Canon Vixia HFS10 and FCP

Hello,
I have a client that shoots with 2 Canon Vixia HFS10 camcorders.
In the past I have converted files with the Xilisoft Video converter Ultimate which was a hit and miss sort of thing.
I also borrowed one of the cameras and used log and transfer which worked much better although slowly.
This go round I need to start capturing while they are still shooting so I was wondering if anyone knows if I can use FCP log and transfer with the original cards and a card reader as opposed to the camera itself? I am using an Intel Mac Book Pro.
Thanks in advance.
especially if you say yes it will work

And in mirroring the above post - I might recommend not only transferring the entire contents to a drive, but making a redundancy as a backup. Then, once you confirm the master and the backup, you can hand the card back to the camera operator to be wiped.

  • Cannot import video file from Canon Vixia hfs10 to imovie'11.

Hi this is my first post on this site.
I am having trouble trying to import video files from Canon Vixia hfs10 to imovie'11. The computer does not even recognize this camcorder. When I do a PC connection, iphoto comes up, but all it tells me to import are the pictures that I have taken.
No matter what I do, I cannot find the folder for my camcorder in the device section in the finder.
When I try to import it on imovie, I only get an option for facetime camera and not my vixia.
    Please help!

  • Canon Vixia camcorder and Imovie09 anyone have any issues?

Hi I have a 2009 2.66 ghz Quad Core Mac Pro. I plan on purchasing a high definition camcorder, I was very interested in the Canon Vixia series but was concerned because I read that people had issues with their canon Vixia camcorder and Imovie. Should I be concerned? Anyone have any issues with the Canon VIXIA HFS100, HF200, or the HF20 and Imovie09 on their 2009 intel Mac Pro? I don't want to spend 750-900 dollars on a camcorder if I'm going to have issues importing the videos into my mac. Any info is greatly appreciated

Other issues were around the 1080p is not really 1080p. meaning it says it records 30p, but it imports it at 60i. Don't really understand why.
Today I tried 30p on my Canon HF-S100 for the first time. If I understand correctly it's still saving the video in 60i format -- e.g. all of the odd scan lines in one field, then all of the even scan lines in the next field. The visible difference is that you don't see the interleaving when you view the results in iMovie or Final Cut Pro.
With 30p it's as if the camera captures an entire frame at once, then saves it as two interleaved 60i fields. By contrast, when the camera is recording 60i it captures one field (every other scan line) and records that, then captures and records the other field separately.
In other words, in 60i mode, the subject may move between the recording of the first field and the recording of the 2nd field, resulting in interleave "jaggies". In 30p mode the subject doesn't move between the recording of the fields, since both were captured at the same time.
I wish I could insert some pictures to better explain myself

  • Canon Vixia HG21 and Premiere CS3

We just purchased a Canon Vixia HG21 and are unable to import the footage into Premiere CS3. Files are of .m2ts extension. Is Premiere CS3 not able to read these? Is CS4 better or able to? What are our options?

we have upgraded to CS4 and the program still can't import the m2ts files this camera generates
I assume that this means that you have the full-paid version of CS4. Is that correct? The reason that I ask is because the trial version will not handle anything MPEG.
Now, there have been reports of full-paid versions of CS4 reverting to the trial version, with the updating to CS4.2. If this has happened, again, you will not have support for anything MPEG. One test would be to find an MP3, or some other MPEG Asset, and try to Import that. If you get a failure, you likely have a trial version now. See Below:
The "cure" is to de-Activate your version and THEN uninstall. Run the Adobe Clean Script CS4 3 - 4 times, rebooting between each. Next step is to install the CS4 version, Activate again and then apply all updates to CS4.2. We do not know what causes a few updates to change the installation to the trial, but it happens too often. The above steps, in that order, work for all.
Good luck, and let us know if that helps.

  • Canon Vixia HF10 and importing into FCP

Can anyone tell me how to import from the Canon Vixia HF10's internal memory into FCP? It seems that there is only a USB connector on the camera and FCP only supports Firewire. Any suggestions?

    Dear Jerry,
I have the same issue. Just got the camera. I can copy the "private" folder which contains all the information which I believe is based on .MTS type files.
I was hoping that I could somehow just load these clips in directly as I used to use a canon miniDV which required me to play the entire clips.
I have mpegstreamclip but am not too familiar. Is there any other way other than having to convert each and every clip?
Thanks so much for any advice you can give me.

  • Canon XL2 24p and FCP

    Hi,
    I've shot a project in 24p, 2:3:3;2 mode on the Canon XL2.
Does anyone have any info on the pros and cons of editing in 24p versus 29.97?
My final output is most likely for broadcast/DVD, but perhaps there will be a film transfer.
Do you lose some of that film "look" of 24p if it's edited in 29.97?
What is the best setting to Capture into FCP? I've had an "issue" with a couple of tapes coming in un-synched, though everything was Captured at the same setting.
    Thanks,
    Rex

You'd have to recapture I think removing the advanced pulldown removal preset in FCP...However it won't look any different in the end because it has to play back at 29.97 no matter what on a TV (from tape)... Cinema Tools can remove 2323 from 29.97, but not 2332...
The positive side of 24fps video is that the file sizes are smaller than 30 fps video (fewer frames). so in theory, you could make a higher bit rate MPEG-2 file in the end for DVD's if your finished movie is longish... or if you are printing back to film, then 24fps media is really what you want to work with. However... in any case the movie will look the same as 29.97 because that is what you shot actually, with a pulldown added to spread 24 individual frames over the 29.97 that your camera shoots.
Modify the device control setting in the Audio/Video settings to FireWire Basic... it's in the pulldown menu on the first tab of the A/V settings in the FCP menu.

  • CANON HG21 HD and FCP

Hello, I have a new camera Canon HG21 HD which record on hard disk. I shall want to know if it is possible to copy directly these files to work with FCP without crossing by the capture. Pixela image mixer for pc seem to do that, but for the mac, wich software shall we use ?
    thank

No native support of AVCHD. Actually very little that works on PCs as well.
You can transcode using the FCP log and transfer feature.
Or transcode to any codec on your computer using Toast 9.
    Also Voltaic HD and VideoPierHD.

  • Canon Vixia HF20 and "Progressive" frame rates: how do you edit them in PE7, or any PE version?

My owner's manual is splayed before me: I have these options with my  Canon HF20 Camcorder:
I can record video in: 60i (standard) - I guess they mean "default"
I can also record in PF30 and PF24.
    It says this:
PF30: 30 frames per second, progressive. Use this frame rate to easily edit your recordings, for example, to post them on the Web.
(I do post my videos on the web: indeed that is all I do with them. The Web is a free storage closet that we get as a bonus, by paying for monthly Internet charges.)
    My manual also says this:
PF24: 24 frames per second. progressive. (That is what it says - progressive.) Using this frame rate will give you recordings a cinematic look. When combined with the Cine Mode recording program, the cinematic look will be enhanced.
I have noticed no interesting differences. And editing these .mts files is a pain, no matter what format one uses.
I am wondering if anyone is in a similar situation, regarding AVCHD and editing problems using any version of PE.
I constantly have trouble with artifacts - ghosting - combing - all manner of problems, which is enhanced by using the available HD. That is, in 1920x1080, the drop-frame system creates highly compressed, problematic files.
These are hard to edit, but can be done decently using a kind of sleight of hand. I often downgrade 1920x1080 to 720p in editing, just to get the jumpy quality to look decent. This usually works.
I wonder what others do. I really miss 8mm. ... sylvester

The 60i setting should work best with PRE with the Full HD 1080i preset.
As for performance that can be highly dependant on your system and how it is set up. By default most PC's startup with a whole load of cr*p provided by your supplier - all of which can eat into your performance. Anti-Virus software (especially McAfee) can cripple PRE. Try working through the steps in this article: PrE Hanging, or Crashing - Some Tips. If that doesn't solve your issue then this article lists the things we need to know about your system and clips - Got a Problem? How to Get Started

  • Log and Transfer Crash FCP 6.06, from Canon Vixia HF20

I am having a strange problem in logging and transferring from FCP 6.06. I have been logging and transferring from my Canon Vixia HF20 without any problems for monthes. Then I have been granted access to a Sony HXR-NX5U NXCAM from work, I logged and Transferred from the flash memory unit HXR-FMU128, without any problems. But ever since I logged and Transfered from the sony flash unit, in attempting to log an transfer from my Canon Vixia has caused FCP to crash every single time. I then log and transfer again from the Sony Flash unit without any problems, after having dealt with the Canon transfer crashes.
Currently log and transfer from Song Flash unit always works, from Canon Vixia never works in FCO 6.06.....boooOOO!
Anyone else experience a problem like this?

    Hi Eugene
Seems like maybe your FCP's preferences have taken a turn for the worse ... at least I haven't heard of this being a widespread issue so I would recommend you start by using a free app like Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager to make a backup copy of your current FCP user preferences, then use the same Preference Manager app to "trash" those existing prefs. Now restart FCP and see if the problem still persists .. hopefully not. If the problem is still there then you can use Preference Manager (again) to restore your previous prefs from the backup copy you made ... and you are back where you started.

  • Importing and burning mts files from my Canon Vixia HF20

I have the HD camcorder Canon Vixia HF20 (and love it btw). It creates .mts files. I downloaded the software that came with the camcorder for Macs, but it does absolutely nothing for me (as far as I can tell - maybe I am doing something wrong).
I downloaded VLC so I can watch the .mts files and it works great. However, I am completely stuck on how to a) burn them, b) transfer them to a file format that allows me to burn them.
I have a new Mac desktop and am a novice at using it (I've had a laptop for a while before the desktop). Thus, I don't know how to use iMovie. Everything I read says imovie will be able to burn the files. However, when I open iMovie, choose "import," it doesn't allow me to import anything b/c they are in the .mts file format. It's like they are "blacked out" and incapable of being uploaded from my computer's hard drive to it.
So, I'll quit rambling. I've researched this ad nauseum, so any help on how to burn these files would be so greatly appreciated. I do not have File Cut Pro. Thanks!

iMovie versions 7, 8 and 9 can import that file format but only from the camera.
Once you move the files off the camera you'll have to jump through some hoops to convert them.

  • Imovie 11 and Canon Vixia R400

I am considering purchasing the Canon Vixia R400 and want to be able to use imovie 11. I understand that AVCHD does not play well with imovie unless it's transcoded but this camcorder can also record in MP4 files. Would this mean that imovie will be able to handel without needing to transcode the file first?

I would recommend that you get a 4 pin to 9 pin firewire cable. You can get a good price at www.monoprice.com. Many people have reported trouble with those adapters.
Also, make sure camera is plugged into wall power. Battery power will not work for this.

  • Canon Vixia HG20 okay for Final Cut editing?

Anybody know if it's a problem to take footage off a Canon Vixia HG20 and start editing in Final Cut? I normally import my minidv footage through firewire on another camera but was interested in this particular camera. Not sure how it'll change my workflow so I figured I'd check with the pros!

That's an AVCHD camera so you need an Intel Mac and Final Cut Pro 6.0.5. You would then use FCP's Log & Transfer function to transcode to Pro Res or Apple Intermediate Codec.
To use this format on a G5, you would have to get a copy of Voltaic.
Transcoding would take around 20 hours for each hour of video.

  • Will Canon Vixia HF20 work with Final Cut Pro 5?

    Hello,
Just bought a new Canon vixia HF20, and heard that it doesn't work with Final Cut Pro 5, only six. Is this true?
Also? Whats the first step in importing from this camera if it does work?

iMovie saves the footage inside its project file.
Right click the icon, choose "Show Package Contents".
Open the Contents folder -the footage is in the Media subfolder.
Can you bring it into FCP?
    Dunno. Give it a try.
If that does not work iMovie has various export options.

  • MacBook Pro won't recognize videos on my Canon Vixia HG20

I have a Canon Vixia HG20 and had no trouble copying video to my Mac laptop in the past. Now I have a MacBook Pro and when I connect the camera with a USB cable, the videos are grayed out and the computer doesn't recognize them. The videos play fine on the camera itself. Also, the still photos show up on the computer and transfer easily. I've seen older posts & sites (2008, 2009) that are related to this issue, but I'm not sure they apply anymore. Any new help for 2012 out there? Please explain in layman's terms, as I am not very technically literate. Thanks!

Go to the Canon Drivers and Software page here and download the March and April software updates for OSX Lion. This should help in transferring video.
There is also a firmware update for the camera here.
