any help would be welcome

This is right off G.Skill's Website for the RAM;
2. The default DIMM frequency depends on its SPD, which is the standard way of accessing information from a memory module. Under the default state, some memory modules for overclocking may operate at a lower frequency than the vendor-marked value.
3.G.SKILL guarantees module compatibility within this specific Quad Channel kit. Combining with other memory kit or module (even with same part number) is not recommended to avoid any compatibility issue.
The OP doesn't specify the exact RAM kit, so I can only speculate the combination of two kits may be part of the problem.
Added: 32GB G.Skill DDR2133 (8 x 4GB) two quad-channel kits # F3-17000CL11Q-16GBZL
RAM calls for 1.6v's. Sandy-E platform is 1.5v's + or - 0.075v's.

  • X79A-GD65(8D) won't boot/enter BIOS

Hi, just got my new board and after rebuilding, it won't let me enter BIOS . POST seems to finish, i see the graphic, then the screen goes blank with a flashing cursor top right of screen.
    specs as follows
    X79A-GD65(8D) board
    32gb Corsair ram (8x4gb)
    Gigabyte t560TI
    Seaget 2TB and 1TB HDD's
    i7-3820 proccessor
Cant find out what the BIOS verion is
I have stripped it right back to 1 stick of ram and one HDD, no change.  Have completely dismantled and checked all connectors.
All help gratefully appreciated, this is/was my main work PC and i'm stuck badly without it.

I'm thinking the UEFI/BIOS version may be the problem. Early production mainboards may have been shipped with v1.0 or v1.2. To support the CPU you have, v1.4 is required.
Added: Standard USB keyboard and mouse? Initial startup should be with minimum components, not 8 sticks of RAM and all the HDD's. Makes it hard to troubleshoot if there is a problem. With just the one stick in the primary dimm slot, power off, pull the PSU power cord, remove the battery for awhile, clear CMOS and see if you can get into the UEFI/BIOS when tapping the Delete key. Was there a code number in the bottom right of the screen also?

Do you have a bootable USB stick? Try the CMOS clear first.

  • X79A-GD65 8D DrMOS overheatiing

    Hi
So I managed to get my setup working properly on BIOS 1.6. It is as follows:
    3930K C2 (cooled with Corsair H100)
    X79A-GD65 8D
    4x4Gb gSkill 1866 RAM
MSI GTX 580 Twin Frozr II (cooled by a corsair H80)
    Corsair GS700 PSU
    Aerocool Xpredator Case
I made this setup mainly to render a video sequence with Maya 2012. The takes of this video are for an Airplane dogfighting game we're developing at my company, so the video is full of clouds and its pretty heavy on rendering. So I overclocked the 3930K to 4,6 and it were doing pretty fine until last night when the mobo turned off without any BSODs or any warning.
The processors were all using 100% of them during almost two days without a stop before they shut down... The highest temp on the hotest core were 73 Cº and the wattage consuption measured by CoreTemp were around 173W. By that time the Vcore was on 1.360mv and clocked on 4,6Ghz (100BCLK x 46), with every other voltage set on the mobo's default.
My DrMOS alarm were on so I imagined it reached the 130º and switched off. I didn't knew it managed to reach theses temps so easily though.
On my OC setting I messed ONLY with core voltage and PLL voltage, so everything else I lowered on the below description was from the default setting.
I'm trying many OC settings to lower DrMOS temps, as processor temps and voltages are OK. I don't know which voltages affect DrMOS at most, so I tryed to lower Agent Voltage first.
Got it from 1.224mv default to 1.100mv and worked nice, but DrMOS alarm was still getting on and after the 9th pass of Prime 95 it turned off with processors at 75º and 195W.
I finaly got it from shutting down when I started lowering Vcore and raising PLL. It achieved almost the same temps, and the alarm still got on, but it didn't switched off anymore.
I got 4,6Ghz (100 BCLK x 46) at 1.340mv with 1.840mv PLL, 1.100mv System Agent and all other voltages set on stock.
But as I live in Brazil and its pretty hot the temps here on this time of the year (ambient in an afternoon is about 27-30 Cº), I was wondering about the DrMOS Alarm that was still on on the 2nd pass of Prime 95...
Later I will try to lower Vcore even more and raise PLL a bit to see if it helps.
    My question are:
1- Should I try to reaply thermal Paste to the DrMOS chips to the mobo heatsink? I have an MX-4 here.
2- Which voltage should I try to mess to lower the DrMOS Temps?
3- There is anyway on this mobo to change the TDP of the CPU? I didn't found this on BIOS... Only found option to enhance its OCP which apparently doesn't helps much...
Sorry for the long post. I only tryed to enlighten the situation the most with my poor english.
    I apreciate any help.
    Thank you very much

Fairly sure it is gray thermal tape being used. One simple test is to press down on the heatsink with a pencil erasor and wait a few seconds and see if the temperature starts to drop. If it does, you have a contact or alignment problem. Out of habit, before I mount the mainboard in the case, all the screws are checked for tightness on the backside of the mainboard.
I'll run Prime95 after the current render session ends and check that when the Alarm led apears.
Replace the gray thermal tape with the MX-4 would be a good idea?? I mean, if theres a tape, after removing it, wouldn't it leave a tiny gap space betwin the heatsink and the chips? To use the Paste they should be touching each other, right? or is it possible to apply the paste and tighten the screws to eliminate the gap? I did it once on my old mobo which I had one spare to try out, but I confess I'm pretty afraid of doing something wrong with this one...
I think that lowering Vcore and stabilizing the clock raising PLL might be working fine because it have been on a rendering session for almost 6 hours now and no alarm led so far. But I'm pretty sure that if it was Prime 95 the led would turn on in about 2 minutes... As the rendering despite using 100% processor power only consumes around 170W with this OC settings, and Prime 95 consumes around 195W. After the render is finished I'll mess a little bit more with that and check the temps and maybe try for 4.7Ghz with 24/7 voltages.
This processor is damm good! I'm geting pretty good clocks with very low voltages! If it weren't for these DrMOS geting this hot I think 5.0Ghz could be achieved or 4,8 - 4,9Ghz with 24/7 voltages...

  • X79A-GD65 (8D) dual bios flashing problem. One works, the other is bricked.

    Hi guys,
First post but not excatly the right scenario I wanted to post under.
This all started when MSI updater decided out of no where to download and auto run the bios updater. Before I had a chance to close it, it had started the update process before I could close a number of program's that I was running. Obviously my windows decided to freeze on me. I had no choice but to reboot. On the restart my PC was stuck on a F2/F6 (could be F9) loop. So I switched to BIOS B and all was good in the world.
My attempts to recover BIOS A have been unsuccessful. I tried clearing the CMOS first, this caused the pc to reboot every ten seconds in instead of the auto recovery. I have yet to reach post yet. So I tried the forum flash method flipping the switch after the tool had loaded up back to A. No luck on 1.7 Or 1.7 beta 181. Done a mem test which ruled out the RAM as well. Not sure what to try next.
As stated before everything works fine on B, A must be super bricked or something. Either that or the forum flash method failed or I'm just doing it wrong.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Makes it risky for any future updating of the good chip without a second one to have as a safety net.
RMA is always an option. Should be no problem getting it covered under warranty.
I'm contemplating an RMA but i honestly feel it is more hassle then it's worth while it's working fine on B. I just won't bother updating the BIOS unless they release something which seriously effect's/help's me. This is the first motherboard i have had with a dual BIOS so i'm usually quite safe when it come's to updating things like this. Just my fault for a moment of stupidity.

  • X79A-GD65 (8D) - Get stuck at 12x cpu ratio multiplier or 1200MHz

Hi all.  Just wanted to see if anyone else observed this with the new X79 chipset motherboard and the 3930K or 3960X sandy bridge-e cpu.
When trying to overclock the motherboard in any way
    1) CPU Ratio set to any number
    2) Per Core Maximum ratio / multiplier
    3) OC Genie II
and then trying a CPU stress utility such as Prime95
The CPU gets locked at 1200Mhz, or 12 x 100Mhz and never goes higher than that.  At the same time, the temperature sensors believe the CPU is locked at 91 degrees celsius.  So I believe on this bios version of 1.2 on the MS-7760 motherboard (X79A-GD65), it thinks 91 degrees is too hot, and never goes above 1200MHz.  I've also tried OC Genie and manual overclocking at bios version 1.1, and I cannot go over 1200Mhz.
Only at stock speeds (no overclocking), with the 3930K, at full CPU load tests with Prime95, it does go to 3500Mhz, or 35 x 100, correctly.
Right now I cannot overclock at all, whether with OC Genie, or manual cpu ratio multipliers.
Tweaktown and HWBot and several other websites have observed this.  I'm running the latest 1.2 bios, and still get stuck at 12x.
    http://hwbot.org/forum/showthread.php?s=51e18bdfe400391d0955716a5c66343d&p=138647#post138647
    http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/4423/msi_x79a_gd65_intel_x79_motherboard_review/index5.html

Scratch that.  It was happy yesterday, but first boot of the morning today and back to stuck at 12x/91C.  Will changing other voltages remedy this?  I read something on a review website suggesting this was a problem with the actual 3930K/3960X chips, and not necessarily a motherboard issue.
If I raise my cpu base clock from 100 to 125 and use a 36 multiplier, the machine forces the memory to run at 2,000 MHz, which according to the SPD shown in bios should be OK, but I couldn't get it to boot like that.  Is there anything I can change to allow the machine to work in that configuration?
Edit:  Just read yet another OC review (this time on HardwareSecrets) and found the following:
"The “correct” way of overclocking Intel CPUs with Turbo Boost technology is to change the clock multiplier that each core will use when the Turbo Boost technology kicks in."
I just tried changing the core ratio limit for all six cores to 45, setting the cpu ratio to auto, and leaving the core voltage at 1.375V, and it seems to work again.  Boots into Win7, coretemp displays correct temperatures, and when I load the cpu using prime95, it hits 4.5GHz.  I will try setting core voltage to auto also so that the cpu doesn't stay at 1.375V at idle when not necessary.  I'd still like to OC the memory in theory - not sure how much boost I'd get by running the memory above 1600 MHz.  I'll be using this PC for some computational fluid dynamics, so every bit of speed I can eek out of it will be put to use.
Edit 2:  Auto core voltage works, vcore drops to 0.840V at idle, and idle temps drop back down closer to room temperature (using an Antec Sonata Elite case with a Corsair H80 water cooler, so slightly less airflow than ideal but I have the case fans optimized for now by relocating the system blower fan to a drive bay and adding a 120mm fan in the lower drive bays pulling air out of the side of the case).

  • X79A-GD65 (8D) memory issues.

Greetings Everyone! I've just joined this forum.
My issue is that i cant use all eight memory sockets without the board getting stuck in POST with the debug code 67.
I currently use the mainboard on this computer but with only 5 sticks in.
The memorysticks i use are two sets of "Corsair 16GB (4x4096MB) CL9 1600Mhz VENGEANCE Quad Channel" totalling 32GB.
I cannot add any of the remaining sticks in slot 4, 6 and 8. I've done it in all thinkable methods even test booting with every stick placed in every slot. took me a good two hours of testing.
I've also tried the sticks in a Gigabyte 1366 motherboard with four slots and both sets run on it.
I contacted Corsair and it looks like i have to send the memorysticks to them for a checkup but i wont know for sure until i hear from them later next week. I'll discuss the issue further with them then.
This is my current set-up (i point out that the parts i've changed are the Mainboard, CPU and memory from the 1366 computer)
    Mainboard: MSI X79A-GD65(8D).
    CPU: Intel Core i7-3820.
Memory: Two sets of Corsair Vengeance Quad channel 4x4Gb 1600MHz.
Graphics card: Sapphire Radeon HD 6950 OC.
    Main boot device: WD 500Gb.
    PSU: Corsair HX-650

Hi everyone and i must thank you for such speedy answers and support.
On the server issue. I do use alot of servers, not normal servers as you would think but gameservers. I like to run dedicated servers for like CS:S, Minecraft and such and i have startded playing ARMA:2 alot lately and i want to run them simultaneously for extended periods.
I was planning to install ARMA:2 in the RAM because of its extreme loading times when editing maps and missions. And also i like to run Firefox, Java, WinRAR and other background programs from the RAM.
I also want the amount of RAM for the pleasure of just having it. I understand how a primitive feeling that is but it feels good.
I understand now that i will never get all sticks to work but i do run 5 of them at this moment so i got 20GB of memory and already have set up a 12GB ramdisk.
I will discuss the issue with Corsair when we get in touch on the Support thread i've created hoping to send my modules to them and change them to a 8 stick kit and me paying the shipment and differance in price.
EDIT: Should i flash the BIOS anyway according to xmad's statement? Should i in that case default the BIOS and run only 2 sticks?
p.s. I have got to stop editing these posts....

  • X79A-GD65 (8D) will not boot with 4930K or 3930K

    Short version:
My system will not boot but gets stuck at "09 Power on South Bridge Initialization"
    Detailed description:
I just bought this system and am when I tried to start it it got stuck at "09 Power on South Bridge Initialization". I have removed everything that is not necessary (gfx-card, HDDs, etc.) and only have the CPU and one memory stick inserted (in slot 1 as per the manual). I have also unplugged and put back all power cables from the PSU several times. I have also tried using BIOS A and B.
As I read on this forum that a BIOS update was needed for IVY-Bridge CPUs I bought a 3930K today to see if I could get the system up and running but it still gives me the same error code.
My board serial number is 601-7760-010B1312109204, assuming it is manufactured 1312 = December 2013.
I don't know the BIOS revision as I have never managed to get past the 09 status code.
Any ideas on what the problem could be?
Bought this monster PC as I have a delivery for a client in need of some RAM-heavy processing, so am really starting to feel stressed out about this by now.
    Thanks in advance!
    System details:
     - MSI X79A-GD65 (8D) X79 S-2011 ATX

     - KINGSTON 64GB 1600MHZ DDR3 ECC REG CL11 DIMM (4X16GB) W/TS (two kits, 128GB in total, don't really need ECC but that's what I could find needing 16GB sticks)

even compared to just 10 years ago sales staff have became really dumb as there just hiring people who do not care about anything as long as they get there cut of a sale (usually all they know is basic Consumer parts they stock) and nearly non of them unless they specialize in that level of equipment will have 0 idea what they work with on a pro level part (ECC memory tends to be used on servers and Professional workstations so if they do not use that type of gear then they probably have no idea what ECC really is at all)!
also in that time some major things have happened especially with computer parts like the memory controller moved from the Chipset to the CPU same with the SATA controller , onboard GPU (thats now on the CPU and some have it some don't) and alot of other things and I guess that the people you dealed with had no idea the memory support has very little to do with the board (all the board can do is have BIOS Timing sets now and lists of parts it supports) and is now to do with the CPU alot more as it has the important stuff on it (there very close to a SOC (System On Chip) now)!
if you plan on building another computer remember to do some research yourself before you get a CPU as it is nearly the most important thing of all and they have different features tied to them and do not expect sales guys to have a idea unless there also a Technical support staff member too and work on computers that are of the same class your trying to make and have at least used the same level gear (usually if your doing something like that find a friend who is a computer nerd tell him what your trying to do and get him to help you choose all the parts)!
let me know how it goes when you get the Xeon and have it installed?

just overclocking using the FSB results in failure to boot at (iirc) anything above 105??
This system architecture is not designed for significant changes to the base clock.  Overclocking is supposed to be done via the multipliers/ratios only.  The behaviour you describe is absolutely normal.

  • X79a-gd65 (8D) won't pass bios

     Hi,
I'm back again with my x79a-gd65 (8D)...I did a stupid thing I tested the "OC genie Software" from inside windows 7...
The program asked me to reboot so it could complete OC setup - so I did. It passed BIOS, loaded Windows login. Then I revieced  an error when logging in (something and userenv.dll), then getting a black screen (apperently "logged in"). Hit "ctrl+alt+del" and logging out, then "shut off".
Started it up, passed BIOS, I got the choice to Repair Windows or Start Normal. Trying Repair Windows first, it loads the files, then straight back to the choice again Repair Win or Norm... Testing start without repair i got a Blue Screen, reboot, and back to the choice after passing BIOS.
Shut off my computer, killed the PSU, switched on the PSU and then my computer. Now it doesn't pass BIOS check, I recieve a debug code "B2" (Legacy Option ROM Initialization)...
I've had the same setup since i bought it 14 months ago with no problems before this.
Any ideas? I'm in panic mode atm.

If you are going to fill all 8 slots, you are better off getting an 8 stick matched and tested kit. Reason, mixing kits even though the same part number may have different chips on them and not be compatible with each other. That particular RAM manufacturer even has some disclaimers about that with some kits.
    That's right.
    http://www.gskill.com/products.php?index=427
    3. G.SKILL guarantees module compatibility within this specific Quad Channel kit. Combining with other memory kit or module (even with same part number) is not recommended to avoid any compatibility issue.
In fact, 8 memory modules is not a good idea at all.
There will be a huge bandwidth demand and you'll need to raise the voltages and/or to slow them down.
Otherwise you'll get into stability issues.

  • Regarding X79A-GD65(8D) 4.4 BIOS

I notice Station drivers is showing a 4.4 BIOS and since I am getting my 4930K tomorrow, I'd like to have the latest BIOS installed.
Having said that, I only really trust the BIOS files that I get from here so is there any chance of one of you fine gentlemen posting it :D
    Thanks!

It's currently not available. But if MSi fixed the link you can download it from product site as it is an official bios: http://www.msi.com/product/mb/X79A-GD65--8D-.html#/?div=BIOS
WAIT FOR THE MSI RELEASE. Don't download it from a third-party site. MSI might have removed it because there was an issue with the file.
If just wanting to update for Ivy-Bridge E support you can use 4.3 anyway as it already supports 4820K, 4939K and 4960X: http://www.msi.com/product/mb/X79A-GD65--8D-.html#/?div=CPUSupport

    2 x 590GTX cards is not quad sli, but two-way SLI (2 x GPUx2).
    Yes, it is supported.
Even though the VGA test report list for the mainboard does not mention this configuration (it probably wasn't tested), it mentions 2 x 295GTX cards which also have a dual GPU.
Thats great thanks for the quick response although http://uk.geforce.com/optimise/guides/how-to-build-a-quad-sli-system  according to that guide 2x gtx590 is quad sli hence why i asked .
    Anyway thanks again

  • MSI X79A-GD65 no POST and no POST LED

Long story short, I was redoing my watercooling loop and the pump wasn't getting fed water correctly, leading to the CPU overheating. I let the computer cool down and made sure water was moving through it properly before turning it back on.
When I turned it back on, my computer wouldn't post, and there was no debug LED code coming on. I checked the voltages with a multimeter, everything seemed to read correctly except for the CPU Vcore on the voltage checkpoint: it was reading 0. I checked the EPS connector and it was delivering 12v.
So what do you guys think, dead motherboard or dead CPU?

I would remove and reinstall the cpu. While it is out inspect the cpu socket for bent pins.
Also, inspect the VRM section of the mainboard. Do you see any burn marks? Swelled capacitors etc? Any burning smell from the area?
Finally remove and re-seat all of the components and wiring. Just in case.
If still no help, either RMA both components or borrow a cpu to test.

  • MSI X79A-GD65 (8D) Boot error B2

I bought my ssystem last week. All hardware came in and I build it up.
This is the hardware I have:
    Mainboard: MSI X79A-GD65 (8D)
    CPU: Intel Core i7-3930K/3.2GHz 12MB LGA2011 Hexa-core
    Case: Corsair CASE Graphite 600T
Power supply: Thermaltake SMART 650W/ 80plus
    Cooler: Thermaltake Contac 39
SSD: Intel SSD 520 series 240GB
    HDD: Seagate HI 3.5" 2TB Barracuda 7200RPM
    Graphics: MSI N660Ti PE 2GD5/OC GTX660Ti
    Memory: CORSAIR DDR3 1600MHz 16GB Kit 2x8GB Domi DDR3 - 240 pin - 1,5V - CL9 - 2x 8 GB Kit
DVD: DVD RW AD-5280 24x DL SATA Black Bulk 24x/24x - Serial ATA
    The problem:
Everything looks fine all fans are spinning when I power on the computer. Keyboard lights up. I can even press del to enter setup.
I never get into setup though. It just displays error code B2 in the bottom right corner and a blinking cursor in the top left corner.
So always error B2. I see this error to on the LED's in the mainboard.
    What I have tried:
    - Boot the system with one memory module in Dimm socket 1
    - Boot the system with on memory module in Dimm socket 3
    - Place the graphic cards in another PCI-E socket
    - Double checked the connector of the power on the graphic card, the mainboard, near the cpu and the graphic card power on the mainboard.
    - Boot the system without any devices, just cpu, memory and graphic card.
    - Reset the CMOS with the button on the back of the mainboard.
Can somebody help me solve my problem? I have no idea what to do anymore?
Oh: 1 thing just came to mind, I have connected all my system fans to my case instead of on my mainboard. I can manage the speed that way, can it have something to do that there is no Sysfan1 connected to the mainboard? (A bit far searched I guess).
    Help would be much apreciated.

I just wanted to let the readers know that I found the problem.
I have tried to screw out my old Videocard and placed that in my new system. It booted without any problems.
The MSI Geforce GTX 660 Ti videocard caused my problem. I have read some things about this card to on the internet.
They tend to use to much power in this videocard so it can cause POST problems.
Here is some more info about it: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/MSI-GTX-660-670-overvolting-PowerEdition,18013.html
I hope this info helps other people to.
