Cant import iPhoto library. Locks up while "upgrading Library"
I have a new macbook air running OS X Mavericks. I tried to just copy the iphoto library from old mac to the pics library of new mac. I photo locks up while "upgrading library"
Tried to use migration assistant and it says I must first upgrade the OS of the old mac. My old mac cannot upgrade to mavericks, it is too old.
Suggestions?
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

IPhoto 6 crashing while upgrading library
iPhoto 6 crashes continually while attempting to upgrade my library of 16,000 photos. Have attempted repairing disk permissions and changing permissions on the library folder. No luck... My library does reside on an external firewire drive. Any ideas, aside from reloading iPhoto5?
Ok, .... had the same permissions problem. In reading the error message, it listed a specific file name (photo). I found that file, > get info> file was locked. Unchecked (unlocked) and retry opening iPhoto. Get same message EXCEPT the file name was located in Orig. folder (duh). Unlocked same file in Orig. folder, expected after retry to get several file names....one at a time?.... but install completed. I have no idea how that file got locked and why no others were.... but I was done. BTW.. I had only 3900 photos....
Hope this helps.

IPhoto migration hangs, can't upgrade Library
I saw a couple similar posts on this, but the solutions given aren't working. We have copied over the Library contents intact from old iMac to new one (via Firewire). Launching iPhoto gives message about "must upgrade, may take a few minutes..." That process starts, cooks fine for 4-5 minutes, status bar progressing OK, then hangs with 10 or 11 minutes remaining. No change for hours, must force quit to get out. I've tried this with Activity monitor running and the CPU drops to nothing at the stuck point. brain-dead.
Tried option-launch to specify library location, no help. Tried copying iPhoto Library to desktop, then specifying library location, no help. I'm not seeing all the steps that TD suggested for another user with same problem, (the move to desktop solution), so can't replicate further. Please help! Thanks!Given that the upgrade stops at the same point it suggests there’s something in the Library that is causing the problem.
Try Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.

IPhoto doesn't launch while upgrading
After ugrading mavericks iPhoto doesn't run. I've got a message : "impossible to run while upgrading iPhoto". but I'm sure it's already done !
Is it normal ?Yes. I have put the downloading one into the trash and now it runs !
I think it's the same case for iMovie.
I don't know how i managed to get the two but now it works fine.
Thank you ! -
Iphoto crashing while upgrading library
i transferred my old photo library from my iMac G4 (10.2.8) to my iMac OSX (10.6.7) by trashing the OSX Iphoto folder and importing the G4 folder via FireWire. Now when i try to open Iphoto it says I have to choose a Library, which I do. Then it says I need to upgrade that Library. Every time it hangs about 9/10 of the way through. I restarted the computer and the same thing happened.
Guidance, please...It's hard to know how to proceed here.
Some file or other is causing the issue, but as that version of iPhoto is so old it's hard to know how you might fix it.
See if iPhoto Library Manager will rebuild it. Long shot but worth a try. If it doesn't you need to recover the files from the Library and start over from scratch.

How to import iPhoto album from CD (not entire library)?
I am trying to set up a workflow where multiple people in multiple cities can export an album from iPhoto and send the CD to me. Once I receive it, I'll import it into my iPhoto library. I would like to import it directly in to Aperture though. What is the best way to do this?
Should I import into iPhoto then have my library linked to Aperture or should I keep everything in Aperture? I do not need to edit -- only catalog based on the keywords each person attaches to each photo. I don't think that exporting the photos by themselves (instead of the album they are in) gives me the comments field so I would lose the comments. That is why I need the entire album instead.
I hope this makes sense. Please let me know if you have any more questions.
Thanks in advance.Hi Terence,
Yes, they are using v7. The thing is, since I posted the question, I found that doing an album burn (not a file export) will save the data, but in a file other than the image file. When you mount the CD you just burned to in iPhoto, the data shows up in the comments field. When you import the data though, the comments don't get imported.
I found a third party utility called iPhoto Library Manager that takes care of this. It allows you to do a lot of stuff like imports, library merges, etc. that iPhoto doesn't do. Very handy little app, but I think iPhoto should at least allow you to import an album from another system with all the info intact (especially since it exports it into the xml file included with the photos).

Updating Itunes Library locks up after upgrading to 7.3
After updating itunes, I open the program and it immediately begins "Updating itunes Library." It locks up after completing 3/4 of the library update. The program is then unresponding. What can be done to remedy this problem?
I am having the Exact Same Problem, I also notice in the Task Manager that iTunes.exe is using an average of 92-95% of the CPU... Yet I have let it run for 2 hours and still nothing!

Cant import songs-itunes locks up!
I just bought a new computer-Hp p2610, I downloaded Itunes and moved all of my files from my other pc(XP-26 gigs of music) I only transferred over the music-nothing else.
When I attempt to import a cd with itunes, itunes will begin importing for a few seconds and then will just freeze in the middle. I have not been able to import one track. Itunes pulls up the cd info and will play them all back no problem-it just wont importing without freezing.
I am able to rip cds using other programs, but Its a process to transfer everything multiple times for every cd.
I have reinstalled itunes several times, I have clicked the error correction box, and have attempted to import using just about every option there is. All my updates are current, both for the ipod, and for windows, Hp has not yet released any updates for my drive.
Can anyone help me? I have absolutely no clue what to do, Ive googled this issue, and find things that are similar, but not the same-also most issues I find tend to be several years old, making searches even harder.
HELP!!!anyone have any ideas? im willing to try just about anything....except del taco

I'm trying to import photos from my iphoto library, but keep getting a message saying I cant import from 7.1.5, that I need to upgrade to 7.1.5 or later. But I have version 8.1.2. I don't know what to do. I've been able to import in the past.
Sounds like an issue with the iPhoto Library
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

hi i upgraded iphoto and now when i open it it says library locked no permission ect,
i downloaded iphoto library manager but im just not cokputer savvy enough to do anythhing
HELP!! i just want my photos back and want to be able to empty my phone of pics again.First open the iPhoto Library package with the Finder as shown in this screenshot:'
Look for the file named iPhotoLock.data and move it to the Trash in the Dock. Launch iPhoto and see if that helped.
If not Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Aperature freezing while importing iPhoto library
As posted on another thread, Aperture is freezing mid-import; in my case, it's happening when importing an iPhoto library with over 3,000 images. If I move the mouse during import, the program freezes; if I wait for it to go on its own, it will eventually freeze, and freeze so badly the entire computer has to be hard-restarted.
Connect the two Macs so iMac can access the library on your old Mac. Then try this method:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the iMac's Picture folder as the destination folder for the new library.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note: your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

Cant import old iPhoto library
I've just swapped Mac's, and i have copied over my iPhoto library. When i open iPhoto, i can open the library and view it, but when i close the application and restart it, it says it can't find a library.
Any help would be appreciated...troynelson
try delete the com.apple.iphoto.plist file from the home / library / preferences folder and reset the library choice once more. See if that helps.
