Cant find Wireless Security to set up WPA

On the Linksys web based set up page - mine does not show "Wireless Security" as a sub heading under Wireless, it only shows "Wireless" in "Advanced".  Therefore I cannot set up WPA security. Can anyone help please.

Hello Lazergirl,
I think you will have to hard reset router and then update firmware of router. Also make sure you disable all firewalls on your computer before accessing setup page.
Follow this:
Go to www.linksys.com/download and select correct model numbers and version number. Download the firmware and save it on your computer.
Check the file it sould be firmware image file like .bin etc. If it is a compressed zip file extract it to get firmware image file.
Open setup page of router by typing http://192.168.1.1 in browser’s address bar, and typing password as "admin" and no user name.
Go to administartion tab there
Go to fimware update sub-tab there
Browse for the firmware image file and click update
when update completes turn off modem & router.
After 2 minutes turn on modem and after 2 more minutes turn on router.
Now proceed to login and see if you get wireless security sub tab.

If you go into Settings>General>Network, you should still be able to access VPN settings. My listings show Cellular Data, Data Roaming, Set Up Personal Hotspot, VPN and Wi-Fi. I do not use Personal Hotspot (tethering) so mine says Setup. However, VPN settings are different than cellular data settings. Not sure which you are asking about now.

  • Win xp cant find wireless network

i purchased an AEBS to use in my home network. I am unable to find the wireless network with 2 of my 4 laptops (all different brands).
I have been able to connect to it via eth and have configured it to a fully open, unencrypted network, and i have changed the channel to a fixed one (since i read somewhere that channel 13 might cause issues with xp).
So far, one windows xp laptop and my macbook pro have been able to find the wireless network (and connect without issues), my two other xp laptops dont even find the network, they do however find surrounding networks so i know their wireless cards are working and are active.
I have installed all the necessary driver updates for both the AEBS and the laptops, but still no luck. I tried every possible combination of 802.11a/b/g and even tried to create a closed SSID, but no luck. I have done multiple hard and soft resets, but no luck.
I cant blame the AEBS since i can find it with 2 laptops, nor can i blame the other 2 laptops since they can find surrounding networks. Can someome please point me in the right direction ?
ps: Win XP SP2 on the 2 'faulty' and the connecting one, Mac OS X 10.4.10 on the mbp.
    rgds,
    Dimitri A.

davgoust, Welcome to the discussion area!
Try changing the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to use channel 1.

I download Itunes in my new computer and i dont see how i can get my account set up to access my music

It you go to the iTunes Store, and on the right side select "Purhcased", you can re-download any songs, TV shows, etc. that you previously purchased on that account.
Any music that you got off of CD's or elsewhere, you simply need the CD or whatever you got it off of.

Are you speaking of an Apple Keyboard or Logitech or ... ? You need to updated the driver of this keyboard, if it is not Apple.

  • Wrt160nv2 wireless security help

Hello I'm new to this forum and had some questions regarding the wireless security settings on this router (WRT160Nv2) I have the security mode set to: WPA2 and what I need to know is which Encryption is better AES or the other setting which is TKIS or AES shouldint it be just TKIS? Any info would be great thanks still trying to figure out the router...

AES offers a higher level of encryption than TKIP, or "TKIP or AES".
Here are my other tips for setting up wireless security:
To set up wireless security, you must use a computer that is wired to the router.
Where to find the router settings: The router's login password is usually on one of the "Administration" pages. The other settings are all found in the "Wireless" or the "Security" section of the router's setup pages, located at 192.168.1.1
First, give your router a unique SSID. Don't use "linksys".
Make sure "SSID Broadcast" is set to "enabled".
Next, leave the router at its default wireless settings (except for the unique SSID), and then use your pc to connect wirelessly to the router. Test your wireless Internet connection and make sure it is working correctly. You must have a properly working wireless connection before setting up wireless security.
To implement wireless security, you need to do one step at a time, then verify that you can still connect your wireless computer to the router.
Next, encrypt your wireless system using the highest level of encryption that all of your wireless devices will support. Common encryption methods are:
WEP - poor (see note below)
WPA (sometimes called PSK, or WPA with TKIP) - good
WPA2 (sometimes called PSK2, or WPA with AES) - best
WPA and WPA2 sometimes come in versions of "personal", "enterprise" or "radius". Most home users should use "personal". Also, if you have a choice between AES and TKIP, and your wireless equipment is capable of both, choose AES. With any encryption method, you will need to supply a key (sometimes called a "password" ).
The wireless devices (computers, printers, etc.) that you have will need to be set up with the SSID, encryption method, and key that matches what you entered in the router.
Retest your system and verify that your wireless Internet connection is still working correctly.
And don't forget to give your router a new login password.
Picking Passwords (keys): You should never use a dictionary word as a password. If you use a dictionary word as a password, even WPA2 can be cracked in a few minutes. When you pick your login password and encryption key (or password or passphrase) you should use a random combination of capital letters, small letters, and numbers, but no spaces. A login password, should be 12 characters or more. WPA and WPA2 passwords should be at least 24 characters. Note: Your key, password, or passphrase must not have any spaces in it.
Most home users should have their routers set so that "remote management" of the router is disabled. If you must have this option enabled, then your login password must be increased to a minumum of 24 random characters.
One additional issue is that Windows XP requires a patch to run WPA2.   The patch is located in SP3, so you will need SP3 to run WPA2.
    Note:
WEP is no longer recommended. The FBI has demonstrated that WEP can be cracked in just a few minutes using software tools that are readily available over the Internet. Even a long random character password will not protect you with WEP. You should be using WPA or preferably WPA2 encryption.

  • MAC filter for wireless security????

I have hooked up my wireless router and had trouble with the security part.  I am now set up with the wireless security disabled but the MAC filter enabled and my wireless computers mac number entered and all is working.  will the MAC filter work as security for my wireless network.  thanks tdm

MAC address filtering is considered a very low level of security.  It will keep honest people from accidentally logging into your network, but that is about it.  MAC addresses are transmitted wirelessly when you use your router.  Anyone can monitor your transmissions, so it is easy to learn a working MAC address.  They can then fake the MAC address and loggin to your network whenever you are not connected.
Also, when your transmissions are not encrypted, anyone within range can monitor your wireless transmissions, even without logging into your network.  With a good antenna, your transmissions can probably be picked up for at least half a mile from your home.  So someone could monitor the web sites you visit, your email, etc., and in some cases, your passwords.
You really should setup wireless security on your network.
Here are my tips for setting up wireless security:
To set up wireless security, you must use a computer that is wired to the router.
Where to find the router settings: The router's login password is usually on one of the "Administration" pages. The other settings are all found in the "Wireless" section of the router's setup pages, located at 192.168.1.1
First, give your router a unique SSID. Don't use "linksys".

Next, leave the router at its default settings (except for the unique SSID), and then use your pc to connect wirelessly to the router.

Most home users should have their routers set so that "remote management" of the router is disabled. If you must have this option enabled, then your login password must be increased to a minumum of 24 random characters.
One additional issue is that Windows XP requires a patch to run WPA2. Go to Microsoft Knowledge base, article ID=917021 and it will direct you to the patch.
Sadly, the patch is not part of the automatic Windows XP updates, so lots of people are missing the patch.
    Note:
WEP is no longer recommended. The FBI has demonstrated that WEP can be cracked in just a few minutes using software tools that are readily available over the Internet. Even a long random character password will not protect you with WEP. You should be using WPA or preferably WPA2 encryption.

  • Existing wireless Network (not set up by me) add new mac to it

I have little or no experience.
A college computer science major (not available) set up a wireless network for my childrens emacs about 2.5 years ago. Using Netgear WGR614V2 router to a cable modem. has worked flawlessly.
I just received a macbook Pro and in spite of trying to get it added to the network I can't seem to get it.
I took the computer to starbucks and it accessed the network instantly, so it works fine.
I need help in getting the computer to communicate with the router so that it can access the cable to the internet.
I can see the various setting for the existing network by looking at the configurations on the emacs, but don't know how to set enter these to the new computer.
I know you geniuses can do this in seconds. Please help Regards Jim Svarz

    Jim,
I know how weird all these networking woes may seem to you. We all started as newbies
Let's start afresh with the very basics:
What we need to find out in the first place is:
The name of your wireless network (this is also called SSID)
If encryption is turned on for your wireless network (the most common names for wireless security schemes are WEP & WPA)
If any other security measures (such as MAC address filtering, etc) are set for your wireless network that prevent your MacBook from joining in.
All of the above information/settings is stored in your Netgear WGR614V2 router. (It's also displayed on your eMacs, but let's start with the router so you can get an overall picture of how your network works).
If this is the correct model of your router: http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/wgr614v2.asp, I'm flicking through its manual to help you set you get up and running faster.
Now, grab a pen & sheet of paper, sit in front of any eMac that works fine and place your MacBook next to the eMac. The next steps are following the instructions according to the router's manual.
    From the eMac:
    Open Safari
In the address bar type: 192.168.0.1 (and press Return)
You'll be asked for a username and a password, (Again according to the manual) the default ones are username:admin and password: password
Assuming that the guy that setup your network didn't change the default ones, you'll be able to see (log-in) the router's configuration pages.
Let me know if you can log-in to your router to continue to the next step(s)
Macs running 9.x, Macs running 10.4.x, SGI workstations running Irix 6.5.x

If Join was on then your home wi-fi must be set to Non-Broadcast.  If you did not set this up (maybe your provider did) then you will need to find the Network Name they used, and any password they used.  The SSID is Security Set ID and to see more try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSID .  Basically it is the name used to identify your router/network.  A lot of times the installer will leave it set as LinkSys, or Broadcom or whatever the manufacturer set it as for default.  Your best bet is to get whoever installed it to walk you through how they set it up, giving you id's and passwords so you can get in.  HOWEVER, if you are not comfortable with this (if you set security wrong, etc.) you would be well ahead of the game to hire a local computer tech (networking) to get this working for you.  You can also contact the vendor of your router and get help (if it is still in warranty), or at least get copies of the manuals as pdf files.  Sorry I can't give you more help, I hope this gives you an idea where to go from here to find more.
