Canon zr950

I just bought a canon ZR950. I have imovie HD on my ibook G4.
I just read the few threads on it... but... nothing works!
I've followed all the advices I was given in the "help" pages: disconnecting-reconnecting, set the date.
Imovie just does not seem to "see" my canon, and I have no idea why.. .Anyone ?

Did you ever get this resolved? I also have a canon ZR 950 and I can't get my Mac to recognized it. If you figured anything out, please share. Thanks.

  • Importing video from canon zr950

i can't import video from from canon zr950 as my macbook does not have a firewire port and the usb port does not recognize video camera. any other alternatives to importing the video from mini dv?

You really do need a firewire port on your computer to import DV.
One option would be to call the store manager of a nearby Apple Store, and politely ask if you can come in and use one of his computers that has firewire to capture your movie.
If your camcorder has a feature that let's you play it on TV through RCA cables (Red, White, and Yellow) or S-Video cable, then it is possible that you could capture using the ElGato EyeTV Hybrid. However, I have not tested this, and I would hesitate to tell you to spend $100+ if I am not sure. I may have time to test it next year some time. Even if it works, it will not be at the quality of the original DV. Would the quality difference by visible? That is another thing to test.

  • Canon ZR950 MiniDV Digital Camcorder

Does anyone use a Canon ZR950 MiniDV Digital Camcorder? I'm thinking of purchasing 3 for upcoming projects, as these are an ok price, but I'd rather spend a little more if these are junk. I'd be shooting sports action. Any advice on this camera or another that is good with fast motion would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you vey much R. Mitchell Fore. Those two suggestions for Sony fall right into my proce range where I can afford to buy 3. It seems that the jump from prices goes from $300 up to $1800+. Is there really a need for a $1800 camera at the begining of a business? With so many people owning HDTVs, is a smaller, cheaper camera going to cut it? I mean, just how much sharper is a wedding shot on a commercial/production grade camera used by the pros? Someone on this website to me to make a little money, be prepared to spend alot of money, and I concur, but I need to make some money to invest. But I don't want to short myself on equipment if the difference is really that great.

  • Canon ZR950 download to iMovieHD

I connected my new Canon ZR950 to my computer to download video into iMovie. The screen says "No Camera Attached". The import button fails to import. I have tried everything. I have checked my wires and have made sure my camera is ready for downloading. I was having trouble with my firewire port in my tower, so an Apple dealer told me to put the firewire into the back of my monitor. That still does not work. Should I take the tower into the Apple Store or should I try a hub as a last resort?

Canons as a rule do not like to share firewire ports. Be certain that the camera is the only thing attached to the Mac with a firewire.

  • Strange problem between Prem Pro CS3 and Canon ZR950

I bought CS3 and a Canon ZR950 thinking they were compatible. I ended up having to install Firewire and using the special 4-pin to 6-pin cord. It almost works.
According to Windows XP the drivers for both the "Canon DV Camcorder" and the "Texas Instruments OHCI Complaint IEEE 1394 Host Controller" are working properly. The firewire works properly with other devices. When I place the camcorder in PLAY and insert the cable the computer recognizes it as a camcorder and gives me choices of programs to use - Premiere Pro, Windows Movie Maker, Vegas Movie Studio, and Media Import 8.
I've tried uninstalling the camcorder drivers and when reattached they self install again "correctly". If I use Windows Movie Maker I get a warning "An unknown error has occured" and it stops working. If I use Vegas Movie Studio 9 I get an eror message saying "Microsoft DV Camera and VCR" could not be opened. If I use Roxio Media Import 8 I can get it to start the camcorder screen replay but none of the other computer program controls work and it's doesn' save anything or show up on the computer screen.
The only one that gets to the next step is Premiere Pro. It will actually open and wait for input. When I select Capture the window opens but nothing works until I go to the Settings tab, Device Control, Options button. There I select NTCS, Canon, Standard, and Auto detect. There is no specific choice for the ZR950. It only goes up to Z70. I've tried various settings but it doesn't make any difference.
Here's the strange thing. Regardless of whether I change the options or not, even if I only open up the Options menu and close it again, the controls on my computer screen will now control the camera for playback, foward, reverse, stop but it will only show up on the camera screen, not on my computer screen. In addition, there is no capture going on. In other words, I can use my computer as a giant controller to watch my videos on my camera screen, but that's it.
I suspect there is something wrong with the settings on the camera, but haven't gotten any word back from Canon yet. Any suggestions you can offer here would be appreciated.

Hu Simon...thanks for the answer but how i already writed in my post im on a macbook pro(internal audio card are out of the question)...
anyway are you suggesting that adobe doesnt work well with usb audio devices???
becouse for now i have to stick with it....

  • Anybody use Canon ZR950 with Mac Laptop and Final Cut Express

I just bought a Canon ZR950 Mini-DV camera and have been eyeing up a new MacBook Pro for editing video of my new baby (12 days to go). I'm wondering if anybody has had success with that model camera and FCE. Would I movie do the trick or is FCE that much better?
Also - would the 256mb video card model w/ the 15" display be okay?
Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks for your time!!!!

I have my old Mac listed as my current computer (I use it to record music as it does exactly what I need). I've been looking at the new MacBook pro - wouldn't that work?
If not - which new Mac should I buy?

  • FCE 4.0 won't capture from my canon zr950

hello everyone, and thanks for your time. i'm not sure if this is an issue with FCE/my computer, my camera or the firewire cable. i've captured footage with this computer and firewire cable before, but not with this camera (borrowing it from a friend). here's my issue:
when i go to capture footage, i get the spinning pinwheel of death. i let it run for over 20 minutes, and the capture screen never surfaced. it was just stuck. so i restarted the computer, and this time i did file -> capture before the camera was connected, to bring up the capture screen. after i did this, i connected the camera, and the same thing happened. on the camera screen, it says DV in, so the camera recognizes the connection. the computer knows something is attached, because as soon as i connect it i get the aforementioned spinning pinwheel, and when i disconnect the computer is once again able to function. any thoughts on what i should do? thanks again for your time!

Have you got the correct Easy Setup ......... FCE may need a different one from that used by your other cameras?
Take a look at this troubleshooting guide:-

  • Is Canon ZR950 compatible with iMovie HD 6.0.3

Sorry for the basic question but i want to be sure before i make this purchase from the Apple Store. The fact that the camcorder does not come with a firewire cable makes me more confused.
    Thks.

If it is miniDV, you are good to go! Most manufacturers don't include the firewire cable, but the Apple store would likely have one to sell you. They can be had online for about $10.00.

  • New iMovie '08 problems -- FireWire or new device issues?

Not sure if this is an iMovie '08 problem or an OS X problem. Here's the story --
Prior camcorder was a Panasonic, MiniDV format. Hooks up nicely with iMovie, via FireWire (400). I also have a WD My Book (500 GB) device to store the raw data (Event Library), which connects via FireWire (800). In the past, all three devices (Panasonic, My Book and MacBook Pro) all played nicely together.
Fast forward to now. Bought a new camcorder (problems with the Panasonic). It's a Canon ZR950 (MiniDV). With iMovie running, I first connect the WD device which is successfully mounted. I then hookup the new Canon and within a few seconds I get an error about a "device not cleanly shut down" (or words to that effect). Odd .... and when I try to connect to my new camcorder, I get a "no camera connected" error.
Rebooted, retried .... same issues. Another time I first connected the Canon and this time, iMovie successfully sees it. I go to connect the My Book and then the camcorder drops out.
So, it seems I can have only one FireWire device connected at a time, which is odd since I didn't have this issue with the old Panasonic.
    Help!

Interesting that you based your purchase on CR magazine because I too use it like a bible. However, when it comes to video cameras, I think they are way off base when not considering the editing side of video making that goes along with any camcorder. Who shoots video simply to plug it into a TV for playback?? If they were doing responsible reporting on this particular subject, they would also include computer capture and editing details in the reviews. Lots of the new format cams don't even work with Macs and the ones that do generally give lesser quality after conversion than what you can still get with tape. At least you made the right decision there!

  • "Capture recorded no frames"

First off, I'm doing this on PPro CS4 on an iMac 24" Core2Duo with Snow Leopard - IMO, much more stable than Windows.
My camera is a Canon ZR950 MiniDV Camcorder.  I have it hooked up to the iMac via FireWire.
I opened up the "Capture screen", I specify what I want to name the capture and that I want to use "Quicktime" capture mode (since HDV wouldn't work).
It connects to the camcorder just fine; when I rewind or play the tape, it reflects the action on the screen.  When I hit play on the camera, I have no preview on the screen and I get the error message that I put in the subject line.  Any suggestions?

Try capturing with the freeware version of Scenalyzer, ScenalyzerLive has a watermark as it is not for free.

  • How to use ans E\external camera as choice in ichat ?

I have a macbook pro with a built in isight. I've tried using two other cameras as video source with no luck. both are cannon mini viedo cameras, The first camera I needed to get a firewire adaptor for. from a dv port of a camera to the firewire port of the pro. The second from the dv port to the usb port of the pro. I go to avchat preferences/video but only get the isight as a choice. What am I missing ? Do I need to install drivers ?

    You're welcome, Joe.
I cannot find DV950 as a Canon model.
    (1) Perhaps you mean a Canon ZR950?
If so, according to the info on page 67 of the ZR950 Instructions Manual, you should be able to connect to the Firewire (iLink® / iEEE 1394) port on the camera.
More info about some "ZR" Canons: http://support.apple.com/kb/TA26556
Try the suggestions there or contact Canon, Inc to see if they have ideas that might help you.
    (2) If not, perhaps have a Panasonic PV-DV950?
If it is a Panasonic, according to the info on page 58 of the PV-DV950 Operating Instructions user manual, you should be able to connect to the Firewire (iLink® / iEEE 1394) port on the camera.
More info about "PV" Panasonics here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=113547
Try double clicking buttons to see if that improves function?
    (3) In either case, no additional drivers or software are needed. Read your manual for hints on how to use your camera as a video source. Concentrate on how to record directly to a VCR from your camcorder, etc.
Check for tape or head-saver operations. They may limit the functions you want. For example, Canons must be plugged into wall power. Some brands require that you remove tape for it to work. Some require that you leave the LCD view screen open in order for your camcorder to output its DV signal to Firewire. The manual will tell you.
If nothing else works, unless you are willing to use a different camcorder or computer, try an alternate connector such as those suggested in my previous response.

  • Slow motion blur

    Hey everyone,
I'm recording from my Canon ZR950 at 150 fps and when I reduce the speed to 25% the image is very blurry.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
    Thanks!

    150 fps?
This program will only work with standard frame rates -- 25 fps PAL and 29.97 fps NTSC. So you could be seeing an issue there.
And, as Paul says, it's likely you're seeing a hybrid preview because of it. (If so, you'll see a red line above the clip(s) on your timeline.) So rendering (by pressing Enter) will help.
But, before you do, you may want to right-click on your clip(s) on the timeline and select Frame Blend.
But no guarantees. I'm just not sure how this program will perform with such an unusual frame rate.

  • When capturing video; how do I get rid of the green lines at the bottom of the frame?

When capturing video; How do I get rid of the green lines at the bottom of the frame?

    s.haider
You have Canon ZR950 mini DV Camcorder, why not make a firewire connection and do DV data capture into the Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1 Capture Window?
Do you have any reference for what you are attempting to do or is this a creation of your own? Could you confirm what you describe as "just capturing video".
    a. From your information, you are doing Get Media/Webcam or WDM Device with the Capture Window showing the Capturing Device as "Dazzle DVD 100 Video Device". What type of connection are you making between the Canon ZR950 and the Dazzle DVD 100 and the computer?
    b. What exactly do you expect to be putting on the Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1 Timeline from this capture...DV AVI or something else?
Coming from the perspective of Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1 known issues, I would ask you to consider:
    a. Remove the check mark next to AutoAnalyzer in the Capture window. Even if you were doing this Capture the "usual way", that is highly recommended.
    b. Go to Edit Menu/Preferences/General, and compare your results with and without a check mark next to enable GPU playback. As a cross reference, please go to Edit Header/Effects/Video Effects and detemine if there is a category of Effects named GPU Effects. Do the same thing for Edit Header/Transitions/Video Transitions and determine if there is a category of Transitions named GPU Transitions.
And, the general drill for all users of Premiere Elements 8.0
    a. Are you working with the automatic Background Rendering and AutoAnalzyer Features turned Off?
See Premiere Elements workspace Edit Menu/Preferences/General for background rendering option and Elements Organizer workspace Edit Menu/Preferences/AutoAnalzyer Options for AutoAnalzyer options.
    b. Are you working from the 8.0.1 Update version of the program?
    Please consider.
We will be watching for the outcome.
    Thank you.

  • External Drive & Camera Conflict?

I just got FCE4 and Canon ZR950 last week. I have an iMAC with a MyBook external harddrive connected via the Firewire 800 port. When I connect my camera on the 400 Firewire port, FCE doesn't recognize it. If I disconnect the external drive, FCE will recognize the camera. Called Apple Support and she suggested I get a device (she wasn't sure exactly WHAT) that will allow both the drive and camera to be connected simultaneously. She thinks there is a bus conflict. Is there a way to use both at the same time without such a device, and if not, exactly what kind of device do I need? Also, I looked at the drive, and there isn't a way to daisy-chain the camera to the drive.

Connect the camera to your iMac. In FCE>System Settings, set your internal drive as your Scratch Disk. Then capture your footage.
Disconnect the camera and connect your MyBook. It's probably simplest to drag your whole Capture Scratch folder to the external drive. Then drag the original files from the internal drive to the Trash and empty the trash.
When you next open the project, you'll need to reconnect your media by showing FCE the location of the Capture Scratch folder you copied to your external drive. I don't think you need to change the Scratch Disk in FCE's System Settings, but I'm not sure.
