Cant drag file onto external hardrive.

can anyone help me please dont have my imac worked out just yet. My WD elements external hardrive is formatted MS-DOS (FAT). Now i have been using it for quite a while have never had any problems until now. Usually i can drag pretty much anything and everything into it. I'm not sure whats happend, but now it wont let me put anything in it. It wont let me move anything -The white circle with the line through it pops up now whenever i try to drag any files onto it. i have plugged another hardrive in to see if that would work and it wont let me drag anything into it either and it is fromatted the same as my other one. Whats has happened? any help with fixing this would be greatly appreciated!! cheers

Hello,
In Finder, do a Get Info on one of the Drives, is it Locked or what Priviledges does it show for you?
Another thing about MS-Dos/Fat drives is the limit of files/folders at the top level, (128-256 depending), once that is reached, no more can be added, you have to delete one file & make a folder to move or create other files in.

Updated to latest operating system OS X Mavericks on MacBook Pro and now won't let me drag files onto a flash drive.

The Flash Disk must be NTSF formatted. Writing to NTFS requires 3rd party drivers (Tuxera, Paragon). Reading from NTFS however does not require these. So install NTFS drivers, or format the drive in FAT32 from Disk Utility.
    Hope this helps :-)

  • Cant drag video onto ipod downloaded from itunes

    Hi
Ive been downloading videos from itunes, for example "Joe Cartoon" podcast. I got the first few episodes onto my ipod fine, since then though i cant get videos onto the ipod. They download fine from itunes but when i try to drag them onto the ipod i get the black circle with the line through it. ive checked the info and they are mpeg4. Does anyone else have this problem or have any solutions?!
    thanks in advance

    Hello mizgeministarz,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
I only have a few suggestions for you, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to at least try. Have you tried accessing these TV shows outside the playlist they reside in? Just access them from the main list of TV Shows if at all possible or if that isn't what you are doing currently.
It might not hurt to also try to restore the iPod and start from scratch allowing fresh copies of the TV Shows to sync over to your iPod. There may have been a syncing issue that corrupted your TV Shows. If that isn't the case, your iPod is having trouble with the video playback.
    Hope this helps.

  • Need help with copying files onto external drive

I need help! Trying to copy downloaded movie files from Vuze (which have downloaded successfully) and copy onto external hard drive to view them but it wont let me copy over to the external device. Any ideas how to fix this please???

Can you explain the steps you used, and the error message (or symptom), that says the copy did not work?

  • Dragging files onto a disc

I have recently got a new lap top. This one is a MacBook Pro, my previous one was a Power Book.
With my power book, if I wanted to put a file onto a disc I would just drag it.
When I do this with this computer it only drags a thumbnail of the file, not the file itself and it's contents.
    Please help!

Thanks very much for your reply.
    Still confused though, I'm sorry.
I'm putting movies onto a DVD to burn.
With my powerbook, with each movie I dragged onto a disc the file would show up on there with the amount of MB / GB it had.
Once the disc capacity was full it would indicate that no other files could be added to the disc.
Now any file I drag on only has a thumb nail at 48KB, regardless of how big the actual file is.
Is the disc capacity filled as it is burned then?
Would I 'manually' look up the file size of each movie and add them up so I know how many can fit on the disc, or is there an 'automatic' way of knowing this as there was previously?
ETA. Oh, and just in case it makes a difference my Mac is a 10. 5.8, so not actually a 10 . 6

  • Putting iTunes Music Onto External Hardrive

    Hi guys,
Just wondering if someone can help answear my question hopefully or give me some help
I have a macbook air and currently have all my itunes music stored onto the mac internal hard drive. However, I recently bought an external hard drive and was wondering, If i can or if its possible?? If I move all the music from my mac onto my external hardrive, would the music still play or be rejistered in my iTunes library because my iphone is on auto sync for music with itunes.
I know that once I draged and dropped a music clip straight from my external into itunes and it still played, registered even when i didnt have my external plugged in and also didnt have a copy of it on my mac at all. Just wondering if its the same for music???
    Cheers,
    Thomas

    Awesome thank you Niel.
It's just copying over to my external now. Afterwards can I delete the itunes music folder off my mac cause i need to free up a lot of space. If i do this after opening itunes with holding the option key down and click chose library which will be from my external. Then will all itunes music still work even when I dont have the external plugged in

  • Backing Up Library onto external hardrive

Well I got a 16 GB iPod touch and I'm running out of hard drive space (32GB out of 40GB). Is it possible to relocate the folder to an external hardrive

    Quit iTunes.
Drag the *iTunes folder* (My Documents/My Music/iTunes) to the external drive.
Drag My Documents/My Music/iTunes to the trash but do NOT empty it yet.
Start iTunes holding the Shift key.
Select *Choose existing library* & select the *iTunes library file* in the folder you copied onto the external.
Once you verify it works, empty the trash.

  • Cant drag files to WD HD - it is formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled)??

    Hi
I have my WD Hardrive formatted to my mac book air and have transfered files in the past with no problem- is it formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) so I am not sure where I am going wrong considering its always been fine in the past..
There is plenty of space left on the HD?
I get a circle with a cross going through it over the files I am trying to drag.
My laptop is almost at capacity memory wise and I really need to offload some things to my HD ASAP!
    Thanks

I meet all those requirements.  core 2 duo and latest snow leopard.  I have a late 2006 mac book.  Maybe that's why.  Its telling me that my hard drive isn't formatted correctly but it is formatted as they ask.  It's not the hard drive that came with the macbook though.

  • ITunes will not allow me to drag files onto my desktop or a USB drive. The files still come up in finder and I can drag from there but I need entire playlists transferred. It started this when Yosemite went public and I updated out of BETA.

Songs and Playlists cannot be dragged from the itunes app onto desktop or usb drives.
Files can be dragged from Finder but only one at a time.
The issue started when I updated Yosemite out of BETA.
    I am running:
    OS X Yosemite 10.10
    2013 Macbook Pro
    iTunes 12.0.1

Hey! I had the same problem you did just today when I was trying to get my second iPhone to sync. What you need to do with music or anything extra that you doing you have to creat a second playlist or picture or anything that you would like to use, so that you can add to the second device that you are going to be using. I am not sure if that will help but it helped me out a lot!! Good luck!

  • Can't drag files from external HD, Desktop

Can highlight and open items on my desktop, hard drive, external hard drive, dock, internet, and within programs, but can not drag a file at all from any (even can't drag a graphic from internet browser to my desktop. Isn't even showing the dragging highlight you get when dragging). Everything is just stuck where it's at. Can open folders, programs, etc...
Did I hit a combination of keys that created this? The mouse and keyboard seem to be working fine otherwise.

How are the EHD's formattted? I suspect they are formatted for WIndows machines in NFS, if I am correct they are operating correctly and cannot be written to. You may havee to reformat to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) which means yuo  will lose all data on them.
Please be complete and tell us more info about the drives.

  • How to transfer files to external hardrive to free up space on my internal drive

HOW TO TRANSFER FILES TO MY EXTERNAL HARD DRVE TO FREE UP SPACE ON MY INTERNAL HARD DRIVE

Depends on the file type. Most files - documents you have created, like MSWor files - you can drag and drop.
You should not do that with Applications.
Here's how to move iTunes and iPhoto libraries:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229
Moving Applications is more complex. Post back if you want to do that.
Do not forget to trash the originals on the internal drive, and then EMPTY the trash.

  • How to backup movie/photo files onto external HD?

hard drive is running out of space & while I have a time machine, I don't think it works for this purpose- I want to be able to access the photos & video clips to work on projects in imovie & elsewhere (photobook sites, etc).  do I need to do anything more than copy & paste/drag & drop the files from my computer to the external HD? Is there a specific way to do this? I may also save some Word & Excel docs but mostly video & photo since they're hogging up all my hard drive... I'm just so nervous about deleting them off the computer & potentially losing them forever .
    thanks!

You can move your iMovie files to an external drive. YOu must do this within iMovie so that your projects continue to work.
First, your external drive must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). You can right-click on the drive and select Get Info to see how it is currently formatted. The external drive can be USB or Firewire. Both will work, although a Firewire drive will be faster.
If your drive is not already formatted like this, you can reformat using Disk Utility. Let me know if you need detailed instructions on using Disk Utility for this. Keep in mind that if you reformat your external drive, it will erase anything that is there now.
To move your projects and events in iMovie, first click VIEW/EVENTS BY DISK.
In your Project Library, you should see your internal drive and all properly formatted external drives. Hold down the Command Key as you drag the small project icons to the small icon for the external drive. You must hold the command key down as you drag, because this will MOVE the file. If you just drag, it will COPY and you will not save any space.
Next, do the same thing for your Events in the Event Library. Hold down the Command Key as you drag the small event icon to the icon for the external drive. Repeat for each event.
It is quite possible to move your iPhoto library as well. I have only done it once, so I suggest you ask this question at the iPhoto discussion.

  • I cant download files onto my new hard drive

I have just got a new hard drive and I am unable to download any files from my macbook onto it. My hard drive is 1t and whenever I try to put the files on a little circle with a cross in it shows up and nothing happens. Is there anyway I could fix this? Thanks!

No idea since you give us no information except a problem
1 - does this involve iPhoto for the Mac where you posted in any way? - If so how?
2 - what format is the external hard drive (select it in the finder and right click - get info to see the format
3 - exactly what are you trying to do - Downloading is not at all  definitive as download can be done in many different ways using many different software packages

  • Finder crashes anytime I try to transfer files onto external HDD

I recently had to have the HDD cable inside my MBP replaced because it was not working properly. After it was installed I was able to do a clean install of OS X 10.6 and after fully updating to 10.6.8 I installed ML 10.8.2 everything was working perfectly then all of a sudden I am no longer able to transfer files from my desktop onto any external HDD. I thought there might be something wrong with the external HDD but I can copy items off of it onto the desktop with no problem and was even able to place things on it before finder started randomly freezing. The freeze starts off with the spinning beach ball, and everything else seems to be working until i switch to a different application then they all start freezing.
Is there any way to solve this without having to completley do a clean install all over again?

The next time you have the problem, note the exact times when it starts and ends: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped during that interval. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
