Cant edit photos after exporting

Hello all. Relatively new to Lightroom here so Im not sure if this is a dumb question or not.
I imported about 220 photos and worked on just about 20 to 25 of them. I then selected those 25 from my collection and exported them to a folder on my PC so I could then import them into Picasa.
After doing that, I returned to Lightroom to edit more from that collection but could no longer do so. I couldnt make any changes to the ones I previously worked on, but more importantly, I couldnt make any changes to any of the ones I hadnt even touched yet. When you export photos from a folder, does Lightroom automatically prohibit you from changing anything else? It seems the only way I can bypass this problem is just to delete the folder and re-import the photos from my camera again, creating a new folder.
Am I missing something? How can I go back and edit photos after exporting? Can it be done?
Thanks!

Hi Judy
On the bottom left of the left tool bar there are two buttons. Import and Export. I exported my photos using the Export button. When you do that, the screen that comes up prompts you to set up an export location on your C drive. So I exported the photos to a folder I set up.
I did not set up a catalogue or export any catalogue.
I seriously doubt that Picasa had any effect on the folders in Lightroom. The two software application are totally separate. You dont directly transfer photos from LR to Picasa. You need to export from LR first to a location on your PC then Import from that file on your PC into LR. So I dont see how Picasa could effect the photos that are in LR.

Sounds like you've set Pages as an external editor.
iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and set what you prefer as an editor.

  • Cant edit photos

hello i have tried everythign suggested in tryuing to get iphoto to edit photos and i still cant get it to work.
just now i reinstalled the entire OS (10.5) and installed ilife08 i imported one folder of jpegs (about 2000 images) all the thumbnails work and when i click on the edit button and make changes the thumbnail is updated with the changes but there is no image in the edit view.
this is now ridiculous... i did a clean install of the OS, ran all software updates, then installed ilife and installed all updates then imported the images (no raw images, jpegs that were exported out of aperture)
this is getting really annoying and i am spending far more time on this than i really want to. It seems to be a somewhat widespread problem, and yet there is no solution to it.

    Thomas:
Your iPhoto Advanced preferences pane looks like this, right? What do you see in the edit view, an exclamation mark ( ! ) or a blank white window? The ! indicates that iPhoto has lost the link to the original file. The blank white window can mean no access privileges to the original. If it's the latterdownload and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name, long or short, in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field.
If your getting the "!" in the window try rebuilding the library with iPhoto LIbrary Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. Report back on how long it took and how many photos you have in the library so we can give other users an idea of how long it may take.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Should all edited photos be exported for safety?

Since all edits are contained inside the LR catalog, and not within the original file, what would happen if you wanted to switch post processing software to (for example) Aperture?  I assume Aperture can't read a LR catalog, so all your edits would be lost?  For this reason, is it prudent to export every edited photo?

Indeed it's as you feared, and using DNG doesn't change that.
But it's not as bad as it may seem at first, since once edited and exported you have all edits incorporated (i.e. no need to re-edit originals if already edited satisfactorily), so the issue only comes up if you want to re-edit an already-edited photo and change things like baseline detail settings or color profile.. (things that require the original/raw), in which case you'll have to start from scratch in new software, but you'll have the baked photo as a guide if you want it to be about the same as last time.. If you just want to add a little exposure or contrast, or remove a spec or something, that can be done to the rgb version of the file. I realize change management can become an issue (which is the real photo, and are there edits to rgb file which should be migrated to original when edited..), still...

  • Cant edit photos from PC

    Oops, there it is.

this modular 747 has hijacked 3 of my posts today, this one, one regarding my wish for landscape photo and video to be enabled as default so you dont have to hold phone sideways and a previous one similar saying that when I edit photos on my Iphone that the changes do not transfer to the PC.
Its like because this one indivual does not share any of these problems they do not apply.
I have supported apple products from the start with exception of the PC which was for years the format to use in the business world.  Apple has always been my music, phone and now even apple tv device.
Confuses me why one person would take my posts so personal.
Please go elsewhere if you do not like my posts, or post if you dont like, just stop with the hijacking.

  • Sorting photos after export into date tree

I recently migrated from Linux to OS X and I have one problem: I want to sort my pictures and movies (from cameras and ipad) using the exif info into a datetree with the form:
    2013/08/
    (YYYY/MM)
and the file name cotaining the date and time with second the picture was taken:
    2013.08.14_13.15.59_THE.ORIGINAL.FILENAME.ORIGINALEXTENSION
    (YYYY.MM.DD_hh.mm.ss_ORIGINALFILENAME.ORIGINALEXTENSION)
This was easily possinble under Linux, but I can't find any program which is doing this under OS X. Free solutions are prefered, but if it is reasonably priced, it is OK as well.
I am not a prodfessional photographer, so I can't justify an expensive tool for this.
    Any suggestions?
After the initial I would use iPhoto as a referenced photo manager and not copy the images into the library.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Rainer

Thanks a lot for your extensive reply. I will comment to some points below.
Somehow I don't manage tio insert my comments in the quotations without inserting the whole previous message and deleting the unwanted blocks?

but honestly, if your final destination is iPhoto then it's all just making work for yourself.
I offer the following simply as a comment on your planned work method, not a criticism, but based on a lot of experience managing photos, using iPhoto and Macs.
The reason why I want to use a referenced mode is that I want to share the photos with non-OS X computer (Linux) and that I am not to sure that I will stay with iPhoto / Aperture. So I want to keep the pictures in an accessible format for other programs.
    1. Don't run iPhoto in Referenced Mode. It's only storing up issues for yourself, making unnecessary work to exactly zero benefit.
    This
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3062728?tstart=0
    has more on that.
I see the problems, but I don't see any other way to share the pictures with non-OS X users. If you have any ideas, I will gladly try them out. Regular exports do not sound to appealing to me.
In addition, I am not clear what happens when I change the quality setting for jpeg to highest, and the original image is in e.g. normal - the conversion can not result in a better photo then the original, as the information is already lost. I therefore assume, that, when I convert it back to the original quality setting, I will again have lost information - so this export is lossy, even when I select the highest quality. What I would like to have is "original plus the metadata".
    2. Date and Time is pretty much the most limited way of organising photos that there is. Once you get past a couple of thousand images, unless you have a remarkable memory indeed, you might as well use random number strings. It tells you nothing about the content of the photo, and I don't know of anyone who wants a photo - any photo - taken at 1pm in July 6th 1997, but I do know a lot of folks who want their favourite photo of their dog, or car or whatever.
Agreed - but this is a matter of preference. To find the dog, I have then e.g. iPhoto.
    3. You're thinking in terms of a file based workflow. iPhoto is a data based workflow. It replaces the finder for everything you need to do with your photos. Everything. Simply, if you use iPhoto you never interact with your images except with or via iPhoto. That sounds pretty limiting but it's not, as iPhoto is integrated throughout the OS. The best example I can suggest for comparison is the Contacts (or AddressBook). All of your addresses stored in one place, available to every app on your Mac for whatever use you might have. Well that's iPhoto - all your photos stored in one place, available to every app on your Mac for whatever use you might have. Where you store the files really doesn't matter - you never interact with them anyway.
You'll only cause yourself issues and confusion. Again, think of having your Contacts in the address book, and also in a text file. Edit the text file and the Contacts app is out of date, and vice versa.
If you're concerned that you might want to migrate away from iPhoto at some point then the Export command means you can get put anything you put in, in a many different formats.
For help accessing your photos in iPhoto see this user tip:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4491
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
I read the links, and I see the difference between data and file based workflow, but I am thinking about keeping the quality of the photos AND to keep, if possible, the metadata. Also, sharing (at the maximum quality) has to be easy, for which I don't see an easy solution when using the data based approach.
I think I have to go with your statement - "If you really feel that you need to directly access the files for some purpose, then the best option is to not use iPhoto." - yes, I do feel the need as I don't se another way.
Under Linux I was using digikam, and I would argue, it also uses the data approach, but stores the photos in an accessible file structure, the metadata in a database, but it can written to the file itself or to sidecar files.
So I don't think that the data based approach itself is problematic, but that the solution of iPhoto to use an internal incomprehensive folder structure to store the images is the problem - but this is a different question.
Additional question: When I use a referenced mode, iPhoto really does not asks me if I delete a photo if I want to delete it from the HDD as well (mentioned in one thread you referenced)?
    Thanks,
    Rainer

  • Cant multitask Photos (after 4.2 upgrade)

I use the "Email photo" option from within the Photos app all the time. After the 4.2 upgrade I cant go back to Photos to add another photo to the email.
I have to create new email and then go to photos and copy/paste 1 pic at a time.
Friend at work tried it with her i4 as well, same thing.
Jobs, I want my ios 4.1 back !

You need to have first an updated version of iTunes (10.1.0.56 as of 24-November-2010) from where you have your content library with music and video (manually managed) items. Hit the Sync button on the right side bottom of the screen and you will see all your music files back. Do the same for the video files.

  • Cant edit photo on windows gallery

    HI
I have recently had an issue where I cannot edit my pictures on my windows photo gallery just recently I tried to rotate my pictures and I received an error message saying that the task could not be done because the image may be in use or open in another program or is a read only file and it it only on pictures that I have backed in the last month not sure if the iphone is the one corrupting my files and if so how can i fix it?

    Hi Loc..
I share my music over 3 Macs..with 4 accounts on each, one for each member of the family..as long as all the itunes are open and they are all set to 'sharing' then everybody can see and play any music on any account on any mac, it shows up as 'shared music' in you itunes sidebar. If my son downloads or imports an album or a cd into his itunes then anyone can play it.
I've tried to keep all the music on the 20" dualcore which frees up memory on the G5 and ibook...it seams to work quite well.
Did a similar thing with iphoto and that works ok, only problem I have had with both setups is Leopards glitchy networking but i'm hoping that will settle down in time, it's still a bit new, I should have waited till 10.5.3 at least...but christmas got in the way..
    Hope this helps

  • HT4890 cant edit photos on windows live because of photo stream

Chaning sharing, changing permissions, changing read only does not work. If I transfer pictures from my iPhone to my computer and then try to edit them in Windows live Photo Gallery, I get an error that says the file is in use by another program. This problem started the same day I started using photo stream. Please help. I've tried resetting my photo stream, deleting my photo stream folder on my computer...nothing works. I can not even change the orientation of a photo once i've transfered it from my iPhone to my computer.

    Hi Amish,
I should have mentioned that I have signed out of the iCloud Control Panel several times and no syncing occurs.
Thanks for your response anyway. I appreciate your feedback.

  • Can't find my edited photos after saving them

I have been using Elements 5.0 and recently I'm having a problem with the photos that I edit, (using the Photo Editor), not showing up in the folder I designate for them in Save As.  Am I missing a setting that in my Organizer???

Its quite unusual. Try resetting editor preferences. Follow these steps
    1. Close Elements.
    2. Launch the Photoshop Elements Welcome Screen and hold down ctrl + alt + shift as you click Editor.
    3. Continue to hold the keys until you see a message box asking if you want to delete Photoshop Elements settings file; click Yes. Elements will open with default preferences.

  • Lost ability to edit photos after latest update

Hi,  I have just applied the latest update to my installation of Aperture.  Upon opening it also upgraded my library to the newer version.  Was this was completed I am able to browse and view all the photos in my library however if I try to do anything with any of them I am unable to.  For example I am unable to duplicate a photo graph as the option in the menu to do this is greyed out.  Like wise if I try to adjust the photo again all the adjustment panel options are greyed out.  This is very frustrating and any help would be much appreciated.
    Many Thanks
    BV

You may be in "Preview" mode. Then all edits are disabled. Type "P"; that toggles quick preview mode on and off.
Or press the "Quick Preview" icon, the "hurried rectangle" as Kirby Krieger once called it
Or do you see broken arrows, indicating missing original master files, on your image thumbnails? In that case you need to use the "File > Locate Referenced Files" menu command to reconnect the image versions to their original (master image) files.
    Regards
    Léonie
    BTW:
I have just applied the latest update
I assume you are working with Aperture 3.3.1. In that case the MacOS X in your signature canot be correct.

  • How to see original photo after exporting to photoshop

    Hello,
When making adjustments to the RAW file in Lightroom I know you can use the "\" key to see the before image. However, when I export to photoshop it saves a second image back into Lightroom.
When looking at this new image is there a way to flip back and forth with the original RAW??
    Thanks
    Scott

No, that isn't possible because the new image is a completely separate file. But there's nothing preventing you from using the arrow keys in Lightroom to move back and forth between the two images. Or, you can highlight the two images and press the letter C to compare the two images side-by-side.
