Cant format ipod or restore it !

my ipod nano had prob ! i use itune to restore it, when it finish , itune tell me that remove ipod to ... but my ipod screen is frezze ! nothing happen! i try to connect it to pc again and use HP format tool but it tell me that my media device was locked

What did you try, changing the drive letter, or the link I gave you? have you tried resetting the iPod whilst it's connected and iTunes is open? Have you tried different ports on your computer, or a different cable? Because the iPod charges from your usb port does not mean it will be recognized. The pins that carry power are different from those that transfer data.Can you take it to an Apple store and have them check it out?

Cant Format Ipod.

I have just purchased a 20g photo ipod, every time i try to format my laptop freezes, anyone had the same problems or anyone any ideas, cheers Craig.

Its likely that your laptop is the problem - laptop Firewire connectors are usually the 4 pin variety - thats only for data with no power supply to iPod - you need a 6 pin Firewire support or a powered #usb connection. Most laptops will accept a PCMCIA 6 pin Firewire card - so thats one choice - the other is to make sure that your iPod is fully charged before you try to connect. Also, make sure that if you are using a 'Windows' pc, that you format the ipod to FAT filling system, as ipod comes suplied in 'native' Apple format.

I have a 5th generation iPod video that was originally formatted with my old Dell PC laptop - I have just recently purchased a new MacBook Pro and want to format/update my iPod for it to work properly with my new Mac.
How can I go about doing this without having to restore my factory settings and losing all of my songs?

The windows formatted iPod should still work on the MacBook Pro, now make sure you hold down Command + Option when you connect the iPod and continue holding them until they are completely mounted. What this does is does not allow the computer to update the iPod, and if a pop-up comes up, do not allow it to update the iPod. Now, we can back-up the songs. Yamipod is great for this.

Now, if you still have your old computer, i suggest using your iPod in disk mode to put all your songs on it, and import them into iTunes on your Macbook Pro, and to re-format the iPod so that it will be Mac formatted.

Question about converting a mac formatted ipod w/ the restore icon to pc

Hey Guys.
Here's a question w/ some background.
I bought an IPOD about 6 months ago and connected it to my MAC at work...where I uploaded music and etc...
I've changed jobs...have a PC at home and at my new job. Earlyer today my IPOD came up with the restore icon, and I'm thinking since I have to reinstall everything anyways...I wanna format it to PC as well as restore it so I start from scratch with my ipod blank and my home computer.
How should I proceed?
Do I restore with a mac, then bring it to my pc? Let me know what to do.

I too am trying to do what Say Word is, BUT, even though I have done EVERYTHING on the list, the PC still won't recognize the ipod. The article covering "Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod" states: "You cannot use iPod for Mac with a Windows PC". So my question is -- how will I ever get the PC (using USB) to recognize a Mac formated iPod. HELP Puleeese!

Windows format / ipod not recognized

More of a 2 part question.
I am having the same problem as everyone else. Updated to 5.0 and 5.0.1 and my ipod is not longer recognized by itunes. I've followed all the different tutorials and "5 step fixes" and nothing works. I ran through the 5-step fix multiple times with each step being a success. Still itunes doesn't recognize the ipod and windows doesn't recognize it correctly. When I try to use ipod updater it either freezes or says "ipod service error"(something like that).
So without the ability to use ipod updater to install the new software or restore the ipod...my only option is to do a windows format of the ipod. If I do a windows format is ipod updater then going to work and let me install the software?
If you have any ideas of how I can fix it without formating that would be great, but Ive done everything I could find on these forums with no avail.

The problem very likely is due to your XP's USB port, try to connect with other port first, if not works, try to plug and replug your iPod with your PC and hope it can recognized.
It will be fine if you can find a way to format your iPod with your PC. I am a bad PC user, but I believe you cant format it without a 3rd party software. I faced the same problem as your with my brother's iPod, I managed to solve it by first refomatted it by my Mac, and do a restore of iPod update with the PC afterward
It really works and hope you can find a friend with a Mac machine for you to fix your problem

If your iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats). However there are third party programs that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows. XPlay and MacDrive for instance get good reviews. I need to transfer my iPhone's musics, songs, apps and photo, etc to the Mac and I came across this http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329" guide at Apple Support site since I owned a iPod nano.
My questions is since my iPod nano is configured for Windows will the Mac be able to read it since it's stated clearly in the guide "While a Windows formatted iPod may work on a Mac, Apple supports this configuration only with iPod shuffle."
If I follow through the guide, 1. Switch the iPod to manual update and enable disk use, 2. Locating and consolidating the iTunes Media folder, 3. Copy iTunes folder to iPod. I will still need to restore the iPod to work in Mac and end up nothing left inside meaning songs, photo all erased.
Also, anyone using third party software like http://www.fadingred.com/senuti/ Can advise if it's good to use this? And if iPod nano configured for Windows can works with this?
Need other more solution other this to transfer the mentioned data to Mac.

Where exactly is this stated? I am unable to find this statement in the KB article you mentioned. And are you talking iPhone or iPod? This KB article applies only to iPod.

my laptop won't recognise my hand me down ipod. it is formatted for a mac and i have a pc. i have the xplay3 softwhare that i was told will allow the use of the ipod. i have tried everything in the manual and then some. any help?

Run the xplay software. This will allow Windows to read the Mac formatted iPod.
Or else you can Restore the iPod in iTunes for Windows and it will work with iTunes on Windows and Mac.

So, here's the story: I got an video ipod for x-mas, and at home we have a eMac, so I set it up on there, got all my music on it, downloaded Tetris, got that on there and all was good, at least until I got back to school. At school I have a PC, so you can probably guess what happened when I hooked my ipod up to my PC, it said you must restore this ipod in order to use it on this PC, but I don't want to restore it, because it has **** near 10G on it already, including my game, and since I'm not even close to home I can't get it from the mac. Is there ANYWAY I can import/save what's currently on my ipod? Please help!

sounds good and everyone keeps saying it, but it doesn't for me. opened mac formatted ipod w/ macdrive and none of the files contained anything..no photos in the photo file, no music file anywhere in site...any ideas?? Okay, unless you restore your iPod while you're on the Mac, I believe it will still be formatted for a PC.
(You will not need to restore the iPod for transferring music to it on a Mac unless you want to upgrade the iPod's firmware on a Mac computer, then it will have to be Mac-formatted).
You see, when you recieve an iPod, it is shipped to you as a Windows-formatted iPod, probably since the majority of the population has PCs, and also, PC-formatted iPods are compatible for music transfer for a Mac also.
Does that make sense?

Best way to backup Windows Formatted Ipod to convert to Mac OS X?

My wife has a 3rd gen iPod nano which was formatted using a Windows machine which is no longer available. I now have a linux desktop and my macbook. We would like to convert her iPod for use with the my macbook, but the only way seems to be reformatting the ipod and losing all her music.
So my question is what is the best way to backup the iPod without being able to use iTunes (it won't recognize her iPod on my macbook since it is windows formatted and there is no iTunes version for Linux)? I can mount the Ipod as a disk on my Linux machine, would it work to just to copy the entire filesystem on the iPod to some temp directory on my desktop, reformat the iPod on my macbook, then remount the iPod and copy the files back to over to the iPod?

The MacBook can read the Windows formatted iPod just fine, so you can use the above suggestions to get the stuff onto the Mac's library. After that you can either leave the Nano Windows formatted and use it as is, or restore it on the Mac so it is in Mac format.

A PC formatted iPod can be used with a Mac without needing to erase or otherwise reconfigure it, except for updating the iPod's firmware on a Mac without restoring it(excluding the iPod shuffle) or storing files that are 4GB or larger on it. iTunes will not import MP3 files from an iPod; a method such as this one can be used to transfer the songs.
