Cant downsize mail window .

Have just been converted to a new mac so far so good apart from one problem . I can press the green button on the top left of screen when the mail box window is open but it will not alter screen size. It takes up the whole screen and I would like it to go smaller . Any help appreciated . All other screens operate fine . I can use the little vertical lines at the bottom left hand corner but this just drags part of the screen over to the left .

my next suggestion would be a tad more drastic and would entail trashing the app and re-installing it. you will have to get Pacifist in order to extract the mail installer package file from your Mac OS X install disk.
apparently, this is a rather simple operation, however, i've never done it myself and so i'm a bit wary to coach you through the process, lest i make things worse for you.
i'd understand if you didn't want to go this route (though it would be one giant leap for you on your way to get to know your Mac better).
Alternatively, you can learn to live with the +status quo+. the little yellow button will reduce any open window to the dock. you can bring back that window by clicking on it in the dock area. or, on the keyboard, the key combination +command (the Apple) & tab+ will let you browse through all active windows (similar to the +alt & tab+ key combination in windows).

Mail window does not close anymore

When I press the red dot or type CMD-W, the mail window does not close anymore. It just stays open, everything else works as usual. Any ideas, how to close the window again?

Look at the bottom frame of the Mail window; it may display a small dot thingie in the middle of its bar, something like this -
If so, try clicking on that dot and dragging upward.
If that works, you should have both panes present again. You can adjust the size of the window as a whole by dragging the bottom-right corner (where the hash marks are).

Help! My ipad mail window wont stay open to read mail?

ipad has been sending & recieving mail with no problems but suddenly is recieving mail but when mail window keeps shutting down & won't stay open??? Any ideas???

Have you tried closing the Mail app completely ? From the home screen (i.e. not with Mail 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work then you could try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

I have out of viewing space in my Mail window with my 3 ..mac email address and all the rules and smart folders I have created. I am about to start a small business and will have to have 3-5 non .mac email address. I would like to use OSX Mail to view those account on my computer but I do not want them to be in same window as my personal accounts. Can I create another Mail window for this. If not is there another good mail software program I can use on my mac to keep the business and personal emails separate? Thanks

Delete button in main Mail window doesn't seem to work with update to 10.5.

Hi, I just upgraded to OSX 10.5.8 and now the delete button in the main mail window does not seem to be working. The other buttons work, and if you hit the delete key that works. The delete button at the top of a message window also seems to continue to work. This is strange behavior. I will try to reboot again to see if that helps.

I have a new imac with osx 10.6.8 and can't get letter box to open in the mail window with 3 columns. I have downloaded the latest version and it also didn't open in 10.6.7. Any ideas?

Letterbox downloads and installs and is enabled, but does not produce the 3 columns in the mail window. I had the same problem with 10.6.7 and now 10.6.8. The download is the latest version (0.24b9) and the forums indicated that it works with both osx versions. I have tried deleting the letterbox plug-in and then reinstalling, but still no luck with the 3 column mail page. Any ideas would be most welcome. Thanks

i just fixed this on my machine running 10.6.8. the typical workaround is to add appropriate UUIDs, which get updated with each new os build, and break plugins (see here). Follow those instructions, but instead of adding the UUIDs they suggest for 10.6.7, add these (I found them on my machine running 10.6.8, and they work):

for fixing on os x version 10.6.7, this may help (though letterbox 0.24b9 should work already).
i emailed the author (aaron harnly, harnly.net) about this, but haven't heard back (a few days). to be sure, i am quite grateful, as i think we all are, for his excellent plugin, and this workaround is quite simple for dealing with updates.

You can install Windows 8 on your computer because it can run Windows 8, but you can't install the Windows support software that makes Windows run properly, so probably things like the Wi-Fi card, the sound and the graphic card may not work without these drivers.
That's just an Apple restriction. Apple has decided to give Windows 8 support to the most recent Macs, leaving old Macs with Windows 7. Unfortunately, to run Windows 8 properly, the only option is to install it on a virtual machine. Apart from that, if you want to install Windows 7 with Boot Camp, you can do it

Gmail mail window doesn't display properly

I have windows 7. When I open g-mail, the mail window shrinks and only displays who the e-mail is from and the time received. The other features and columns etc on the g-mail page are properly displayed. I don't have this problem in windows explorer.

I am not sure what your problem is, can you give more details.
One possibility is you may be in full screen mode, for details on fixing that see the [[menu bar is missing]] article.

How can I set Firefox to open a new e-mail window from a contact link in a web site in Gmail rather than in Microsoft Outlook?

When I click on a "Contact Us" e-mail link in a web site, Firefox opens the blank e-mail window in Microsoft Outlook. I rarely use that program any more; I use Gmail instead. Is there anyway I can change the settings in Firefox so that it will open a Gmail window instead?

Main Mail window missing

I can not recall having done any upgrdes or installs at the time of this occurence. When launching mail the main mail window of the app. does not apear. It is listed in the menu's but will not show up when selected. I backed up my messages and deleted all the mail and still nothing. Next I reinstalled the Mail app. package, nothing. Finally I did an arcive and install of 10.4, nothing. I have the same accounts on my PBG4 and there is nothing wrong with it, there were 2000 emails in the combined 3 accounts and I have gottent that down to 400 but nothing has changed. Any thoughts or directions?

The position and size of the window is stored in the preferences file. If there is something wrong with the values stored there, that would explain the problem you’re experiencing. Proceed as follows:
1. If you have a .Mac account and .Mac synchronization of Mail data is enabled either in Mail > Preferences > General or in System Preferences > .Mac, disable it before proceeding.
2. Quit Mail if it’s running.
3. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted if this fixes the problem).
5. Open Mail. You’ll have to set up your non-.Mac accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done.
You’ll also have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
You may also need to re-install or re-enable any Mail plug-ins you have installed for Mail to recognize them.
6. As a side effect of re-creating com.apple.mail.plist, Mail might rename Outbox (which is where messages waiting to be sent are stored) to Delivered. The name of that mailbox is actually a misnomer, as it would contain messages (if any) that couldn’t be delivered for some reason. You can delete that mailbox if you wish.
7. If the problem is fixed now and .Mac synchronization of Mail data was enabled at the beginning, enable it again, go to System Preferences > .Mac > Advanced, click Reset Sync Data, and choose the appropriate options to reset the Mail data stored on the .Mac server with the data locally stored on the computer, i.e. sync data must flow from the computer to the .Mac server.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

HT5361 My Mail window will not open.

My mail window is not opening. The bar at the top pops open, but nothing else comes up and I have to restart my laptop to close it.

Have you tried File/New Viewer Window?
Will it Force Quit under the  menu or command - option - esc?
After the admin accout (above), try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

I speak English. I am living in Chile and have a Dell/MS Windows Vista (English) laptop. I have Firefox 3.6.12. I have installed the Spanish (Mexico) dictionary. I right-click in a Yahoo e-mail window and select Languages - Spanish (Mexico) and start typing in Spanish, but it is not correcting my mistakes, or offering alternative spellings.
I don't know if I have the correct plug-in, correct settings, or am expecting something that isn't possible.

Do other dictionaries work if you select them in the Languages menu?

E-mail window for iPhoto V8 with upgrade 7.01

I installed iPhoto 8 and got errors in posting. Installed 7.01 download this morning and using web gallery command now creates the gallery OK. Yesterday when I got errors I got a mail window open with the gallery and instructions to the recipients how to look at the gallery.
Although the gallery now creates itself I don't get the email window to send to friends?

There's a Tell a Friend icon in the Toolbar at the bottom. You must have clicked that accidentally when you were playing with it before. That's the only way I know of to get the email message -- it doesn't make one automatically when I create the Gallery album.
