Cant boot from CD

Hello everyone,
I have an imac 700mz, I ran norton disk doctor, it told me I had a few major problems on my hard drive and to boot from the norton disk, when I tried I could not boot from the cd rom, I held down the "c" key and what it does is eject the disk then It boots up from the HD. I also reset the pram and also tried to boot from another disk that also didn't help. I dont know we it ejects the disk during start up but I think that is the problem.
Any suggestions?
Thank you Gus

Hello Gus,
First of all get rid of Norton, use it for a coaster or a frisbee but not on your Mac! Do not let Norton near your X system, it will hose it!
Norton Disk Doctor is not compatible with OS X 10.4 Tiger. Symantec ceased development of Norton Utilities for Macintosh and Norton SystemWorks for Macintosh over 2 years ago.
Here is a link to Uninstall Norton. Don't use the uninstaller on your Norton disk. (That uninstaller is not compatible with 10.4 Tiger)
This uninstaller works with Tiger and will find the 30 or so "invisibles" you will never find if you do it manually. However it may leave behind some files. Depending on which Norton you have installed.
Download and run Cocktail in "Interface" > "Finder" choose to see "invisibles". Or use OnyX.
Look for files like these on the top level of your hard drive:
/Norton FS Volume 2
/NAV Mac 800QS File
/Norton FS Data 808K
/Norton FS Volume
/Norton FS Index
Find those files drag them (not command-delete) to the trash and empty it.
Get TechToolPro 4.5 or DiskWarrior 3.0.3 if you want to have a good utility on hand.

I do not know about Disk Warrior but if you have a compatible OSX on an external HDD you certainly can boot the MBP.  Use startup manager:

can any one help me out here, tomorrow I am going to boot it into target disk mode and install from a G5 onto the powerbooks HD doing a CLEAN install and then I am going to try booting it from a DVD and doing another CLEAN intstall just cause I dont trust a firewire install for some reason. I would like to avoid all this mess if possible. ANY HELP PLEASE, either respond or email me tend0 at mac dot com. thanks

haha oh man thanks for startin slow with me, but we are passed that tested RAM, start up items, prefs, tried makin a new user account, as I stated before I can not boot from a DVD/CD.. that was one of the problems so I cant run anything that involves tageting the main HDD while its mounted. I have also repaired perms, ran fsck, tried booting up DiskWarrior(didnt boot from the CD), etc. if any one knows this perticular kernel panic string and can point out what the conflict is I can resolve it but other than that I have ran the run of the mill check to see if everything is in order procedure again and again.

  • CDBOOT: Cant boot from CD - Code 5 (Windows 7)

    Hey gang,
I been searching for the past 2 days for my answer but unable to find it. Maybe you guys can help me which is VERY VERY VERY important that I get Windows 7 on my Macbook Pro!
I have a Windows 7 ISO which I obtain leggaly.  When I turn off my Mac and when it boots back up I keep getting:
CDBOOT: Cant boot from CD - Code 5
I have a "early" 2011 Macbook pro, I made 6 diffrent versions of the ISO (which none work), and Im stuck on what to do next.
I have tried to mount then burn, creat new ISO then burn, and I even tried to change the buring speed to x2.  I even tried 3 diffrent types of media too...
I been using the Disc Utility which came with my Mac which is ran by Lion 10.7.2
Any ideas on what to do?

This may be the answer. https://discussions.apple.com/message/10499544#10499544
However, if that doesn't work, why bother with bootcamp? Use a virtual drive via Parallels or Fusion, and run both simultaneously. Rebooting is a pain.

  • Windows on Imac12,1 issue - Cant boot from USB or CD/DVD

    Hello people.
I have this problem with my iMac, that i cant boot it from a USB drive or a CD.
Every time i try it says "No bootable device". Obviously i want to install Windows 7 to play a few games once in a while, and I've tried about everything i could imagine.
When i bought the iMac, some moron had installed windows and somehow deleted OSX. The problem was the same back then when i tried to boot from the Snow Leopard CD/DVD, all it said was "No bootable drive". I installed OSX by FireWire (Target mode) and formatted the hard drive.
I've tried to burn windows on a DVD as well as making a bootable usb drive, both with boot camp assistant, bot failed. "No bootable device".
I have seen some workarounds been done with Virtual machines and such, but it didn't work for me.
I already have downloaded parallels 7 and VMware Fusion (Latest, 5 i think. trial though). If any of you should know of a guide thats up to date, please do direct me to them - I've tried the ones i could find :-)
I would really appreciate you guys taking your time to answer, as i have been struggling with this issue for weeks and weeks with no luck.

  • Cant boot from snow leopard dvd and install crashes computer

Folks, hi, newbie to this forum but at wits end.
I have a MacBook Pro 17inch mid 2010 model. I added the OMG disk doubler and ditched the internal dvd, so I now have 2 X 500GB hard drives, one of which has the OSX. This disk in trouble and Disk Utility says that it needs repairing, but i need to repair after booting from an different disk.
So, I added a usb dvd drive and put in snow leopard. It would not boot via holding down 'c' and the option key only saw the current drive. No problems I thought, I will install onto the second hard drive and boot from that. The process got a fair way though (20 mins) and the computer crashed. I checked that it is GUID, tried again, and ditto. So, I made a new partition that was nice and clean -- and ditto. Stuck about now, I tried to format a usb hard drive -- ditto. Hmm, didnt want to, but out came the second drive and in went the old dvd drive -- same issue -- could not boot using c button and the option key did not recognise the snow leopard install. Out came the drive and I went to the apple store -- they told me that the Snow Leopard I had brought was an upgrade and that I needed a Box Set. $169 later and - you guessed it -- the dvd is the same, no start on c, not recognised on option, and the computer crashes if I try and install to the second hard drive or an external drive.
    Help anyone??

when i go to system prefs- startup, the dvd does not show up in the list of startup drives. The apple salesman said that the OSX install disk I purchased was not a start up disk / full install but rather an upgrade only disk. That is why he said to use the box set as a 'full install' - but both appear to not start up or be able to do a clean install. I just end up with a set of files call Mac OSX install files.

  • Cant boot from USB or DVD to install WIN 8.1 ENT

    Hello,
Im currently evaluating a Thinkpad tablet 10 at work. The installed OS is atm 8.1 Pro but we have to reinstall with 8.1 Enterprice in order to get everything to work within our network.
But this have been more difficult than i thought. Im totally unable to bot from USB or DVD.
    To sum up:
    - Made bootable usb win 8.1 ent (fat32) with Rufus
    - Made bootable dvd with PowerISO
Both works perfect in an ordinarie PC.
    - Mainly booting from computersettings/reset/advanced start/use unit.
    - Changed boot order in BIOS
    - Toggled safe boot on/off
    - Tried usb hdd / usb fdd / usb cd/dvd / etc
Whatever i choose - i reach the ordinarie win-login page.
    - Updated bios to latest version
Whatever i do - No boot reaction at all.
Hope I will get some answers so that we can use this tablet.
    //Andreas

HELP PLEASE If I can get the Apple CD to boot I have no problem with doing a clean install.

  • Cant boot from external drive

Using OS 10.10 on my iMac 27. I always keep a bootable clone external LaCie1T HD for doing maintenance on my iMac internal drive and as another backup. I use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my internal drive and to make my external drive bootable. This system has worked for years. Upgrading to Yosemite I can no longer boot from this external drive even though it is listed as bootable when holding down the option key at startup or when choosing a startup disk in system preferences. I have exhausted all efforts to resolve this anomaly to no avail including: directory repair, permission repair, cloning to a different drive,  What am I missing? Thanks in advance for any help on this matter.

Your post does not mention whether you have updated to the 4.0 version of Carbon Copy Cloner for Yosemite on your iMac.......but on the possibility that you have not yet done this, now might be a good time.

  • 3000 J 115 Vista Premium 32bit - cant boot from CD/DVD drive to do clean Windows7-64bit install

My 3000 J 115 Windows Vista Home Premium desktop configuration is as follows:
    - an EISA area
    - 2 SATA HDD
    - 2 IDE HDD
    - 1 IDE DVD-RW drive
I changed the BIOS boot order so that the CD/DVD drive is first. Upon rebooting, the CD/DVD drive light comes on at bootup time, but later it proceeds to boot from HDD.
I tried removing all other HDDs from the boot device list so that the CD/DVD drive is the only boot device - then I get the msg "NTLDR is missing. Press CtrlAltDel to restart".
The machine will boot only if the C drive HDD is on the bootable device list - the C drive is on the original disk that came with the machine (that disk also has the EISA partition). And then, it wont boot from the CD/DVD even if it is the first on the boot device list. Finally, it shows up all OS's on the OS selection screen at bootup even when the HDDs on which those OS's reside are not present in the boot list (I guess this is again because of the EISA).
I need to boot from the CD/DVD to do a clean install of Windows7 64bit from the bootable Windows installation CD. How can I get my machine to do that? (I checked my jumper and cable settings for the IDE drives and they seem to be ok)

I've had a similar issue trying to install Windows 7 on my mid-2010 MacBook Air, getting stuck at the Mac not recognising the USB Stick as a bootable device.
The rEFIt Toolkit solved this for me - simply install, reboot, and your stick shows up. From there everything was smooth sailing for me

  • Cant boot from SCSI CDROM

I am trying to boot to a SCSI DVD ROM drive and the scsi controler sees the bootable disk but i can not boot to it.
I was able to boot to the SCSI DVD on my abit motherboard whats different now.
    Any Sugestions.
No selecting Adaptec SCSI CDROM from the F11 Menu does not work.
UPDATE:   Removed SCSI ZIP from the chain and now it boots to the CD ....

If your BIOS doesn't support booting from SCSI (the option in Setup might be there, but the code for it might be missing) and there isn't any option ROM available to support it, it is a problem with your card. Try another controller with an option ROM to add support for SCSI boot.

  • G4 AGP running OSX doesn't boot from original OS 9.0 CD

I need to re-install OS9.0.4 on my g4 using the original CD. i cant open software install or restore, because Classic is not there. I cant boot from the CD's either. I tried pressing c on boot, setting the boot disk in system preferences - the blue folder blink with the question mark for a few seconds, before resuming boot into OSX - and pressing alt/option on boot - the os9 cd is not recognized as a boot cd. The strange thing is that it used to boot from the cd!, before i moved on to osx. I reformatted my second internal disk to make sure the oS9 drivers were installed and still nothing...
    Any tips?
    thanks

    Hi, Oogoo -
I don't know if it is a universal result, but many folk have posted that their machine will no longer boot to its original disks and OS version after updating the machine's firmware in preparation for installing OSX. It has also been reported as occuring after installing later versions of OSX, such as 10.4.x.
Machines that exhibit that issue seem to be able to boot to a retail (white label, gold 9) OS 9.1 or OS 9.2.1 Install CD, as appropriate for the machine. Your G4 (AGP) should be able to use either of those, provided the target hard drive does have OS 9 drivers installed.
Retail OS 9.2.1 Install CDs can still be obtained from Apple, but only by phone; all versions retail OS 9 Install CDs can also be obtained from sites like this one -

  • Cant boot G4 tower

    hi
ive been running a G4 tower 800mhz at work from an external lacie firewire drive with the latest tiger without any trouble so far.
however, since i took that drive home and connected it to my cube there to transfer some files, i cant boot from it any more.
the drive is completely fine and all my files are ok. just since i reconnected it at work, it doesnt boot anymore
it gets stuck at a standard blue apple desktop background.
ive done most of the things i could think of, including:
    - removing any startup items
    - single-user mode with some codes to reset vram etc
    - verbose mode doesnt give suspicious messages
    - verifying the disk using disk utility doesnt give errors
    - no third-party ram
any help? what can i do to make my disk bootable again?
any ideas why it became unbootable just by connecting it to another mac for like an hour or so?
    thanks a lot for suggestions
    maarten

no i didnt boot the cube from the external firewire drive. just connected it. went into my home folder on there, copied the files over, and disconnected it again
didnt do anything more with it
archive and install. sure a solution, but quite a pain. id prefer to find out whats wrong. i thought it might have to do something with permissions, but i repaired those and it didnt change anything. still stuck on startup....
