Cant install ITunes or Quick Time it says a file is missing that the installer package needs

Each time I try to install ITunes of Quick Time on my Windows XP machine with 2 gig of RAM and running service pack 3 it fails and says that a file the installer package needs is missing. How can I resolve this issue?

Your operating system is fine. No need to worry about that.

That one is often a compatibility mode problem. Try the following document, only be sure that none of the boxes in the compatibility mode tab are checked (not just the compatibility mode box itself):

doublechecking something before proceeding ... are any boxes ticked in the Compatibility tab for your QuickTime?

Each time I try to install itunes I get a windows installer message telling me that the installation package could not be opened.  Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package.....

I'd first try downloading an installer from the Apple website using a different web browser:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
If you use Firefox instead of IE for the download (or vice versa), do you get a working installer?

Can anyone help solve this problem

Exactly the same problems as many others with iTunes 10.5 and my Windows 7 32 bit laptop: An error occurred during the installation of assembly 'Microsoft.VC80.CRT .type="win32", … HRESULT:0x800736FD. I followed the Apple instructions to completely uninstall earlier iTunes and all Apple applications and then tried to re-install iTunes 10.5. Numerous attempts. Still no success. Constantly goes through the install and then rolls back after failure.
By unzipping using WinRAR and installing each module separately it seems that the module that fails is the AppleApplicationSupport.msi
Finally I uninstalled everything again and reinstalled iTunes 10.4.1. This installed perfectly. So at least I still have iTunes.
I was able to install iTunes 10.5 on myWindows XP SP3 desktop.
I noticed with WinRAR that the AppleApplicationSupport.msi file with 10.5 is a completely different size to that with 10.4.1. This suggests to me a conflict between the latest AppleApplicationSupport.msi and Windows 7.

  • Help to install iTunes and Quick Time please!

I really hope you can help me. I have been working my way through this forum for around 5 hours today. I have tried a number of your suggestions and have made some progress.
    - My iTunes hasn't been working for some time. I tried to uninstall it and reinstall a fresh version but it wouldn't uninstall.
    - So following forum advice, I downloaded and ran Windows Install Clean Up and also did a manual deletion exercise. This left a few odd files that wouldn't delete.
    - I have downloaded iTunes 8.2 but it won't install. I get an error message: "error writing to file: c:\programfiles\commonfiles\apple\mobile device support\syncservices\schemas\calendars.syncschema\contents\windows\calendars.ex e Verify that you have access to that directory" and eventually I get a message telling me that iTunes needs Quick Time.
    - I also downloaded the stand alone version of Quick Time. When trying to install it I get the error message "error writing to file:c:\programfiles\quicktime\pictureviewer.resources\ko.1proj\pictureviewerlo calized.dll Verify that you have access to that directory"
    - I can confirm that I am the only user of this computer and I have administrator rights.
    - I have installed the latest Microsoft updates.
    - I have restarted my computer about 3 times, after each major thing I've tried.
    Totally Stuck Now!
I did read a suggestion about using a Microsoft fix but it involves going into the registry and I don't have the confidence to do that, I don't really know what I'm doing at all, I'm just following my nose!
When my computer starts up CheckDisk says "correcting error in index $0 16208" and after correcting and sorting it says "an unspecified error occurred".
    Please help!!

It sounds as though the file referred to in the error message is corrupt and Windows cannot read it.
Try running a disk check. If it finds and fixes errors, try reininstalling. If not it it doesn't work, go on to the next step.
    Try renaming c:\programfiles\commonfiles\apple\mobile device support\syncservices\schemas\calendars.syncschema\contents\windows\calendars.ex e as ...calendars.old.
If Windows will not allow that, then rename the containing folder.
This should allow the install to proceed as it will not see the corrupt file.

  • Am unable to install iTunes.  Every time it says it cannot open because MSVCR80.dll is missing

Every time I install iTunes the message says it cannot open because file MSVCR80.dll is missing.  Help!

Click here and follow the instructions. You may need to completely remove and reinstall iTunes and all related components, or run the process multiple times; this won't normally affect its library, but that should be backed up anyway.

  • E and F drives disappear after I install iTunes and Quick Time

Whenever I install iTunes/Quick Time on my computer, my E and F drives "disappear" and I have no way of accessing them or playing CDs/DVDs. The only way I know how to get them back is to restore my computer to an earlier date. When I do that, I no longer have iTunes/Quick Time on my computer. My computer is an HP Pentium 4 with Windows XP.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can fix this problem? It drives me crazy and I can't update my iPod Shuffle very often because of what I have to go through to get my drives back when I'm done. I'd appreciate any help you can give me.

First since you have done restores, you need to goto microsofts windows update site and update windows. Then goto the PC makers site and install all updates for your model, especailly BIOs IDE controller and CD/DVD ROM updates.
    After that install itunes.
Then rightclick "My COmputer" hit Manage>Device manager and see if theres a "Code 41" error message showing beside your CD DVD Drives

  • Trouble installing itunes and quick time

When I attempted to install the new version of iTunes the installer gave me the message "there is a problem with this windows installer package. a program required for this install to complete could not be run." I have downloaded the installer several times. I have windows vista home premium 64 bit.

"There is a problem with the windows installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run.
With that one, I'd start by trying the measures from the following polydorus post:

  • Unable to install iTunes, I get an error saying it is unable to create the directory C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\iTunes.Resources\da.lproj\iPodWelcomeOffline.nib

Unable to install iTunes, I get the following error:

That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

  • HELP I cant install itunes 10.5 on Vista

My husband is going to kill me...I was trying to update iTunes so I could update my iPad and I kept getting the same error message, "The installer has insufficient priviledges to modify this file: C\programfile\apple software update\softwareupdate.resources\software update.tiff" So  I stupidly uninstalled iTunes and now it won't reinstall - I get the same error message. I don't know what to do! I attempted to uninstall the Apple Software Update program as well but I kept getting error messages telling me I don't have permission...  I'm about ready to panic.... Our computer has Vista running on it...

Hello Vista People!  It has taken me an entire day to fix the problem that NOT A SINGLE POST clearly answered the issue of "cant install iTunes 10.5" on my vista machine.  Or worse yet, the problem I was getting was a Windows Installer error.  What I discovered was that there was a corrupted Apple Software Update program.  When I did as so many have suggested, and uninstalled all the Apple products, and then reinstalled, and was unable to get a iTunes 10.5 to install.  The key to notice if you have this problem is that when you look in the Control Panel>Programs>Programs and Features, you will notice that Apple Software Update is showing, but there is no "publisher"....there is a file size, about 2.5 mb for me (yours could be different).  And when you right clicked or 'selected' the program in the the "uninstall or change a program" mode in the Control Panel>Programs>Programs and Features you would not get anything to do.  You couldnt uninstall it.  So after uninstalling and reinstalling repeatedly, I noticed that the Apple Software Update simply was not able to be 'changed'.  So, I downloaded from Microsoft "Fixit" the program called:  Microsoftfixit.ProgramInstallUninstall.run.exe  found here:  http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall  I then ran this program and when asked how I wanted it to work, I selected the equivalent of "Let me" make the decisions, (Not the automatic fix) and then selected that I wanted to "Uninstall".  When it finished running, it gave me a list of programs to 'uninstall' and I selected Apple Software Update.  When it completed, I checked the Control Panel>Programs and Apple Software Update was gone.  Once it was gone, I was able to install iTunes 10.5 without a problem, and better yet, I also noticed after the installation, in the Control Panel>Programs Apple Software Update was listed with a Publisher.  Now everything works.  I believe there is some issue with Vista corrupting the Apple Software Update software during the uninstall process and Windows Installer doesn't deal with it correctly.  I hope at least one other person can benefit from this, because NOWHERE did anyone do, suggest or clearly advise on how this was to be done.
