Canoscan N1240U and OS X 10.6.x Snow Leopard

Dear all
Having seen MANY other threads on the topic and having done lots of playing myself, I thought I would share how I got my scanner working today.
1. I downloaded both the Canoscan Toolbox and the latest drivers from here: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ProductCatIndex1Act&fcategoryid =104
Note that they are ONLY available from the US site. The European/UK site which I originally went to only has version 4 driver for 10.1.x and will not work as it is Classic 9 binary.
2. Change your account to have full Admin rights within the Accounts pane. For some reason, none of it is happy installing without those rights.
3. Install the drivers first. They will be installed to your System area. Reboot.
4. Install the Canoscan Toolbox to Applications. You MUST have this installed for the scanner to work.
5. Install the drivers AGAIN. This time the installer will put them in the Canoscan folder in Applications. Reboot again.
6. Plug in your scanner. At this point you will think it is broken. It isn't. OSX will find it but, unlike under Windows, it will not do make a short calibration whirring noise as if it is scanning.
7. Run Canoscan Toolbox and set-up the buttons and Settings as you want.
8. Press one of the button on the front of the Scanner (Copy, Scan or Email). Personally, I have the "Email" button set to scan the document and create a PDF as I am increasingly going paperless and scan most things rather than filing.
9. The software & scanner should start calibrating at this point and start scanning. You can leave it running or cancel as not, it is entirely up to you, as long as you have the warm glow of satisfaction at having got an 8 year old piece of kit working with Snow Leopard.
Best Regards
GeekDaddy

The following notes report back on reviving the Canoscan N1240U under OS 10.5.8 - I understand how confusing it is that the software does not appear to be installing in the locations specified (above) - go ahead and do the 2nd round of installations, and with luck (fingers crossed) you will also see your old scanner come to life.
As is ALWAYS the case (in my experience) you will not find coherent instructions on the manufacturer's website. This is surely not by accident. Don't waste any valuable time attempting to glean a method from there.
And another piece of electronics has been diverted from the 'average path' of becoming toxic landfill. I'm sure Canon hates this! I poke my tongue at them.
And now, to attempt my next trick - resume printing to a venerable old HP LaserJet 5MP. Another journey with many obstacles.

    Good Morning,
I have a MacBook Pro 15" and my warranty just ran out! I partitioned my harddrive into two partitions, one with Snow Leopard and the other with microsoft. This morning I turned on my Macbook Pro and it will not boot into Snow Leopard. I shut it off took out the battery, reinstalled the battery. Then I put in the Snow Leopard CD and booted up to disk utility and The Snow Leopard partion would not show up?? I do see the microsoft partion.
I also rebooted holding down the shift key and still no Snow Leopard
Could you please tell me what I can do, what keys do I press on restart any advice to get Snow leopard back.
    thank you.

Have you restarted holding down the Opt key?  That procedure should give you a gray screen with all of the partitions that exist.  Then select the SL partition for boot.  Also go to System Preferences and Startup Disk, unlock the lock and select the SL partition as the default boot partition, then relock.

  • I have a MacBook that is running 10.5.8 and I cannot update it to Snow leopard

I have a MacBook that is running 10.5.8 and meets the tech specs for Snow Lepoard.  I am attempting to upgrade to SL using a "Mac OS X Install DVD version 10.6.3".  However, when attempting to run the installer from the disc I recieve an error stating "This Mac cannot be upgraded to this version of OS X."  No further information is given nor are there any buttons or clicks to recieve additional info.  I receive the same error whether I'm running the installer when the Mac is already running or when holding down the C key as the computer starts up.
Does anyone know why this issue is occurring or how to resolve it?
    Thanks

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
(NB: PowerPC applications can still be run in Snow Leopard using Rosetta, but they will not work in later versions of OS X.)
The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Check via Software Update whether any further updates are required, particularly to iTunes.
You should now see the App Store icon in iTunes, and you now need to set up your account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
You can now upgrade to Mavericks OS 10.9 for free IF you have one of the following Macs, with not less than 2GB of RAM, and at least 8GB of available space on your hard drive:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    iCloud system requirements:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4759
If you cannot run Mavericks you can purchase the code to use to download Lion from the App Store (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard):
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
    or Mountain Lion:

You phone the Apple Store and order a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD, and if desired, update it to 10.6.8 and get Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store.

My MacBook (10.5.8) is very slow and has significant problems loading will Snow Leopard (10.6.3) help or make my computer slower?
Also why does my Macbook make so much noise (The noise concerns me because it is so loud it sounds like the laptop will break down or something at any point)?

It depends on your Macbook model how to open the bottom case.
Anyway you need to open up the buttom case or keyboard panel to access the CPU fan like following.

If you think you can't do that by yourself, you'd better bring it to Apple Store Genius Bar or Authorized Servce Shop to tell them about the problem.

  • I have a late 2009 iMac. I installed OSX 10.8.4 and want to go back to Snow Leopard. I have a 1.5TB external HD. Are there any issues I need to know about or tips I need to know before doing this? Thanks.

Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
      1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer
loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the
          Utilities menu.
      2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status
of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then
the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART
info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on
the Partition tab in the DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions
from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS
Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on
the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups made while on Snow Leopard, then you may do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion/Mountain Lion files.

Your profile says OS 10.5.8, Snow Leopard is 10.6.
After installing Snow Leopard, did you do a software update? Apple menu / Software update ..
If you have not run it yet, do so. It will give you the highest versions of Snow Leopard and Safari. That might help.

  • Some Videos and Games Do Not Work, Mac Snow Leopard

This is a problem I have actually had for a while, but it never really affected much that I considered important. Now it is just getting annoying.
Basically, certain video players and online games do not work. Most video players outside of YouTube will not work. The player will load, but the video never does. For example, the most recent video I have had trouble with is the Nickelodeon video player for The Legend of Korra. When I try to watch that, I get a black box, and a “Loading” type image pops up, swirls around once, and then disappears. After that, the whole thing becomes unresponsive. This is typical of many, but not all, video players I have encountered on the web.
I am not sure if it is related, but I have also had trouble with various games. Often time, they will work fine until reaching some transition point, such as the end of a level, and then they will become unresponsive. A good example here is the game Bloons Tower Defense 4. This is a game I know was responsive on my older system. But now, when it loads the level, it freezes up before loading the available towers to place and becomes otherwise unresponsive. An example is shown below. The top-left question mark box in the right-hand sidebar should reveal a dart monkey, and my starting money should be filled, but instead the game hangs up. I have had similar hang-ups on a number of games, so I am certain the problem is not just with this game.
As I said, I have had this problem for a while now. I have upgraded both Flash and my browsers a number of times since they started. I have these problems in all my browsers (Safari, Opera, Camino, Firefox), so it seems to be a problem with Flash. I have also tried uninstalling and re-installing flash and disabling all other browser plug-ins.
I am using a MacBook Pro with Macintosh OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard, 2.53 GHz Intel Core i5, with Flash 11.2.202.233. Current Browsers: Firefox 11.0, Opera 11.61, Camino 2.1.2, Safari 5.1.5
Any ideas what I could be overlooking?

Hey, it is getting them to work. Although I still have the “URL Not Found” error on BTD, and I get a whole different debugger error on Korra. But none of the errors prevent the associated items from working. Hopefully this will work in the other places I have had trouble with.
Anyway, the new error for Korra was:
Error #2044: Unhandled ioError:. text=Error #2032: Stream Error. URL: http://pixel.quantserve.com/api/segments.xml?a=p-94wNw88f65Rhk

  • Unable to access gateway and DNS via VPN (L2TP) with Snow Leopard Server

    Summary:
After rebooting my VPN server, i am able to establish a VPN (L2TP) connection from outside my private network. I am able to connect (ping, SSH, …) the gateway only until the first client disconnects. Then i can perfectly access all the other computers of the private network, but i cannot access the private IP address of the gateway.
Additionally, during my first VPN connection, my DNS server, which is on the same server, is not working properly with VPN. I can access it with the public IP address of my gateway. I can access it from inside my private network. A port scan indicates me that the port 53 is open, but a dig returns me a timeout.
    Configuration:
    Cluster of 19 Xserve3.1 - Snow Leopard Server 10.6.2
Private network 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 -> domain name: cluster
-> 1 controller, which act as a gateway for the cluster private network, with the following services activated:
DHCP, DNS, firewall (allowing all incoming traffic for each groups for test purposes), NAT, VPN, OpenDirectory, web, software update, AFP, NFS and Xgrid controller.
    en0: fixed public IP address -> controller.example.com
    en1: 192.168.1.254 -> controller.cluster
-> 18 agents with AFP and Xgrid agent activated:
    en1: 192.168.1.x -> nodex.cluster with x between 1 and 18
VPN (L2TP) server distributes IP addresses between 192.168.1.201 and 192.168.1.210 (-> vpn1.cluster to vpn10.cluster). Client informations contain the private network DNS server informations (192.168.1.254, search domain: cluster).
    _*Detailed problem description:*_
After rebooting the Xserve, my VPN server works fine except for the DNS. My client receives the correct informations:
    Configure IPv4: Using PPP
    IPv4 address: 192.168.1.201
    Subnet Mask:
    Router: 192.168.1.254
    DNS: 192.168.1.254
    Search domain: cluster
From my VPN client, i can ping all the Xserve of my cluster (192.168.1.1 to 18 and 192.168.1.254). If i have a look in Server Admin > Settings > Network, i have three interfaces listed: en0, en1 and ppp0 of family IPv4 with address 192.168.1.254 and DNS name controller.cluster.
The DNS server returns me timeouts when i try to do a dig from my VPN client even if i am able to access it directly from a computer inside or outside my private network.
After i disconnect, i can see in Server Admin that the IP address of my ppp0 interface has switch to my public IP address.
Then i can always establish a VPN (L2TP) connection, but the client receives the following informations:
    Configure IPv4: Using PPP
    IPv4 address: 192.168.1.202
    Subnet Mask:
Router: (Public IP address of my VPN server)
    DNS: 192.168.1.254
    Search domain: cluster
From my VPN client, i can access all the other computers of my network (192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.18) but when i ping my gateway (192.168.1.254), it returns me timeouts.
I have two "lazy" solutions to this problem: 1) Configure VPN and DNS servers on two differents Xserve, 2) Put the public IP address of my gateway as DNS server address, but none of these solutions are acceptable for me…
    Any help is welcome!!!

I would suggest taking a look at:
    server admin:vpn:settings:client information:network route definitions.
as I understand your setup it should be something like
    192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0 private.
at least as a start. I just got done troubleshooting a similar issue but via two subnets:

  • I took Lion off my Macbook Pro and put Snow Leopard back on and now I can't access Mail or iPhoto. How do I get Mail and iPhoto to work with the Snow Leopard I just put back on?

Hi. I was having slowness problems with my Macbook Pro and thought I would re-install Lion but put Snow Leopard back on by mistake. I bought the computer used with Lion on it and don't have access to the USB drive or a username/password to reinstall Lion. Now I can't access Mail or iPhoto since I put Snow Leopard on.
Is there a way to get my Mail and iPhoto working again with Snow Leopard or do I have to "re-upgrade" to Lion?
    Thanks!
    Steve

You can't. When you converted those libraries to Lion's format, you lost the ability to go backwards. Unless you saved a bootable backup./clone or Time Machine backup of your previous SL installation, you're up the proverbial creek w/o a paddle.

  • Is there a way to share my Mail account and settings between two partitions, running Snow Leopard and Lion?

I have two partitions on my internal hard drive - one is running Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and the other is running Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. Mail (5.0) is set up and runs perfectly on the Lion partition and I have not used Mail (4.5) yet on my Snow Leopard partition. I want to know if I can read, download, and save mail into the same user Library folder (probably the Lion user library) from both partitions...

You usually set up your mail accounts on a specific e-mail client programs such as Mail in OS X and Mail on an iPad, which will access the same remote mail server to have your messages show up on each device. Mailboxes can be synced in this way between two devices.
An alternative is to use the same remote application such as Gmail to access that service from multiple devices, so a dedicated e-mail client like Mail is not needed, but the availability of these depends on the e-mail service being used.

  • I have a big problem with Lion and PGP. After upgrading from snow leopard to lion I cannot access my PGP drive which was generated under snow leopard. PGP does not start but gives a notion that lion cannot work with my PGP version. Solution?

After upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion I cannot access a PGP drive which was generated under snow leopard. PGP does not start. When I try to start I just receive a message that Lion cannot work with PGP. How can I now access important and confifential informatio which I have stored in PGP (snow leopard). Do I have to move back to snow leopard. If so, how can I do this?

    If you have this product,
    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH165159
you have to go back to Snow Leopard.
To re-install SL, back up your home directory, format and re-install.
