Cant boot with memory in duel mode!!!!

For some reason my computer will now longer boot up with memory in the duel mode and OCing the system. I keep getting a timing error. Tried several different timings all giving me the same thing or it locks once windows opens. Runs fine OC'd in single mode, just cant get it to boot in duel anymore. Any help would be great, left me know if you need any sys info and such.

I Really think that your Problems are due to the Fact that you are using that "Older" BIOS version , I think that once you Upgrade to a Newer (At least BIOS 1.7)BIOS Version Vresion you will Be Able to Run in Dual-DDR Mode, I suggest that you  Use "Live-Update-3", and Choose the DOS Option and "Flash" yor BIOS...Just make certain that you do NOT Choose the Flash through "Windows" Option when Prompted, Remember Coose the "DOS" Option ...........Sean REILLY875

  • Windows 7 x64 will not boot with memory upgrade (P6N SLI Platinum)

I recently bought 4x 2GB sticks of Crucial DDR2 memory.  I originally had Windows 7 x86 installed, and with all four sticks in place there was no problem (except the memory limit for x86).  All 8GB of memory registered fine though.
I decided to install the x64 version, but setup would hang at every step and installation took over 12 hours - Windows 7 would not boot either when it was complete.  I removed all but one of the 2GB sticks and everything installed fine and it's up and running now.  If I put the rest of the sticks back in, Windows begins to load but gets stuck at a black screen.  I've swapped each 2GB stick in my system and they all work as long as only one is inserted at a time.
MSI P6N Platinum SLI (v1.7 BIOS)
    Windows 7 x64 Ultimate
    Intel Core 2 Quad @2.4GHz
    4x 2Gb Crucial DDR2 @ 800 MHz
    NVidia GeForce 8800 GTS 640Mb
I've done some google searching, and it seems like other people are having the exact same problem with the P6N boards, but I've never seen any solution...

The memorycontroller on that board is an oldie, got one myself  and it will probably not run @800MHz with all slots occupied on a x64 OS.
That contoller is only rated for 667MHz when running all channells fully occupied.
The fact that you could run it so under x86 has probably to do with the fact it didnt adress all the memory, but only 3.25GB max and thus it was stable enough.
Now you are running an OS that uses all memory and thus it can become unstable while its running at a too high speed for the controller.
I had the same and could "only" get the memory to work @750MHz tops, before it decided to BSOD or bootloop on me.
This is inherent to its design (from NVidia, they made the chipset) and cannot be overcome, but dont worrie yourself, the speeddifference between 667MHz and 800MHz is negligible and will only show up if you run benches, in normal day to day use, you will hardly, if ever, notice it.
But, do you really need 8GB???
If you do gaming, internet, office and other "light" work, i.e. normal homeusage, 4GB is already more then enough.
8GB is nice if you use cad/cam, photoshop and other memory intensive stuff.

  • 875P NEO-FIS2R no boot with memory problems

I just got a NEO FIS2R board, a P4 2.6C, and two 512MB sticks of OCZ PC3200 Premier DDR.  I installed the board and connected only my hard drive, video card (GeForce4 Ti4200), both sticks of memory, and CPU (on a 300W PSU).  At first, the board would eventually make it to the "booting OS" stage, after spending a little time on "initializing video" (normal) and "assigning ISA" or something like that (don't know what that is, since the board has no ISA slot).  Unfortunately, although my monitor's light changed from yellow to green, meaning it was getting a signal, the screen remained blank.  I gave it a few minutes and finally turned off the computer.  After reseating the video card and memory and disconnecting the hard drive, the same problem occurred.  Finally, I took out one of the sticks.  After this, the computer hung on that ISA thing for about ten seconds, and then went back to "detecting memory" and gave a 2-1 error beep.  I switched between the two OCZ sticks and also two sticks slow generic PC2100 memory that I had in my old computer and I know work fine.  Eventually the computer stopped pausing at the ISA stage and went to the memory detection after only a second or so.  Since the video was obviously acting strange, I disconnected the video card so the computer contained only CPU and memory.  The bootup sequence was the same, except that in place of the single beep during video intialization, it gave me a 2-8 error code.  Finally, I took the board out of my case and laid it flat on the wooden table and tried again.  Still no boot.  I also cleared CMOS several times throughout this procedure, so that shouldn't be the problem.
Can anyone figure out what's going on here?  It's especially confusing to me that the computer booted all the way (sans video) at first, then started having memory problems, and that the system passes the initial memory test but then goes back to it after that ISA thing (this is all according to the D-Bracket).

On the compatability list, it says
    "Kingston KVR400X64C25/512
    W942508BH-5 (Winbond)"
Since the memory I am looking at is CL2, does that mean it might not be compatible after all?
If you're wondering whether the Kingston HyperX RAM you're looking at is the same as the Kingston RAM you've found on the compatibililty list, the answer is NO.  The RAM from the list that you're referring to has a model number that starts with "KVR", which stands for "Kingston Value RAM".  HyperX RAM has model numbers that start with the letters "KHX".
You might also note that there is no listing for any of the HyperX stuff on that compatibility chart.  However, I have seen posts from several people on this forum who seem to be using HyperX RAM with no problem.  I suspect that MSI hasn't updated that list in awhile, because there are no listings for many of the newer PC 3500, 3700, and 4000 RAM models.
I personally went 512mb (2x256) of OCZ PC3200EL DDR RAM, it is listed as 'OCZ (PN- OCZ400256EL ) PN- OCZ400256EL' on the compatibility chart.  I had plenty of problems trying to run a set of Corsair TwinX 3200PCT ver. 1.2 on my 875P NEO board, and I settled them by switching over to the OCZ RAM only because it was listed.  While it wasn't my first choice I'm pretty happy with it because so far it's been running stable at CAS 2,2,3,6, with the voltage at 2.65.

  • G770 won't boot normally or in safe mode... I suspect it has something to do with the boot optimizer

My Lenovo G770 will not boot in normal or safe mode.  I usually escape out of the boot optimizer.  Today I let it run and it went to the "starting windows" screen with a brief startup of the windows 7 animation...it freezes for a second, then a quick flash of the bsod, then to the "windows error recovery page" giving me the option of "starting windows normally" or "Launch Startup Repair (recommended)."
Starting Windows Normally eventually brings me back to the same place repeating what I just stated above paragraph.
When I launch the Startup Repair it "Cannot repair this computer automatically".
So I go to view advanced options for system recovery and support.
It brings me to 5 options:
Startup Repair (we already tried this above)
System Restore (unfortunately I didn't create any restore points)
System Image Recovery (unfortunately I haven't created an image to recover)
Windows Memory Diagnostic (no problems found-done several times)
Command Prompt (don't know what I can do here except for remove a bad/corrupted driver which may be the problem, but I don't know the driver name that is associated with the boot optimizer...can anyone tell me this?)
I've tried booting to safe mode in all of its incarnations and I can't even do that..it repeats the same things as stated above...windows 7 animation briefly starts then locks up, flash of bsod, then the windows error recovery page.
I've tried booting to last known good configuration (same thing occurs...brief startup of windows 7 animation, freeze, flash of bsod, then error recovery page.
The only thing that has given me any kind of result was "disabling system restart on system failure."  When I do this, the BSOD doesn't flash briefly..it stays. and it gives me the error message page_fault_in_nonpaged_area.
I'm at a loss as to what to do.  Not being able to boot into Safe Mode even is really frustrating.  Any advice from anyone?  can I remove the driver associated with the boot optimizer?  If so, what is the name of the driver and where (directory) is it located?

How did you resolve the issue?
I have the exactly same issue.
When I go System Image Recovery -->Select System Image-->Advanced->I can open all the drives [:Local Drive(C , LENOVO(D, Local Disk(E, Boot(X-where i think executable booting is here]. It comes with an Open prompt asking me to enter File Name with a File type: Setup Information.
I don't know which setup information and where to find it on my Drives.
    Anyone know how to fix?
I was trying to re-install Win 7 from DVD but it is not executing either.
Can I boot with USB Ubuntu and Install Win 7 from there??? but how?
    Need help?

Hey, my ipad is disabled and i cant open. i tried connecting it with itunes in recovery mode to restore it but it wont work it doesnt show and options itunes doesnt detect my ipad in recovery mode. what do i do know? please help!!!

If you followed these instructions and you were unable to enter recovery mode, I'm still leaning toward a hardware problem.  Also, since you have IOS-7, read this.  It might help.

  • When I boot in safe or regular mode, I get this on my Macbook Pro with upgraded Mavrick System Unapproved caller. SecurityAgentmay only be invoked by Apple software.  I can't boot my computer.

Unapproved caller. SecurityAgentmay only be invoked by Apple software. I just upgraded to Maverick and now I can't boot in regular or safe mode on my Macbook Pro.

I suggest you call Apple Care. However, the following is the BEST I can remember what I did as intructed by Apple Tech Support. I have a Time Machine Backup external hard drive.
    Turn off computer
Turn on and @ first sign of life, press and hold the Option button
    Follow the directions:
    Click: Repair disk
    Click: Repair Disk permissions
Get out of the section then pick the reinstall
    Option reinstall
If that did not work: it did not for mine:
Do the same as above and click erase disk. If you have a Time Machine Back up, you can return you Mac back into working order w/your applications software, i.e. Word: mac 2008, Skype, etc.
Unplug you external hard drive to eliminate any possible confusion.
After an  erase disk when starting like above (hold option button down while booting) and doing a total install,
Plug in your external drive with you Time Machine backups.
Only check applications and only users. Uncheck other files… and computer …
    http://www.bing.com/search?q=macbook+migration&pc=MOZI&form=MOZSBR
After I did this, my computer went back to normal. Takes about a day. Good luck. It isn't easy and there are no short cuts I know of but better than having to find an Apple Store or shipping your Mac in for a repair.

Finally just shut down. Thank you in advance for any help!

Shouldn't still have a 'beachballing'... if the drive is being found and the system is trying to boot from it but is having problems, I would suggest looking over ds store's user tip - Step by step to fix your Mac.
It's likely either something corrupt in your system files or a failing hard drive. But follow ds's steps until you find the cause of the problem.
    Good luck,

  • Memory On Duel 2 gig G5 Disappearing.

My Mac crashed yesterday 2/11/09. I noticed after I rebooted that the memory was showing 4.6 gig instead of 6 gig. I added 4 more gig last August. It has never had any other problems before this.
    I looked at Diagnostics:
    Power On Self-Test:
    Last Run: 2/11/09 7:33 AM
    Result: Failed
    Failure type: Memory
    Memory slots: DIMM0/J11, DIMM1/J12, DIMM4/J41, DIMM5/J42
I should have 4 512k dimms in slots 1 & 2. I should have 4 1 gig dimms in slots 3 & 4. I swapped dimms around finally concluding 1 set of 1 gig dimms was the problem. I removed them and everything seemed to work running with 4 gigs. Then the same thing happened again with the same Diagnostic error as above. So I put all the dimms back in and booted with the hardware test disk. It sees all the dimms properly. I ran the test (2 hours & 30 minutes). It ran fine. I put the computer to sleep & in the morning ran the long test again no errors and 6 gig of ram showing.
Any ideas what is or was wrong?

OK - I started to have similar problem:
    0) Dual 2.5ghz PowerPC G5 (late 2004)/4 gigabyte (512megs*2, 512megs*2, 1gig*2) w/OSX 10.4.11
    1) The very first cold boot always kernel panicks within 3 minutes.
    2) Force-rebooting allows me to run the computer for a while, but putting it to sleep crashes the OS (w/KP)
It ran just fine for 3 years or so ... then all of the sudden i'm faced with this weirdness
So I checked the System Profiler... under "Diagnostics" it shows the Power-on selftest result:
    Last Run: 4/17/09 10:14 AM
    Result: Failed
    Failure type: Memory
    Memory slots: DIMM0/J11, DIMM1/J12
And I booted the machine w/ Apple Hardware Test disk, and it tells me DIMM1/J12 is bad.
I tried swapping around memories (while keeping in mind they work in pair of course) and thet DIMM1/J12 still shows as defective! ....
Funny thing is that the "defected" DIMM sometimes gets recognised. The machine sometimes tells me the first pair is 512meg*2, while other times it shows it's a pair of 250meg DIMMs ... Once in a blue moon it shows the first slot pair is "EMPTY" ... like right now.
Of course I zapped NVRAM and PRAM several times but the issue remains... I know it's a hardware issue because the machine crashes even while running in the blackscreen singleuser mode. Very unreliable.
Could someone tell me the cause(s) of this weirdness? Thank you in advance!

  • Ran DiskUtility on Bootcamp partition, now windows cant boot

I installed Windows 7 Ultimate on my MBPr and it was booting fine several times.
I noticed yesterday the bootcamp partition was no longer showing System Preferences -> Startup Disk
I could still get Windows 7 to boot if I did a restart on Mac OSX 10.7.4, held down the Option button during startup, then I was given the Bootcamp partition as a choice.
I went back into Mac OSX, and tried running Disk Utility to verify and then repair the Boot Camp partition. It thought it found all kinds of errors and claimed to fix them. I let it very and fix the main root drive (my entire hard drive) and it claimed tor repair the boot paritions.
Bootcamp still not showing in System Preferences -> Startup Disk
Now Windows 7 does not boot properly, it comes up into system repair mode. And it can not restore to an earlier point in time. All the system repair options crash with memory reference errors shortly after they get started.
I guess it is was silly to expect the Mac Disk Utility to properly repair a windows drive. But if it can't do this, the option shouldnt have been offered!
So I guess its time to erase the Bootcamp partition and start over.  Good thing I didn't install anything important in Windows, other than all the updates.

The option won't be there unless you added a 3rd party NTFS driver that is suppose to add NTFS write support.
And that driver is why Windows didn't show in Startup Disk (which does happen too on its own and is totally benign)
If you want to repair Windows, use chkdsk and/or the Windows 7 DVD you have. Not Lion DU.
You dont' erase NTFS in DU either. you can format it in Windows 7 DVD, yes, just like you did originally.
And when you get it running, make backup system image(s) with WinClone 3 (in OS X, to an external hard drive - not to your Mac boot volume)
    http://www.twocanoes.com/
if you are going to use and need to write to NTFS, the only one current and work best today

  • Cant boot G4 tower

    hi
ive been running a G4 tower 800mhz at work from an external lacie firewire drive with the latest tiger without any trouble so far.
however, since i took that drive home and connected it to my cube there to transfer some files, i cant boot from it any more.
the drive is completely fine and all my files are ok. just since i reconnected it at work, it doesnt boot anymore
it gets stuck at a standard blue apple desktop background.
ive done most of the things i could think of, including:
    - removing any startup items
    - single-user mode with some codes to reset vram etc
    - verbose mode doesnt give suspicious messages
    - verifying the disk using disk utility doesnt give errors
    - no third-party ram
any help? what can i do to make my disk bootable again?
any ideas why it became unbootable just by connecting it to another mac for like an hour or so?
    thanks a lot for suggestions
    maarten

no i didnt boot the cube from the external firewire drive. just connected it. went into my home folder on there, copied the files over, and disconnected it again
didnt do anything more with it
archive and install. sure a solution, but quite a pain. id prefer to find out whats wrong. i thought it might have to do something with permissions, but i repaired those and it didnt change anything. still stuck on startup....

I would like to avoid all this mess if possible. ANY HELP PLEASE, either respond or email me tend0 at mac dot com. thanks

haha oh man thanks for startin slow with me, but we are passed that tested RAM, start up items, prefs, tried makin a new user account, as I stated before I can not boot from a DVD/CD.. that was one of the problems so I cant run anything that involves tageting the main HDD while its mounted. I have also repaired perms, ran fsck, tried booting up DiskWarrior(didnt boot from the CD), etc. if any one knows this perticular kernel panic string and can point out what the conflict is I can resolve it but other than that I have ran the run of the mill check to see if everything is in order procedure again and again.

  • Macbook Pro 7,1 (mid 2010?) boot with 6GB mem, but not with 8GB

    Hello,
I bought a Macbook Pro 13" equipped with 4GB RAM at Apple Store on Oct-2010, and it says it's Macbook Pro 7,1 in profiler.
I tried to upgrade the RAM from 2GBx2 to 4GBx2, but the MBP freezed in boot sequence with 8GB RAM.
After some tests, including swap and change the combination of memory modules, I found my MBP can boot with 2+4GB configuration, but not with 4+4GB.
Does anyone know similar issue on the latest MBP 13"?

This is a memory speed problem - check here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=13154160#13154160
When using 2+4 gb, memory speed is choosen, based on the slowest dimm - the 2gb one (1066mHz), when using single/double 4gb - speed is 1333mHz).
You can see the memory speed in diagnostic mode. I'm trying some stuff, if I succeed, I'll post my way.
ps. Changing 4gb memory sodimms to 1066mHz will solve your problem. Or if apple fixes the efi to downclock the 1333mhz ones (which btw every pc can do from the bios).

  • My 2009 iMac gets stuck on the grey Apple logo when booting up.  It boots correctly when in safe mode. I have tried erasing the HD and re-installing from a USB installer. It says the install is complete, but after restarting it gets stuck on the Apple log

My late 2009 27" iMac gets stuck on the grey Apple logo when booting up.  It boots correctly when in safe mode. I have tried erasing the HD and re-installing from a USB installer. It says the install is complete, but after restarting it gets stuck on the Apple logo again.  This could possibly be an HD failure, but then why does Safe Mode still work and the USB install not work?  Any ideas?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
