Canon Vixia HG20 w/ Mac... Help!

i just got my camera, a canon vixia HG20 and i am having problems getting the video onto my macbook. it comes with a disk with ImageMixer and that doesn't work because it is apparently windows only. the other disc has CameraWindow and ImageBrowser which both say no camera found.
so i have given up with them, but how do i get the video off the camera and into iMove or QuickTime, anyway? when i plug in the camera and go to it in finder it has weird files such as MOVIEOBJ.BDM and 00000.CPI
please help me figure how to get video from a canon camcorder onto a macbook

Hello,
Your question that you posted is exactly what I am having a problem with. Can you share with me what you did, because again, it is EXACTLY what I am having trouble with.
Thank you very much.

  • MacBook Pro won't recognize videos on my Canon Vixia HG20

I have a Canon Vixia HG20 and had no trouble copying video to my Mac laptop in the past. Now I have a MacBook Pro and when I connect the camera with a USB cable, the videos are grayed out and the computer doesn't recognize them. The videos play fine on the camera itself. Also, the still photos show up on the computer and transfer easily. I've seen older posts & sites (2008, 2009) that are related to this issue, but I'm not sure they apply anymore. Any new help for 2012 out there? Please explain in layman's terms, as I am not very technically literate. Thanks!

Go to the Canon Drivers and Software page here and download the March and April software updates for OSX Lion. This should help in transferring video.
There is also a firmware update for the camera here.

  • Having trouble using a Canon Vixia HG20 HD video cam in Adobe Connect Pro. Any suggestions?

Anyway to disable the builtin isight camera and let the Canon Vixia HG20 be the default when it's connected ? I have a Macbook Pro with OS 10.9.4. it doesn't recognize the Canon Vixia HG20. Only the built-in isight camera is used by ACP. I'd really appreciate any suggestion on this very frustrating situation.

It is probably not recognized because the OS doesn't see your camera as a webcam. There is a Windows application to get around this, but I've not heard of one for Mac. If anyone has, please share.

  • STRANGE: two Canon Vixia Hg20 cameras, only one is recognized by FCP

I have two Canon Vixia HG20 cameras and 2 iMac 3.06 GHz Intel dual core computers. Both have Final Cut Pro 6.0.5 (latest update for that version).
The mystery: Final Cut Pro used to recognize both of the cameras, but now it only recognizes one. I've tried both cameras on both computers with the same USB cable, and I get teh same result every time. I try to log and transfer, but it can only detect the one camera. Both iMacs show the camera as an icon on the desktop and I can see there are files on the drive. I can see ".cpi" and ".mts" files on the drive. I've tried restarting the computer, restarting the cameras, waiting 15 minutes. I go through the exact same process with the same model camera but get two different results.
Obviously, something must have happened to the second camera. Perhaps it wasn't disconnected properly? Perhaps files were pulled off, or maybe something placed on it? Perhaps it is recording in a different format?

I was going to suggest you copy the contents of both of the cards to the Mac and see if you can import from there. But, umm, I don't even know if that's possible.
I'd start by formatting both cards, twice, in the camera. Open the cameras and identify each card, camera 1 and camera 2. Put a piece of masking tape on each camera and write a 1 and 2 on the tape. Go through each camera's menus carefully setting and matching each of the shooting parameters.
Make a card that say CAMERA 1 and shoot two minutes of it. Do the same with camera 2.
Now you have a binary system that can yield repeatable and trackable results.

  • Canon Vixia HG20 okay for Final Cut editing?

Anybody know if it's a problem to take footage off a Canon Vixia HG20 and start editing in Final Cut? I normally import my minidv footage through firewire on another camera but was interested in this particular camera. Not sure how it'll change my workflow so I figured I'd check with the pros!

That's an AVCHD camera so you need an Intel Mac and Final Cut Pro 6.0.5. You would then use FCP's Log & Transfer function to transcode to Pro Res or Apple Intermediate Codec.
To use this format on a G5, you would have to get a copy of Voltaic.
Transcoding would take around 20 hours for each hour of video.

  • IMovie '11 on Mountain Lion does not see Canon Vixia HG20, Lion does

I have 2 Canon Vixia HG20s and an HG21 that I had previously used with iMovie. When I plug the cameras into any of my Mountain Lion systems, iMovie does not see the camera to import from. On my MacBook it only sees the EyeSight camera.
I know I had imported from these cameras when I was still running Lion. In fact, I still have one Mini running Lion Server. I installed iMovie onto it and plugged in one the HG20s. It immediately recognized it and offered to import the videos. I unplugged it and immediately moved it to the MacBook with Mountain Lion, and it's not recognized.
The one thing I'm not sure I have tried is on another Mini that was upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion. I will be trying that tonight.
What can be done to allow me to import my videos, something I USED TO be able to do?
    Thanks!

Wow. I looked at some of your other posts and found a few hints that I tried. I deleted all the com.apple.iMovieApp.plist and .cache files/folders in various locations and tried again. Now iMovie sees my camera!
Hope you figure out your issue!

  • Problem capturing video from Canon Vixia hg20 to Adobe Elements ,

    Hey ,
So I am having alot of difficulty capturing video to Adobe Elements 2.0 from my Canon Vixia hg20 video camera . I am trying to capture using the USB 2.0 port , which I do have the drivers installed for.. If anyone else has had a similar problem and a solution , I would love to hear about it , .
Basically the camera is not even detecting in the software , not really sure what to do??
    thanks John

    From Cannon Web
Issue: What folder are the videos stored in on the camcorder?
Solution: List of the directory and file structure of AVCHD camcorders
For users who wish to "drag and drop" the video files created by the camcorder the videos can be located by drilling down thru the following folders.
Double click on the removeable disc drive icon to display the root folder of the drive.
Double click on the [AVCHD] folder
Double click on the [BDMV] folder.
Double click on the [STREAM] folder. The video files are located in this folder with a .mts file extension.
    - Depending on the software you are using the file extension may need to be renamed to .m2ts to be useable in your playback or editing software.

  • Canon Vixia, Log & Transfer, .MTS help!

I have a Canon Vixia. I used to be able to use Log and Transfer to ingest the footage into my Final Cut Pro 7, but all of a sudden it doesn't work. My macbook doesn't even recognize the MTS files, they are greyed out when I use the "Add Volume" button. Did I do something to the camera? I tried various solutions on the apple forums and other sources like copying everything on the SD card and putting it on my desktop and pointing Log & Transfer to the Root folder, but nothing has worked thus far. Any ideas? Any help would be much appreciated, thank you in advance!!

If you have made no changes to your camera, and Log and Transfer has suddenly stopped working - the first step is to trash your FCP preferences.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1846?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
The easy way to do that is to download Preference Manager (free) from Digital Rebellion:
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
Preference Manger will let you archive your existing preferences if you should want to return to them.
If you trash your preferences, restart FCP and have the same problem, post back.
Also, when looking in your manual, see if your camera has a feature that will correct/fix the directory structure on the camera storage card.

  • Canon Vixia HG20 - movies are loaded, but too large for DVD - help?

Hi, my HD camera uploads the movies just fine to iMovie 08. My problem now is, because they're in HD they are ginormous files. I can't even get 4 minutes of video onto one DVD!
Is there a magic way to convert or compress these HD files into regular DVD format? Do I have to get a new software to make this happen? I'm googling like crazy and just getting more and more confused.
Or should I just make everything a smaller file, for viewing on an ipod or youtube and put it all on a DVD?
I'm really frustrated and confused! Thank you in advance for your help!

    Hi
4 minutes to much - then You got problems.
    a. iDVD doesn't care about GBs at all only duration of movie + menu
    b. iDVD is very hard disk hungry - and only eats the internal/boot drive
so free space on other hard disks doesn't count
The internal/boot drive should have 25Gb or more free space.
    c. No version of iDVD do HD-video - only SD (old time TV resolution)
There are no iDVD HD version out here yet.
alt. is to use Roxio Toast™ which if bougt as Pro incl. BR-component can burn to
a Blue-Ray burner and Disk (AND Small porojects on reg. DVDs - about 20-30 minutes)
BUT - These BR-disks or DVD (BR-coded) Can't be played on DVD-players or Macs
only on BR-players eg PlayStation 3
If it still don't work - see my list
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
    iDVD pref file resides.
    Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
    and is named. com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Program miss-match. iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match. iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match. iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
    • Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Last resort. from Craig. Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.
If You do a re-install be sure to get rid of all iDVD old parts AND then EMPTY the Trash-basket !
    iDVD updated ?
    Apple Codec updated ?
Start a New Clean project - or delete project assets
No of Colors - must be set to millions

  • FCP Studio not recognizing my new canon vixia HG21...Help!?

Hey everyone, so I have no idea what's going wrong here, but supposedly you plug the HG21 in, via a USB, which aggravates me, and click on log and transfer and viola! You should see your footage which you can select to capture. But when I plug it in, I see the USB images for my canon on the desk top, but nothing in FCP. Should I have done something before? What am I missing? please help!

First of all, you need an Intel mac to work with avchd natively.
I found this thread doing a search here for 'G5 + avchd'...give it a look
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8325194#8325194
Or search this forum for 'avchd', while you're waiting for others to chime in.

  • Log & Transfer problem with Canon Vixia

I have a Canon Vixia HG20 and I am trying to use the log and transfer. But it is not working.
I select my clip and select add to queue but it never adds. I get a red exclamation sign and it says clip idle.
I've used both of my macs, an iMac with Tiger and a Macbook with Leopard. I have Final Cut Express 4.
I have tried setting the audio to plain stereo, didn't help
I can get iMovie to transfer the clips no problem.
Anyone know what I need to do?

I am using the Canon HG10 with CE 4.0.1 and seem to be having the same problem. I am new to FCE 4.
I have tried a few of the settings on Easy Setup however I do not seem to be having any joy.
If anybody could shed some light onto this I would be so grateful!
    Thanks

  • TS2646 Settings to record in on Canon HD Vixia HG20 for easy migration into iMovee'11 v.9.0.9?  It would be most helpful to list what the best possible settings are.

So, what are the best settings to record in using Canon HD Vixia HG20 for easy migration into iMovee'11 v.9.0.9?
It would be most helpful to list what the best possible settings are.
    frame rate?
    format?  FXP?

I suggest filming in 30P with this camera. That should be the MXP setting.
You could also use 30i which would be the FXP setting.
You will get the best results in iMovie by shooting progressive.

  • Canon  Vixia HV30 capture issue on CS6 (Mac OSX)

This might be (hopefully) something in setup, but under Mac OSX Lion (10.7.4) / Premiere CS6, i am unable to capture video from my Canon Vixia HV30 - it's either i get a monstruous noise or simply get a 'capture device offline' message.
No one ever had a similar problem even withanother cam here? I posted weeks ago but never got any reply.
Am using the same cam under Windows with Premiere CS4 and never faced such an issue.
Matter of some sort of CODEC ?  Does not seem to require any specific driver for Mac based on Canon website.
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks,
    Rob

    Solved... (Almost!)
Someone pointed out that Canon has a software (they said there was no driver for Mac OS X so I had stopped looking...) But if it may help others, there is a ''CameraWindow'' for Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8  available.
As soon as I installed it, I could capture both from Adobe Premiere CS6 and iMovie.
One problem remaining though : the noise (feedback-like) that gets out from... the system's sound card ! (when capture is ongoing). I have to shut down the volume completely.  Never had this issue under Windows, need to figure out why this happens now.
Jeff thanks again for your assistance, even though the solution was somewhere else.
If anyone has a clue for the noise issue ... please let me know
    Rob
