Canopus converter

Hi:
I'm trying to capture some analog video from one of my DVDs. I'm using the Canopus ADVC110
and FCP 6. But, I'm having trouble capturing. I see only a black and white video with horizontal lines running through it, even when the video is playing.
I'm coming in through a firewire cable. I'm using uncontrolled devise as input and firewire basic as my setup. I think this should work, but It's not happening for me.
Any thoughts?
Schuney

This usually happens when you didn't select the right mode on the Canopus..
usually you've got to switch by yourself when capturing. Going back from capturing to editing is usually no problem.
There is only one button on it, so hit him once
Also you could check the jumper configuration on the back..
Hope this will help.

  • In need of last ditch advice (upgrade to HC96 or buy Canopus converter?!)

    Hi all,
    Need the community's advice here...
Bought the Sony HC48 model not knowing it lacked the A/V in... too late to return for a refund to JR.com... the ability to transfer analog to digital is very important to me, so here's the question...
    in your opinion, should I:
    a) hold onto the HC48 and use it for its primary camcorder purpose to shoot video, and supplement that with a Canopus converter (ADVC 55, 110, or 300) for my analog to digital conversion needs... OR...
    b) exchange the HC48 and upgrade to the HC96 (paying the difference), which I can use as both a camcorder and a digital pass through mechanism, thus eliminating the need for an external converter...
I would greatly appreciate any feedback. Thank you in advance and have a great weekend everyone!
    Regards,
    Joe

It's really your call, as only you know the financial implications of either course!
The Canopus ADVC110 works perfectly for me - I still use an analogue video camera - and is IMO the best value for money of the three.
Hang on: I just checked the specs of that camera, and it says that it includes:
    i.LINK® DV Interface1
A digital high-speed bi-directional interface which provides Audio/Video communication between two compatible devices. This connection allows for pure digital transfer between devices equipped with an IEEE1394 interface, such as camcorders, digital VTRs, capture cards and PCs.
iLink is Sony's name for Firewire. If this is a digital camera you are good to go!
You will probably find that it actually connects to your Mac through the Handycam Station. But it is likely that they 'forgot' to include the required firewire cable, but that you can get in any camera store.

  • What can a Canopus converter do?

Will something like the Canopus ADVC-110 have any advantage over my Panasonic DVX video camera in terms of feeding video from the Mac to my monitor (FCP to FW to camera to S-video)?
Specifically, I'd like to be able to see my exported QT clips (using QT Player or whatever) on the monitor. But I'm guessing that FCP is unique in sending the video signal out the FW port, and if you're not using FCP you don't have a signal there no matter what you use. Anyone know?
    Thanks.
    Oh, the Canopus is this:

With Canopus converter you can monitor both video formats:
    NTSC: 720x480 @ 29.97fps
    PAL/SECAM: 720x576 @ 25fps
By the way, look the original manufacturer specifications, I think it's more complete.

  • Using the capture with the canopus converter

The other day I was able to capture an dvd to it's end.  Today I'm working with another old dvd that I want to capture in CS4 however, it quits 18 mintutes into the capturing stating max amount has been captured. I think I may have my set points wrong. Can someone send me a visual of how these are suppose to look if the dvd is over an hour long. I would so appreciate it!

    >save anything before I went into my computer and chose NTFS
Using the instructions at the Microsoft link I posted, I have converted a half a dozen drives from FAT32 to NTFS and have had ZERO problem with data loss or corruption
That is, of course, based on exactly following the Microsoft instructions
You may have a drive with a hardware failure, if you are 100% sure you exactly followed the Microsoft instructions
    >copy files from one drive to the other. Copy and past?
No, copy paste is when you are inside something like a word processor
Using Windows Explorer you click and "drag and drop" a file (or folder) from one location to another
    >any hope to get all that information back if they reformat it?
I don't know you, but it SEEMS you don't know much about computers
When you format a drive, everything is lost

  • Is there software to preview input from Canopus converter?

I would like to view the input from a converted Videotape ... for quality and positioning ... without importing it into iMovie. (I can't see the video unless I import it and I assume that is the way iMovie is supposed to work.)
I tried "Video Viewer" but, although it recognized that I had the ADVC-110 converter connected, it did not display any video when I played the tape.
Is there any other software that works?

Patricia, that is not normal behaviour, and would prevent 'selective imports' into iMovie. You should be able to start and stop and re-start the actual import, by pressing either the import button or the pause button.
I can think of two real-life examples (drawn from my life that is!): half your holiday is on one camera tape, the other half on another. You obviously only want only one iMovie project, so you pause the import while you change the tape in the camera.
You are walking back from the beach/park to your car parked a mile away, which takes 15 minutes. When you look at the marvelous footage you shot in the park/on the beach, you find that you have 15 minutes of closeups of your feet moving on the pavement because you forgot to switch your camera off before you slung it over your shoulder! Not a lot of point in importing 4GB worth of *p only to have to delete it again!
I suggest you delete iMovie's plist file and repair permissions, then try again.

  • Importation problem using Canopus-55 DV converter

I bought my mac with Panther and upgraded it recently to Tiger. Initially, I had no problem importing HI8 video from a 8 year old sony camera (following Tiger upgrade). I have created 9 DVD of family video without any problems with the little Canopus converter. I have just ugraded to iLife '06 and now importation (both sound and video) is very jerky. The status light from the converter flickers all the time back to red which was never happening before. I have 30 Gb left on my hard disk so I don't think it is the issue.
    Help/suggestion most welcome thank you.

I also forgot to say that this chronic audio/video hiccuping also happens just watching the video on the iMac without actually importing it...hence, most likely no a problem of slow HD...

  • Converting analog hi8 tapes into FCE using canopus

I am trying to convert some old home movies (HI8) using a canopus converter (ADVC110).  When I play the move clip back in FCE - the image is very blurred/distorted.  Am I doing something wrong, or is this to be expected given the tape format and converter I'm using?

    Welcome to the forum.
Here are some things to check. The video should not be "very blurred/distorted".
Does the video look sharp when you connect your Hi8 camera directly to your TV? (Check this because the problem could be degraded tapes.)
Are you using good quality cables that are in good condition? Both from your camera to the ADVC and the ADVC to your Mac.
What are the exact DIP switch settings on your ADVC? In North America, all the DIP switches should be OFF (except #2 which could be on if you want the ADVC to default to Analog-IN when you power up.) Note: only change the DIP switches when the ADVC is disconnected from power. And don't connect or disconnect the firewire cable unless both your ADVC and your Mac are disconnected from power (not just shut down).
What FCE Easy Setup are you using?
Have you used the ADVC before with good results? Or is this the first time you are using the ADVC? If so, did you get it new or used?

  • Digital Video Converter

i'm a little confused about the difference between 'apple video adapter'
    http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore.woa/6224040/wo/WB5d0bwOOsXt2cAsU qR1RKWHU7b/3.0.19.1.0.8.25.7.11.5.3
and a digital video converter -
    http://www.canopus.com/products/ADVC110/index.php
i don’t want to mirror my ibooks monitor, but create an enlarged preview screen in fce
    can my ibook do this?
i also have another problem. The Canopus converter uses firewire, and i only have one firewire port.
To add, i want to upgrade from a usb2 external hard drive to a firewire! just because i've recently read that it will work better as a scratch disk.
i seem to have too many devises and not enough ports.

    About the first question:
    - the Apple Video Adapter allows to use an external TV screen in place of your iBook screen. I have it but never use it since my video (iMac 20") is far better than a TV screen.
    - a Digital Video Converter, instead, converts DV video into analog video and viceversa. In your case you could plug the DV end (firewire) to your iBook and the analog end to a TV set, and use it to "Print to Video" the Canvas of FCE during editing or previewing.
The main difference is that in the 1st case all you do on the iBook appears in the TV screen, in the 2nd case only the canvas output of FCE (or iMovie if needed).
To edit video use the 2nd solution only; this has the advantage to show in real time, during editing, exactly the final result of your movie (colors, interlacing problems, etc.).
You might have another option: most digital camcorders include a video converter and can be used in place of a stand alone Video Converter; if your digital camcorder allows it, use it in place of the Video Converter.
About your second question, if you switch to a firewire external drive you should be able to daisy chain your camcorder (or digital video converter) to the external drive, so the single firewire port on the iBook should be enough. Just be careful, I know some combinations of camcorders/hard drives don't work well together when daisy chained... Not my direct experience, but I read it in these discussions.

  • Capturing VHS with converter?

When using my Canopus converter (FireWire) to capture to FCPX the clips are auto split into like 30 second (not sure how long) clips which does not make sense for archiving these old projects. Is there a setting to make it continuous?

Any advantage to QTP7 over using iMovie 11 which is my current workaround---IM captures as one long clip whic is my preference.
So I guess I assumed my converter box (Canopus C110) created some kind of time code that FCPX would understand---
Thanks so much for your time!

  • Widescreen analogue video converted A-D has bars top and bottom?

I have converted a 16:9 video on VHS tape to PAL DV using a Canopus converter.
This creates a widescreen image with black bars top and bottom in the PAL 4:3 frame and when played on a widescreen TV the 16:9 image occupies the central portion of the screen with black bars all round.  (It looks OK on a 4:3 CRT as it fills the width of the screen with just bars above and below.)
Ideally I would like the image to fill the 16:9 TV screen. Using the zoom control on the TV is not an answer as it zooms too much and I lose parts of the picture and get unnecessary degradation.
Is there a reasonably simple solution using FCP 7 or its companion apps?
    I also have FCP X  .  .  .  .  though I don't know whether that helps!

The Canopus shouldn't be converting to letterbox 4:3 on it's own. If the video was 16:9 going in, why wouldn't it be 16:9 going out? A 4:3 aspect program will naturally have a pillarbox on a 16:9 monitor. Even if it has letterbox bars to begin with.
And if you take it into FCP, what aspect appears there?

  • 2 questions: Convert analog video AV- USB Converter; Good TV Tuner For IMac

    1) I need to convert analog video tapes onto my Mac. What's a good AV to USB converter?
    2) I'd like to take advantage of my 24" screen and occasionally watch TV on my Mac. What's a good TV tuner?
    Thanks.

Most recommend the Canopus converter, but it is $100-200. I was curious if the analog to digital tv converters available for $10 with the $40 govt coupon would serve the same purpose. I don't know why it wouldn't, but I haven't seen one. I'm going to try to borrow from a friend and see.
Otherwise you can borrow someone's Sony Digital8 to use to play Hi8 and it works as a converter (some models don't do Hi8 playback). This worked for me, but I was afraid I would wear out the "eject' on my friends Digital8 bc I have 60 tapes to transfer.
Other option is to play on old Hi8 thru a miniDV camcorder, used as a converter. My Canon zr500 miniDv doesn't seem to have that option.
I may try to use my Presidian dvr from Radio Shack as a pass thru converter. I haven't tried it yet either, but I think it might be yet another option. If anyone knows how to do any of these, please reply. It seems the tv converter should work and I'll get one if it does.

  • Canopus Conveters

Recently a user recommended a Canopus 300 converter to input my VHS tapes to Imovie and then convert them to DVD. I was told this should give me an excellent quality DVD.
I was hoping someone could help a bit further.
When I was looking at the Canopus Converters there are several options and I'm wondering why I should buy one over the other.
There is a Canopus 55 for about $160.00 I think, the 300 is about $425.00 and there was a 1000 for like $1200.00.
Is there any reason I should not buy the 55? Most of the reviews were positive and said it gave good results. I would be willing to spend the $425.00 if were necessary but why spend money if I don't need to.
My hope is to take all my old VHS tapes/home movies and get them to DVD's with the best possible image quality.
    Any input would be helpful
One other thing. If a person were to say, start a small business of converting VHS tapes to DVD, is the Canopus Converter the way to go? Here again, is the 300 or 1000 going to be a whole lot better than the 55? I'm considering offering this to family and friends(for a very small fee) but I want to make sure they are getting a good quality product in the end.
Thanks in advance for your help!

I use the Canopus ADVC110. Works a treat.
(Could be wrong, but I think that is the second-cheapest model!)

  • Converting Analogue Video to Mac....HELP!!!

Not sure where to post but hopefully I'll find some help here...
I want to convert some old family videos (on VHS) onto DVD but edit them first. I'm using a MacBook (the late 2008 aluminum model), and I have iMovie '08 installed. So, the process (as I understand it...) is to convert the old analogue video format into digital and import into my Mac (iMovie if possible), edit, and then burn to DVD.
Could somebody tell me if this is correct -- I have to buy 1) an analogue to digital video convertor, and 2) a SCART to Phono cable (which plugs one end into the VHS player and the other end into the convertor). And then the convertor plugs into my Mac via USB?
Also, could you please let me know if I could use iMovie to import the videos and to edit? (is it supported etc...),
And if possible could someone please recommend some analogue-digital video convertors as lots that I've looked at so far don't specify whether they are supported by Mac or not....
THANK YOU for your help, your feedback is much appreciated!!!
    Regards

Yep, you are completely on the right track!
I use a Canopus ADVC110 for that purpose (just to mention one example), which is connected to the video player by a SCART to Phono (or is it RCA?) cable with the usual three cables: yellow for the video and red/white for the audio. The Canopus is connected to the Mac via firewire (essential, NOT USB) and I import into iMovie (in my case iMovie 6, but it matters little) where it can be edited as normal and then passed to iDVD for burning.
please recommend some analogue-digital video convertors as lots that I've looked at so far don't specify whether they are supported by Mac or not....
See above! I am not sure they need to state that, there is no extra software involved, just the same digital signal as you would get from a digital camera. The Canopus converts the analogue signal to a digital DV stream which is what iMovie prefers.

  • Capturing from Beta SP via Canopus ADVC110 into FCP HD - HELP!

please help - desperately trying to capture into FCP HD using DV PAL 48 preset. I have BNCtoRCA adapter out of the beta SP video out going into the RVC video in of the canopus converter. Then 4 pin firewire out of the converter into my firewire 400 port. Have switched to all the correct relevant settings on the bottom of the canopus ...... but ... in my log & capture window the video appears to have no reference. i.e. black & white, scrambled. Any ideas?

Unfortunately I am sure... very confusing because you're right - that's exactly what it looks like the problem is! Sound is coming in scrambled also. If I try to capture it for longer than a couple of seconds I get an error saying there is a "problem with the source tape" Have tried every combination with the switches on the canopus box, changed cables, everything I can think of.

  • Canopus advc100 advice

    hi,
need help with my canopus converter.
its my first time using it,have connected it to final cut 5 and the log and capture window is recognising the converter but no picture is coming through from video recorder.
    anyone that can help please????

I see you are in the UK, so you need to set the swtiches on the bottom to PAl. I think the first and second switches from the left are the ones you need to set. As Jerry said, read the maual ... there's not much to it
Make sure all your connections are right: Out from your VCR, In to the Canopus with the analog cables and FW from the Canopus to the puter. If you are using an external Hard drive, plug the Canopus into the drive, the drive into the puter
When you turn the Canopus on, at the front of the box there will be a blue light; make sure the one on the left is glowing; thats for take a signal FROM the VCR. If the light is glowing on the right, that is going IN to the VCR. To change that, press the big silver button above those lamps
I would hook up the Canopus and the VCR and have them turned on before you power up the puter and FC. In FC, set your A/V settings for non-controllable device and use Capture Now to capture
