  • Migration Assistant cant find external hard drive Best Buy backed up for me when laptop crashed.

My mac's hard drive somehow failed and I took it to Best Buy where i bought it from and they backed it up to an external I had to buy and now when I go to the migration assistant it cant find it. What can I do?

Migration assistant will only work with drives that are a) contain original Mac systems, b) are exact clones of such drives, or c) Time Machine destination drives. For example, with a clone, you would see an Applications folder, a Library folder, System and Users at the top of the hard drive. If Best Buy just copied files onto the external, you can't use it in Migration Assistant. However, once you complete setup of the new system (without migrating) you can manually copy user files (not most applications though) from wherever they are on the external to the proper places on your new drive.

What message are you receiving? You can find DiskWarrior at the Apple Store or here - http://www.alsoft.com/index.html. It's about $100US.
You can boot from the DiskWarrior CD - http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/details6.html
If DiskWarrior does not resolve the issue, then you can try an Apple Repair Station. You've lost nothing in your attempt to self-resolve because you should own the DiskWarrior software anyway.
    Good Luck,

  • Airport extreme base station cant access external hard drive

Just bought the new Airport extreme base station and I cant access the external hard drive. Any suggestions would be great. Everything worked great on the 5th generation airport extreme. But wanted to have the new speeds. But seems not to be worth it if I cant access my external hard drive. Please Help
Thank you in advance for any help.

I saw it in the finder menu but when I clicked on it nothing would happen. Then I went to my airport utility to see if that the extreme saw it.  It was in the disk section. But I can't access it. Today it completely disappeared from the utility but my laptop is still online. This thing is crazy.

  • Can't find external hard drive for time machine restore

I recently installed Lion (mistake) and I'm now attempting to reinstall Snow Leopard from a Time Machine back up.  I get to the point where it starts searching for external drives in order to find the Time Machine back up; however, it is not able to find my drive.  I've tried plugging it in before I start the computer, and when it starts to search for the drive. I did not plug in my hard drive while I had Lion running (it never backed up from Lion).  Help?

I have a Mac Mini (late 2009) and I have an iomega 1TB external hard drive connected to my mini via firewire and usb (usb allows me to use the usb ports on the external 1TB drive to daisy chain other devices).  Since I installed Lion, my Time Machine  and this 1TB drive (and its partitions) is finicky.  Sometimes it is mounted and sometimes it is not.   This issue has only surfaced post Snow Leopard and in the Lion era. I am not the first to say this but the whole reason I went Mac was b/c of Vista.  I am beginning to think that Lion is the new Vista.  Sorry for the latter, just venting... b/c this ain't the first issue with Lion.

  • Migration Assistant finds external hard drive but says it has 0 kb in profile

I'm trying to transfer all my stuff from one MacBook to a Macbook Pro. I have been saving Time Machine back ups on an external hard drive for a few years on the original MacBook, running 10.6. I know it has been backing up properly because all of the files are there when I browse the backups folder.
When I go to Migration Assistant on the MacBook Pro and choose back up from Time Machine or other disk, Migration Assistant recognizes the external hard drive, but when I click through, it shows my user profile and says it has 0.0 kb in it. Also says 0.0 kb for Apps and Documents / Files.
If I do Mac to Mac transfer through Wifi, it finds the entire profile and all of the files. That takes too long, though, and I thought the purpose of having my stuff on a hard drive was to make this process really easy.
Appreciate any help anyone can give me about getting this to work right. Thanks.

I did this just yesterday yesterday. I put a new disk into a G4 iMac, installed a fresh copy of Tiger on it and then migrated the user folders across from the old drive that I put in a firewire enclosure. Obviously if you go for an Intel Mac then you will have to be careful with the applications.

  • My MacBookPro is not finding external hard drive

My 2TB WD Ultra My Passport external hard drive for Mac stopped showing in the Finder of my MacBookPro (10.9.1), although it does show as "Unmounted" in the Disk Utility. When I hit the "Mount" button, nothing happens. What do I do?

    macalltheway:
If you intend to clone or install to this drive to make it bootable, you need to format the drive first. Below are directions for formatting:
Formatting, Partitioning Erasing an External HDD
    • Connect external HDD to computer
    • Turn on external HDD
    • Start up computer and log in
    • Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility and launch DU.
    • Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
    • Select Partition tab in main panel.
    • Click on Options button
    • Select Apple Partition Map (PPC Macs) or GUID Partition Table (Intel Macs)
    • Click OK
    • Select number of partitions in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
For more partitions than one, after you have selected the number of partitions adjust the size of the partition by selecting the top partition and typing in the size; then move down if more adjustments need to be made.
(See Dr. Smoke’s FAQ Backup and Recovery for tips on partitioning external HDD)
    • Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
    • Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    • Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    • Select Erase tab
    • Select the sub-volume (indented) under Manufacturer ID
    • Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
    • Click Erase button
    • Repeat above procedure to erase each partition
    • Quit Disk Utility.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.

  • Can't find External Hard Drive on Finder

My external hard drive is no longer visible on the desktop, or in the finder. It appears to still be working, because my sons' iTunes accounts (located on the external) are both working fine. How can I make it appear again?
(Bonus question: This reminds me of the problem with ejecting an iPod, leaving it plugged in to the USB, but then wanting to re-access it. Is there any way to make iTunes find your iPod again without unplugging/replugging the device?)
    Message was edited by: cvw2

    I'm having a similar...but slightly different problem.
My external drives (both firewire and usb connected) are showing up just fine in Finder...and I'm able to do all the normal things that I can do on them (moving things around, adding things, copying things, re-naming folders, etc..etc..etc).
BUT, what Finder has indeed stopped doing, is it has stopped showing search results for anything that is located IN these external drives.
For instance, my externals are where ALL of my music is kept. I do a lot of dj'ing, and therefore have quite a bit of music digitized (around 400 gigs)...so I've never kept music on my internal hard drive on the laptop. As well, I have another external USB drive that serves as my hard drive for dj'ing. It goes out with me to gigs, and my dj software reads from it (because music that I would actually play out at gigs is only a percentage of my overall music library, and I certainly don't want to be lugging my main music library hard drive around town all the time).
Anyway, at various times, I end up searching for song files, or album folders, or whatever in Finder...and it has (out of the blue) completely stopped "finding" things in the external drives.
    Quite baffling.
Has this happened to anyone else....and/or does anyone know how to fix this?
    Thank you!!!
    cheers.

  • Cant run external hard drive on mac.

I recently purchased an external hard drive. However i cant run it on a mac as it says there are no devices that can install the hard drive. It gives me suggestions from the app store to try but i dont know if they work? It doesnt give me any preferences to change to a mac etc but Im pretty poor with laptops, so im sorry if theres an easy way around this.

PC formatted iPod (FAT32) can be read by a Mac computer but not the other way round.
You can try this and install on your PC to read your Mac formatted iPod

  • Time Machine cannot find external hard drive

I have just recently purchased an airport extreme and have enjoyed being able to plug in an external hard drive for time machine. I think I must have reset my laptop while it was backing up because now I get an error every time it tries to back up. The error I get is disc image cannot be accessed (error 2) I have tried everything I can think (reseting router, unplugging and plugging back in the hard drive, changing networks, and then back) but still nothing. I am not even able to enter the time machine to back up to a time before I had this problem. I can however access the contents of the drive just not successfully complete a time machine back up. Thanks for the help

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Start by Repairing the sparse bundle that contains your backups, via #A5 of the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum.
If that doesn't help, try a "full reset" per #A4 there.
You do need to know that backing-up this way is "iffy" and +*not supported+* by Apple. See the Using Time Machine with a USB drive connected to an Airport Extreme *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

  • Help?  Can not find external hard drive after upgrading to 10.6.3

I upgraded my iMac to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and now my external hard drive does not appear.  Not sure what to do.

It is powered (the light is on).  I was uploading photos from the drive yesterday, so it worked perfectly fine before the upgrade to 10.6.8 (which I did during the night).  Is there anything else to try before I move it to another computer to see if it works?  Again, thanks.

  • Mac can't find external hard drive

    Hi,
I've had an external hard drive for my mac now for over a year.  It's been working wonderfully, however, recently the hard drive can no longer be recognized by my mac.  It doesn't come up in the Disky Utility and it doesn't come up in System Profiler.  Naturally, there's a lot of stuff on there I want to keep.  How can I get this thing mounted again?

Our company's system admin made me aware of Scannerz, which is a test tool. Their web site in the how to and downloads section has a lot of info on that type of stuff. The link is:
    http://scsc-online.com
I saw that happen once when the drive became corrupt and Disk Utility wouldn't see the drive. There's a command line way to use Disk Utility and the drive doesn't show up with a name but with a disk id like /dev/disk023s23 (something like that...that's an example).
Also, check your drive cable. It might have gone bad.

  • Cant see external Hard Drive connected to TC

    Hey Guys
Love my TC but still cant get it to work as I want. I will list my challenges seperatley.
The first one is I have a hard drive connected by USB but I cant see it in Finder? I can see everything on my TC but not the connected HD.
    Thanks in Advance
    AC
(Its the latest TC with latest software)

    What Bob suggested should work.
You can also plug the USB drive into a Mac.. Mac OS can read NTFS but not write to it. You could then copy the files to the TC. My experience is Mac reads NTFS very slowly..
You do want to get the PC working I think, by ethernet to the TC and copy the files.
If this is just temporary that is fine.. using the TC for a data store and mixing with Time Machine is not such a great idea.
IMHO USB drives are cheap.. go and buy a new one. So you can copy the files direct from one disk plugged into your computer to the drive correctly connected to the TC or to the Mac.. Keep the old USB as a backup or format it and use it for something else.

  • Cant format external hard drive

I got this 160 GB hard drive to use for time capsule. Started up alright but after 5 GB backup got an error message and stopped. I tried to format and repair it in disk utilety but wouldnt work. I also tried to delete the files in finder but wouldnt work. In use. Does anyone have any idea whats going on with my external harddrive? Could it be damaged?

Yes you need to format and erase the drive using Disk Utility>Erase>Security Option>Zero All Data.
This will write 0's to the complete drive and map off the bad sector that is causing it to hang.
I really don't advise TimeCapsule or TimeMachine as a solo backup measure, anything is better than nothing of course, but in most cases the more involved and complicated it is, the more it tries to hold your hand or "assists" and thus becomes less flexible and dependant upon other things working (especially wireless), the more tendency of it to fail when you need it the most.
Most times a very simple direct clone of your boot drive onto another drive is all one needs, and since you have a iMac, that means you can leave the external drive connected all the time and software makes a scheduled clone every few days or so. Another benefit of a external drive clone (that TimeMachine and Capsule don't offer) is that it's "hold the option key" bootable, so in case your iMac's hard drive dies you can simply boot off the clone and keep using the machine.
So instead of having to drag your iMac into Apple, waiting a week or so and paying a fortune for a out of warranty drive replacement (which makes you consider getting a whole new computer instead) for $70-$100 plus free Carbon Copy Cloner, your doubly covered against software and hard drive failure.
Another thing, we used to be able to replace hard drives in iMac's on our own, but now Apple has placed proprietary software on iMac's drives that the machine won't function without it. You can't get this software, thus you can't replace the drive yourself.

Hello, I just bought a 60GB External 2.5" SATA Laptop Hard Drive for my new macbook, and I can't locate it when I plug it in. The green light lights up fine, but it doesn't appear on my disk utility page. Not sure how else to look for it.

Is it self powered, or does it also have a Power Supply?
