Cant copy to disk

Everything is up to date on my ipod. firmware, and running itunes 7. I sync my music and about throught 250 songs I get a "attempting to copy to the disk "martell" failed. An unknown error occured (-69). What is causing this, and how can I fix it. I've restored, and it's given the same error.

this link will tell you what to do about error -69
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302684
so, if only 250 songs get synched, then song number
251 is corrupted and you need to replace this song
I followed that, but it seems that isn't the case. None of the files that would be called corrupted, aren't and have been put on other ipods(not from my comp, but same file). I'll restart my comp and unplug my USBs besides the ipod to see if that works. Could it be this new itunes 7, it seems to be causing problems I've heard.

I have the latest Mac Air 13" and I have a Seagate 500MB external hard disk I cant copy or Cut any files on the hard disk and I cant even delete any files. I have the settings as Read and Write in the get info tab. Please helpand also note that my hard drive was formatted on a Windows 7 Laptop.

thats the problem, its in MSDos (Fat) or NTFS for Windows.
    Options.....
    1. offload all that data on the HD onto your PC, THEN format the HD in EXFAT for use on BOTH PC and Mac for read/write.....then reload all (or as you need) that data back onto the HD
    2. get another HD, and format it for Mac OSX extended journaled.
    FAT32 (File Allocation Table)
Read/Write FAT32 from both native Windows and native Mac OS X.
    Maximum file size: 4GB.
    Maximum volume size: 2TB
You can use this format if you share the drive between Mac OS X and Windows computers and have no files larger than 4GB.
    NTFS (Windows NT File System)
    Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X
To Read/Write/Format NTFS from Mac OS X, here are some alternatives:
For Mac OS X 10.4 or later (32 or 64-bit), install Paragon (approx $20) (Best Choice for Lion)
Native NTFS support can be enabled in Snow Leopard and Lion, but is not advisable, due to instability.
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support NTFS
    Maximum file size: 16 TB
    Maximum volume size: 256TB
You can use this format if you routinely share a drive with multiple Windows systems.
HFS+     ((((MAC FORMAT)))  (Hierarchical File System, a.k.a. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Don't use case-sensitive)
    Read/Write HFS+ from native Mac OS X
Required for Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! backups of Mac internal hard drive.
To Read HFS+ (but not Write) from Windows, Install HFSExplorer
    Maximum file size: 8EiB
    Maximum volume size: 8EiB
You can use this format if you only use the drive with Mac OS X, or use it for backups of your Mac OS X internal drive, or if you only share it with one Windows PC (with MacDrive installed on the PC)
EXFAT (FAT64)    ------Can read/write from both PC and Mac
Supported in Mac OS X only in 10.6.5 or later.
Not all Windows versions support exFAT.

AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support exFAT
    Maximum file size: 16 EiB
    Maximum volume size: 64 ZiB
You can use this format if it is supported by all computers with which you intend to share the drive.  See "disadvantages" for details.

iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
So I spent entire day yesterday moving files from that 1TB NTFS drive to other storage. Then I used Disk Utility to format it as Mac OS Extended (journaled).
Then I tried again to copy iPhoto Library from MBP to that drive. And got error -36 message. Then I got a message that item named "iPhoto Library" already exists on that disk, therefore Copy can not proceed. What's interesting is that now I can not delete that item either (due to permissions issue).
Weird, as I am the owner of the file. I also changed the permissions on iPhoto Library with IPLM to RWX for all users (Owner, Group and Everyone). And the same permissions are set on the storage drive.
Now I am trying to rebuild the library with IPLM and store it on the storage drive - but it takes forever. Hopefully, then I will be able to rename the original on MBP to iPhoto Library.old and follow the rest of the instructions to establish a new library location.
And who said Macs were easier then Windows? All my wife wanted is to have pictures off-loaded from her HD.

  • I cant copy photo's out of iPhoto, I select them all but if I want to paste them for example to my nas or a folder on my macbook, the paste option wont appear. I tried with export, didnt work either. It used to work, but now all of a sudden it wont.

I cant copy photos out of iphoto (event), I can copy them but if I want to paste them in another folder on my macbook or nas hdd, I dont have the option "paste" If I select some of the pic's it sometimes works.I also tried with export them but didnt work either.
I used to load them into iphoto manged them and then simly copied them and saved them on my nas and/or my macbook's hdd in a folder, but now it wont work. I have now thousents of photo i cant copy, its a mess....
it might be a problem with an update as I had also a mess with my music after updating to the latest itunes.
has anybody an idea how to fix this??

That warning sign comes up when iPhoto has broken the link/file path to the original photos.  Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

how do i restore missing files for i work 09 as it is asking me to reinstall but cant find the disk?

    Hello Jessica472,
It sounds like you need to recover some missing files but do not have access to the iWork '09 disc you used to install it. If you have a Time Machine backup and know what files you need, you can use the "Restoring specific files or folders" section of the following article to restore them:
Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac
If you do not have Time Machine, you will need the disc to reinstall the software suite.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

    help!!

Max. path length is 255 characters, or perhaps there are some non-displaying characters hidden there. Try dropping a song you want to add to iTunes into the Automatically to iTunes folder to see if that works any better.

I had the same problem. And to think I actually HESITATED at installing the update. Oh wait... this happened AFTER the update. Funny how often that happens, eh? But I digress...
Anyway, I had two errors- initially the iPod stated my music library was somewhere else, and did I want to sync to that library. When I said yes, it reverted then to the "attempting to copy to disk"error. Further, iTunes showed that my iPod on the iTunes was EMPTY. However, my actual iPod hadn't lost any data. Confused yet? So am I.
*Last ditch effort- I went back in, and updated all my permissions, did a permission repair and then a permission verify.
    * Also did a disk verify on the iPod to make sure it wasn't sick.
*I also drug a new song into my library.
*Changed from the USB plugin to the firewire. (Although I did this earlier in the day, and hadn't seen a noticeble change)
    * Opened the bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. (should have done that a few hours ago)
When my first pop up asked about did I want to sync to the mystery persons library, I said yes. (At the worst, I have all my music and could reimport all 30G of it, if necessary.) And immediately, the sync began, and began appropriately. However, it IS re-syncing every single song I had on the iPod to begin with.
I suspect something nasty happened in the iTunes update, ever since the intel thing happened, the updates have been a bit sketchy. I really like Apple products, but I've gone through 3 iPods due to software meltdowns, and it's a bit frustrating.
    Good luck!

I had music that i copied from disks into itunes on another computer, I no longer have that computer. Is there a way to get that music back from itunes?

If you failed to maintain a backup copy, then you would have to import the disks again.

  • "Attempting to copy to disk" error when syncing

I am having an issue with syncing my iPhone today. For some reason when I am syncing, when it gets to the point of the check "Finding Purchased Items", I get an error message stating "Attempting to copy to disk LAPTOP HARD DRIVE failed. You do not have enough access priviledges for this operation".
I checked the .xml files in iTunes and I do have all priviledges across the board, yet it is still coming up with the message.
It seems though that the sync is completing despite the error, it's just a bloody annoyance.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Copying a disk which has a boot camp partition

Colleague has an iMac with a boot camp partition, and the disk has failed.  It won't boot off the mac partition, although the windows partition works fine.  He bought a new 1T disk and we are trying to copy his disk on to it, and will then install the new disk into the iMac.
So it's booted up using the SnowLeopard install disk and I am running disk utility.  First I tried to partition the disk into something that looks like the partition scheme on the current disk -- big partition for os x, little partition for windows, although big & little are 750GB vs 250GB as opposed to the smaller version on the 260GB original.
Then I tried to use the Restore to go from the old bootcamp partition to the new MS-DOS (fat) partition on the new drive.  This failed.  First it resized the fat partition down to an ever-so-slightly smaller partition than the NTFS original, and then generated an error because the partition is too small.
    How do we do this?

    1. Do you have a TM backup of the OSX which came from this "failed" disk? It may just be a matter of reinstalling OSX too work around bacd blocks?
My boss tried that about a year ago, but it failed again after not too long.
    2. What is the failure when switching to OSX from Windows?
Not sure.  Now when I option-boot the machine I can't see either partition -- I can see the installer dvd and the new drive in its external enclosure.
    3. Windows can be installed only on the internal disk, which is a Windows restriction that BC enforces. Apple allows OS to installed on external drives. Ask Gates/Ballmer/Nadella why?
    4. Yes, you can get data of the disk, not matter how it is connected, internal or external. It is tricky to take a Volume and move it. Can I suggest an investment in Winclone to backup and restore (http://www.twocanoes.com/products/mac/winclone) Windows?
    5. Yes, but I would recommend putting Bootcamp Windows back as BC/Windows, rather than virtualizing it using Parallels.
Well moving the new disk in to the iMac is one of the tasks we need to accomplish, so we can do it now.  My plan was to use dd to move the data from the partition on the old drive to the partition on the new drive, once we can get Boot Camp Assistant to create it.  Winclone looks like a great product, but it's $29.  Parallels is only $79, and if a disk fails or you migrate to new hardware all of the Parallels vms come over effortlessly using Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant.

  • Work around "cannot copy to disk.....cannot be read from or written to.

While copying large files(movies or large amounts of music)to the iPod touch the error message" disk cannot be read from or written to" appears. Here is a work around for the failure.
    1. Run the latest version of iTunes and connect the iPod. Perform the following after the failure (allow one failure to occur and repeat this after each occurence) This is only good for one movie or one large grouping of music files. Eject the iPod and allow 30 seconds after the plug is pulled before reattaching the plug to the iPod. Once the summary window appears you are ready to start.
    2. In the movie tab behind the summary remove SYNC Movies check from the box.
In the Music tab remove the SYNC Music check from the box.
    3. On the summary tab uncheck "manually manage music" in the options section. It will ask if you are sure, choose OK. Click "Apply" in the bottom right corner. Allow the iPod to try to SYNC... a message will appear explaining that there is not enough disk space, choose "OK".
    4. Check "manually manage music" in the options section. Click "Apply" in the bottom right corner.
    5. Drag and drop the selection of music or the movie over to the iPod icon on the left side of the screen under "Devices". The transfer should start and the progress graphic will start in the upper status window.
***I have only been able to move/ copy one movie at a time and one large music selection. When attempting the second transfer the error message returns and you have to start the process over. I tryed restoring, updating iTunes, different cables, updating XP, different USB ports, countless system restarts and threatening to smash it if it didn't work. I spoke with APPLE Tech support and they are aware of the problem and should be attempting to correct it. My iPod is @ its default settings. I have had no problems with single music files transfering but I have had it fail on as little as three in a group. Good Luck and I hope this helps.

Here is some more info on this issue. I've been having the same problem - I've tried disconnecting all other USB devices, making sure to plug into the back-side USB 2.0 port, I even went and bought a PCI card 2-port USB hub and tried that, but could never sync movies or multiple songs (usually less than 50 songs). Today, I was able to transfer 2 movies and a TV show and about 100 songs and the one thing that was different was that I was doing a video conversion in the background with FFMPEG (taking up about 90% CPU), so iTunes only had about 10% CPU while doing the sync.
Unfortunately, as I started typing this message, a third movie transfer just failed with the "cannot copy to disk..." read/write error. Oh well, just thought I'd get the info out, as this is an exteremely frustrating issue, and hopefully the more info we have we'll eventually be able to figure it out.

  • Attempting to copy to disk failed.

I was using my iPod in cold weather the other night. The battery died and when it warmed back up the screen was in grayscale and it was in "disk mode". I have since restored it several times and am trying to sync it with iTunes. I keep getting an error message "Attempting to copy to disk failed. You do not have enough access privileges for this operation". The iPod was syncing just fine prior to the cold crash. I tried changing the permissions in my iTunes music library and xml file. Help?

    First, reset the iPod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320
and restart the Mac with the iPod connected; then try it again.
If that does not help, connect the iPod to the Mac. With iTunes not running, run Disk Utility. Does the iPod's hard drive appear in the Disk Utility sidebar? If so, select the iPod's DRIVE, not the volume indented under the drive, in the sidebar and go to the Erase tab. Set the format type to +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+ and erase the iPod's drive.
If the erase completes successfully, quit Disk Utility and run iTunes. Immediately use the Restore button to install and initialize the iPod's software. You can then set it up and sync it as desired.
