AVCHD camcorder?
In general, yes. Some cameras shoot in a format called "AVCHD Lite" which need conversion for use in FCE. (BTW, FCE will transcode your AVCHD media into the Apple Intermediate Codec during ingestion which will greatly increase file size. Hope you have lots of free space!)

  • Canon Vixia HF 100

I updated my Mac Mini 1.66Ghz Intel Core Duo, 2GB RAM, to Leopard 10.5.6 with ilife 09.
I was told this should allow my Canon Vixia HF 100 to connect to imovie via USB. I'm still unable to transfer footage, only still pictures. I know other people are getting files from this camera to imovie, what am I doing wrong?

    I am concerned about your problem as well. I also have the HF100 camcorder. reading the minimum specs for iMovie 09 (http://www.apple.com/ilife/systemrequirements.html) it lists;
Intel-based Mac, Power Mac G5 (dual 2.0GHz or faster), or iMac G5 (1.9GHz or faster)
Your mini with a 1.66Ghz processor could be part of the problem, is you mini a core dual processor?
Does anybody know if the Core 2 dual 2.0Ghz mini is the only mini that will run iMovie 09 using the AVCHD video.

  • Canon vixia hf10 problem...

i am using the canon vixia hf10 camera. i upload the vids to premiere fine and whn they are on the right side and just under the "organize" spot they look fine. i drag them to the left into the timeline and they look horrible. they look all jumbled. They are all mixed up with a bunch of thick horizantal bars and i cant fix it. I have tried to check the boxes next to reverse field dominance and interlace consecutive frames, and it doesnt work. any ideas?

This sounds like a mismatch between your source footage, and your Project Preset.
If you do not know the full specs. of your source footage, you can use G-Spot, the free utility to get ALL of the details.
Please tell us the full specs. of your source footage. Next, tell us the exact specs., chosen when you did New Project. There is very likely a mismatch there, and it can easily be rectified.
    Good luck,

Some videos says imported and the others say ERROR. After its done it'll say some videos didn't go through and asked if I would like to archive it.
I need these videos to edit !

    Hello,
I am having the exact same issue here with a Canon VIXIA HFS200 and a MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo (with gobbs of RAM and Hard drive space). Did you ever find a solution to your issue? Anyone? Anyone?

  • Imovie '11 won't recognize Canon Vixia HF10

I have been trying forever to get my Computer to Recognize my Vixia. I was a little disappointed because supposidly the canon is supposed to be very compatible. Every thread I read says to connect the cam into a power source and connect it via USB and Imovie should automatically recognize it. It does not.
I should let you know I am trying to get clips off of it's hard drive.
I have tried import, Movies, selecting the camera and all those files are greyed out.
Any Ideas? It will not pop up automatically I don't know what to do.
    Thanks
    Emily

Sometimes the order in which you launch iMovie and connect the camera can make a difference. I always recommend going the extra step of having the camera attached to the wall, connected to the computer, powered on, then put into playback mode. THEN, start the computer up...
Launch iMovie once you see the desktop appear then go to the File Menu > Import from Camera...
Best practice for connecting the camera is usually to have it powered up and playing back before you even launch iMovie at the least.

  • Canon Vixia HFS 100

Working with Final Cut Pro 6.0.6 and am not sure how to get the 24p footage into the software. Everytime I bring it in, it reads as 29.97fps. Any thoughts as to why it does this? What's the workflow to get the 24p footage in there?

    Hi -
The HFS 100 records 24p as 60i, which is 29,97.
From the Canon USA spec sheet for the camera:

    Hope this helps,

  • Anyone Use the Canon Vixia HF10 With iMovie?

Settled on this one after considering a Sony HDD model.
    Anyone have a view?

I don't own a camcorder, but I've read that iMovie 6 requires a camcorder with a firewire connection; yours apparently has USB? So that could be part of the problem; hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be able to address the question of the SDHC cards this camcorder uses. You may be able to get the files off the cards onto your desktop and then go from there. I own a Canon digital camera and have no problems getting the movie files on to the desktop and drag and drop them into iMovie.

  • Import from memory based Canon Vixia HF10

Hi all...been using my Canon HD camera with iMovie with relatively few problems.
What strikes me as odd is when I click "Import from Camera" it never recognizes the camera. Sometimes it imports, sometimes it doesn't or at least doesn't notify me it is importing. Anyone know anything else about this?

Im curious, how did you fix this issue? Previously iMovie 08 found my HF100 and I could import my clips, but now it just wont recognize the camera. Camera is on, powered, and everything is correct. I got a disk on my desktop named NO NAME which contains all the clips, but iMovie does not recognize.

  • Canon Vixia HF10 .MOV pixelation issue

    My goodness...
I used FCP to import the .mts files from the HF10. When I open the converted .mov file in the FCP Viewer (before pulling anything into my actual timeline), it looks wonderful (as wonderful as a consumer HD cam can look.)
However, when I drag the file into the FCP timeline everything looks like they are in 8-bit Super Mario world (over exaggerating of course.) Seriously, all edges are squares.
After I finish the edit, I export using Compressor, burn it with DVDSP and the final product when watched on anything keeps the square appearance.
Is there something I am missing between the import of the raw clip to the viewer that looks great, and for some reason goes 8-bit when dragged to the canvas?
    Thank you for your time.

I tried something, changing the sequence settings to match the type of media, and in canvas and during edit things look fine, that is my mistake. However after going through Comp and DVDSP the DVD product is still pixilated. I guess it has something to do with the type of compression, I'd just like to know how to keep it from doing it, as the initial stuff looks good.
    Thanks.

  • How to read .MTS from Canon VIXIA HF10

Hi all, I'm trying to import some .MTS footage to FCP 6. I know I have to use Log and Transfer. I did this before but now it is not working anymore!. No idea what's going on. I already updated my software to the latest upgrade, but still the same window appears everytime I try to import. It says:
"STREAM" (my folder) contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media.
    Could anyone explain or help?
    Thanks in advance

HI, I had a similar problem although somewhat different. As an editor I received 3 .mts files of HD footage. I didn't have the camera model or make and the files were copied off the media card and then deleted.
Fortunately I was told by Peter Bradley that you Toast can read the files. So I dropped the .mts files into the video tab of Toast 9 and they all appeared. I was able to view the footage and am now exporting it to a disk image to see that I get. It may turn them into SD, I don't know yet, but since we are editing it in SD, that would be fine with me.
I will investigate this some more. The DVD that Toast creates will be less than adequate for many purposes since the footage will be processed a great deal in order to use it, but at least I am able to use it.
    Any feedback would be great.
BTW, MPEG Streamclip, which I love and will be used to extract an editable QT from the .VOB that Toast is creating, was unable to read the .mts files. I also tried opening the files in iMovie08 with no success.
    peace, Rusty

  • CS3 or CS4 -Import/Edit HD video from memory card Canon Vixia HFS100

Can someone 'jumpstart' or direct me to good tutorial(s) for the following:
Video recording with Canon Vixia HFS 100 camera is full HD 1080, 60i frame rate, AVCHD specs, onto a SDHC card.
I have CS3, getting ready to install upgrade to CS4.  Most project files created are for NSTC standard TV broadcast.
Answer to specific questions appreciated as well as additional information or resources.
What preset is best to use for project files?
Do you have to install the Pixela imagemixer to recognize for video import from the memory card?

Unfortunately, you have posted into the Premiere forum. This is an older series of programs, prior to the introduction of the Premiere Pro line, with PrPro 1.0.
Now, for AVCHD material, CS4.1 offers full native support for this format with most of its variations. One DOES need a beefy computer to process this footage, as it is very heavily CPU-dependent.
I'll bet that Curt, or Jeff, will move your post to the PrPro sub-forum, so look for it there. You will get many more responses in that forum.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Canon vixia hf s20

I had a canon vixia hf 100 and it worked fine with fce and imovie 09. now I have a canon vixia hf s20 and it will not be recognized by anything but iphoto. any help? fce and imovie 09 are all up to date.

    Hi-
Yes, you are correct. File transfer (and the required conversion from AVCHD to an editable format) can be faster than real time, in fact much faster with a fast computer and raid storage.
When dealing with event/news acquisition and delivery, and every second counts, then file based is the clear winner.
The down side is the reliance and drive space and stability, and lots of both. And the discipline/organization required to run a backup program that is both effective, searchable and ready to be pulled into service at a moments notice,
When a student comes to you and says: "Mr. Peach, the disc drive that holds all our class projects isn't mounting and is making a funny clicking noise!" are you going to be able to swap in a backup drive with the required media on it?
That"s my point about switching to file based acquisition. There's no tape to fall back on. Because we have switched to XDCamEx and Red production, we had to add another crew member we call the "Data Wrangler" whose job it is to make sure all files or organized, accessible and backed up (in our case to several backup locations).
You demonstrate that you are both technologically knowledgeable, and creatively knowledgeable (with your string of awards) and I just wanted to highlight side of the tape to file based transition that is often overlooked.
One more comment - I wouldn't worry about using the technology of the "future". If that were the case, I would recommend you buy a bunch of Kodak Zi8 cameras, edit with iMovie '09 and deliver via You Tube.
Hope this helps and I'm sure you'll make the right decision.
