Canon XF100 and FCP X

I would like to know if the the most recent plugin from Canon now makes transferring files from camcorders like Canon FX100- to FCP X relatively straightforward if one is using MacBook Pro-version 10.6.8

It's hard to make the case for or against the new MP when we have no information yet on price – or any hands-on reports from editors.
But it's hard to see how the iMac would be a bad choice – a great display – and processing power that could easily handle the kind of projects you describe as well as the AVCHD format the Canon shoots. And whatever the MP ends up priced at, it is hard to imagine it not costing significantly more than your configured iMac – particularly if you want an equivalent display.
Good luck.

  • Canon XF100 and full HD recording

    Hello,
I am Canadian videographer established in Hawaii for a while and I am developing a project.  I want to make Hawaii known to Canadian via Skype.  It is a new concept of reality show where people can follow me in Hawaii in real time and ask me questions.  It would be a premiere in the reality show world.  You are welcome to financially support the project (around 900$).  It could be an awesome way to promote how Skype can be powerful. But now, I need your help to make it a success. I use a Canon XF100 and a MacBook Pro 2011.  I want to use the Canon XF100 as an external HD camera on the MacBook Pro for his features, his XLR quality sound and the Full HD video.  I tried to add the link to the diagram but it says "it is not a valid URL" then it is...  So, here are the details:
    The MacBook Pro settings: Skype 5.8 + Mac OS X 10.7 + 2,2 GHz I7 + 8G RAM + 256 SSD hard disk drive.
    What I want to do:
    - Use Clear Hotspot for wireless internet (with G4 and G3).
    - Connect the Canon XF100 to BlackMagic Design via HDMI.
    - Connect BlackMagic Design to MacBook Pro via Thunderbolt.
    - Connect the headset to the MacBook Pro via USB.
    My questions:
Does Skype recognize Thunderbolt connection from the BlackMagic Design?
How can I record audio from the headset microphone, from people questioning and from the Canon XF100?
How can I record Full HD chat video from Skype (Ecamm can’t do that)?
I look forward to having answers from you as soon as possible.  Thank you.

Yes. with it's newer cameras, (T4i, T5i, 6D, 70D,5D3,etc) Canon gets around this by allowing you to continue past 4GB but the video is automatically split into separate files. This means you will need to edit the movie back together in post processing.
Magic Lantern does not degrade your video quality. It can actually improve your quality thanks to all the options it adds, but it does not allow you to exceed the 4GB limit.
Magic Lantern has an "Movie Restart" option to go past 30 mins. The camera will stop after 29.59minutes, but will restart in less than a second, so you don't lose very much and you don't need to touch the camera for that, as it will work automatically.

  • Can't import mxf-files (Canon XF100) into FCP 10.0.8 after Mavericks

    Hello
It's not possible for me, to import mxf-files into FCP.
I haven't yoused FCP for a couple of days, but today I could not import files from my Canon XF100, so i think the problems came with Mavericks??
Does any of you have same problems?
    What to do?
    Kind regards
    Thomas (Denmark)

    Hi Russ -
I downloaded the utility and driver from here:
    http://www.learn.usa.canon.com/resources/blogs/2012/20120223_xf_utilities_and_pl ugin_updates.shtml
But after looking around realized it isn't updated for Mavericks yet. I was only given two files and both weren't in any sort of directory structure- here is a screenshot.
Thanks in advance for your help!

  • 27" iMacs, Canon XA10, and FCP X:  thoughts?

    Dear all,
I have a question-- I'm about to sink a lot of money in to buying 5 Apple computers, and I wanted some feedback from this community.  I'm refreshing a video editing lab that has traditionally run off of Mac Pros.  The last time we made this purchase in 2008, I simply did not see using anything but a Mac Pro with Final Cut 7 as a legitimate option.  But now, with the strong advances made by iMacs, I'm inclined to go with "beefy" iMacs.
Here are some details about our computational usage:
    •  These computers are used by beginning-level film students (we are not a film school).
    •  The most complicated projects they make (technically) are 15 minute documentaries with very little motion graphics, intricate editing effects, etc.
    •  The cameras that get used with these computers are Canon XA10.
    •  The lab will shortly be running FCP X (or outside possibility of Avid Media Composer)
    The iMac model I'm conisidering:
    • 27-inch screen
    • 3.4ghz processor
    • 16GB RAM
    • 1TB Fusion drive
    • 1GB graphics card
So... does anyone see a reason why purchasing this iMac model would be a bad idea?  Anyone want to make a case for a Mac Pro?  For waiting for the upcoming new Mac Pro?
I appreciate any feedback/tips/suggestions you might have.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Canon HG20 and FCP 7

I have searched the forums and read everything there is to read and I have tried everything there is to try, but I still can not get FCP to read my Canon HG20.
I am using Log and Transfer, I have changed the settings from ProRes to Apple Intermediate and back again. Nothing works. I can locate my camera on my computer and in FCP, but I can not import any videos I have recorded.
Does anyone here have a work-around that might not be posted on these forums? Please let me know if you guys have any information whatsoever.

If you can access the folders content than copy everything as it is on your Drive then disconnect your camera and access the content folder through L&T.

PS. Do you have an old version of FXFactory installed in your computer? If so you may want to replace that with 2.1 or higher.

Well, for FCP to see this file structure and recognize it, you need to download the Canon XF Log and Transfer plugin...
    http://software.canon-europe.com/software/0040354.asp?model=
    >I don't have the original clips on the card.
Meaning that they didn't back up the full card structure?  Lordy...very few shooters do this and it is maddening.  If you don't have the full card structure, even with the plugin, FCP cannot log and transfer.
As for ClipWrap2...that should work.  Do you have the right files?

  • Lastest FCP Workflow for Canon 5DM2 and 7D ??

I recently made the decision to go 100% with Final Cut Pro over Media Composer and Premier Pro and did a search on how to get the Canon 5DM2 and 7D files into Final Cut Pro for efficient editing without native image or data losses via avoidance of transfer or trans-coding losses. I did the cumbersome task of doing a couple searching and reading some 25 to 60 pages of material on the subject only to learn that one link that supposedly had a complete "solve" is a dead link for some droplets.
So, that brings me to this post, does anyone have an updated 2011 solution that is really been determined to be the "best" solution to achieve the above goals of getting the material into FCP without losses or complications?
Thanks in advance to those who post input to a solve.

    Hi there,
in terms of best way without complications, get the H.264 into pro res before you edit.
establish your workflow as to how to do this, Shane Ross has an excellent tutorial on the subject if you do a search here.
In terms of best quality to use, there are many ways of looking at this - for instance if you are exclusively cutting 5D material and its for web delivery then proresLT is fine, if you are cutting 5D into high end sources then prores HQ may be more suitable for yout.
My own experience is that 5DtoRGB provides the cleanest way of transcoding (at the expense of speed) over the others (Mpegstreamclip, compressor, EOS plugin etc) but thats just my choice - theres an article here
    http://motionlifemediablog.wordpress.com/2010/09/02/5dtorgb-color-tests/
that talks about it in more detail, and theres a good forum here
    http://www.cinema5d.com/index.php
you may want to peruse, particularly with reference to flat gamma picture styles,
bottom line though is to get out of H.264 asap and make sure your sequence matches your source footage!
    have fun

  • Any timeline on when the Canon XF100 will be supported?

Anyone heard from Canon or Apple on when the Canon XF100 camera will be supported? FCP 7 has a plugin for it but not FCP X. Previously spoke with both companies with no results. Files can't be imported.

Apple will say, if they ever said anything, that it's up to Canon to build the plugin. I guess it's going to be a question of demand and how much is involved in the API for a completely new application.

  • Media Encoder won't import MXF files from Canon XF100

I'm running Media Encoder CC on two laptops: a macbook pro and a macbook air. Both systems are running the most recent version of Media Encoder CC (including updates) but only one will import MXF files from a Canon XF100? The macbook air imports and encodes the files without issue, however the macbook pro won't import the same MXF files and kicks the following error:
The file /Users/.../.../.../AA0106.MXF could not be imported. Could not read from source. Please check the settings and try again.
I could understand if both computers errored but using the same file, one will import and the other will not. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Just try this and see if it will work for you.
Open iPhoto > Preferences > General and deselect 'Connecting camera opens: iPhoto'.
Change it to 'No Application' and close iPhoto.
Now connect your camera to your computer and turn it on or better still use a card reader.
If iMovie tries to open, close it.
Your camera/card should now appear as an external drive.
Copy/paste your video files into a new folder on your desktop.
    Eject and disconnect your camera/card.
Now open iMovie and go File > Import > Movies... and navigate to that folder.

  • 1. importing MXF files 2. Canon XF100

    1. Can MXF files be imported/ingested into FCP 7.0.3?
    2. Can anyone recommend a suitable work flow for FCP 7.0.3 and Canon XF 100 and Canon XF Utility and plug in
    3. If the Canon XF 100 FCP plug in has been installed should it be visible anywhere?
    thank you in anticipation

    1. Yes.  You need to download the Canon XF Log and Transfer plugin in order for this to work:
    http://software.canon-europe.com/software/0040354.asp?model=
    2. Yes...I have a full tutorial on the tapeless workflow with FCP, found here:
    http://library.creativecow.net/ross_shane/tapeless-workflow_fcp-7/1
    3. No...well, yes, but it is a system file buried in the OS.  Just install it, and then use the Log and Transfer workflow.

  • Canon Log and Transfer problem

    Hello all,
I'm trying to upload some HD files from my Canon HF20 on the latest edition of FCP to my iMac 10.58 and running into a problem.
FCP recognizes the video captured on the internal memory. However, it does not recognize the video captured on the SD card in the camera.
    Any ideas?

Well, I'm connected to my iMac using a USB. (iMac is running version 10.58 of Leopard). I'm using the latest version of FCP 7.0.2
I can log and transfer files "taped" to the internal memory of my HF20. Files show up fine and import fine.
However, the files that are on the SD card in the camera don't show up in the Log and transfer. ( I put the SD card on a card reader and still no luck.)
I put the card back into the camera and hit the "Add volume" on the top left of the log and transfer and I can see my Canon drive and the other drive which is called "No Name" (I'm assuming simply because I haven't named it anything) I'm also assuming the No Name Drive is the SD card. However, I may be wrong. All the files are grayed out on this drive.
Not sure what else I need to add to give you more info. Let me know if what other info needed and I'll post it.
    Thanks again!

  • Problem with Canon XF100.

I have many files already saved on my network drive from my documentary project.  CS6 deals with the files satisfactorily but Premiere Pro can not.  What is the deal.  How can I take MXF files already on my drive and make them function?  I've tried to deal with support but the Phone call was disconnected and he never tried to get back with me. The ticket says withdrawn.  Online Chat ended when the team viewer screen made the everything on my desktop disappear and then the chat screen went away.  That ticket also says withdrawn.  Neither agent tried to reconnect with me. Sent an email to [email protected] but have not had a response.  Any one have any solutions or ideas on how to get Adobe support out of the US?
    [Thread title shortened.]

Ok, so I made this discovery, I have observed some different reactions of Premiere Pro 7.2 CC when it deals with a MXF videos and I have not determined why it acts differently in these instances first:  When dealing with a Folder  on my network drive tilted AA1788 that resides in a clips straight of the canon xf100 CF card.  In the AA1788 folder are 5 .mxf files with their corresponding .xmp and .sif files along with a AA1788.cif file and AA1788.xml file.   When viewing this folder via the media browser in PPro CC  i can see the XML file along with the appropriate number of and addressed (AA178801-AA178805) MXF videos,  what I have discovered however is that PPro has spanned all the clips together and created five 5 identical files with the original AA1788xx file designation.  OK so this is a bit frustrating but at least I can deal with that.    I can not say at the moment that this is a consistent phenomena.  In running a test on Folder AA1733 that resided on my desktop and contained many more MXF clips and corresponding files PPro did not span the clips together but left them as individual clips….  I suppose the best advice is keep a close watch when PPro CC deals with .MXF files.  I've yet to edit and output anything on PPro CC so I can not relay any information on that.  I must say that Adobe has been extremely deficient in dealing with this issue.  They are very eager to get you to update and spend the cash but very very Poor with the support and fixes after.

  • Canon XF100 HD - Does it's Codec Work in FCPX

I'm shooting a job with the
Canon XF100 HD it's format is Canon XF Codec
Does that codec work in Final Cut Pro X without any conversions?
I've looked at the supported Codec list for Final Cut Pro X and the Canon XF Codecis not listed.  However neither is another camera I use and that camera's codec works fine.
    Your feedback is much appreciated.

It works well in Lion as long as you have the plug-in from Canon installed.
    Good luck.

  • Connectivity and FCP

Up to this point in my FCP experience, I have used nothing but Log and Capture with my Canon NTSC ZR60 mini cassette camcorder which has worked great with FCP.  I am on the verge of purchasing a new Canon HD camcorder and am worried about connectivity issues using Log and Transfer.  The new Canon camcorder I am looking at says this about connectivity:   "USB|HDMI".  Will this work with Log and Transfer in FCP 7.0.3?  In addition, the camcorder has 8 gb of Flash Memory.  Not sure how that translates into video time?  Is upgrading to 32 gb of Flash Memory worth the expense?

Thank you, Russ.  I have watched Shane's tutorial:
Tapeless Workflow with Final Cut Pro 7
and found it very helpful.  The reason for my concern was I thought I read in one of the FCP threads that one had to use Firewire for the transfer but it is not listed in the Connectivity for the camcorder I am looking at.  Yes, the camcorder does have removeable media storage.  Is that my work around concerning Firewire and FCP?

  • Importing Canon XF100

I have a brand new iMac 27" with the latest version of FCPX installed.  I am trying to import the media from the 32GB flash card from a Canon XF100.  FCPX does not recognize the media.
I researched many threads, all leading me to download a Canon XF Utitlity Software
When I go to this site, it tells me that "There is no - software for the OS Version you selected."
I have the latest version of Mavericks
I tried downloading the version for 10.8 but nothing happens when I try to install the software.  It just says "extracting" files and then the launching window disappears.  I searched my computer for the extracted files...they are nowhere.
I do not want to use 3rd party software, so I appreciate the advice but would rather not go that route.
What am I doing wrong?  Why can't I find this software?
    Any help/advice will be appreciated.
