  • [SOLVED] mount command and fstab show different file systems

    I recently setup my /etc/fstab to mount by LABEL.
      LABEL=ArchLinux        /    ext2    rw,noatime,errors=continue    0    0
      LABEL=Data30GB        /data    ext2    rw,noatime            0    0
    When I reboot, these two drives work fine. But I run the "mount" command and it shows:
      /dev/disk/by-uuid/8fac6ab0-3d40-4676-bf30-b23c482b47b9 on / type ext2 (rw,noatime,errors=continue)
      /dev/sdb1 on /data type ext2 (rw,noatime)
    I'm curious, why does mount not list things by how the fstab shows them? By the way, I have other drives labeled and mounted by label and it shows the device (i.e. /dev/sdd1) instead of the LABEL as fstab shows on those as well.
    Anyone know why?

    LABEL= and UUID= aren't something the kernel understands -- they're tags interpreted by blkid that resolve to a device, e.g.:
    $ blkid -lt LABEL=root -o device
    /dev/sda2
    This functionality is provided by util-linux's libblkid, which /bin/mount links against. In other words, that syntax in /etc/fstab is just a convenience feature.

    Hello Robert,
    First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
    Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
    PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • Mac wont mount disk images, and fails to auto detect some usb devices.

    for some reason, all of a sudden, my mac won't mount disks. even disks I know in the past have worked.
    also, it wont auto detect some external devices. especially jump drives and hard drives and audio interfaces. It has to be rebooted with the the devices connected.
    I know its not a hardware problem, because everything runs smooth in windows on this computer.
    I did some extensive cleaning recently, and installed a lot of new stuff, but i don't know what could be causing this.
    any help would be greatly apreciated!

    This USB faq may help.
    An SMC reset may help you mount disks.

  • Disk array configurations with oracle redo logs and flash recovery area.

    Dear Oracle users,
    We are planning to buy the new server for oracle database 10g standard edition. We put oracle database file, redo logs, and flash recovery area on each of disk array. My question is what is the best disk array configuration for redo logs and flash recovery area? RAID 10 or RAID 1? Is that possible we can duplicate Flash recovery area to the other location (such as net work drive) at the same time? Since we only have single disk array controller to connect to the disk arrays, I am try to avoid the single failure that will lose archive logs and daily backup.
    thanks,
    Belinda

    Thank you so much for the suggestion. Could you please let me know the answer for my question of FRA redundancy?

    Hi Jon,
    I saw something similar on SPARC when people used s2 (entire disk on non EFI disks) as ASM devices. The workaround we use is to create a new partition, and start it at cylinder 1. This protects the disk label from being overwritten by ASM.

  • 10.4.9 and mounting disk images.

    Here's what MacFixit says :
    Disk images not mounting [Updated] Several users report an inability mount disk images after applying the Mac OS X 10.4.9 update.
    If you are having a problem where disk images won't mount, try booting in Safe Mode (by holding down the Shift key while starting up), then re-attempting mounting of the disk image.
    This solution is particularly useful for the following scenario: You want to try re-application of the Mac OS X combo updater (a common workaround for issues that occur after an incremental Mac OS X update), but are unable to mount the combo updater disk image.
    Prior to booting in safe mode, however, you can delete the following files:
    * /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache
    * /System/Library/com.apple.kernelcaches
    and re-attempting the mount. These, and other cache files, are automatically deleted when you boot in safe mode, but you can potentially save some time by trying deletion of these files (then logging out and back in) first.
    Another option is to use an alternative tool that can mount disk images, like Mount.app, FlashMount, or Toast Titanium.
    MacFixIt reader Joy Denton is one user who had success with our posted workaround:
    "Just wanted to let you know that I had the issue of Disk Images not mounting. This occurred after installing Mac OS X 10.4.9 from Software Update. Fortunately, I read your post regarding a possible fix by using the Combo Update and used Toast to mount the disk image. Ran the Combo Update and ran AppleJack once again. I am now able to mount disk images. This was an annoying problem to be sure."
    But imho the best advice that can be given about software updates is to always have a clone of your system on another partition or external HD so you can boot on it if anything goes wrong. From an external system you can repair your internal disk, install the Combo update if the incremental one failed, etc.

    John,
    You are missing the flash device which stores the sysimg.
    FLASH: not found
    FLASHDEV: (null)
    Try opening the device and re-seating the flash card reader and flash card, sometimes they can get knocked loose during shipping.
    Otherwise, you will need to contact TAC to get an RMA processed.

  • Mounted Disk Images

    Hope this isn't too dumb a question, but I must admit I've never really fully understood disk images. I suppose my question is: does the icon for the application it represents always have to sit there on my desk top. I ask this based on an experience with Adobe Flash Player. Recently I got the message I needed an update. When I downloaded it I was given instructions that have led to a disk image permanently on my desk top. Yet I'm sure with earlier versions I did not have the Flash Player icon sitting there on my desk top. Is there some way to download things like Adobe Flash Player without having their icon up front staring at me? It seems to me I managed somehow in the past with earlier versions. (I did look through the OS help and on-line with this question before I came here.)
    thanks.
    John

    Think of a disk image (.dmg file) as a CD or DVD.  When you download a .dmg file and open it, it "mounts" to your desktop (the same way when you put a CD or DVD into your computer - it mounts and you can see it on your desktop).
    Install the application either by double-clicking the installer (Adobe Flash is like this) or dragging the application icon to your Applications folder.  Doing either of these installs the application to your internal hard drive.
    Once the install is complete, righ-click (or CTRL-click) the mounted image and "eject" it.  You can then safely DELETE the .dmg file.
    Hope that helps.

  • Problem writing external file to externally mounted disk in Windows

    Folks,
    I've got a puzzling problem with a simple OWB mapping where I'm dumping the contents of a table to an external file.
    Versions are OWB v 11.2.0.2 64-bits on Oracle RDBMS 11.2.0.2 Windows 2007 64-bits Enterprise Server.
    When the external files module is hooked up to a location that points to a local disk and directory on the OWB-server, everything works fine - files are created and written.
    When the external files module is hooked up to a location that points to a mounted disk on another Windows 2007 64-bits Enterprise Server, I get +"Invalid Path for target file, check if connector is deployed correctly".+
    The "File System Location Path" in OWB is set to "N:" (no slashes either way). "Test Connection" reports OK.
    I've given both the Oracle os-user and "Everyone" (for good measure) all rights on the mounted disk, and I can see that the generated package code is using the correct Directory, and the Directory Path is the correct one on the server. The mounted disk (N:) should appear as a local disk to Oracle as far as I can see. I'm able to create and delete files on the disk using command line on the OWB/DB-server.
    I'm scratching my head on this one....

    then mapped that share as a network drive (N:) on server A (the OWB/DB-server)I think that problem was with different accounts used for run Oracle database (usually database instance run under SYSTEM account) and which you used to map share (it was interactive session). Even when you made this map persistent (enable "Reconnect at logon" option during mapping) you don't grant access to this drive to other accounts (including SYSTEM ) - this drive will not be visible to other users.
    I think it is possible to create "persistent" network drive mapping for Oracle database context with specification non-SYSTEM account (domain or server local) for running Oracle database instance (and Oracle Listener service).
    Also it seems there is a workaround to access mapped network drive under SYSTEM account:

  • Does Time Machine still ignore mounted disk images? Specifically, encrypted sparse bundle disk images?

    My Time Machine backs up to Time Capsule which cannot be encrypted. I also have confidential data in an encrypted sparse bundle disk image in my home folder. When TM backs up and the encrypted sparse bundle disk image is mounted and I'm accessing the data, does TM back up the data "in the clear" decrypted form or does it exclude the disk image because it's mounted? I've done a little research, but there's conflicting information. Not sure what happens in Lion now...

    Time Machine does not backup mounted disk images! The encrypted sparse bundle disk image was mounted, I updated a doc and did a TM backup - the file was not listed in the TM repository and the doc remained unchanged in the encrypted sparse bundle disk image on TM. Then I ejected the disk image and did a TM backup - the updated doc was backed up in the encrypted sparse bundle disk image! Thank you!

  • Preview app damage pictures on mounted disk

    I recently upgraded the system to Mavericks and preview app starts to get weird. I have a bunch of pictures (in .tif, jpeg, etc types) on mounted disks and I used to open with preview and it worked perfect. But recently, when I open up a picture file with preview for the first time, it seems ok. But for the second time and onwards, it says the file "is damaged and should be move to trash". I tried thousands of times for all types of pictures, but it's always like that, first time good and second time damaged. However, if I open the same picture with iPhoto in the first time, no matter how many times I tried, it's always working well, no damage was found, so I guess it's the preview app that damages the picture file. Also, this weird thing didn't happen when I open any local pictures. Preview is still always good with the local ones. I didn't come across that before, and didn't find a solution on any websites. Can someone help me here please? Bunch of thx!

    That's a good idea, but actually I just fixed the problem last night by turning on the Gatekeeper in Security to allow apps or files from anywhere can be open on my macbook, then the error went away! Sorry for not marking this question as solved on time, but do appreciate your attention!

  • How to make iMovie 09 recognize a mounted disk image?

    I'm trying to store video clips in a disk image (Mac OS Extended - Journaled, single Apple Partition Map). Previously in iMovie 08 all I had to do was mount the image, start iMovie and it would recognize it as an additional drive. Then I could drag events to it and store them there. In 09 this does not work. It sees the image but has the yellow triangle/exclamation point in it. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to make it recognize the image! I've tried all variations in disk utility to create the image to no avail. Is iMovie 09 looking for a certain file on the disk image to recognize it? Maybe something in the DS_Store file or the .localized? Very frustrating.
    Hoping someone can help. Thanks.

    Try the following:
    Mount the disk image so that there is a disk icon on the Desktop, and then launch Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities).  Copy-paste the following line into the Terminal window, and then type a single space. Do not type <Return> yet:
    sudo mdutil -i on
    After typing the single space, drag the mounted disk image icon from the Desktop into the Terminal window, click inside the Terminal window, and then type <Return>.  Enter your admin password at the prompt (it will not echo on the screen),  and again type <Return>.
    Hopefully that will enable Spotlght indexing on the mounted image. It might take some time to complete depending on the contents.
    The result for this for me, three times, was "Indexing disabled."

  • HT1331 cant see disks in the airport extreme setup

    cant see disks in the airport extreme "partions" to set up, tried different disks, cables, restart, etc, bottom line the extreme does not see any attached external hard drives, any ideas?
    Cheers
    Michael

    Checklist:
    1)  The drive must be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Unless the documentation with your drive specifically states this fact, the drive is very likely pre-formatted for Windows, which will not work on the AirPort Extreme. Use Disk Utility on your Mac to reformat the drive.
    2)  Even if the drive is formatted correctly, the USB port on the Extreme is underpowered....so it is often necessary to use a powered USB hub with the Extreme.....even if your hard drive has its own power supply.
    3)  The hard drive will not "show up" on the desktop the way that drive that is connected directly to the Mac will do. You must click on the AirPort Extreme icon under the SHARED heading in the Finder, then double click the folder representing the drive to mount it on the desktop.
