hi, able to connect to my sons laptop but cant contect to home computer. have a westell versa link model 327w old as mud! i went int the 192.168.1.1 maybe more harm than help to try to connect. is there something on my home computer that i can click to contect to internet? internet is up but cant contect to that computer! help

Before I can tell you what to do, I must get more info.
Are you trying to connect this home computer to the Internet OR are you trying to allow users from the Internet to connect to that computer?
If you are trying to connect this home computer to the Internet:
What is the OS and Version?
If you know it is Windows but you don't know which version..
a) Go to Start -> Run.
b) Type in winver and press enter.
If you are trying to to allow users from the Internet to connect to that computer, not only what OS and Version does that computer use, what app are you trying to forward for?

  • Cannot connect remotely to home computer

I would appreciate some troubleshooting help, with regard to my inability to connect to my home computer from my iBook, which is in a remote location.
At home, I have an iMac connected to DSL, using a Belkin router. I have opened up port 548 on the router, which is supposed to allow access to my files from outside the home network. I have also turned on file sharing in system prefs.
At work, I'm connected to the Internet via a Windows-based network (but using an iBook). I go to Connect to Server under the Go menu, type in the afp address of my home iMac that was indicated under the home machine's sharing prefs., but then nothing happens. Well actually, I get a message that the server can't be found.
I know my home computer is on (I made sure it wouldn't sleep), and I opened up the port that is for afp, so what could be the problem?
    Thanks for your help.

Could be something with that port. Have you tried Remote Login through shh to see if that worked?
If you allow remote login, you can use SSH (Secure Shell) to log in to your computer from another location.
You can't use Telnet to log in to the computer.
Open System Preferences and click Sharing.
Click Services and select the Remote Login checkbox. Selecting Remote Login also also enables the secure FTP (sftp) service.
Now you can use an SSH client to log in from another computer.
For example, if your user name is steve and your computer's IP address is 10.1.2.33, you can open Terminal on another Mac OS X computer and type:
    ssh -l steve 10.1.2.33
Type "man ssh" at a Terminal shell prompt for more information.
See this Apple page for more:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh294.html
For Personal File Sharing do this:
    1. Be sure you are already connected to the Internet.
    2. Choose Connect to Server from the Go menu.
    3. In the Address field, type either the IP address or the DNS name of the computer to which you wish to connect (Note 4).
    4. Click Connect.
See this Apple Page for more.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107369
Also you may have a OSX firewall on or 3rd party firewall that is blocking this port.
Personal File Sharing uses 548, and 247 for it's ports.

Just bought my ipad and cant connect to my home wifi trying to do initial set up.
My wifi is working as my macbook runs off it..any ideas?

    1. Turn router off for 30 seconds and on again, this will refresh the IP address of the iPad.
    2. Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    3. Try changing router security e.g. WEP/WPA/WPA2
    4. Have you updated router firmware?

  • Need help connecting to my home computer from work

Hi, I am trying to connect to my home computer from my work computer, but I am not able to connect to it. I do CMD+K (from work) and type in the IP address (with & without smb:// &/or afp://), but home computer does not show up or the connection times out. My home computer is awake and file sharing & remote login are on. My home computer is an Imac 20" Intel Core 2 Duo connected via cable modem @ 12mbps running 10.5.2. My work computer is a Power Mac G5 Duel 2.7 running 10.4.11. Am I not able to connect because of the OS difference? Any help would be appreciated.
p.s. Sorry if this is a repost, but I couldn't find any posts with questions like this. Thanks.

"Screen Sharing" needs to be turned on. "Allow access" needs to be configured properly.
Can you connect to you computer from the office via command K using afp? Does the login window come up? What kind of a network do you have at the office? Are you behind a firewall there or is it a direct connection? (one of our labs at my university is tied down so tight you can't connect to any ip addresses outside the firewall unless the IT administrator puts that ip address into his little magic box,)
Last week I was using my laptop to connect with a computer across the hall. It would not recognize the ip address. I rebooted the laptop and it started working.
If you have the correct ip address and your office network is not behind some kind of heavy duty vpn firewall it may be your router at home.
Of course maybe Rush Limbaugh made a real point today in calling for Steve Jobs to recognize there are some bugs in Leopard and fixing them.

  • HT204023 can i use my i phone 4 as a internet modem to connect internet through the computer. where i got mobile internet plan through the operator.

can i use my i phone 4 as a internet modem to connect internet through the computer. where i got mobile internet plan through the operator. and i can surfe the net through the phone.

You can share your "cellular data" with the computer and other devices through "personal hotspot". You may use USB cable, Bluetooth or Wifi for sharing.
Reverse tethering (sharing internet connection of your computer with iPhone) is not supported.
Call your carrier and activate the cellular data/3G plan on your package. Note that "personal hotspot/internet tethering" is operator dependent feature. Confirm with your carrier or go through this article to see if your carrier is listed and offers this service.

  • My ipad has lost it's connection to my home computer

I was using face time on my ipad and I lost my internet connection. I can't connect to my home internet. There is a long symbol next to my home computer name and how do I reconnect?

"There is a long symbol next to my home computer name and how do I reconnect?"
Next to your home computer name where - on the iPad? Or do you mean next to the home network name? What long symbol? I don't use FaceTime so maybe you are referencing some thing in the app that I'm not familiar with.
Anyway, if you lost your internet connection try rebooting your router. Unplug it for about 30 seconds and then plug it in again.

  • I updated my iphone and now I cant connect to my home wifi

Ive updated my iphone 4s to the new software and now I can no longer connect to my home wifi

    Hello there indianafran,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!
I recommend these troublehshooting steps from the article named iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections found here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398:
Be sure you're in range of your Wi-Fi router (access point).
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi off and on. If your W-Fi setting is dimmed, follow these steps.
Confirm that your Wi-Fi router and cable or DSL modem are connected to power, turned on, and connected to the Internet. If not, refer to your network administrator or Internet service provider (ISP) for assistance.
    Restart your iOS device.
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and locate the Wi-Fi network to which you're connected.
    Tap and Forget this Network.
Try to connect to your desired Wi-Fi network.
Note: You may need to enter your Wi-Fi password again if your network requires one.
Turn your Wi-Fi router off and on2. If your ISP also provides cable or phone service, check with them before attempting this step to avoid interruption of service.
Update your device to the latest version of software.
Update your Wi-Fi router to the latest firmware2. For AirPort Base Stations, install updates using the AirPort Utility.
If that does not fix the issue then these steps near the bottom of the article is where I would go next:
Unable to connect to a Wi-Fi network
Verify that you're attempting to connect to your desired Wi-Fi network.
Make sure you're entering your Wi-Fi password correctly. Passwords may be case sensitive and may contain numbers or special characters.
Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note: This will reset all network settings including:
previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords
    recently used Bluetooth accessories
    VPN and APN settings
    All the very best,
    Sterling

I bought 2 (32gig) ipod touches last week and have a strange problem with the wif fi dropping out. One of the ipod's works perfectly with great range and little drop out, the other identical ipod touch continuously drops the wireless signal and I keep having to log on constantly, which is a real pain as I am using the ipod for home automation and media control. Has anyone any ideas here please ?

  • My pro cant connect internet

I need some help here. I can't connect to internet when I start my pro, but it shows  full WiFi signal and my WIfi is fine.  After I diconnect wifi and connnect it again is ok to use. The same thing happend every time when I start my pro.  Could someone know this problem?

Check to make sure that you can ping your router as well as www.google.com in Network Utility.
    Open System Preferences > Network > Wifi > Advanced > TCP/IP
Take note of the router number
Open Mac HD > Applications > Utilities > Network Utility
    Open the Ping tab
Ping your router number 10 times
If you can ping your router with 0% packet loss, then ping www.google.com 10 times
If you can ping www.google.com with 0% packet loss, you are in fact connected to the internet, and the issue is likely Safari and DNS (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408) or Safari and plugins (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3230)
    Additional steps:
Power-cycle your modem and router for 1 minute, respectively.
    Reset your SMC (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964).
Create a new location in System Preferences > Network > Assist Me > Assistant.
Rename /library/preferences/systemconfiguration/ to SystemConfiguration.old and restart the computer.
    Let us know what happens.

  • Cant access internet on desktop computer

My laptop works but when i try and connect to the internet on my desktop computer it says that the user name and password is wrong. Someone please help me. By the way i have windows 98 on the desktop compter. I have the wireless WRT54G router

It sounds as though you have 98 configured as a PPOe connection. Try creating a new connection for your desktop. Use Automatic settings for connection rather than PPOe. This may help. You may have to BIND TCIP to the network adapter rather than DIALUP. WIN 98 is tricky because you have to know how to get to the bindings. Are you trying to connect via wired connection to the ports on the router, or is it wireless you are using on the desktop. Windows 98 is not very good for this. You might want to consider upgrading to XP, obviously VISTA would be too much for this computer you are using. Good luck.
