Cant format my macbook...
Hey.
I'm trying to format my macbook pro 13" from 2010 with mavericks. I have tried to press the OPTION key when starting my mac, and i get the the screen called OS X Utilities. Then i tried to press the Disk utility tool but i can't press anything.
Sounds like you have a bad Recovery HD. Do you have the original Snow Leopard disc that came with the computer? If so, then you can boot from it in order to reformat the drive.
Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer. Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X. You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

It's not that you can't format it because you have no backup, it's because you'll lose everything when you do. Lesson learned. Always have a backup.

Would my friend's dvds work to format my macbook pro to factory settings as if out of the box?
i also had windows running on my mac, i used disc utility to erase the partition for windows, not bootcamp, so the partition is empty, i cant get the main hard drive extended as it was before because it gives me a message saying "could not modify partition map because filesystem verification failed", and when i try to verify it through disc utility it says that i need to my os x dvd and repair it, if i just format it, will that all go away?

Slightly more complicated answer;
You may be able to boot from the disc and use Disk Utility to partition and wipe the HDD (though it may not boot at all).
You can't install an OS from the other computer's discs. It simply will not allow the installation.
You would also be violating the software licence agreement.
As your originals are 10.5.x, you can buy the Snow Leopard retail installer (10.6.3) and format and install from that.

I think it's time to format my MacBook Pro. It came with OS X Lion, but when Mountain Lion came out I upgraded (and payed for it). Now, if I format my MacBook without DVD, through recovery disk will I be able to get Mountain Lion again? Or do I have to pay for it again?

What do you think you are going to gain by doing that.
I am running on an image that was originally Snow Leopard. It was then upgraded to Lion which was upgrade to Mountain Lion. I am having no problem even with three upgrades.

Instructions examples:
1) Go into disk utility and erase the hard drive.
Problem: when I do that, it doesn't let me because the erase button is in the "greyed", so I can't click on that.
2) Restart the computer and hold down "c" and follow the instrctions...
Problem: I did that, but it just restart normally, it doesn't take me to some special screen.
3) Restart with the Mac OS CD installer and hold down "c" as it reboots.
Problem: same as number 2.
4) Restart and hold down "option" - disk utility - erase HD
Problem: I did that, and the hard drive icon with the arrow pointing up pops up; however, when I click on it, it just boot up as usual, and when I go into disk utility, I had the same problem as number 1.
This is really frustrating!! Please help!!

That only works for other drives/partitions, you can't format or erase the boot drive/volume/partition obviously.

No disk inserted, you need a bootable disk to use the c key at boot.
3) Restart with the Mac OS CD installer and hold down "c" as it reboots.

Perhaps you held it too late.

The option key held at boot gives you Startup Manager, which gives you a choice of bootable options provided the boot cd is inserted obviously.
If you didn't wait for the cd boot option to appear and clicked the hard drive and arrow right away, it's possible you missed the cd boot option as it takes a bit longer to appear on the screen.
If you went all over the above and can't boot from the 10.5 cd, then what likely occured is your operating system was upgraded to a later OS X version like 10.6 or later and the firmware has been updated to ignore booting or recognizing that 10.5 boot disk as that operating system is now obsolete.
Another option is your using the wrong 10.5 disk, like it's from another model of Mac with different hardware drivers, thus can't be used on your machine.
Sometimes the disk is a retail copy, but is only for compatible Mac's that came PRIOR to the release of the retail disk, obviously not for Mac's that came afterwards because of new hardware drivers not on the burned disk.
If your machine is on 10.4, it might not have enough RAM for 10.5.
If your machine is on 10.5 now, then you should be able to boot from the disk that came with the machine, unless it's defective, scratched or dirty.
If your Mac is a Intel processor Mac, then you should be using 10.6 at least now, it's still getting updates to 10.6.8 (not for Safari or Java 6, but you can disable both and use Firefox)
Usually a 10.5 issued Mac is too old for the later OS X versions of 10.7 and later, perhaps the MacPro tower being the rare exceptions.
OS X 10.4/10.5 need to upgrade, 10.6.8 ok still
Also usually a 10.5 era issued Mac is beyond it's end of life stage, likely to die soon and not worth spending great sums of money to upgrade RAM and all software for 10.7 and beyond, your better off buying a new machine for 10.7+ or use it on 10.6.8 max until it drops dead or sell it online.
You didn't state your Mac's model identifier, it can be gleamed from System Profiler or Apple menu > About this Mac > More information.
With the model identifier, current operating system version running and the RAM amount installed, we can look up the machine on our database and recommend a course of action or if you cannot install 10.5 on that machine. -

Backup all of your files immediately if not sooner!
Your hard drive is failing.
You can either have the failing drive replaced ( if older Mac and no extended AppleCare, this won't be too expensive to replace) or purchase an external hard drive.
You need, at least one external hard drive to both partition for a data backup drive and to install and boot/run OS X Mavericks simultaneously.
If you have an older iMac that has FireWire 800 connection on the back, purchase an external FW800 so that your iMac can run OS X Mavericks from that drive as fast as it can.
If your iMac is even older and only has FireWire 400 most newer FW drives can run at the slower FW speed.
This is still faster than a USB 2.0 style external hard drive.

Thanks guysYou shouldn't have a problem. If you do it a lot (but a lot) of times maybe your hard drive could have some problems. But when you format the disk the only thing you do is restarting the partitioning table. If you securely erase your content all disk will be set to 0 values and maybe will have better performance.
You shouldn't worry about it. If you use a SSD you shoud consider a little more than with a HDD. SSD's havve a number writting cicles. But with a really intensive use for a normal-advanced user a good SSD can last more than 5 years without a problem.
My experience with a Windows computer tells me that after reinstalling Windows more than 30 times, in all benchmarks HDD scores the same.
With mac I've been more lucky and I only had to reinstall once!

Error screen after formatting my macbook
I formatted my MacBook Air a few days ago in order to decongest it because it showed I had barely any disk space left despite me removing almost everything from the computer. Before formatting it, I backed the hard drive up to an external drive in Mac OS Extended (as recommended on a post). After formatting the laptop, I was taken to a menu which had options such as Restore from time machine backup or reinstall the OS etc. I chose to reinstall the OS since the reason I formatted the paptop was because of the issue with disk space, and restoring from the backup will essentially just take up all the space again. After about 4 hours of the reinstallation process, the installation stopped and the computer froze. I decided to restart the computer. The computer did not automatically go back to that menu, so I pressed Cmd + R as recommended online. This took me back to the menu and at this point I needed my computer to work so I may do assignments. I chose to restore the backup instead. After an almost complete restoration, I got an error message stating that the restore cannot be completed. Baffled, I restarted the computer. When I restarted it, it said "the computer was restarted due to a problem" or something along those lines. Since then, right after displaying that message it will give me an error message which I have attached though a picture. Immediately after showing that code, the computer restarts and does the same. Over and over again. I am a student and do not have access to funds or an apple store, which is why I decided to format it myself instead of seeking professional help. Please help me understand what is going on and how I may fix it. Thank you.
Do a backup. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Reformat the drive using Disk Utility/Erase Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click the Option button and select GUID. Then re-install the OS.

First, I'd advise you to make a backup. Time Machine is fine, but I recommend making a bootable backup with Carbon Copy Cloner if possible.
Then, insert the Snow Leopard DVD (it's a retail version, right? Not a grey disk meant for another machine?) and run the installer on the disk. Should be automatic from that point in. You don't need to reformat your drive.
