Cant download free apps?

Ever since Ive added a visa to my account and used it, it no longer allows me to download free apps. Basically, it asks for another visa, crippling my opportunities to do anything in the App or ITunes store. I vividly remember I used to be able to use my account with no payment method.

This may sound like a dumb question, but can you still download paid apps with the credit card? Even if you want to download free apps, if you have a credit card on file in iTunes, it still have to be kept current and all of the billing details (like the billing address) must be correct and up to date.
Did your credit card expire? Is the 3 digit security code on the back correct?

You can create an iTune and App Store account without credit card details
1. Sign out of current Apple ID if you are sign-in to one (important)
2. Go to App Store and select a free app
3. Tap INSTALL APP
4. Create New Apple ID
5. Confirm Your Country
6. Agree with Terms and Conditions
7. Fill in your Apple ID and Password (you must create a new Apple ID; don't use your old Apple ID)
8. Create and answer your secret question
9. Select NONE for Payment Method
10. Fill in Billing Address
11. Submit application for new Apple ID
12. Wait for verification email
13. When email arrive, verify your account
14. Start downloading your free apps

thanks for your reply couldnt figure out how to reply my ipad is brand new for school straight out of the box otherr classmates downloaded the free facebook youtube google gmail the popular free apps and i cant im sighned into my apple act i havent put in credit card info cuz i dont have one or have plans to use or download amd apps that arent free when i try download it askes for my password i type it in and it accepts it then after a few mins it will say this app can not b downloaded at ths time try again or be done if i try again same responce over amd over the icon from that app will appear on my home page and will either say working or it just is there and says nothing until i open it then does same thing all over again im either using my schools wifi to run it or my wifi at home either place its the same thing over and over. and none of other students have had this issue at all there is an app im supposed to dwonload and use for school it willnot allow me to do so i have to search it each time in class in the safari when other students download and have an icon to open the app for them ive been told this ipadmini is supposed to be really easy quick and poweful and so far i disagree been nothing but trouble cant watch youtube videos skips so bad or just wnt ever load

You need a valid credit card info linked to your Apple ID.
Settings > iTunes & App Store > Apple ID: > View Apple ID > sign in and check your payment info.
You will not be charged for free apps.
If you do not want to use the credit card, you can buy an iTunes gift card.

Is it an account that hasn't been used in the store yet then how did you create it ? Unless the instructions on this page are followed when creating an account : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534
then credit card details will need to be entered before the account can be used to download any item from the store.
If you are being prompted to review the account then you could see if this post by mountaingoatgirl lets you do so without needing to enter credit card details : https://discussions.apple.com/message/24303054
If not then you will either need to enter credit card details (you should be able to remove them after entering them) or create a new account (and use the instructions on that HT2534 page when creating it). If you do create a new account and you want to use the same email address then you will need to replace it on that account first e.g. by tapping on it in Settings > iTunes & App Store on your phone and logging into it, via the Store > View Account menu option on your computer's iTunes or via http://appleid.apple.com

i run out of money on my prepaycard and the free apps cant be download. i have to choose how im going to pay, can read mastercard, visa and amex, but the "none" doset exist so i cant choose it...HELP!!!

How are you accessing your payment details e.g. just by logging into the account or are you being prompted to log in when trying to download an app ?
You should be able to change your payment details by logging into your account (not when trying to download something) : Change or remove your payment information from your iTunes Store account (Apple ID) - Apple Support

You must have a valid method of payment even for free apps, in case you make in-app purchases (you won't be charged). You can use an iTunes gift card.

okay so i used a visa gift card i had gotten as a payment method to use to download music on itunes and then finally it ran out of money. then later when i tried to download an app it said "sign in required" so i signed in then it said my payment method isnt working but i have no other meathod and i cant cancel the one i have so i tried again and it keeps saying the same thing.. it wont let me download anything.. what do i do?

You probably have a past due balance in the iTunes store. If so, you'll have to enter a new payment type, or use an iTunes gift card to resolve the outstanding balance before you can proceed to download free apps, or install app updates.

Apple wants you to risk your number out on the internet maybe, they don't care about customers. They state that it is for validation of your account, but this make no sense as you already have entered a username and password, which seems to work fine on any other site. They basically want your wallet to be held hostage, even for updating already installed apps (this should make you think). This is bad in my book, and I think Apple should change this action ASAP. It is not right and they know it, but greed seems to be the game for them I guess. You should not have to risk your credit card number being transmitted across the internet just to update or install a free app. Android market place does not do things this way.

Yes, if you setup the account with a payment method, you need a valid payment method in your account even for free apps and app updates.

Unable to "purchase" or download free APP updates

I am trying to download free App updates on my iphone but it says unable to purchase try again later. so i waited a couple days, and it still wont work. and itunes wont update them either. I have the 2.2 software ive tryed to restart it i cant figure it out. anyone know what the problemo is?

I had the same problem. I just fixed it. There are several posts on many forums addressing the "5002" error that date back to the IT8 roll out. My solution started with the post linked below.

Thank you for posting this work around. My iPhone 3G has been unable to update apps as well as iTunes 8 running on my MBPro. I followed your instructions to the letter, but still have the same symptoms with “5002″ error. Next I backed up my Mobile Apps folder again (after the reinstall (I kept the original backup as well)), deleted all, and synced with my iPhone 3G. At this point only the apps from my phone are in the iTunes Mobile Apps. folder. No success. I still get the “5002″error in iTunes, and “unable to purchase” when updating apps using iPhone.
Any suggestions?

After an extensive Error “5002″ Google search, I discovered the post linked below.

I logged onto my iTunes account, and discovered that there was now a blank Credit Card security/CCV field next to the CC number field. Also there was a weird message in red stating that my address did not seem to be traditional for my area, and required editing or some such nonsense. I deleted a few characters in the address field, re-typed them exactly as they were, filled in my CC CCV code, and clicked done. All problems fixed!
