Canon XA10 and XA20 audio noise

Hello,
I work with a Canon XA10 and Canon XA20. Both seem to pick up a fair amount of audio noise (like a static shhhhhh), even before I connect wireless microphones. The wireless microphones just intensify it. Is it normal for Canon camcorders to pick up some audio noise? Are there settings to work with to fix this, or should I just plan to continue eliminating the noise in Adobe Audtion, or any other program you would recommend? I greatly appreciate any help you can provide.

Hello Clare27,
With regards to the camcorder picking up audio noise, the answer would be two fold: yes- as it could potentially record any noise which is present near the microphones when recording, and no- as the camcorder should not actively add static or other 'generated' type noise, such as interference.  That can result from things like connections not being plugged in all the way, crossed cables, receivers and transmitters if anything like that is present.
The camcorder should be set to utilize your external microphone/s only and disabling the onboard microphone.  Having the onboard microphone disabled will cut down on the chances of ambient noise being recorded.  Other than that, simply having your microphones themselves set up and used properly should produce a clean signal which is recorded by the camcorder.

  • 27" iMacs, Canon XA10, and FCP X:  thoughts?

    Dear all,
I have a question-- I'm about to sink a lot of money in to buying 5 Apple computers, and I wanted some feedback from this community.  I'm refreshing a video editing lab that has traditionally run off of Mac Pros.  The last time we made this purchase in 2008, I simply did not see using anything but a Mac Pro with Final Cut 7 as a legitimate option.  But now, with the strong advances made by iMacs, I'm inclined to go with "beefy" iMacs.
Here are some details about our computational usage:
    •  These computers are used by beginning-level film students (we are not a film school).
    •  The most complicated projects they make (technically) are 15 minute documentaries with very little motion graphics, intricate editing effects, etc.
    •  The cameras that get used with these computers are Canon XA10.
    •  The lab will shortly be running FCP X (or outside possibility of Avid Media Composer)
    The iMac model I'm conisidering:
    • 27-inch screen
    • 3.4ghz processor
    • 16GB RAM
    • 1TB Fusion drive
    • 1GB graphics card
So... does anyone see a reason why purchasing this iMac model would be a bad idea?  Anyone want to make a case for a Mac Pro?  For waiting for the upcoming new Mac Pro?
I appreciate any feedback/tips/suggestions you might have.
    Thanks in advance!

It's hard to make the case for or against the new MP when we have no information yet on price – or any hands-on reports from editors.
But it's hard to see how the iMac would be a bad choice – a great display – and processing power that could easily handle the kind of projects you describe as well as the AVCHD format the Canon shoots. And whatever the MP ends up priced at, it is hard to imagine it not costing significantly more than your configured iMac – particularly if you want an equivalent display.
    Good luck.

  • Canon Camcorders XA10 and HFR17 Picture Quality

I have recorded two video shots one with a Canon XA10 and the other with Canon HFR17. Both video quality and bitrates were identical (see attached photos).
I have inserted the two video files in a video editor and the output file is m2ts. If you look closely, the XA10 picture is much sharper than the HFR17 even both video shots have identical bitrates etc. I think the CMOS sensor of the XA10 is much superior. Even when I reduced the frame size of XA10 to 1220, the XA10 output is also sharper.
How can I make both camcorders have the same picture quality?

  • Audio garbled on import from Canon XA10 to FCPX

I'm running the current FCPX on the current Yosemite OS on a maxed out Late 2012 Mac Mini.  Just bought a Canon XA10 and recorded HiDef clips to the internal HD.  During recording I monitored the audio on headphones and it was good.  When I play back the clips on the camera, again the audio is good.  But when I import them to FCPX the audio is garbled.  You can make out the sync comments but the audio is terrible, not anywhere close to what I heard outside of FCPX.  First I imported all 12 clips.  Then I tried just importing 1 clip to a different Library.  Even tried exporting a .mov from the project and playing it on Quicktime. Always same result. Canon, Mac or FCPX problem?  Thanks!

With the current footage you are using I cannot think of a reason why FCP X is messing with the audio.
    Things to try:
Shoot more footage on a different card with different settings. Avoid mixing different types of footage on the one card/storage device.
Try adjusting Project audio settings in FCP X e.g.. 5.1 to stereo, stereo to dual mono etc.
Tinker until you hit a workable combination if you are lucky.
BTW: I searched the FCP X forum and there is info regarding the XA10 and capturing, some good and bad reports but nothing definitive.
At least a few users have had success with that camera using FCP X.

  • 30p with a Canon XA10 - need help with Final Cut 7 "FIELD DOMINANCE" setting and an explanation of "drop frames". Thank you!!

I shot footage using a Canon XA10 and there are issues with the HD quality not looking as crisp as it should.  I am trying to make sure the settings in Final Cut are right.  Need help confirming what should be in "Field Dominance" --- have seen discussions about making sure it's set to "none" but I'm confused as to what to do.
Also someone suggested I use "drop frames" to change from 30p to 24p within Final Cut.  He couldn't explain how to do it so any input appreciated as well as any thoughts on whether this is a good option to try.

If you're shooting 30p, field dominance should be set to none.   Since you need to use log and transfer to bring this material in to fcp, I would assume it would be set correctly automatically.  Are you sure you've set the camera properly?
Drop frames will not change 30 p to 24p.   Dropframe timecode simply refers to the number assigned to each frame which drops an occasional number (not any frames) so the timecode duration is the actual duration, since 30p videoi is actually 29.97 frames per second which each frame assigned a timecode number.
This is very basic video stuff and requires some basic knowledge of video.  Wikipedia is a pretty good resource for much of this stuff plus there are lots of great resources on the web.  Look up interlaced and progressive video, 24p and 30p.
And as far as judging quality, you can only get an accurate view of the quality in fcp when you have a video card attached to a video monitor.  The viewer and canvas are only an approximation of what the quality is.  Minimally, set the canvas or viewer to 100% to get a better approximation of the quality.

  • Importing from a Canon XA10

I have a Canon XA10 and am shooting in 1080/25p (European model), which is recorded by Canon in a 50i stream.  I believe the 25p is actually 25psf.  When I import into FCP X and move a clip into a project, the system says I have 1080i HD 25i Stereo.  The only option I have is to change it to 25p.  Would 25p be correct, or should it have been 50i which does not appear as an option for this footage.

Your 25P mode is different from your 25PF mode. They are very different.  I have the HF G10 which is identical in practically all respects except for XLR connections, handle and a few controls.  You have a 25PF mode that is packed into the 50 frame format, but it is not native mode to the sensor.  Your 25P mode is native.  I am on the 30P, 24P, 60i format, but yours should work the same.  I read in my 30PF format all the time in FCP X without problems through the Import from Camera.
If you want the best progressive mode your camera has, then use the 25P.  Some control modes, however, no longer apply when using this mode. By the way, I also use 30PF all the time and have never paid attention to what FCP X tells me about it ... it works great for all I do. 24PF is not quite as good as native 24P (my version of camera), but practically identical to most eyes.  Best wishes.

  • Setting Correct Sequence Presets with footage from Canon XA10? Always showing 29.97fps Confused!

I just got the Canon XA10 and new at Video editing. If I shoot in Cinamatic mode (24fps) or Auto (60i) etc.. When I import to my computer and Premier Pro it is showing my setting at 29.97 FPS on anything I shoot no matter what frame rate I shot in.
I called Canon and they said not to worry that is is shooting in correct mode (nice answer) but has something to do with the way it converts it for NTS compliant, etc.. but I am confused that anything I import to computer and Premier Pro always show 29.97fps no matter if I shot it in 24, 60fps etc..
Can someone clarify this for me as why it always shows this and what presets I should be using if I shot it in "Cinama" mode 24fps but it is showing 29.97fps in Premier pro?
I have quality set in SP
So when I import to Premier Pro or my computer my meta data is always showing no matter waht frame rate I set in camera when shooting. Running Windows.
    1140X1080 (1.3333)
    29.97fps 4800HZ
    Thank you!
    Kim

    Hi Kim,
I'm about to purchase the XA10 also and use it with PPro CS5.5 so I'm very interested in your questions - and the forum's answers.  Are you using CS5 or CS5.5?
Allthough I can't help answer your question yet, I can confirm and add to pabalsamo's advice  - if you want to capture full HD video quality, you'll need to switch to MXP or FXP mode.  These are the only two settings that allow full HD 1920x1080 video recording and the picture quality is outstanding.  However, if the XA10 is like the HFS21 (my current camera) you may have problems when it comes to editing MXP footage.  To be safe, I usually stick with FXP and I'm very happy with the results.  The default setting on your XA10 may be 'SD'  (I'm not sure why Canon does this) which is why you found yourself shooting in it...   I might be naive suggesting this, but I'm wondering if shooting in SD has anything to do with the problem your having?  Maybe just to eliminate, try shooting in FXP, 24P and see how Adobe recognizes it...
By the way there's a good introductory article on HD compression/codecs/bit rates here:  http://www.camcorderinfo.com/d/Reviews&level_b=Camcorder&level_c=HD.htm#
Best of luck and hope to hear more answers and maybe even be able to provide some in the near future.

  • Canon XA10 rendered footage problems

I'm using my new Canon XA10 and shot footage and editing in Final Cut Pro X.  Everything is going great until I render it and watch it.  Anything that moves I have noticed that there is a large amount of jagged edges that appear.
Info on my footage is: 1920x1080/ 29.97 fps - 1080i
                                      Codecs: H.264, Linear PCM
    I'm storing all my footage on a Media G/Drive 750 GB 7200rpm.
I will listen and try anything I can to get this footage to look as awesome coming out as it looks going in!!!
    Thank you!!
New to posting so please be paitent with me!!!

    Tom, here's a question...just so I'm clear on this:
I also have an XA-10 (as well as a 7D).  So I'd typically be working with 1080p footage.  Obviously, for performance sake, I'd want to switch playback to Proxy while editing.  Then, as you suggest, switch playback prefrences back to "optimized" (ProRes 422) for exporting.  But when switching back to 422, don't you have to re-render everything?

  • Canon XA10 .mts audio not imported?

    Hello,
I have CS6 Master Collection. A few weeks ago it all worked well. Now, when I create a new project, the XA10 option included within the AVCHD sequence settingsfor the sequence does not appear.
I don't know if I was clear on that, English is not my first language...
The thing is that when I import the videos once I have selected the sequence I want, only the video appears, not the audio.
Could anyone please tell me what I can do to get both the video and the audio? I mean, which sequence settings do I have to choose?
    I was shooting in 25fps, 1080x1920.
I am still an amateur and I really need help because this is my biggest project so far! I really appreciate your help, thank you!

  • Girder Plugin and audio noise

I ave a problem with girder and the msi remote plugin.
There is a ticking noise like every 100ms or something that drives me crazy.
I use headphones and it's very noticable.
If i enter girder setup, uncheck the msi remote plugin, click ok.
    The noise is gone.
I have no idea why a remote plugin can cause audio noise lol
Is it just my system or is this a known problem ?
I have tried the nforce drivers which came with the box, and yesterday
also the latest nforce drivers, same problem.
Strange thing is if i use the MSI mega key finder it doesnt have that noise...

    Hi
The plugin uses the same API as the Radio does. So it seems to be not unlikely that the driver will create noise on your audio output.
You're saying that you hear the noise every 100 ms. Please try to adjust the time resultion in the plugin's settings (let's say for 1000 ms). If you hear the noise then every second, the problem is related to the MSIDrvIF.dll driver which comes form MSI. In that case there is nothing I can do about it.
Otherwise the problem is somewhere else. Perhaps the driver initialization process behaves strange on your system. Then get in contact with me and I'll try to adjust the source code (adding mute to the radio or something like that).
    Regards

  • Can someone help with importing video from Canon XA10 (AVCHD) into PE 11?

In PE 11 when I import video from my canon xa10 (avchd) the quality is terrible, I also have a canon xa20, 60D and gopro that I video with and they all turn out with great video quality.  Is there a reason why the xa10 video quality is bad? Setting I need to change?

    Thanks for the follow up.
In Premiere Elements 11 and 12 takes over setting the project preset based on the properties of the first file drag to the Timeline. Sometimes it does it right; sometimes not. You can check what the project has set by using the readings from Edit Menu/Project Settings/General and the readings for Editing Mode, Timebase, Frame Size, and Pixel Aspect Ratio even if the fields look grayed out. If the project preset is set for NTSC AVCHD Full HD1080p30, then the Edit Menu/Project Settings/General should be as represented in the following screenshot
Please refer to setting the project preset yourself manually and then importing the source media into the project.

Depending on how the current stage of troubleshooting progresses, you might want to post a screenshot

  • CANON XA10 10.6.8 Good Video Editing Software

Ok, here's another Canon XA10 user needing help.  Just bought the camera and will need to get video editor.  Any good suggestions as to which brand plus whatever necessary converter software also if needed?  Read a lot of the other posts from everywhere, but can't seem to sort it all out yet.
    Please help.  Thanks.

I just installed OuickTime 7 Pro in my Mac Pro Ver 10.6.8. The video I am trying to view is codec h264 Compression dvcpro 50 hd. I have audio but no video. It says I need other software with QuickTime for it to work. Dose anyone know what I need?
H.264 video should be supported by your basic Snow Leopard operating system. The DVCPRO HD family of codecs is part of the Apple "Pro" codecs package which is normally installed as part of a "Pro" video editing suite installer or contemporaneously installed separately as part of one of the newer pro editing apps like FCPX. if you already have one of these pro suites or apps installed or available, then re-install the correct codec package that is missing. If not, you will need to purchase a Pro suite or app to be able to install the required codec package.

  • Downloading avchd video from Canon XA10 to iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011)

I have a mid 2011 iMac running Mountain Lion. I typically download HD AVCHD video from my Canon XA10 camcorder by inserting an SD card from the camera into the side of the computer. When I click on the SD card, thumbnails of the video footage appear on the iMac and when I click on a thumbnail, the clip opens in Quicktime. Now I can view the clip. This is all fine.
Here's my question: when I look at the Quicktime movie inspector, the following appears:
The original footage is 1920 x 1080 since I shoot at the highest setting on the camera (MXP).
But the "Current Size:" above in the inspector is 1736 x 977.
Does Quicktime degrade the footage? Is there a way to preserve the full 1920 x 1080?
When I import the footage into iMovie (which I do directly from the chip into iMovie) is the quality degraded as well, even though the transfer into iMovie doesn't involve Quicktime (at least I don't think it does).
If, after sharing a clip from iMovie via Quicktime to create a file to upload to Vimeo, I can view it in Quicktime and the same thing happens:
The inspector says "Current Size: 1736x 977."
Any advice? Am I doing something wrong and as a result losing resolution?
    Thank you,
    David

  • Sony NX30 or Canon XA10 for Final Cut Pro X?

I produce for nonprofits and am about to purchase a new iMac with Final Cut Pro X, and need to also purchase a video camera. The Sony NX30 or Canon XA10 are in my budget, but my challenge is that I'm not a real technical person, and so need to be able to import the footage easily into FCP-X. ANY advice on which camera would be best? Any advice would be very much appreciated.

This forum is not really suitable for comparing cameras as few (if any) people will have experience of both.
As the cameras are both AVCHD there should be no difference regarding the "ease of import".
The only thing that should concern you is whether one performs optically better than the other  .  .  .  .  if neither, then get the cheaper.
Google for camera reviews, but treat with caution those written by customers.
The best reviews are usually by professional testers who subject them to a standardised battery of tests.

  • ISight makes croaking sounds and produces audio dropouts in recordings

    Hi!
This is weird and hopefully not normal?!?
My new iSight made these short cracking sounds (kind of like scratching over sheet of paper) from the beginning.
Once when starting up the Mac and all along during video recording or conferencing.
That alone wouldn't be such a big problem but audio is very weak too, since it produces drop-outs and other weird noise especially during conferencing or even just during skype phoning (no video).
While trying to record that sound (iMic) I found out that its not possible because other Audio In dropped out too, while iSight is croaking :-S
Of course I tried out everything I could and the problem is still there even when the iSight is the only peripheral (USB and FW) on my G5.
ISight is the perfect webcam and makes awesome picture and sound quality besides the mentioned issues. Hopefully I don't have to send it back.
    Thanks for your help buddies!

How to test your iSight to ensure it is functional should help you find out whether you need to have your new iSight repaired or exchanged under warranty.
If your G5 is otherwise reliable and stable, because you are having the same problem with your iSight when driven by different apps, your iSight, iSight's connecting cable, or your G5s firewire or connections would seem to be the most likely suspects.
