Cant back up
HI all,
I bought a new Iomega 500Gb portable external hard drive for my macbook. As soon i plugged it, time machine asked if it wanted me to use this as as back up drive, i clicked yes, and the process started. within a few minutes, my computer hung (for the first time), and didnt come back for a long time, so I had to manually eject the hard drive and computer came back. since then trying to back up using time machine is not working... the first 6.1Gb's are fast, then the computer hangs and finally backup stops. Error message comes up - time machine error - cant back up.
I have been through the forums before, have gone through troubleshooting tips, reformatted the external drive (3-4 times) - as per trouble shooting and tried the tips on previous forums... but still cant make it work. It starts backing up - does only around 72 Mb and then hangs - finally stops.
Dont know if anyone has any suggestions. The hard drive is mac compatible. I have spend two days trying to figure it out, with no relief.

This sounds like the drive isn't formatted properly, but if you've done it per #5 in the
Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum, it must be something else.
A clue may be lurking in your logs. Click here to download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. Navigate to the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages for that run here.

By the looks of it I'm having the same problem as lots of people. Apple seem to have made the system of syncing and backing up 2 iphones as difficult as possible. I have just bought an iphone4 and synced it to my imac. I now have my wife's apps and content. Now when it try to back up my wife's phone using a seperate log in on my imac and a new itunes install I'm asked " do you want to sync and erase all of the details on my wifes phone or do I want to erase and sync and loose all her data. No option not to!!!! I thought it was maybe the inset of dementure but lots of people are having the same problem. How hard can it be to back up one phone at a time and only that phone? Backing up my Nokia was a doddle! I thought Apple were well know for. making things easy? I have also tried backing up my wife's to a seperate itunes but you cant export her contacts etc unless I have office and entourage which I don't. I cant back up her phone as it is with all it content and apps and start from scratch as I get only the sync and erase and destroy option. AAAGGGHHH
1) authorize iTunes on your wife's user account for her iTunes store account(s)
2) connect the device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.
3) sync the device
iTunes will wipe the iPhone but, since you transferred her purchases in the previous step, your content will be in her library and you can re-populate the iPhone with it. -
I cant back up my iPhone, as it needs a password but my screen is broken and i cant put in a password, is there anyways around this situation
If your phone is locked because you entered passcode wrong too many times then you need to restore as new and data will be lost

i have an iphone 3gs 16gb and it is full with music and nothink else no apps or anything, ive had a few 4s but ive got an iphone 5 but the prob is that i cant back up all the music on 3gs, some is been ripped from discs i now dont have any more. ie foo fighters best ov is on my 3gs but will not download it on to da 5 or 4s ether! also some music i have payed for also will not download as well. ie. payed for a linkin park trak, but when i go into itunes and look under purchased music it will not be there. so i never sink my 3gs coz i may loss all ov the music on it. i have backed up the 3gs too the cloud and also the laptop and still nothink, i have also had a few laptops starting with an tower running windows XP thourgh to a windows 8 notebook. can anyone help?? thanks
ps when syncing it jumps through steps 1 - 4 real fast, i seem to remeber iphone showing the number of tracks transferring and names, but i see nothing? then it sits on 5 saying "waiting for changes to be applied"

Error 102 showing on phone but cant back up data
After trying to download an app today I was told on screen that i would have to update the app world software. I tried to do this by following the on screen instructions but have received a message on screen stating ' error 102 please reload software' The phone wont reboot and when I connect to Blackberry desktop it cant connect to my phone and says I need to download the latest version of the device software for it to connect. It also says i will loose all my data if i do so and of course I cant back it up in the usual way as it cant read my phone data.
It seems im stuck in a dead end unless im prepared to loose all my data. Is there any way around this so I can back up the data somehow ?

Hopefully it contains something useful! There also are multiple existing threads on this site that discuss that exact error...your review of those might prove useful, and a search of this site, using the error message, error code, or symptom, should reveal all applicable existing threads to you.
Unfortunately, with that error, it is highly likely that your data is already gone from your device...hence, a backup would be irrelevant. Regular backups, like insurance, are neither a reactive nor an optional activity.

im trying to back up my entire library to disc so i bought a bunch of CD-Rs and DVD+Rs, and neither way works. when i use the DVD+R to back the library up, it gets halfway through the first disc and i get an error message and it tells me it cant back it up. then when i tried the CD-R (brand new ones), i insert the first disc and it tells me that it's not blank... i know it can fit on 3 of the DVD+Rs, and i like that way better anyway because it can fit easier on the dvd's, and it starts to back up about half of the first disc on the dvd, but then out of nowhere it says there's a problem...
any help is appreciatedThank goodness, I thought it was only me. When I tried to backup my new purchases it comes up with unknown error 1951, when I try to back up my entire library it pops each disc out saying insert blank disc. I even bought a brand new pack of discs. anyone have any ideas out there???

ipurchace some music from i tunes from my computer then syced my iphone 4 got a message cant back up phone file corupt but the music was put on the phone but my camera was missing in the apps and my photos wont pull up corectley tried to sync a couple of times still had same issues help would be appriciated
It does not immediately delete the files that are missing.. it merely tries to backup the new files it has discovered on the external drive. Since you moved the files there, the backup at least for a while will contain both copies.. and that is why it doesn't have enough space to backup.
Fixing the problem.. hmm pondini is the expert.. you should be able to delete the backup of the photos in existing backup.. there are instructions to do it.. but it is a very poor way to do things.
Much better. .archive off the existing backup.. this is long and slow but worth it. you need a usb drive of the same size as the TC drive. Then erase the TC and start a fresh set of backups.
The alternative is to use the USB drive as a new target.. but it is much slower than the TC internal drive.

Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, you are trying to backup to iTunes and are not able to. have you tried backing up to iCloud? I would recommend that you read these articles, they may be helpful in troubleshooting your issue.

Icloud acct. storage keeps loading up and I cant back up anymore
My daughter has 3 devices to her icloud acct. - her itouch, ipad mini and iphone; all with the same photo stream, and data from apps. It says I cant back them up because the 3 combined are over the 15GB I bought. If I change the settings to not backing up an app, then it tells me I will lose all the data. Hope do I control the duplicate storage taking up so much space?
I have two devices that fully use icloud and I only have around 2 GB used on icloud. She has an average of 5 GB per device, that's a lot. If she has lots of photos, then she should be syncing them to a computer for archiving and not bothering to back them up in icloud. (Always sync photos to a comptuer for archiving.)
If she has a lot of text messages, the those are automatically backed up to an icloud backup - have her delete many of them. Videos? These take up a lot of space. And, yes, if she has duplicate data on the devices, they will be backed up multiple times - nothing can be done about that, unless she has only one device that backs up some of the redundant data and not the others.
As I said, using 15 GB with 3 devices is a whole lot of data.

Go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage. Choose the device you want info on. On the next page, you'll get a listing and size of all data store in the next backup. You can also turn on/off backups of individual apps' data.
And photo stream doesn't use up icloud storage in your account, so don't bother dealing with that. BTW, the stream is used to sync photos betwen devices, don't use it as a storage service. Always sync photos to a computer for archiving. -

My iTunes is up-to-date.
There is no number, just said "an error occured".
There's no problem on iCloud back up, only take long time.
I have tried this and re-downloaded iTunes, both didn't work.
I have decided to give it all up. From now on I will never keep any important data on my phone. I prefer old-fashioned one better because I like to be independent. Technology is too complicated to understand. Too much headache. Thanks anyway. Goodbye!
