Cant create partition for bootcamp

I open up Boot Camp Assistant, select Install Windows 7 then i divide my windows partition to 350 GB and click Install with the Windows 7 disk inserted... but it still says wait for the disk to be recognised and doesnt go through...
If i remember correctly, on Snow Leopard it was first creating the partition and then it was working perfectly...
Any clues?

Are you referring to the Windows disc Boot Camp isn't recognising? Perhaps try putting the disc back in the disc drive and then try opening Boot Camp Assistant and continue with the installation of Windows through the Boot Camp Assistant. In order to install Windows, the Boot Camp Assistant would ask you how much space you wish to allocate to the Windows install (for you to use once Windows is fully installed). If you set "divide equally" it would shrink the existing Mac OS X partition of the hard drive and create a new partition on the extra space that would then be available to use, which it would create a Windows-compatible partition for Windows to use. So 2 partitions would be on the hard drive now. So when you launch Boot Camp again, you can go to the "Install Windows 7" option straight away, as I'm presuming Boot Camp already created the separate Windows-compatible partition on the hard drive.

There are differences between each Mac and what the original configuration of the Mac is/was. If your Mac originally came with an Optical drive, burning the ISO to a DVD and using it will work. Hardware modifications like Optibay will cause problems. Modifying Bootcamp info.plist will cause problems. Disk Utility partitioning will cause problems. A custom Hybrid MBR will cause problems. External Optical drives are unlikely to work. There is long litany of grief.

  • Strange error when Bootcamp attempts to create partition for Windows

I get a strange error when I tell Bootcamp to create a partition for Windows. I get to the Create a Partition stage. I select 20GB for Windows leaving 91GB (39GB free) for OS X. I then click Partition and it gives me the following error
*The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved.*
Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again.
My disk is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), I have closed all applications (besides Bootcamp Assistant) and I have even restarted and tried again to see if that might help. Nothing. I can't get it to partition. Any thoughts? Can I partition my disk manually through disk utility and then select it in Bootcamp?

  • Created partition without bootcamp, now i can't delete it

    Hi Everyone,
I was trying to install Windows 8 on my Late 2011 MBP and it was not possible with Bootcamp. I tried it and got an interesting error like 'No bootable device...'. Then i decided to try to install Windows 8 without Bootcamp. Created a partition by Disk Utility on OS X, booted by Windows 8 Installer USB stick, deleted and formatted the partition by Windows 8 Installer. But still, i was not able to install Windows 8, don't know why.
Now, my problem is that i don't care about Windows 8 no more, i just want to merge the Mac partition and empty partition but i can't. In disk utility (in OS X), i don't see any allocated space, but if i boot by Windows 8 Installer, there are partitions or allocated spaces created by it and i can see all the partitions. I don't know what to do, how can i merge the partitions for using it in OS X? I think i need some serious help.
If there is nothing to do, i will create a backup of my files in an external drive and delete the internal drive. Will it work? But i don't want to do this since i have lots of files and my Mac uses usb 2.0 port.
P.S: I think it is not important but specifications of my Mac are:
Late 2011 MacBook Pro 15'', i7 2.4 GHz, AMD HD6770M 1 GB, 8 GB of RAM, Samsung EVO 840 120 GB SSD, Hitachi Travelstar 7k1000 1 TB HD, no optical drive.

Using Bootcamp Assistant re-arranges your partitions in a specific order, which is EFI/ESP, OSX, OSX Recovery HD, BC/Windows. If you do not use BCA to remove Windows but use Disk Utility to manipulate the BC/Windows partition, BC/Windows can be deleted, but Recovery HD will not let you merge disk space back into OSX partition. BCA while removing also rearranges Recovery HD to emerge the freed space back into your main OSX partition.
This is why it is recommended that DU should not be used to change partitions, if BCA is also used.
BCA creates a Hybrid MBR, while a straight W8 installer uses EFI to boot on 2013+ Macs, but prior Macs, like the 2011 MBPs do not fully support W8 direct installation.
In either case, as tbirdvet suggests, the recourse now is to back up, use Internet Recovery (Command+Opt+R - you must see a spinning globe), erase your internal disk, and restore from backup.
Please also see OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support.
Thanks, i think it seems like this is the only solution, luckily, since the system is on the ssd i don't have to reinstall the OS. Now i am creating a backup then i will erase the disk and load my backup.
Since you have two physical drives, being treated as two separate disks, depending on which disk you were manipulating for Windows, you may have to erase one or both drives.
If the second disk (HDD) was your Windows destination, and you removed the original built-in Optical drive, BCA set the system to boot from the unavailable Optical drive which resulted in 'No bootable device' error.

  • Help? Trying to create partition for Windows...

Okay so I'm trying to create a partition for Windows XP and I go to the Boot Camp Assistant and I have it set to 32 GB and I click partition and it says that I have to "repair the disk." So I go to the Disk Utitlity and I tried verifying my Mac HD and it couldn't even verify. Here's the description:

The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.

Someone please tell me what does this all mean and tell me how to make the error go away

    Hello akl88066
To repair the Macintosh volume, you will need to boot and make the repairs from the install disk as described in the link below!

  • Error when trying to partition for Bootcamp

    Evening everyone,
I use parallels at the moment but have a piece of software which isn't quite behaving itself. As I have just upgraded to leopard, I thought I would see if setting up Bootcamp and running it in there would solve the problem. I freed up plenty of disk space but when trying to create a 10GB partition in the setup assistant I got this error:
'The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved. Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again.'
I don't know much about the technical side of my computer - partitioning and formatting etc so that message sounds all very scary to me. Is it saying I need to wipe my hard drive and re-format it? It is already formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled). If so, can I do that from my Time Machine backups? it sounds like a really drastic action. Also, could this be anything to do with my current Parallels software?
Thanks very much for your time, any help would be much appreciated!

when you say "plenty of disk space" how much exactly is that?
that message indicates that bootcamp assistant couldn't find big enough chunk of contiguous free space to create a bootcamp partition. this happens due to disk fragmentation.
at the minimum you should boot from the leopard install DVD and repair the hard drive (repair disk, not permissions).
If you still want to install bootcamp you need to defrag your hard drive. there are several ways to do it. you can use 3rd party software like idefrag. You can clone your disk to an external drive using a 3rd party cloner like CCCloner or Superduper. then boot from the clone and clone it back to the main drive. Or, if you have time machine, you can restore your system from a TM backup. that will also defrag your hard drive. To do that boot from the install DVD and select 'restore system from backup" from the Utilities menu at the top. that seems to be the suggestion the message you saw makes.
also, keep in mind that you need to keep plenty of free space (>15%) on your OS X partition to avoid disk fragmentation problems.

  • Unable to create partition for solaris 10

I have windows 7 installed in my vaio, and want to install solaris 10. I have 190 gb of space. Which I divided as
    1. 40 gb for windows
    2. 65 gb
    3. 65 gb
    4. 20 gb unallocated
I want to install Solaris in unallocated space. when I try to install solaris 10. It shows only two partition 40 gb and 150 gb. I am new to Solaris.. please help.

hello, you don't have to use hme0, that may not be your NIC type. your NIC appears to be realtek adapter. download the drivers first [try here: http://homepage2.nifty.com/mrym3/taiyodo/rf-1.0.9.tar.gz] install them, then your NIC will have a name like rt0. you can then proceed to set its interface.i hope ifconfig -a, blah, blah is ok with u. If the adapter is ok then you can now do the zones - they are just automatic no strugling!
you can also find the drivers from realtek website at -- ftp://152.104.238.194/cn/nic/rtl8139abcd8130810xseries/rtls211.zip
here are sample instructions on how to install the driver
    How to install Solaris/x86 version
    1. This is the version 2.1.1 RTL8139 serials driver for Solaris/x86
    version.
    2. It support Speed/Duplex-Force mode, you can set it through rtls.conf file.
    3. It supports 3 PCI-VID_DID cards, VID_10EC_DID_8139 for Realtek's
native, VID_1113_DID_1211 for Accton and VID_1186_DID_1301 for
    D-Link in the install script.
    4. Install method:
    a. Power-off your PC and insert your RTL8139 adapter.
    b. Boot-up you Solaris/x86 and login as "root".
    c. Copy the "rtls211.zip" into the temporary location in your
    hard-driver.
    d. UNZIP the "rtls211.zip" and you will get 3 files, "rtls", "rtls.conf" and
    "Install".
    e. If the PCI ID for your RTL8139 adapter is not VID_10EC_DID_8139
or VID_1113_DID_1211 or VID_1186_DID_1301, you can modify the
"Install" file to match your PCI ID, VID_ABCD_DID_WXYZ for example,
    modify the "pci1186,1301" to "pciABCD,WXYZ".
    f. Run the "Install" from File Manager to install the driver, and
it will modify 2 files, "/etc/name_to_major" and "/etc/driver_aliases"
    g. You need to create the "/etc/hostname.rtls0" file and modify some
other related files to make your networking environments working well.
    h. You can execute "touch /reconfigure" then "shutdown -i5 -g0", so that
Solaris will reboot and scan changed hardware environment.
    i. You can execute "ifconfig -a" to make sure the RTL8139 driver is up.
    success. bye

  • Creating partition for leopard installation

    Hi All
My Mbox no longer works on Snow Leopard. Digidesign have refused to create drivers...b*stards....!!
So, I am trying to create a new partition on my HD with Leopard 10.5 in order to get around this and am having major problems doing so...
Before I list the problems, is my MBP 2.4 restricted from doing this? Will it let me install an older operating system on the new partition, or not? I've seen references to not being able to install Tiger etc, is it the same in this situation?
    Thanks
    Al

If your MBP OEM disc has 10.5.x you are fine.
If you had Leo 10.5.x on it and working prevously, sure, why not?
And you can always try on a spare external first.
Should definitely have backups first, then just shrink your current partition to make room (if it will A) leave enough on SL to run and be safe; B) large enough for Leo and to hold your applications and data.
The 2nd external drive - maybe clone what you have now to USB etc and insure that works first, then take that off line, and wipe the internal drive and try installing Leo.
Shame that a 'mature' OS that had two years is too old and not an option, or that it is taking a year and lack of drivers.
That said, there are other strong Mac vendors that are STILL working on getting 10.6 drivers out, through no fault, other than the rules changed and it is work, a lot, to getting 32/64-bit drivers out.

Ok, will continue this discussion. Only with the clear discussion our understandings/assumptions will be clarified perfectly.
    First: - Shipping conditions,
are you sure, only "shipping conditions- 10 ( immediate delivery  - X) controls the automatic delivery generation in case of "Cash sales/ Rush order"-
    what my understanding is,
immediate delivery - X, is triggered delivery creation, but this control/setting is somewhere in some programm it is hard coded.
Only with this VOV8-screen, i dont think automatic delivery creation is happening- ( though its a pre-condtion to activate that code to create immediate delivery), i dont know , am thinking too deep.

i am trying to make a application for WRQ Reflections.
I have done the administrator install etc for reflections.

If I go to CMD and typ WRQdeploy.exe test.ini it also installs properly
    If I create a file called install.cmd and put WRQdeploy.exe test.ini
i can run the file and it installs
My question is how do I turn that into an APP
when I just create a manual app and select the Path to executable file: to
    z:\APPS\Reflection12\install.cmd
When I run the app from my NAL it launches the cmd prompt and the Windows Installer box comes up and the install never starts.
ive tried creating a MSI app object and selecting the MSI as the package and then in path to executable I put z:\APPS\Reflection12\setup.exe and under common - Transform I point it to Test.MST
How can I Deploy this app?
    Thanks

Then just create a simple app object that runs WRQdeploy.exe and put

  • Unable to partition for bootcamp

I posted earlier about this issue.
Summary:  I am unable to partition my main HDD on my rMBP.  It said I need to repair in recovery mode.  In recovery, I verified and repaired, and it said it was all good.  Tried again, and still failed.
So now I tried turning to a different disk utility other than the built in one, and some said that it doesn't work with encrypted drives.  Could that be why it wasn't working?  Because the drive is encrypted with FileVault?

Thank you, Linc. Is there a way to determine what OS was installed with the machine when it was first shipped?
I inherited the machine from a previous employee so, unfortunately, no one seems to have any details on where the software is.

  • Help creating partitions in RAID 0 Volume

I have 2 Seagate Barracuda 160 GB SATA HDDs running on the ICH5R (865PE mobo). I created one large RAID 0 Volume. I was about to create 3 partitions on Win XP using Partiton Magic 8, but then I noticed that PM does not support Software RAID I searched the web for information on how to create partitions for this kind of setup, but found nothing conclusive. Some people say you can create partitons using software RAID, some say I'll be asking for trouble if I do. Has anyone done this successfully with this kind of setup? Thanks.

This is your thread, so you can do what you want. Since it's a new topic, you might get better response by starting a new thread since some who have viewed this one may not bother rechecking it.
The ICH5R is not a hardware raid solution. It requires a driver and uses the CPU for processing. True hardware raid will cost you 2-3 times what this board cost you. I would start a new thread and I'm sure someone like Vango44 who uses raid will give you the answer you are looking for.
