I just migrated into a new MBP from an old one.
It did not bring the music over. Apple's instructions are to use the Home Sharing feature of iTunes.
Open iTunes on your old Mac. Select Home Sharing under the Advanced menu. Sign in. Do the same on your new computer. Then when the library appears under Home Sharing on the left-hand panel on your new computer's iTunes, you can select all and Add To Library.
That's what Apple says, anyway.

so i recently got the color ipod for my birthday, and i have the older model ipod [first ipod made i believe?]. i also am using a different computer than when i was first using my old ipod. i have about 3500 songs on my old ipod, and i dont know how to get the songs on my new ipod. they arent on my new computer, so ive been trying everything i can think of, if anyone can help me, it would be very much appreciated !!

First of all, put the music from the old iPod back to your new computer (and then into iTunes).
try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it can be messy.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
There is also CopyPod. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.
Once the music is safely in your new iTunes library, you can transfer it to the new iPod.

Ok. My problem currently is that I want to bring music from my old computer to my new one but my old computer is literally destroyed. My notebook had a fatal error and won't work period I've tried everything. So I never got the opportunity to adjust my ipod accordingly. One more thing, if your iPod is set to update automatically you need to take care connecting to an empty iTunes on another computer. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7.3 or later installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that way you can continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed above your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

Easy. Just restore the new iPod from the backup of the old one. When you first connect the iPod to your computer to activate the iPod, iTunes should give you message that says it found a backup and would you like to restore the iPod from that backup or set up the iPod as a new iPod, Say restore from backup. Then sync the music you want to the iPod. Restoring from backup will keep all your all settings and app data but you will have to reenter keychain items like passwords.

I had an old ipod with an old laptop, both are gone, now I have an itouch with some music from old ipod, which it was downloaded it from old pc itunes library'.
now with the authorized itunes library, am very limited in my usage of itunes. the old music that it was in old ipod that i have in my itouch it can not be manage in itunes library, i cannot create playlists and burn them to a cd, even with recently purchased itunes, cannot really sync cause it will erased my old music from previous library... please help!:)

The 1st and 2nd gen iPod shuffle can only be used with one iTunes library (not "account") at a time. Your Apple ID and password does not matter. (Later shuffles can be used with more than one iTunes library, IF it is set to use the Manually manage music option.)
So, if you sync it with a different iTunes library, the previous content will be replaced. You need to offload the existing content to your new computer's drive as the first step.
You cannot transfer song files from iPod to computer using iTunes, except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store. However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer. If you do an Internet search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links. (The CNET article seems to be popular.)
