Canopus ADVC110 Hi8 capture

Hi,
I have a G10 Canon HI8 camcorder. After reading on this forum about capturing analog tapes onto FCP, I purchased a Canopus ADVC110 for $260 + shipping. My FCP does see the picture and captures, but no color and no sound! Only in black and white and soundless.
Any help is appreciated..
Many thanks

Hi Al,
Thanks for the tip. We can get audio as well as visual with colors now, but the captioned footage is intermittently flickery although it looks fine on the camcorder. It seems like the box is not converting properly. Settings are absolutely correct and checked many times. Any tips?
Many thanks

  • Capturing through Canopus ADVC110

    Hi
I'm trying to capture some DV Footage to Final Cut. I'm trying to capture through a Canopus ADVC110. Whenever I click Capture Now and error message comes up stating that there is no video present. Device control works fine however, and I can see the timecode meter moving in FCP so I know that there is communication going on. Also I can output from FCP into the deck through the Canopus no problem.
Now I can plug in to the rear Firewire port on the G5 and capture. However I would really rather capture through the Canopus, as the tower is in the basement in a machine room. So it would be much easier if I could just plug into the Canopus instead of having to trek downstairs if I need to change a tape or something.
Has anyone ever experienced this before?

Another editor is using the Canopus right now, but IIRC, there was one switch that was set differently than the others.
I do believe you have to use Non-controllable device when the Canopus is inbetween your deck and the mac. (can't remember offhand)...maybe not.
I believe System Profile should see the Canopus. What other FW devices are plugged in (i.e. the 'unknown device') If you have more than one FW device, it may be causing conflicts, being on the same FW bus.
I'm confused about something. You said the tower is downstairs. Where is the deck?...and what kind is it? Please outline more specifically where your equipment is, how it's routed, what type it is.
    I see you're on OS 10.4.1 w/FCP 5.1.4...what version of QT?

  • Canopus ADVC110 is giving me Black and White picture which is misaligned

Very new to Analogue to Digital converting so please forgive ignorance!
I am in the UK. I have Canopus ADVC110 is giving me black and white pictures which is misaligned and shows specked picture noise. I see bottom on one frame and top of another with a black line ("frame" rebate?) running through the middle of the monitor screen in iMovie.
I have leads from my camera plugged into the front of box and firewire out of the back into MacBook Pro running iMovieHD v6.0.3.
I have set the dip switches to both PAL and NTSC just in case I got the output from my camera wrong (even tho' says Pal on it).
In iMovie I choose DV as video format and it picks 29.97 fps automatically. iMovie shows me the capture is NTSC from the Canopus box.
The Canopus website has poor support so I am at Discussions mercy!

As you're in the UK, you MUST use the 'PAL' setting, and choose a new Project in iMovie to be 'PAL' ..that's 25 frames per second.
If you do that, your import will be OK, instead of of shifted and black-&-white.
Work with Pal throughout (25fps) and you'll be OK. Set iMovie's Preferences to PAL 25fps, then Quit iMovie and restart it, to force all future Projects to be PAL 25 fps.
Do the same, too, for iDVD if you're going to use that to burn DVDs after you've edited your movies.

  • Canopus ADVC110 with Yosemite

July 2012 I successfully used a Canopus ADVC110 analog to digital converter to transfer VHS tapes from a VCR to my MacBook. My OS and iMovie were the then current versions. I set out to transfer more VHS tapes using Yosemite and the latest version of iMovie without success. i have noted that iMovie now only accepts input from camcorders which may be part of the problem. However when I try to use Image Capture it does not show the ADVC110 as an external connected device. Can anyone help?

What do you mean by your explanation, don't follow. Have Canopus ADVC110 connected to iMac w/ Yosemite 10.10.2 but iMovie doesn't list the device as an option under cameras from wich to import.

  • Canopus ADVC110 and PE2

My Pyro AV link that I used for years with PE2 got taken out by a lightning strike to the house.  Just got a Canopus ADVC110 to replace it.  I can not get it to work with PE2.  Called Canopus tech support and they said the ADVC110 is not made for digital input signals?  Yet it works fine with Ulead that is also on my PC.  He suggested that I connect my digital movie camera (Canon Optura 20) directly to my PC and use PE2.  What are my best options?  Will a newer version of PE work with the ADVC110 and my Canon.  I also covert some old VHS tapes as well.
    Thanks.

The Canopus ADVC is an excellent DV bridge that should work fine with Premiere Elements.
It should work just like the ADS Pyro. You just plug your camcorder into it and then FireWire that into your computer. Although you can't control the camcorder with your computer, you can capture video ported from the camcorder or any other AV source into it.
If you just can't get it working and you can't get support from Canopus, you might try posting to the Muvipix forum. Those guys are some of the most knowledgeable video folks on the web. It's likely at least one can offer you guidance.

  • Trouble AE11 and Canopus ADVC110

I bought a Canopus ADVC110 capture device that arrived last night and after spending a full day, can't get Adobe Elements 11 to recognize this device. I bought the ADVC110 for the sole purpose of converting priceless old VHS tapes to DVD.  Everything I read before i made the purchase indicated ADVC110 works with Adobe Elements 11.   i have plenty of disc space and processing horsepower but capture device is not in the list of "Add Media" options.  It appears you piggy back on the DV camcorder option but i get the following error message: "Your current camera setting is different from your project settings...."  I’ve done everything I can think of so I’m  reaching out for help. Windows 7 OS.  is there an video Obi Wan out there that can help this Padawan

YOU ROCK A.T. Romano…PROBLEM SOLVED! (((user error as usual))) Just as you suspected, had settings at  NTSC AVCHD Full HD 1080i30, great for new video projects with my JVC HM-150U video camera but not so good trying to capture the 1986 family reunion coming off VHS  tape.
Thanks for the additional info.  My overall experience level is probably slightly better than the average amateur, which might sound odd with the dumb question i  posted. I did many projects working with PrE 4 on another 32 bit computer but this is the first capture job I’ve attempted in several years. PrE 4 didn't want to work with the new 64bit Windows 7 PC but the upgrade to PrE 11 fixed that.  And having this group to communicate with,, well,, it just doesn't get any better for someone like me - THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.
Last question - do you (anyone) have an opinion as to the difference in quality between old VHS captured with the Canopus ADVC 300 vs ADVC 110?  I bought ADVC 110 before i learned there was a 300.  If the difference working with old VHS tapes in particular is significant, it’s worth it to me to upgrade even though i just bought ADVC 110. I probably have ~250 hours of old VHS to eventually work thru.

  • Using Canopus advc110 to display on a TV

Can I use my Canopus advc110 to connect my Macbook Pro to my TV. I would like to be able to show iPhoto slide shows on my TV, but have not yet figured out how to do it. I have the advc110 connected with firewire. I have the RYW cables connected to the output in the back of the advc110 and the other ends connected to the input in the TV. Nothing. Is what I am trying to do impossible? Thanks

iCloud does not include a feature like the old MobileMe Gallery.
Photo Stream does work on the AppleTV, but will only show the last 1000 photos taken and synced to iCloud. You can't create user-defined galleries.
Until June 30th 2012 (when MobileMe closes down), you can still access your MobileMe Galleries, by logging in using your [email protected] MobileMe AppleID and password. That still works for now.
Unfortunately, I don't think there is a long-term solution for your particular usage.

  • Imac and canopus advc110 can you out put to a monitor

I am new to this apple stuff and have after some pro advice settled for a canopus advc110 to go with my imac, i am now struggling with the settings to output to a monitor please help!!!!!

    Hi
This works greatly with my Canopus ADVC 300.
I connect box to Mac via FireWire
My Box has one in and one out analog side. Connect Out with RCA-connectors to
    Monitor RGB (RCA-In) or via a SCART-plug.
In FinalCut when starting up it should identify the "Camera/A/D-box" (External A/V) and not ask for it
When FCE/P is up and running. Select View Menu from top Row.
Down this select "External Video" -> All frames
If this doesn't work Select next line "Refresh A/V Devices" then "External Video" -> All frames
    This works for me.
Read Manual of Your Canopus ADVC-110 if ther is any Dip-Switch settings needed
    (Not same on ADVC-300 Sorry)
    Yours Bengt W

  • Problem recording video with canopus advc110

I am trying to record video from a Hitachi KP-M2RN-S3 camera connected through a Canopus ADVC110 to a firewire port in a brand new Mac Mini.  I can see and record video from the camera in iMovie; in QuickTime, I can see/select the ADVC110 input, but do not receive any video.  The preview screen remains black, and if I hit the record button then stop the recording I receive a message that no data was received.  I can record in QuickTime from other cameras connected to the same Mini (two different Stingray cameras).  I would really like to record from the Hitachi in QuickTime as well and am willing to upgrade to QuickTime Pro if that would fix the problem.

  • What am I missing here: Canopus ADVC110 Footage vs. CS6?

My church uses the subject Canopus device to capture DV (avi) footage to hard disk.  I've successfully edited this footage from this workflow for years in CS4 and CS5 (skipped 5.5).  When CS6 arrived, I attempted to use it, but quickly switched back to CS5 due to the issue I am about to describe.  I want to finally switch over to CS6 now (and to CC soon, I hope), so I very much want to understand what the issue is with CS6.  Here's the issue:
I've narrowed this down to the original footage AVI files captured from the Canopus. As soon as PP begins to conform the footage, it hangs for a very long time.  Initially, the small preview thumb displays an image.  The conforming progress bar displays (but no progress). But the monitor displays the footage as offline. During this time, any click in the PP window yields a "(not responding)" suffix in the title bar. Eventually, given enough time, the video footage appears and scrubs, but without audio, the audio waveform, and with no conforming progress bar.  There are no error messages during this time.  Given the time consumed and lack of audio, I have not proceeded any further in the edit.
I suspect this is a x64 codec issue with the Canopus.  Does anyone have experience with this workflow and this problem?  Is the solution software or hardware?  Do I need to replace the Canopus?  If so, I need recommendations please.
    Thank you very much.

New info: I do have another (HP z400, WIN7 x64) machine with CS6 that exhibits similar behavoir as the other with the Canopus footage.  My user on this one is in the Admin user group.  I don't get the "not responding" suffix in the title bar.  But the conforming progress bar does not move.  When I go to close PP, i get this message:
"Metadata writing in progress. Are you sure you want to exit?"
When I click yes, the "not responding" suffix appears and I have to force close PP.  The clip apparently does not have any metadata - at least none appear in the Metadata tab in PP.  Perhaps this is a significant clue.
Also, we use Windows Movie Maker to capture the footage to DV avi.  Low tech, I know.

  • Is Mavericks OS compatible with the Canopus ADVC110 encoder?

    Hi,
My MacBook Pro is 4 yrs old, running 10.6.8.  I bought it primarily for editing my home videos and audio recordings that I made 30 years ago when our kids were young.  These are (analog) videotapes, so at the same time, I bought a Canopus ADVC110 encoder, an amazing device.  If I upgrade to Mavericks, will the encoder continue to work?
I’m encountering a few on-line sites that no longer support 10.6.8, but I’ll live without them before I give up the encoder.

Given that Grass Valley still exists, I'd suggest contacting them directly for an answer.

  • Problems importing VHS video via Canopus ADVC110

OK, I can't figure out how best to do this. I picked up a Canopus ADVC110 converter box to aid in digitizing a stack of VHS tapes. Yesterday I performed a short (1 minute) trial run and was unsatisfied with the results.
I imported the footage into iMovie '08, then tried burning a DVD of the clip iDVD. The result looked noticeably worse than the original tape. I'd settle for near quality, but this showed heavy compression, darker and grainier image, etc. I tried burning both "medium" and "large" versions that were sent to the Media Browser. Same result. I even tried exporting the project as a Quicktime DV stream and burning a DVD using Toast Titanium 9. No difference.
Now, the video preview inside iMovie seems to look OK, but then again it's hard to compare what I'm seeing there with the finished DVD video that I watch on my 13" television. I'm thinking that something is going haywire in the export and DVD-burning phase, though I may be way off on that one.
In any case, I'd love to hear from anyone who is attempting to do similar transfers and how they achieved the best-looking results. I'm merely trying to whittle down my collection of VHS tapes, but if the transfer quality can't be improved I'm kind of stuck...
Oh, I also own FCP Express 4, and am wondering if that might produce a better import? I have no idea.
Any advice or comments from past experience would be much appreciated.
    Thank you,
    David

I imported the footage into iMovie '08, then tried burning a DVD
Use iMovie 06 not iMovie 08.
For interlaced video such as DV and 1080i HDV, iMovie 08 now uses single-field processing. This means every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage.
If your primary workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, iMovie '06 is better suited. Your movie will arrive at iDVD in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels aspect ratio, and original quality. If you share your movie from iMovie '08, it gets re-rendered at 640x480 or less, and then iDVD upscales it back to 720x480. The end result is obviously not as good.
iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 is the best combination. Use Professional Quality in iDVD 08.
When I use iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 I get excellent results.
I use the Canopus ADVC300 because it comes with a nice Macintosh application that works flawlessly with iMovie 06. The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material.
The Web site below has a good comparison of Apple video products.
    http://www.geethree.com/slick/imovie8.html
iMovie 06 is a free download to iLife 08 owners. (THEY WANT YOU TO HAVE IT!)

  • Canopus ADVC110 to 15" macbook pro retina 2013 Model

    Hai All,
How can i connect Canopus ADVC110 to 15" macbook pro retina 2013 Model

    Same doubt here,
Theoretically you could use a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter from Apple.
The remaining question is: will it provide enougth energy to power the ADVC110 unit?

  • Canopus ADVC110 - No Audio When Importing into Imovie 6

I'm trying to import a vhs video tape from a vcr through the canopus ADVC110 into imovie. The video comes over fine, but there is no audio. I've checked the connections and they all look correct. Any ideas?

I am having the exact same problem except I am using iMovie HD 5.0.2. It is definetly not my camcorder because I tried connnecting other audio sources to the converter. No audio is recognized by iMovie. I tried "cycling the power" opening and quitting GarageBand and deselecting ouput to camcorder. Nothing seems to work. Please help!!

  • Capturing from Beta SP via Canopus ADVC110 into FCP HD - HELP!

please help - desperately trying to capture into FCP HD using DV PAL 48 preset. I have BNCtoRCA adapter out of the beta SP video out going into the RVC video in of the canopus converter. Then 4 pin firewire out of the converter into my firewire 400 port. Have switched to all the correct relevant settings on the bottom of the canopus ...... but ... in my log & capture window the video appears to have no reference. i.e. black & white, scrambled. Any ideas?

Unfortunately I am sure... very confusing because you're right - that's exactly what it looks like the problem is! Sound is coming in scrambled also. If I try to capture it for longer than a couple of seconds I get an error saying there is a "problem with the source tape" Have tried every combination with the switches on the canopus box, changed cables, everything I can think of.
