Canon Vixia HF11 not recognized

I have a MacBook Pro 17, with Final Cut Express 4 (updated to latest version: 4.0.1); when I connect my Canon Vixia HF11 (with USB cable), the camcorder is not recognized.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Alfred

I also have a H11 (for 2 weeks, recorded a play creating two 50+ minute clips.
iMovie '09 recognizes the camera, shows thumbnails of the 2 clips, and acts like it wants to import them. After 3 hours, I get a message that there was an error. I've tried this several ways with the same result, and gave up.
I bought FCE 4.0.1, and get NO invitation to import. The camcorder shows up on the desktop as 2 icons, one a USB drive, the other as a generic "white" drive. When I go to IMPORT, only the USB drive shows up. Within it is a AVCHD folder with 3 folders:
1.AVCHDTN (with 2 files-THUMB.TDT, and THUMB.TID...both grayed out.)
2.BDMV( backup, Clipinf,Playlist, Stream folders)...looks like maybe demos
3.CANON (4 files: 000000.MPL, CINDX.TMP, INDEX.BDM, THUMB.TID...all grayed out.)
Everything is NOT available. The camera is in video playback mode. power adapter in use. At this very minute I'm reconfirming that iMovie recognizes it, whereas FCE does NOT have the HF11 on it's supported camera list. But, I'm most perplexed that ANYONE on this thread got any clips imported at all! How is this possible? Is there just no real Apple support for this camera yet? I have an opportunity to return this camera, but it must be soon, and I need this play OUT of the camera. Is there a PC solution for this problem? I'm in a crunch! I'd appreciate any suggestions.

  • Panasonic HDC-SD100 vs. Canon Vixia HF11

My apologies as I know this is an FCP forum, but I figured some might have experience with these cameras, and also I'm curious of each cameras' AVCHD integration with FCP.
I'm debating between the Panasonic HDC-SD100 vs. Canon Vixia HF11. The use would be for recreation and as a B camera. I love my DVX-100 and was so excited about the HDC-SD100 because it has a small form factor, can record to SD cards in 24p, and has an audio input jack. I cannot count the number of times I wish I had a small 24p camera that I could take with me when it wasn't convenient to take my DVX. I really feel this is the wave of the future.
I like Canon's still camera line, but I still have a slight distaste of their camcorders cause of the XL1, which had beautiful image quality but IMHO crappy handling and interface. Camcorderinfo.com reviewed both cameras and leans on the HF11 because of the better image quality. I'm going to a store to checkout both cameras, but any opinions/insights would be most appreciated!
    Best,
    Alexander

    AVCHD integration?
It requires 6.0.4 and an Intel Mac.
Transcodes are about RT to prores. A rumored next version of FCP will facilitate native AVCHD editing.
    My issues?
Canon uses a single CMOS rolling shutter. It also records at 24mbps, the highest AVCHD recording data rate.
Panny uses a 3 1/6 inch CMOS imagers, but at 17 mpbs.
I'd like to look at each, because we use a HPX170 and need a B-Roll.
Costco has the HF11 at sub $1k. You can return it.

  • Canon GL2 is not recognized by Final Cut Express

I am trying to capture from my Canon GL2. I hook up the fire wire but neither I-Movie or Final Cut Express seem to recognize the connection.
    Any Suggestions?

    Hi
    My general list on this.
    *NO CAMERA or A/D-box*
    Cable
    • Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable *very often the problem maker*.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
    • Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
    A/D-box
    • Is the dip-switches set right ?
    • Set to same standard as recorded/editing eg NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps
    • Try resetting it
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    • FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.
    • Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
    • White MacBooks - don't
    • MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
    else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
    • Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
    • Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
    • If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    • Screen Saver - OFF
    • Energy Saver - OFF
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie’08 (7.1.?), 09 or 11 ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
*Other ways to import Your miniDV tape*
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE Mac OS Extended formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After uninstalling Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

Maybe your problems is solved in the meantime, but for all others this might help as I had the same problem, also have the Sony HDR-HC7, but the 7e (Europe, PAL). I found this link today and it works perfectly
    //support.sony-europe.com/tutorials/dime/videotransfer/vtransfer.aspx site=odwenGB&sec=DVH&m=HDR-HC7E
What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

  • Canon Powershot SD400 not recognized by iphoto

I am trying to import pics into iphoto, just like i have done over the past 4 months, however recently my iphoto stopped recognizing the camera. I am connecting via usb, and am sire it is not the connection because it was recognized with the same cord on another mac I have. if anyone knows what could be the problem I would appreciate it.

    Merry Christmas Emma,
I don't have the answer to your iPhoto problem but you may be able to get the photos off of the card using Image Capture and then importing them into iPhoto.

  • Canon Rebel XS not recognized as device anymore

    Hi Everyone,
I am new to the forum. I am at my wits end trying to solve this delimma, but maybe joining this forum will be something positive to come out of this whole experience.
I purchased the Rebel XS package with two standard lenses from Sams about 3-4 years ago. I own Adobe Photoshop Elements and both it and the Canon EOS uploader open when I connect via usb to my pc.
So recently, I stay up late in the very cold weather (in AL) and take some shots of Jupiter using my tripod. I saw online to take pic of Jupiter I should set camera to RAW. I did so, even tho I don't think elements 5 can handle raw images. I forgot to put my camera in a baggy and let it gradually warm up inside since it was so cold outdoors- but I've been outdoors in the cold before.
I go to upload what i think might be a pretty cool shot of Jupiter and I can't do it. Then I notice I have used up almost 100% of my harddrive. Here is where I think I may have messed up and need advice on how to fix this. To make room on my harddrive, I cut and pasted the entire My Pictures folder to an external harddrive device.
So I've since made such a mess of things, that I copied my pics and documents to various external storage. I have a pc that is capable of installing XP or Windows 7. I had been using XP bc I was a contractor who needed my software I'd purchased to work and it wouldn't run on 7. Out of work, I decided to upgrade to Windows 7. I put all the required disks that came with PC and erased my harddrive. I reinstalled the Canon Software and Photoshop Elements 5. I still can't get pc to recognize my camera. I think somewhere along the way I clicked something that made it think I wanted to go wireless. I can't figure out how to undo that. I am also suspicious that me doing that could have caused the issue this time bc I had some sort of error message that mentioned wireless. I do not recall the exact message.
My husband says we are too broke to call the GeekSquad. Boohoo. It's maddening bc I have pictures of items I wish to sell on ebay and can't do so. I also have a babybook to make. Any help would be so appreciated!!
I'm glad to have found this forum. I have other questions for later as well- after I figure out this issue.
    Thanks,
    Michele

No I have not yet tried a new battery other than the three that came with the camera, two of those are Chinese knockoffs. My girlfriend got the camera back from McBain camera...apparently they took it apart and said there was nothing wrong with it...go figure. They said pop the battery out and put it back in when it does it.... as all canon xs's act like that. umm no they don't becuase the second used one I bought for a girlfriend which is the same exact camera works great. Not to mentioned firmware 1.07 is supposed to fix the issues with the camera, which my camera is running. They mentioned about cold weather and the camera not operating well in cooler temps. Yes I'm aware of that, however I was using the camera at 0c which is right around that threshold ...and again my new used camera works fine. Do.you guys think it could be a bad clock battery? I've heard the camera won't boot up if there is no clock.battery...so a failing ond may cause issues as well...no?

    Or Fireworks!
    What do I do!?
I went to manufacture site. No Drivers for OSX!
Any ideas? Not even sure where to find it in Preference Panel!
    Thanks!

I'm glad you mentioned the Canon D1250U USB is a scanner.
    "...What do I do!?"
Get another scanner, or see if you can use a program like VueScan or other third party scanning software.

  • Canon lide 210 not recognized in yosemite. Latest driver downloaded

Since upgrading from Mavericks to Yosemite (10.10.1) I have lost capability with my Canon Lide 210 scanner and Jam XT bluetooth wireless speaker.
I have downloaded and installed the latest Canon driver to no avail. Any ideas? Both were working great before I upgraded to Yosemite.

The scanner driver file is installed in HD > Library > Image Capture > TWAIN Data Sources. Here you will see the LiDE210.ds file. This package file contains information used by the scanner and removing the scanner entry in Print & Scan does not remove this file. You could trash this file (make sure you remove the entry from Print & Scan first) and then run the v17.7.1 scanner driver installer again.
If MP Navigator still fails it could actually be this application rather than the scanner driver at fault. Note that Image Capture uses a different driver called an ICA. So to test that the TWAIN scanner driver is okay you would need a TWAIN compatible application. And one such application is VueScan. Install this and see if you can scan without any error. If you can then it indicates the issue is with MP Navigator. If VueScan also fails then you do have a scanner driver issue.

  • Canon 8400F scanner not recognized by 10.5.7 on G5 Powermac

I've tried using Canon's driver uninstaller and re-installed the latest driver several times. However, when I try to import into Photoshop Elements 6, the latest version of Gimp, or the latest version of Canoscan toolbox, I get the following message:
The necessary file could be missing or damaged, or some settings are incorrect.
    Reinstall the scanner driver.
    Scanner driver will be closed.
After I click the 'ok' button, I get:
Could not complete the import command because there is no scanner installed.
    Thanks for your help.

...When I follow the directions of the previous reply I do not find ScanGear in the twain folder.
The TWAIN Data Sources folder should contain your CanoScan 5000F.ds file, not ScanGear. The ds file will be automatically installed into this location by the driver installer.
I dragged it into the folder just to see what would happen, and the sub folder is black in colour with the letters exec, which is like a windows.exe file.
This is not the correct procedure so it is not surprising that it didn't work correctly.
ScanGear will not self install but maybe it needs another programme to open,
Yes. ScanGear is the preview window that you see after you select to scan using the Canon scanner. So you do need some other scanning application to initiate the image capture.
After spending so much time looking on forums, I am somewhat surprised to see so many Mac users who have problems with Canon equipment. I think they are very much lacking in support for older equipment, unlike HP who supplied all the necessary info to install my old printer, and it all worked perfectly first time.
Having used Canon for a number of years, I would argue this point. A lot of the time the problem is caused the person using the Mac, not the device. Also, there are plenty of people in this forum with HP equipment that are having problems, so I think you will find that none of the vendors do it perfectly, including Apple, otherwise we wouldn't have these forums...
I read on one forum that ScanGear will not work with OSX.
I can assure you it works. My previous CS3200F worked fine for years until I dropped it and now my 5600F is working nicely with Leopard.

  • Canon iP4000R suddenly not recognized!!

OK I came across this thread while trying to find what was wrong with my ip4000r.
The symptoms were EXACTLY the same, but it turned out the cause was totally different:
1: The root cause was that wireless (8002.11) coverage in my house was reduced rather a lot causing corruption and eventually timeouts/failures on the printer (also bad images produce ... seems the error checking is weak.)
2: Moving to a wried interface did NOT fix the problem
3: Turns out there is a little, all important, pulldown on the printer config
(set the Priority Interface: WIRED LAN)
    Background:
I now have 2 addresses set up for my canon printer. I have a DNS set to give them names (if you don't have a local DNS you will need to type the IP address)
    cannon.home (wireless) wcannon.home (wired)
If you open a firefox session with:
    http://cannon.home or http://wcannon.home (e.g. you might type http://192.168.0.2)
You get up a page which shows signal strength the canon is seeing (about 30% in my case)
If you click on advanced, you get a larger page, right at the bottom is a single pull down "Priority Interface"
When you change this, the web session may hang, e.g. if you came in on the wireless address and set it to wired ... you may lose your session ... simply reconnected to wired address .
I had assumed the pull down was a 'server side' (i.e. printer) setting which
decides what to do if work arrives in USB + wired + wireless at the same time ... seems it is not.
Now I've changed this setting (so using 100mb LAN) it all works much better & faster.
When I originally installed the printer I did not have wired ethernet in that location.
BTW. I mainly use a Linux box ... it tested this on the children's Windowbox ...... but since the Mac BB had advice to offer, I felt I should contribute this back. (I bought a 17" i-mac for my mother in law ... with the newer version of this printer ... damm those chipped ink cartridges

  • Canon HFS10 (AVCHD) not recognized

Have just upgraded from excellent Canon HG10 (HDD) to this model (has flash memory). Thought I could just go to Get Media and it would recognise. Oh if Life were that simple. Camcorder not recognised, nor in Windows Ex (running XP + SP3). Canon Support suggested was MS problem (heaven help us) not theirs. Eventually used NEW USB lead that came with camcorder and now at least PC recognised it. Why should new lead work while old lead doesn't? However PE7 still won't recognise via AVCHD so have to navigate via "PC folders" to My Computer where HFS10 is listed. Hope this saves someone else a few wasted hours. But hope Adobe crack the more direct method.

Oh, it would be great if camera mfgrs. did work more closely with software companies. The problem is that the camera folk are very busy developing the latest, greatest CODEC's. By the time that they have settled on a final, they are off working on the next one, and tweaking their CODEC's in the process. Companies, like Adobe, do not get to see things, until the release of the new model. Then, they have to decide on certain things:
1.) will we be able to revise the code to allow fill Import and editing?
2.) can we get the CODEC from Canon (in this example)?
3.) will there be a large enough user-base to support our writing/re-writing of code?
A perfect example was PrPro CS4. When it was introduced, there was no AVCHD support, though the then current version of PrE (7, IIRC) did have it. Originally, Adobe decided that it would be more likely used in PrE, than PrPro. It was not until about CS4.1, before AVCHD was added, along with many "fixes." Now, PrPro is on a much longer introduction cycle, than PrE. I would guess that PrE 9 will offer even more support. Will it cover every variation, and newer CODEC's, like Panasonic's new Intra-Frame CODEC? We'll have to wait and see. If PrE 8 does get an update to fix/change other things, it is highly likely that CODEC's will be added, as Adobe has now had a bit more time. With the normal Autumn release of a major upgrade for PrE, it is usually not until the upgrade, that additions are made.
It is the same with OS and OS versions. To develop the programs, Adobe needs some lead time, and more than a beta, or RC, to develop to. Now that Win7 is released, in 2 flavors, it is likely that some form of 64-bit version of PrE will emerge, next, or the release after that.
The exact same thing happens with the various camera RAW schemes. Adobe gets these upon their release, and writes them into the ARC (Adobe RAW converter). There are usually updates at about 6 mos. and they usually add several cameras. Now, processing camera RAW stills is a lot different than editing to a new CODEC - a lot different. Though I shoot Nikons, my wife has some Canons. Her latest had a new Canon RAW format. It just got added to ARC, and I noticed that the newest replacement camera has changed things again. Heck, her's is only about 9 mos. old (having been released about 6 mos. before she bought), and it just made it into the latest ARC. Now, Adobe must add the new one, for the next release. In the meantime, users of that newer camera are stuck only using the Canon software, until ARC can be updated. It is a never-ending process.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • FCE Log and Transfer with Canon Vixia HF11

I've recently upgraded FCE.  Before the upgrade I had no problems with log and transfer.  I have changed absolutely nothing on my camera or computer other than the upgrade.  Now when I try to log and transfer the files are in the window but I get a red icon that indicates they won't download.  Are there simple fixes here?  I don't understand most of the terminology used on these sites.  I just know that it worked before I upgraded and doesn't work now.  Thanks

  • HT2948 Canon HV20 not recognized by Mac Book Pro w/Retina Display

My Canon HV20 is not recognized by my MacBook Pro Retina Display using IMovie.  Mac Customer support referred me to Canon for resolution; however, the the Mac site indicates Final Cut Pro supports the HV20.
I'm willing to purchase Final Cut Pro, but will it work?  Mac customer support indicated if it is not recognized by IMovie, it probably won't be recognized by Final Cut Pro.

You need to be connecting from the camera to the computer via Firewire (iLink), not USB.
There are anecdotal reports of problems with Firewire 4 pin to Firewire 9 pin (FW400 to FW800) cable adaptors. You might try switching cables to see if you get better results -  and it appears that a dedicated cable with a 4 pin connector on one end and a 9 pin connector on the other works best.

  • IMovie 08 not recognizing Canon Vixia HF100

I have had my canon Vixia hf100 for over a year and purchased iLife 08 (with iMovie 08) last year and had no problems with uploading my videos at first.
However, I am no longer able transfer my videos from my camcorder into imovie 08. It will not recognize the camera, and any time I try to do a manual transfer of the files, it tells me they are not movie files. Why would imovie STOP recognizing my camera that it used to recognize? I'm wondering if something changed with one of my software updates that changed imovie and somehow made it incompatible. I would rather not purchase imovie 09. Any insight would be appreciated.

Sorry I didnt mean to offend with simplicity, but unless you do the right (silly as it may seem) sequence it doesn't recognize the Canon! One thing done out of order and you must start over again! I did leave one step out, sorry! When the camera is turned on, you will get a camera screen to select the "play mode". Use the joystick on LCD display panel to select PC mode and depress select button.
iMovie '08 then detects and lets you download all clips from the camera.
Tip: You must use the Movie folder in your user "parental guidance" ok'd user area. No other folder works!
And I do have all apple software updates on that computer. If this still doesn't solve your problem, I purchased Leopard by DVD from Apple and upgraded Tiger. However my new Leopard native computer did not have iMovie '08, still don't know why! So my success has been on the computer using the Leopard DVD upgrade! Perhaps the system upgrade and the native Leopard misses the boat, which would cause your continued problem.
    Sincerely trying to help!

  • IMovie '11 on Mountain Lion does not see Canon Vixia HG20, Lion does

I have 2 Canon Vixia HG20s and an HG21 that I had previously used with iMovie. When I plug the cameras into any of my Mountain Lion systems, iMovie does not see the camera to import from. On my MacBook it only sees the EyeSight camera.
I know I had imported from these cameras when I was still running Lion. In fact, I still have one Mini running Lion Server. I installed iMovie onto it and plugged in one the HG20s. It immediately recognized it and offered to import the videos. I unplugged it and immediately moved it to the MacBook with Mountain Lion, and it's not recognized.
The one thing I'm not sure I have tried is on another Mini that was upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion. I will be trying that tonight.
What can be done to allow me to import my videos, something I USED TO be able to do?
    Thanks!

Wow. I looked at some of your other posts and found a few hints that I tried. I deleted all the com.apple.iMovieApp.plist and .cache files/folders in various locations and tried again. Now iMovie sees my camera!
Hope you figure out your issue!

Hello and thanks for the feedback.
There are two scanner drivers available for many of the new models of Canon AIOs. There is the ICA driver and the Canon scanner driver.
During my tests on clean builds of 10.6.x I found that my Canon AIOs were able to print and scan via wireless by simply installing the Canon update provided by Apple. This update consisted of the then latest printer driver for many models of Canon AIO and inkjet and the ICA driver. Canon's scanner driver was not included as part of this download from Apple.
The ICA driver is installed in HD > Library > Image Capture > Devices and the package is called Canon IJScanner1. Later versions of the ICA driver also installed another package, Canon IJScanner2. These ICA drivers provide a minimal amount of scanning selections and only appear to work with Image Capture and Preview. Other applications like Canon's own MP Navigator and Adobe Acrobat Pro will not scan with just the ICA driver installed. The Canon scanner driver for the respective model is required.
From what you have said and from my own testing I propose that the original CD did not contain the ICA driver but the Canon scanner driver for the MX870. And with only this driver installed you were able to scan using Image Capture via the wireless. I don't recall ever testing a 10.6 build where only the Canon scanner driver was installed and not the ICA driver (it is present by default on 10.6 but only has older models of Canon AIO's - your MX870 is not there). Had I tested this I believe that I would have been able to scan via wireless using Image Capture.
I also propose that once you installed the Canon v2.4.1 update, which contains a version of the ICA driver package that is also available from Canon web sites, then Image Capture stopped using the Canon MX870 scanner driver and used the ICA driver instead, thus stopping you from wireless scanning.
Right now I am using a new build of 10.6.6 on my MBPro. So that I could print to my MP990 at home and an MG6150 at work I simply installed the v2.4.1 update and have printer and scanner queues in Print & Fax for both. I have not installed scanner drivers for either device and at home with my MP990 Image Capture does not show any device being available, while Preview does show the MP990 once I select 'Import from Scanner > Include Networked Devices'. Also, Acrobat Pro 9 does not show my MP990 being available.
And with regards to the v2.4.1 update, the drivers included are provided by Canon to Apple, just as the other vendor drivers are provided to Apple, to make life easier for us Mac users. The drivers are available individually and get downloaded and installed automatically when the respective model is connected to the Mac and no local driver is present. As for the package including all these individual vendor drivers, this would be created by Apple.
