Canon Vixia HF20 and "Progressive" frame rates: how do you edit them in PE7, or any PE version?

My owner's manual is splayed before me: I have these options with my  Canon HF20 Camcorder:
I can record video in: 60i (standard) - I guess they mean "default"
I can also record in PF30 and PF24.
It says this:
PF30: 30 frames per second, progressive. Use this frame rate to easily edit your recordings, for example, to post them on the Web.
(I do post my videos on the web: indeed that is all I do with them. The Web is a free storage closet that we get as a bonus, by paying for monthly Internet charges.)
My manual also says this:
PF24: 24 frames per second. progressive. (That is what it says - progressive.) Using this frame rate will give you recordings a cinematic look. When combined with the Cine Mode recording program, the cinematic look will be enhanced.
I have noticed no interesting differences. And editing these .mts files is a pain, no matter what format one uses.
I am wondering if anyone is in a similar situation, regarding AVCHD and editing problems using any version of PE.
I constantly have trouble with artifacts - ghosting - combing - all manner of problems, which is enhanced by using the available HD. That is, in 1920x1080, the drop-frame system creates highly compressed, problematic files.
These are hard to edit, but can be done decently using a kind of sleight of hand. I often downgrade 1920x1080 to 720p in editing, just to get the jumpy quality to look decent. This usually works.
I wonder what others do. I really miss 8mm. ... sylvester

The 60i setting should work best with PRE with the Full HD 1080i preset.
As for performance that can be highly dependant on your system and how it is set up. By default most PC's startup with a whole load of cr*p provided by your supplier - all of which can eat into your performance. Anti-Virus software (especially McAfee) can cripple PRE. • Editing in 60i or 30p? for canon Hf 10 and multiple frame rates?

My canon hf 10 shoots at 60i, 30p, and 24p. I would like to incorporate all the features of my camera into my projects, like the 24 frame movie mode for certain clips in my video, shoot at 30p for others, and 60i for fast moving when we are in a car. Now I understand that my camera does 30p and 24p in a wrapper, but if I were to edit a project timeline, which setting would be the correct to use If I wanted to use all the different footage??? Should I just use 60i? and just remove pulldown for 24p footage? Someone said that progressive is better then interlaced for DVD and internet viewing, or should I edit at 30p? 24p is of course not a reasonable option so I left it out. So I am left with either 60i or 30p...
The project will be put on DVD and on the internet. I was told 30p is better then 60i for this, but if my 30p and 24p are just 60i in a wrapper, should I go and EDIT IN THE TIMELINE with 60i since thats the format that its "really" coming from? Then, when its all done, it will be better?

The 60i setting should work best with PRE with the Full HD 1080i preset.

  • I have a handycam DCR-SR45 and windows 8.1 how do you make them compatible?

The drivers needed to connect your Sony camcorder to a computer and transfer files are already included in the operating system. You may install PlayMemories Home on your computer and use it to transfer, view and organize pictures and videos taken by your camcorder.
Please click on the following link for more options on how to transfer pictures or movies to the Microsoft Windows 8 / 8.1 operating system.

    Hi skinnaird,
    Welcome to the Sony Community!
When you say that the camera is not recognized by PMH, does the same thing happen with the computer? Do you see the camera as a connected device on your My Computer folder?
If you are not seeing the camcorder as a connected device, I suggest checking the USB connection to bothe devices first. It could be loose or not connected properly. Also choose the right option when connecting the USB, select the media that you want to import (HDD or Memory card).  We recommend using the supplied USB cable for transfer to avoid any issues.
If the computer recognizes the connection but PMH does not, initialize the program. Make sure you are running the latest version of PlayMemories Home.

  • ICal and Address Book fonts--how do you display them in their own font?

I tried printing address labels from Mac's Address Book. It was pretty intuitive and straight forward. However, when I was prepping to print, I had the chance to change the fonts. The list of fonts was not presented with each font name in the font itself (does this make sense?).
When I use Excel or Word and want to change fonts from Arial to Times New Roman, I go to the font chooser, and Times New Roman is displayed in Times New Roman font. If I want to be creative and pick something new, it's easy to see how it will appear, because the name of the font is displayed in the font its describing.
Is there a setting I need to adjust in order to make this work in Address Book and/or iCal?
    Thanks!
    Terel

On one hand they make Mail look stark, like the interior of a Porsche 911, gray, gray, gray, (boring)  and on the other hand they make iCal look like some 3rd party creation where they paid a graphic designer 250.00 to come up with a cool look.  Cheesy!
Probably designed by some unemployed Windows XP graphic 'artist.'
As to Address Book.  Why complicate something that is already working just fine.

  • HT1202 I get how you can transfer purchases from a device to computer but what about the hundreds of songs on my iPad that were from CDs and non purchased? How can you move them from iPAd to computer if it wants to erase and sync?

I am needing to transfer ALL content, not just purchased, to new computer and it wants to erase and sync because device is associated with another Library. Please help!

What was the source to get that content onto the iPad?
There has to be a middleman to get from CD to iPad - use
backup of that to get content to new computer.

  • Importing and burning mts files from my Canon Vixia HF20

I have the HD camcorder Canon Vixia HF20 (and love it btw). It creates .mts files. I downloaded the software that came with the camcorder for Macs, but it does absolutely nothing for me (as far as I can tell - maybe I am doing something wrong).
I downloaded VLC so I can watch the .mts files and it works great. However, I am completely stuck on how to a) burn them, b) transfer them to a file format that allows me to burn them.
I have a new Mac desktop and am a novice at using it (I've had a laptop for a while before the desktop). Thus, I don't know how to use iMovie. Everything I read says imovie will be able to burn the files. However, when I open iMovie, choose "import," it doesn't allow me to import anything b/c they are in the .mts file format. It's like they are "blacked out" and incapable of being uploaded from my computer's hard drive to it.
So, I'll quit rambling. I've researched this ad nauseum, so any help on how to burn these files would be so greatly appreciated. I do not have File Cut Pro. Thanks!

iMovie versions 7, 8 and 9 can import that file format but only from the camera.
Once you move the files off the camera you'll have to jump through some hoops to convert them.

  • Shooting settings for optimal viewing in FCE (Canon Vixia HF20)

Hi, I own the Canon Vixia HF20 and I've read in various places to shoot/record in the Cinema Mode setting if you're looking to make movie-esque videos. Additionally, I found this last night in the camcorder user manual "Combine the Cinema Mode recording program with the 24 fps progressive frame rate (PF24) to get the enhanced effect of the 24p Cinema Mode.
I have absolutely no idea what the difference is between 60i, PF30 or PF24. I've already shot a lot of stuff on the 60i setting. Is there a huge difference between 60i vs. PF24. Drawbacks? Recommendations? Ultimately, I'm trying to record on the best settings for optimal compatibility with FCE.
I'm a huge novice as far the tech specs so any help is appreciated. Thanks and sorry for the long winded post.

Thanks for the info Wally. As mine is mainly for DVD I will stick with interlaced.
When I first got my Canon HV20 I tested the 50i and PF25 modes and couldn't detect any difference.
Incidentally the PF25/30 modes do not produce 25 or 30 full frames. They really shoot 50 or 60 fields exactly like interlaced footage except the 2 fields in each frame are identical, giving a similar effect to a single identical field that you would get in true progressive.

  • Importing files from Canon Vixia HF20 without power adaptor.

    Hi There,
I recorded videos on my Canon Vixia HF20 and no longer have the power adaptor for the camera. Everytime I go to import the videos into Final Cut Express, the camera says 'connect to power adaptor'. Is there a way to get the files from the camera without purchasing a power adaptor?
    Thanks for the help!
    Mitch

I have an external battery charger that requires me to take the battery out of the camera. Something like this: http://www.canadatekk.com/battery-charger/canon/3811.htm
After searching and searching, I did just end up ordering one off Amazon. Hopefully it gets here before Christmas!
That being said, is there even a way to import videos without the power adaptor?!

  • Canon Vixia HF20

I just bought a Canon Vixia HF20 and cannot get PE7 to recognize the camera in order to download files.  First I tried to use the software that comes with the camera to download the files and then import into PE7, but the files become choppy.  Then I tried to download the free trial of PE8 to see if that software worked, but somehow I get Photoshop when I download (did it twice).
So, 1) is there a way to directly import files from the Canon Vixia HF20 into PE7?
    2) If not, can I do this using PE8?  I don't mind paying to upgrade if that will work, I just wanted to use the trial version to make sure it would work prior to doing so.
    Any help is much appreciated.

    Baker,
I suspect that (as you observed) you may need to use the software that came with the camera in order to transfer the files from the camera to your computer hard drive and then import the files to Elements.  Now the choppiness of playback might be caused by the resources of your computer.
However, I think that your questions are actually Premiere Elements questions: if they are then it would be better for you to post them in the Premiere Elements forum at
    http://forums.adobe.com/community/premiere/premiere_elements
That is a better place for discussing the computer resources required to process the AVCHD format of your VIXIA HF20.

  • Will Canon Vixia HF20 work with Final Cut Pro 5?

    Hello,
Just bought a new Canon vixia HF20, and heard that it doesn't work with Final Cut Pro 5, only six. Is this true?
Also? Whats the first step in importing from this camera if it does work?

iMovie saves the footage inside its project file.
Right click the icon, choose "Show Package Contents".
Open the Contents folder -the footage is in the Media subfolder.
Can you bring it into FCP?
    Dunno. Give it a try.
If that does not work iMovie has various export options.

  • Log and Transfer Crash FCP 6.06, from Canon Vixia HF20

I am having a strange problem in logging and transferring from FCP 6.06. I have been logging and transferring from my Canon Vixia HF20 without any problems for monthes. Then I have been granted access to a Sony HXR-NX5U NXCAM from work, I logged and Transferred from the flash memory unit HXR-FMU128, without any problems. But ever since I logged and Transfered from the sony flash unit, in attempting to log an transfer from my Canon Vixia has caused FCP to crash every single time. I then log and transfer again from the Sony Flash unit without any problems, after having dealt with the Canon transfer crashes.
Currently log and transfer from Song Flash unit always works, from Canon Vixia never works in FCO 6.06.....boooOOO!
Anyone else experience a problem like this?

    Hi Eugene
Seems like maybe your FCP's preferences have taken a turn for the worse ... at least I haven't heard of this being a widespread issue so I would recommend you start by using a free app like Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager to make a backup copy of your current FCP user preferences, then use the same Preference Manager app to "trash" those existing prefs. Now restart FCP and see if the problem still persists .. hopefully not. If the problem is still there then you can use Preference Manager (again) to restore your previous prefs from the backup copy you made ... and you are back where you started.
    Post back

  • Canon Vixia HF20 file import

    Hi,
I just got a Canon Vixia HF20 AVCHD camcorder, but didn't think to see if it was compatible with Mac.
Does anyone have this camcorder and know how to get the video files transferred into the mac from it? I can mount the drive on my mac, but cannot find any video to import, although I know there is some on there? I have Final Cut Studio which I am going to try to use this with-

Jerry...so wonderful to see you are still delivering such helpful advice after so many years. I haven't visited this forum for years but remember how much I did when I first got started--and definitely needed and used your guidance.
What brings me back is that I got the canon HF 20 and used the importing method you mentioned below. But the files are ridiculously huge. I have cleared most of the 250 GB of space on my computer just to import and burn a DVD of a 1:18 piece.
Would I be able to get an external drive (I'm using a new mac pro 15" laptop) to import the files into and edit with, so I don't take up all my space on my computer? Or is there another method you might be able to suggest to import, edit and export these files?
    Happy 4th!
    Jake

  • Canon Vixia camcorder and Imovie09 anyone have any issues?

Hi I have a 2009 2.66 ghz Quad Core Mac Pro. I plan on purchasing a high definition camcorder, I was very interested in the Canon Vixia series but was concerned because I read that people had issues with their canon Vixia camcorder and Imovie. Should I be concerned? Anyone have any issues with the Canon VIXIA HFS100, HF200, or the HF20 and Imovie09 on their 2009 intel Mac Pro? I don't want to spend 750-900 dollars on a camcorder if I'm going to have issues importing the videos into my mac. Any info is greatly appreciated

    Sheryl Kingstone wrote:
Other issues were around the 1080p is not really 1080p. meaning it says it records 30p, but it imports it at 60i. Don't really understand why.
Today I tried 30p on my Canon HF-S100 for the first time. If I understand correctly it's still saving the video in 60i format -- e.g. all of the odd scan lines in one field, then all of the even scan lines in the next field. The visible difference is that you don't see the interleaving when you view the results in iMovie or Final Cut Pro.
With 30p it's as if the camera captures an entire frame at once, then saves it as two interleaved 60i fields. By contrast, when the camera is recording 60i it captures one field (every other scan line) and records that, then captures and records the other field separately.
In other words, in 60i mode, the subject may move between the recording of the first field and the recording of the 2nd field, resulting in interleave "jaggies". In 30p mode the subject doesn't move between the recording of the fields, since both were captured at the same time.
I wish I could insert some pictures to better explain myself
