Canon XF105 - Interlaced??? 50fps?

I borrowed a 3D rig the other day with two Canon XF105s http://www.canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product_Finder/Camcorders/professional/XF105/
What I get off each camera is a bit baffling. In VLC I can see jaggies - it appears to be interlaced! Well, they'd only just been unpacked, so maybe that's how they come...
The files get recorded in a folder that contains four files, like...
AA0012.CIF
AA0012.XML
AA001201.MXF
AA001201.SIF
Puting the footage into AE it looks fine at 25fps. But strangely at 50fps I see 50 independent frames per second.
What is happening here? Can the footasge really be interlaced? Seems extraordinary. And does AE automatically de-interlace it?
And at 50fps is AE converting 50 fields/seconds into 50 frames/second? That could be useful...
Not sure what to do. Would first like to understand what's going on. There's a small sample here: https://www.yousendit.com/download/cnJnWGJBYTJvQnZ2Wmc9PQ It's a 12MB download
The owner's gone abroad and I can't reach him, hence I'm asking here.
Cheers!

It seems there is a 50i frame rate http://cpn.canon-europe.com/content/education/technical/compatibility_options_XF305_XF300. do
But this looks like 50p. Canon offer support for Avid and FCP but none it sems for Adobe.

  • Can Final Cut Pro X import .mxf files from Canon XF105

I have just bought new FCP X program,  and wanted to buy Canon XF105 - would FCPx can import .mxf - mpeg2 from Canon XF105 ?  Need your advice on this.

Unfortunately I can't test it because, though I have some XF media, I can't find the Canon XF Utility on their web site. It comes on the disc with the camera I'm told, but I don't have a camera.

  • Canon xf105 mxf files - importing multi channel audio into CC

    Hi there,
We've recently upgraded to CC across our department, and I'm importing footage shot on our Canon XF-105 using the MXF wrapper. In 5.5 I was able to simply drag and drop from the project into the timeline and have both channels of audio recorded there. In CC I can only see the audio recorded with channel 1 and my clip in this instance was plugged into channel 2. Is this something that is known? Am I missing something from the setup of the project?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Anything you need to know about the project or the files, give me a shout!
    Cheers,
    Paul

A lot of things have changed since 5.5.
You need to set up Preferences before importing.
Set Stereo to Mono in Audio / Default Audio Tracks.
Or Modify the audio channels of the clips in the Project Window.

  • Canon XF105 MXF Files Wrong Date Associated

The "Date Modified" on the MXF files is correct however the  "Date Created" on files from my camera is listed as December 31, 1969, and I believe this is making the date that is added to the name of my clip when ingested using Adobe Prelude wrong. Any idea how to make the "Date Created" the correct date that the file was actually created on?

    Hi bpanvideo!
    Thanks for the post.
Please ensure the correct date/time has been set in the camcorder.  To do this:
    Open the menu.
Select [Other Functions] > [Clock Set] > [Date/Time].
Use the joystick to change each field on the date/time screen.
Press <SET> to confirm and close the screen.
There is another setting you need to make sure is set correctly as well.  Please select [Time Zone] under the [Other Functions] menu and ensure it is set to your time zone.

  • Anyone Figure Out How To Edit Using Canon .mxf Files?

my Canon xf105 .mxf files won't import into Adobe Premier Pro 6.0.3...  Keep getting a "generic error".... and I've tried everything!
I've downloaded the Canon utilitiy, tried merging the clips, tried isolating the .mxf files, tried not touching the clip structure at all.....
    PLEASE HELP!!
I'm using a Mac OS 10.8.2 on Mountain Lion.

Put the CONTENTS folder in its own folder and name it e.g. Card 1.
Go to the Media Browser and click on Card 1.
Now your clips will show up and you can import them.
Or go to the Project Window and click on Card 1 and Import Folder.
    If you want single files.
Open XF Utility and Set Virtual Media (File) for Card 1.
Select all files and Export to MXF (Edit).
These single files can be imported into the Project Window.

  • Canon .MXF footage - should I transcode it? What to?

    I've got some footage recorded from a Canon XF105. It's 1920x1080 and it's 3D - so there's a pair of files for each clip.
In AE it plays frustratingly slowly and I have to do a RAM render to see it at full speed. In Premiere it plays ok.
Is there a format I'd be better off transcoding it to before working on it? One that doesn't lose quality but gains playback speed?
    I'm on a MacBook Pro with CS5.

To add to what Dave said, here is a wonderful post from Rick Gerard explaining why AE doesn't play back footage like an NLE.
Sony Vegas, Premiere Pro, Final Cut, Avid are all NLE's (Non Linear Editors) and they are specifically designed to playback a video stream. With any of them, if you stack enough layers or effects on the video they will have to render a new video stream based on pixel based calculations for every pixel in the stack. This rendering, especially for HD sources or for complex plug-ins, will take quite a bit of time.
After Effects, Flame, Fusion, Shake -- are all pixel based image processing applications that act very much like Photoshop. They calculate the values of every pixel in every frame, come up with a new pixel, and then play those pixels back as a video stream. More importantly, AE and all the other pixel based compositing apps, always work internally with completely uncompressed pixel data. NLE's rely on codecs and in some cases, hardware, to playback the video. It's an entirely different way of working with moving images.
In After Effects you enable the preview by loading a bunch of frames into RAM then the video stream is played back. You start the process with the 0 key on the numeric keypad and not with the Space Bar as you do in nearly every NLE ever created. The length of the preview depends entirely on how much free ram you have available and it takes some time to generate these new pixels. The more layers, the more effects, the more calculations that need to be performed the longer it will take to process the RAM preview. There's currently no way around this rendering time. A modern HLE will handle an amazing number of video streams simultaneously, but as soon as you exceed the capability of the system you're stuck with a render. Most NLE's, given the same number of calculations, actually take a little longer than After Effects to do the same kind of effects. Open GL, and other GPU acceleration helps many NLE's achieve higher performance but it has yet to be implemented into a pixel based compositing app. The sad truth of the matter is that if you want to do compositing in any of the available compositing apps, you have to wait for renders. They are getting better. Memory management and efficiency is improving. GPU accelerated effects are being added, but for now, that's about as good as it gets.
I hope this helps. As long as you use After Effects to create shots and don't try to make it do the work of a NLE you should be fine. Movies come from NLE's, amazing shots come from AE.

  • Error compiling movie in Premiere and failed export in AME (CS6) - PLEASE HELP!!!

    Hi,
I'm trying to export from my timeline which contains multiple mxf files shot with a canon xf105. i'm using cs6 on an apple mac and I never had this issue before:
When I try to export to a quick time movie directly from Premiere I get this message after 5 seconds:
When I send the video to AME I get this message including a sound of a sheep after 10 seconds:
I have about 100 7 second clips that make up an 11 minute movie. I copy and pasted 4 clips (28 seconds) into a new sequence and tried to export it and it worked, both directly through premiere and through AME. Does that mean that premiere and AME can't handle so many clips? Or why is it showing me an error?
I'm helpless and I need to finish this project very soon, I would be SO GRATEFUL for any help. Don't know what to do ..
    Thank you!

Thank you John. I sat all night for about 8 hours on it and found out what caused the error. I had about 100 clips in my timeline that I was trying to export as one movie. Four clips caused the error. These four clips would playback perfectly in premiere, the whole timeline would render and everything seemed normal. Only after exporting 5 clips at a time I could see where the export would fail and show an error. At the end it was four clips, these four would playback fail to export, causing the entire sequence to fail.
I have one question about this:
1 How and why did this happen? Does that happen often with MXF files shot on a canon xf camera?
2 How can I avoid this to happen again in the future?
3 Isn't there a quicker way to find out which clips are causing a problem, rather than having to export each of them first to find out (which is a very annoying thing to do if you're literallt working with hundreds of clips)?
Would be great if somebody has any insight for future reference!!!
    Thank you!

  • CS6-Media Encoder Fails on long (1hr +) H.264 render

    Windows 7 - 64 Bit. 8 GBs RAM
Adobe Pr and other programs on C: internal Plenty of hard disk space left 300+GBs
External high speed 7200 RPM RAID 1 where the media is stored.
External high speed 7200 RPM Non RAID drive for rendering to be written to.
    Both drives are eSata.
CS6 Pr and Media Encoder 6.0.0.382 (OP update: It appears that has been an update to this version, I am going to download the updates and see if that fixes this.)
FOLLOW UP: It appears that the update did fix the problem. I have multiple workstations and was under the impression I had updated them all. I have not fully tested this yet, but for now, I consider it fixed.
Footage is a single capture of a lecture. 1 hr. 20 minutes.
Shot on Canon xf105 in MXF format at 1280x720 23.976p (US)
Footage goes together fine (many multiple file clips 'chained' or butted up against one another, as is done when you shoot a continuous take)
The footage plays fine in Pr in final form for export.
No special effects. one dissolve (intro title slide to lecture)
    Reproduceable problem:
    i export to Media Encoder.
I choose H.264 and Vimeo Wide Screen SD 23.976
The file exports about 2/3rds of the way, not the same place each time, and fails with no definitive error message. The log shows, "Export Error: Error compiling movie. Unknown error."
Rendered file to external drive (have more than one, have tried it on two, with same results)
All drives have plenty of disk space on them.
I tried cleaning the Media Encoder Media Cache. Same result.
I tried moving the cache files to an almost empty external disk. No change.
I broke the video into a 10 minute segment, it rendered just fine with the same settings.
This seems to be a bug in Media Encoder. Is there a fix for this? A workaround? My client would like a single long file of the presentation.
Could the 8 GBs of RAM be an issue? Not sure why it would. Or is this a known bug for Media Encoder?
I also had a second job today, similar in that I needed to take 6 multiple takes of the same person, drop them onto a timeline and render it to Vimeo for them to review. same issue. Got 13'05" into the compile and it failed.  So something is odd. I have compiled much longer footage before, that was done with this camera.

If you have done a complete reinstall, and ran the Adobe CleanScript CS5 (that is the latest), then a Repair Install should not be needed - it would do nothing.
For info, to do a Repair Install, one would insert the installation disc. When the installer module has loaded, it will survey one's system. If it finds the Adobe program(s), it will ask if you wish to Uninstall, or Repair Install. When one chooses Repair Install, it surveys the system again, for that program, and will replace, or correct any issues. This is usually MUCH faster, than doing an uninstall/reinstall.
Good luck, and not sure what else could be the cause.

  • French guy have exportation issue with AE CS5

    Hello,
First, I'm French. My English is bad. I'm sorry.
So I am currently editing a documentary on Final Cut Pro 7.0.3
I work on Mac OS X Version 10.6.7
Processor: 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory: 16GB DDR3 1066 MHz
    I shot with a Canon XF105.
I exported some shots that I wanted to edit or where I wanted to add animation (type banner presentation)
I have exported quicktime sequence for later import to After Effects CS5.
And when I have finished and I have exported  those shots from After Effects, I find myself quite often with images that bug, much like when you re-record on a videotape at the time of VCRs.
    http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/849/capturedcran20120507120.png/
I export in optimal rendering parameters, with the Quicktime Animation codec.
I really do not understand what the problem is due, I've never met before.
If you could help me, it would be great, because my deadline is approaching and I'm running out of ideas ...
Thank you in advance for your help!

The regularity of the patterns would suggest that these are decode errors in the MPEG stream, possibly a timecode issue. Can you open your footage natively in AE? Do you see the same artifacts then? Also what if you try other CoDecs like PNG or ProRes? In any case, double-check your framerate and export settings.

  • Best workflow for AVCHD 1080i50 footage in iMovie 10.0.7?

I shoot video using both my iPhone 5 and my Canon Legria HF R16. The first shoots progressive video, but with the second I shoot AVCHD (mts files) interlaced 1080i50 (that is 50 fields/second, giving 25 interlaced frames / sec). I recently purchased iMovie 10.0.7 from Mac App Store and I like it a lot. I don't have any problems with iPhone's (progressive) footage, but Canon's (interlaced) footage appear very noisy. Do we know how this version of iMovie handles interlace video? Any proposed workflow for interlaced video for good quality of export?

To increase the possibility of getting an answer, I would like to set a simpler general question: when using interlaced video with iMovie, do you:
    a) import it as it is (interlaced)?
    or
    b) deinterlace it and then import the resulting progressive video?

  • Mobile video only playing through headphones from 5D MKIII .MOV mp4 conversion

I have not run into something like this before and hope that someone has...
I have been capturing video with a 5D MKIII for a while now and create videos for work and upload to YouTube and mobile platforms. Someone recently told me that through the YouTube app, these videos (this one for example: Hail Recovery in V12 Corn - YouTube) will play fine on computer browsers and on a mobile device through headphones. When you try to play through the YouTube app without headphones, this video will play only garbled sound and very quietly.
I have traced the problem to the 5D MKIII video capture, as capture with a canon XF105 doesn't have the issue (after AME conversion to mp4) on upload or playing directly from a mobile device or streaming from something like Dropbox.
I'm not sure what to check now. I have tried almost every conceivable export choice and setting through AME CC2014 (and tried CC as well). I have tried this through my laptop and another machine on the same software set. I have tried exporting just the MP3 and listening via dropbox (same issue - sound garbled and quiet). I have tried W/O Quicktime installed on machine (thinking there might be an issue with the AME QT and the local QT. I have tried taking the .MOV file direct from the camera and creating a .AVI and MXF file and then used those in editing and export to MP4. None of these things have changed the outcome.
    The things I know are:
    - only happens from DSLR not other captures (like XF105)
    - only happens to sound trying to come through mobile device speaker (works with headphones) - I have checked the various 'mute' settings on all mobile devices i've used and this isn't the issue. I have tried Samsung, iPhone and iPad all with the same result
    - audio plays normally through computer browsers and through mobile device headphones
If anyone has had this experience please let me know. This is very problematic as we have transitioned to using DSLR for most video now. It seems to be something with streaming but it also happens when I take the file (from the camera > mp4 or after editing in Premiere/AE > mp4) and play direct from the device. It must be something with the conversion from .MOV to mp4 but what?
Thanks in advance for any insights.

  • C300 MXF import fails across CS6

I am having trouble with footage shot with the Canon C300.
In Premiere, Prelude, & Media Encoder Ingest/Import fails with 'generic error' or 'unable to read xmp'
I can play the footage in Resolve 9, & in VLC.
I have tried transcoding it using Pavtube MXF Converter.
When transcoded to MPEG2 the ingest/import still fails.
When transcoded to WMV it can then be ingested/imported.
    Has anyone else experienced this?
    Anyone have a solution?
    Thank you community :-)

Have you tried a re-install of CS6? Having to transcode files that should play natively is a heck of a problem. I would wipe the system drive and start agian. Contacting Adobe support is also on tap.
This should work; from CS6 white papers:
"Adobe Systems and Canon have collaborated to bring highly e&cient, #le- and tape-based work!ows
to Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 so"ware, giving users the ability to natively edit HD and SD footage shot
with Canon video cameras, including the Canon EOS C300 Digital Cinema camera, Canon XF305/300,
and Canon XF105/100, which record video on solid-state media using the powerful Canon XF
MPEG-2 codec with Full HD 1920x1080 resolution, 50Mbps bit rate, and 4:2:2 color sampling."

  • How to produce live video

    Hi,
All my amateur news broadcasts are edited after filming. I record my video using a canon 5D mark 2 and a panasonic GH1. I record my audio on an RME fireface UFX. Is there any way I could cut between the camera's  while live and how would I do this?
    Thanks

For the type of camera required you need a camera that has HD-SDI. HMDI is not a solution because of the limited physical length of the cable. Instances of HD-SDI cameras are the Canon XF105/XF305 and the Panasonic 250 and the XDCAM-EX line from Sony.
The Canon XF305 is the only handheld with HD-SDI that is approved by the BBC for HD productions in its default configuration. I highly recomment this camera. It is not up to the C300, but then it is much more affordable.
In addition you need a switcher. B&H Photo is a good place to start: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/Live-Switcher/ci/2865/N/4258705338

  • Convert h.264 to prores

    Hi -
I am not clear as to whether my clips are converted to Prores after import because the clip CODECs on the clip browser window still shows H.264 Codec after I select Transcoding:"Create optimized media".  So in effect, even though I optimized some of the clips, i can't tell which clips are optimized and which aren't because they all still show as H.264.
My clips are .MOV and imported from a Canon DSLR at 50fps 1280x720 (So i can conform to 24fps for slow motion)
    Any thoughts gratefully received.  thanks

ok thanks - it takes me to the "high quality media" folder under "transcoded media" and is 205MB large vs the original clip which was about 80MB.
so i assume it presumably did the conversion, and if so how come the clip window still shows it as an H.264 clip?
