Canoscan 8600f

Updated to Leopard now scanner CANONSCAN 8600F (which worked fine before) won't copy, and will only scan one page before message recieved cannot communicate with scanner! Any ideas plse?
I haven't found the CANON website much help!

If you have used an older driver version, or did an upgrade from 10.4, then the driver will need to be removed and the latest version installed.
Open Finder and select the HD > Library > Image Capture > TWAIN Data Sources. Delete the 8600F.ds file.
Then navigate to Applications and trash the CanoScan Toolbox application.
Empty the Trash and then download the version 12.13.0 scanner driver and install.
Once that install is complete, open Image Capture or Preview and see if you can scan multiple pages without error.

  • Cannot scan multiple slides from Canoscan 8600F

In the past when I had a PC I was able to scan multiple color slides  (using the multiple slide adapter), but on my Mac when I installed the Canoscan driver and software, I used Image Capture to scan. Here's what the right side of Image Capture shows:
    Kind: Color
Resolution: 75 dpi (I set this low because it is just for web and computer viewing)
    Use Custom Size: Letter size
Scan to: Desktop (I have hundreds of slides so is it better to scan to a specific folder? I do not want to mix these scanned photos with my Pictures)
    Name: Scan 1,2 etc.
    Format: JPEG
    Detect Separate Images selected.
The result of the scan shows one image of the film holder and four blackened slides, with no details. No individual slides shown.
    What happened?

It's best to scan to a folder on the Desktop so you can keep them together and organized.
You must set the source as  "Color Positive Film".
Image Capture with Mt. Lion (and maybe Lion)  does not have that slide or transparency setting option.
Use the CanoScan application for slide scanning because it will automatically select each of the 4 slides on the platten and save them as individual images. The CanoSdan Toolbox will do the same.
You can get the latest scanner drivers and CanoScan software here:  Canon U.S.A. : Support & Drivers : CanoScan 8600F for OS systems up to Mt. Lion.
I'd reinstall the drivers and the software and give it a try again both with Image Capture and with CanoScan.
NOTE:  I've gotten what looks like some roller smudges on the underside of the glass platten.  Looks like some of the smudges that I can wipe off the top side when I get them but they are underneath. I haven't noticed any problem with the scans due to them, however.  Have you gotten anything similar?

  • HT6114 My CanoScan 8600F no longer works with Mavericks- No drivers available from Canon

My CanoScan 8600F no longer works with Mavericks upgrade.  Canon does not offer new drivers.

The Canoscan Toolbox works with Mavericks to scan, copy, etc.
If you have Photoshop or Photoshop Elements the drivers can be installed so one can scan from within those applications.
All the necessary software (CanoScan Toolbox 5.0.1.2 Installer) can be obtained from the Canon site.
And, as Eustace mentioned, Vuescan works.

  • Elements 9 not recognising Canoscan 8600f

I'm running Elements 9.0 on Lion.
    downloaded via App Store
The application is working in every way except I can't see the Canoscan 8600F via FILE / IMPORT
I can import from the Canoscan 8600F via preview in the finder.
    thanks in advance,
    Rob

Hi Barbara, thanks for this speedy response.
However I don't have a Adobe Photoshop Elements 9  folder, I have the application only.
But I have a Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 folder which came with the Canoscan back in 2006.
So my concern is, do you have any idea if my Mac needs the Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 folder to run Elements 9.0 ?
I'm hesitant to delete and lose this app.
And not sure how much you know of the App Store, (maybe someone else can help)  but can I re-download this if I decide to totally delete Elements 9.0 and start again ?
Also I've downloaded a trial of Vuescan and that also sees the scanner
    hope this makes sense.
    cheers,
    Rob

  • Where can I locate the folder with drivers for my CanoScan 8600F scanner

This is a cross post - someone else had a similar problem but none of the answers work
I have a similar problem. My CanoScan 8600F works on my iBook running Leopard but on the iMac I get the message driver not found. I have talked with Canon, Mac Support and a friend who was a Mac Tech at one time. I have reinstalled the scanner. I have gone to the Canon site to download the latest drivers. And I have copied one of the folders from my laptop to the iMac but it apparently doesn't have the drivers. Main question I have now is where on the iMac are the drivers located?
ScanGear has a place to choose a source but the source given is only my HP All in One. I was told to uninstall that on my iMac which I did but the source still doesn't give my Canon scanner. I probably have screwed up many other things trying to get rid of other items - Canon told me to get rid of Epson scanner info (I don't use an Epson so I did that) No matter what I have tried I cannot get the scanner to work with my iBook! At this point, worst case is to use the iBook to scan and then transfer the scanned files to my desktop. A bit humbug, that!

The problem was with the cano-scan toolbox which I never got working right. But I also have Canon Image Capture and scanner works fine from that program.

  • Canon scanner (Canoscan 8600F series) will not work after OS upgrade.

I used the scanner when when it was 10.6 just fine and 10.7 but as soon as I upgraded it to 10.8, it wouldn't.  Officially the website supports up to 10.6.  I don't know how it worked on 10.7.  Now, it doesn't even recognize the scanner.
One thing was I did wipe out the drive and re-install the OS because OS upgrades would perform better.  Trying to re-installing the older drivers don't help.

First, Canon (and a few other printer and scanner) drivers are distributed via Apple's software updates.
Then, 10.8.2 requires many if not most apps and drivers to be updated. If you just upgraded to 10.8.2, the newest drivers should be included, otherwise they should show up once you run Software Update.
Alternatively, you can check http://support.apple.com/downloads/ for the latest and greatest.
However, it appears that your scanner is not (yet?) supported in 10.8.2. Check here and follow the link there: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669#canon - your scanner is not listed.
Note that it's Canon's job to provide the drivers, Apple only helps distributing them. So, you may want to contact Canon and ask them, then sit and wait... sorry...

  • Problem with interface between Photoshop and CanoScan 9000f, mark II

I have just upgraded my Mac to OS X 10.9.1, Photoshop to CC, and purchased the CanoScan 9000F, mark II.  I had the CanoScan 8600F previously which came 8+ years ago with Elements 4 but now all this is obsolete with the current software and OS.  In Photoshop Elements 4 and the old scanner, I could go to the File menu, select "Import" and find the scanner listed, going then directly to the Canon ScanGear interface to use to scan images.  This is not currently happening with the new software and scanner.  Under the File menu now I now only see "Images from device..." which takes me to another much less useful interface with the scanner.  How can I get Photoshop to again connect directly to the ScanGear interface?

How can I get Photoshop to again connect directly to the ScanGear interface?
    AFAIK, you cannot.
The direct connection required the less-than-reliable TWAIN plugin to access the manufacturer's scanner driver which was usually 32 bit only. Photoshop CC is going 64 bit only (it's there already on Macs) so Adobe has removed TWAIN from CC entirely.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/twain-plug-photoshop-cs4-cs5.html
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1245120
Additionally, when in use, TWAIN requires exclusive access to Photoshop so you cannot do anything else while scanning is occurring.
Adobe recommends scanning outside Photoshop (using a 3rd party utility such as Vuescan http://www.hamrick.com/). You can then scan (with Vuescan) and use Photoshop simultaneously. Then import the scanned image into PS CC.

  • Communication problem in Mac Photoshop 11.0.1 (CS4)

I’m using OS10.6.3 Mac, and recently Photoshop can not detect CanoScan 8600F (scanner):  I see 8600F in the import menu in Photoshop vers. 11.0.1, but when I select it, I get an error message saying that ‘Cannot communicate with scanner. Cable may be disconnected or scanner may be turned off.  Check Status.  Scanner driver will be closed.  155.0.0’ - I then click the OK button to close the alert and Photoshop freezes with spinning colored ball and I need to force quit the app.  I reinstalled the entire Adobe CS4 as well as 8600fosx12131ej4.dmg, cstbosx5014ej4.dmg, and cstb50oposx101en.dmg, but problem persists.  Curiously Canon’s Scanner Toolbox and Arcsoft Photostudio work fine with scanner.
I should mention that I replaced the OS hard disk and used Migration Manager to import previous apps and the like.  Before reinstalling CS4, I uninstalled CS4 and deleted all CS4 files from preferences and application support per a suggestion on the web.  When I ran Adobe CS4 Clean Script, it reported that there was nothing to delete.
Please advise since I'm out of ideas.  Thanks.

    Ahh.... now we're getting somewhere.
When it works under one user and not under another..... it's permissions.
You need to check out AppleJack.
You run it in Single User mode and it deep cleans the system cache, and repairs permissions at the Unix Kernel level.
    Find it at sourceforge.net
There are instructions for installing and using it.
I'd say there's about an 85% probability that after AppleJack, your scanner will return.

  • Strange error while installing itunes 9.0.1 update

i'm not entirely sure what the file was (i thought i copied the text, but i should have taken a screen capture) but i think it was:
    CNQL1212_ClassicNotSeize.kext
it told me that it had been improperly installed. if it's this file, it's the second time this error has shown up (the first time was while naively installing files from the optional folder that were apparently already installed).
any clue what's causing this to occur?
EDIT: got screen capture. link here:

  • Photoshop Elements 4.0 compatability issues with Vista

How to resolve compatability issues when loading Photoshop Elements 4.0 with Vista operating system. The Software came with Canon Canoscan 8600F scanner.

Nope, I'm afraid that's not gonna work out. The best you can hope for is trying compatibility modes, but otehrwise I don't think there is any way to run this 7 or 8 year old software on Vista or Win7/ Win8 for that matter...

  • Scanning using Organizer in Elements 10

I am trying to scan photos from my canoscan 8600f to organizer  , when i do , organizer freezes and i get an error message of a big red cross and the word scangear underneath and after that the message "unable to open twain source please check connection the restart Canoscan toolbox" . I am using windows 7 4gb of ram and approx 300 gb of free space on hard drive .

Bypass the Unwelcome Screen by creating Desktop shortcuts for the Organizer and the Editor, and restarting your computer.
    The Editor's executable is:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 10\PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe"
    The Organizer's executable is:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Elements 10 Organizer\PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe"
The Unwelcome Screen leaves a zombie process running which prevents the actual program from launching again.

  • Error while update iTunes

This has happened several times and I have yet to figure out why. Whenever I update iTunes it receives a Bonjour Service 100 ID error. It fully states:
540: ERROR: read_msg errno 10054 (An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.)
The update service says that if this continues to go into Tools>Downloads and try a manual install. BUt I can't find those choices anywhere in iTunes. I feel so smart right now.
I have no idea what to do. The computer that is having the ploblem is a Gateway NV53, AMD Athlon II 2.0GHz, 4GB memory, Windows 7 64-bit Home edition. There's no viruses or trojans.

  • Site definitions not mapping correctly in Windows 7

I'm trying to create site definitions going from Windows 7, both from copying from Windows XP and starting new sites in Windows 7, and am encountering mapping issues in both scenarios.  I can't have the local definition be a root level w/ "/public_html/", although that's where things are mapped remotely.  Can someone tell me why this is occurring?

    5. Select your Scanner's TWAIN driver (not the WIA driver) and Click OK.
Only the WIA driver shows up for HP LaserJet 3055 Scanner 1.0 (32-32).  Also my CanoScan 8600F 12.1 (32-32)
    6. Now, invoke File > Acquire menu.
I could not scan legal size paper using this because it isn't offered from the drop-down menu.  I used Acrobat instead.
    7. Does it give the same output. No, it worked this time, but only for black and white scans and not grayscale or color.
Thanks for the suggestion.  At least I was able to scan legal paper using the auto feeder which was my problem.  Windows 7 does not offer scanning legal size paper and I can't get Microsoft to own up to this problem.

  • Best Scanning Options

For scanning photos into iPhoto08, what are the best options (let's assume I have a flat bed scanner with sufficient DPI). Although -- what's the best DPI for a 4X6 if I want to support blowing them up digitally later?
Are there utilities where I can put multiple photos on the bed, and scan them at the same time, to chop them separate later? I have SOOOOO many photos, I don't want to scan them one at a time!
Are there any services anyone knows about for standard photos to be scanned in high volume? These would be photos over the last 15-20 years.
Any recommendations, utilities, strategies, etc. appreciated.

I like to print at 300 dpi if at all possible. So you'll have to figure the largest print you might want to print and set the scan dpi for that. If it's an 8 x 10 you'll need 3000 x 2400 pixels. So for an 4 x 6 you'll want to scan at 3000/6 or about 500 dpi. Most scanners will have a standard 600 dpi setting. If you plan on a larger photo do the same math.
If you have slides to scan then you'd probably want to up the resolution to about 2400.
As far as scanning I use a Canon Canoscan 8600F scanner that can scan multiple photos at one time and put them each in a separate file. That's speeds up the scanning process considerably. I would imagine other brands of scanners would have similar features. The Canon also will scan 4 slides or a film strip and separate the images into separate files.
I'm not familiar with commercial scanning services. You can get an idea of price by Googling and see what you find. A lot depends on the amount of time you have to do the scanning. I'm retired so that's not a problem. If you have the time you might find that having them done commercially will cost several time more that the cost of a good scanner.
NOTE: If you're scanning black and white photos scan them as color because iPhoto doesn't play well with the grayscale file format.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • After upgrade to OS X missing Codecs (Microsoft Video1 and .asf) **please help**

    Hi all,
I made several videos using Microsoft Video 1 and .asf source data. After I upgraded my MAC to the latest OS suddenly no import is working and no codecs are found. I tried to load some codecs from web pages, but with no success. So I installes CS5 again and still no import works. Even existing videos show missing media information in a project.
    Can anyone help me???
    Dirk

What system did you upgrade from?   Do you have Time Machine running?
For the scanner you might try VueScan. It works with my older Canoscan 8600F scanner.  You can run it in demo mode to see if it will work with your scanner.  If VueScan doesn't recognize the scanner try downloading the 32bit version.  That's what I had to do before it would recognize my scanner.  And have the scanner turned on before launching VueScan.
For the printing you might try the Gutenprint for Mac OS X - GIMP-Print - SourceForge drivers.  Have worked for many.
