Cant mount ipod question

My ipod is stuck on the screen with the folder with an exclamation point. I have tried all the options without having to restore it but none work. So i put my ipod into disk mode and connected it to my computer and tried to use the ipod updater to restore it. However all that happens when I do this is I get an error message that says "can't mount ipod". I have no idea what else to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If your iPod appears in Explorer, try changing the drive letter.
Click on start/control panel/admin tools/computer management/disk management/right click on the iPod and select “change drive letter”.
Choose something lower down the alphabet, say “M”, or something similar.
If it's not in Explorer, see this.
Your Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod.

  • Cant Restore ipod mini

My Ipod mini has the folder with an exclamation point icon on it and I have tried all the solutions apple provided and none have worked to solve the problem. So I tried to restore my ipod mini and even that didnt work. I switch my ipod mini into disk mode so that the ipod updater software can recognize it but as soon as the updater software connects to the ipod mini, the ipod then restarts itself and the updater software is no longer connected to the ipod and goves me the error "cant mount ipod". I have tried restoring it several different times on different USB ports several times. I am stumped and have no idea how to solve this problem and help would be appreciated.

If your iPod is recognized in Explorer, close the updater program and try this.
Click on start/control panel/admin tools/computer management/disk management/right click on the iPod and select “change drive letter”.
Choose something lower down the alphabet, say “M”, or something similar.
A drive letter conflict can sometimes cause the 'can't mount iPod' message.
    Then try the restore again.

  • Can`t mount ipod and format error

installed updater 2005-11-17 and itunes6 but my 3rd gen 20gb ipod behaves strange. iPod had been unused for a couple of months following a house move. Ipod SETTINGS>ABOUT says 0 (none!) songs - about 14gb used 5 free. Updater just seems to "hang". Both usb and firewire.
If i start updater and connect iPod i regularly get "cant mount ipod" - but if I connect it and walk away for a while (ipod then appears in my computer as a removable drive) then updater reports ipod details as N/A ( like serial no. - N/A name - N/A format -N/A) then suggests to restore.
After a lengthy period i get "disk format error" (or similar wording.
Disk Mode also unhelpful as is Drive Letter change.
Have tried all on iPod 101.
Only solution appears to be hooking upto a mac which i dont have !
Surely I can format with some other software on a PC.
Why does it take so long for Updater to do something.
Updates BOTH my daughters 4gb Minis in a flash !
Same responce on 3 different PCs !
    Any Advice ?

If windows can see the iPod check what drive letter it has allocated to the iPod and make sure it is sensible and does not clash with any other drive (i.e. not A: - C:, not a drive letter used by another device or a mapped network drive). Try using a free letter such as I:
If windows does not see the iPod (even in disk mode) then try uninstalling and reinstalling the iPod software.

  • "can't mount iPOD" - unable to restore

    Hi,
I would greatly appreciate any advise on the following problem...
My iPOD froze, so I conducted a reset. After the reset the screen displayed an exclamation point and folder icon. After reading the support guidelines on the site I tried the following:
I put my iPOD in disk mode, and fully charged it up (however note that although I have had my iPOD for 14 months the battery still lasts for around 6 - 8 hours).
I ran my version of iPOD updater on my pc which stated "iPOD not readable - needs to be reformatted for use on PC". The only option available to select was the restore option which I tried and the following message was displayed "Can't mount iPOD".
I thought that this message may be because my version of updater and iTunes were old. Therefore, I installed the latest versions - 2005 -11-17 and v6 respectively. However, on trying to run the newer updater again I can't see my iPOD in iTunes, my computer / desktop etc. now even when in disk mode.
Eventually the message "can't mount iPOD" is displayed.
Any idea's on what to try would be great.
    Many thanks
    John

Alright. Let me start off by saying that my iPod issue is resolved. However, before I get to the solution, let me answer other questions raised since my last post.
I did try using a different USB port. I even tried my pc at work and it had the same results. Now, for how I resolved it.
After the last post, my iPod deteriorated to the point that it stopped working altogether. When resetting it, it would just come up with the Apple icon and then turn off. Without getting into all the details, I deduced that it was a bad battery. I invested $25.95 into a DIY battery kit. It was a bit dicey performing surgery on my beloved iPod, but with only minor scarring, I now have a fully functional iPod that syncs with iTunes and functions like new.
I'm not saying all "unable to mount iPod" problems are caused by bad batteries, but it could be one of the causes. Coincidentally, my problems started 16 months after starting to use my iPod. That roughly translates to 400+ charge cycles. That's when Apple says the battery performance will begin to deteriorate. I just wish Apple's SW would have some sort of diagnostics that's more accurate. I got the folder w/ the exclamation point, sad iPod and battery icon pictures before figuring out that I needed a new battery!

  • THIS IS REALLY ANNOYING, THIS IS MY 3RD POST.BEEN 6 MONTHS.CANT FIX IPOD :(

I have a 2Gb nano, one of the older ones. and i get the folder icon with the exclamation mark next to it.
tried to restore and update with itunes - it takes a while to restore it, then tells me that its reseting the ipod and it should appear in itunes soon. it does appear in itunes but the same warning pops up telling me that it is corrupted again and needs to be restored.
i click restore and this time itunes tells me it cant restore it because it was unable to download the sufficient software needed. the exact error message is:
"There was a problem downloading the ipod software for the ipod "ipod". The requested resource was not found."
whats going on? this is a continuous circle. i tried to format the F drive in 'my computer' but nothing happens.
i am using the most recent version on itunes and the latest version of iPod firmware.
i have tried Chkdsk on my ipod with no result.
i have also tried formatting and Chkdsk in disk mode with no result.
i have tried ipod updater on my other computer and apparently it cannot 'mount' ipod.
i have gone to computer managment but it's saying my ipod is 'unreadable' and wont let me do anything with it. the same thing happens when i try to format it in my computer, it doesnt allow it.
can someone help me? i would really appreciate it as I have been trying for weeks, no MONTHS, to get this fixed. THANKYOU XXXX XXX XXX
ps. i live in the uk, is there anywhere i can send my ipod away to get fixed?

  • Can't mount ipod

my ipod's a year and a half old. he never gave me any real problems until a month and a half ago, and that was just freezing until the battery died. it was fine from that point on until last night, when it just randomly died while i was playing it through my car's stero. i let the battery drain itself again this time, and now i'm just getting a parade of screens that show the apple icon, the file folder icon, and -- when i tried restoring the ipod through my computer -- the "do not disconnect screen."
i tried restoring my ipod with the ipod updater, and all it's saying is "can't mount ipod." i don't know what that means and i don't know what to do about it. can anyone point me in the right direction? thanks. xoxo

    Hi there-
For "can't mount iPod" there are usually 2 things you can do to take care of it.
First, try changing the iPod's drive letter. This article explains how to do that:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93499
    Then try to restore again.
If that doesn't work, go through the steps in this article, restart the computer when prompted to do so, and then try the restore again:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302538
This ought to allow you to restore your iPod.
Feel free to post back if you have any more problems or questions.
    Best wishes,
    CG

  • Brand New IPod Mini - Can't mount iPod from IPod Updater

Just bought a brand new IPOD mini. When I try to use the IPod Updater, I get an error message "Can't mount iPod".
Windows XP Services shows IPOD services is started.
The IPOD appears in My computer as "Removalable Disk".
Also, my IPOD does not appear in iTunes.

This is a very reasonable strategy. It has been previously used for USB problems with battery charging.
See this link: The iPod Battery Unplugged..
A synopsis of it is as follows:
"For best results, try not to use computer ports to charge your iPod. USB is especially sensitive to how many devices are on it and what the resulting bus voltage is. It may even display the charging icon but not be adding much to the battery. USB versions prior to 2.0 will not charge your iPod (and probably be too slow for its other functions). Even USB 2.0 is limited to 700 milliamps and an iPod "likes" to see one full amp for charging, plus some to spin the HD while mounted. Some (early) iPod models will not charge from USB, period. Some PCs use 4-pin Firewire cables (all Macs are 6-pin) which carry no charging voltage, so they won't work at all for recharging and can allow your iPod to run down and cause serious problems while updating firmware, restoring, or loading songs. Both USB and Firewire require the iPod to be mounted by your computer as an external drive, which means the iPod's HD is spinning, using some of the juice that the battery might like to have. And if the computer sleeps or is turned off, the battery won't charge and in some cases will actually drain through the port circuits. Bottom line: if your ports are not doing a good job of charging your battery, use the wall adapter to charge for several cycles before questioning the battery's credentials. If you have a new iPod which only comes with USB, don't panic; it can work fine. But if you do experience problems, either take everything else off the USB bus (except mouse & keyboard) and/or get an AC adapter."

  • Cant mount /dev/sda2 /mnt

    hello,everybody
        I'm a beginner
I want to install ArchLinux in my Dell notebook ,the sda1 had installed window xp,i want to make a dual system .
I burn a Arch Linux ISO cd and enter the live system, then the questions are coming....
After partitioning the drive by cfdisk tool,i cant mount the sda2 on the /mnt
the error code list this :
SQUASHFS error: Cant find  a SQUASHFS superblock on sda2
            EXT4-fs(sda2)     : cant find ext4 filesystem
What's meaning ? I have partition the drive like this .Please other Linuxer help me  or tell me how to solve this problem
                               cfdisk
    name    flags    partType    fsType    size(MB)
    sda1                  Primary     ntfs         30000
    sda2     Boot      Primary     Linux       100
    sda3                   Primary     Linux       10000
    sda5                   Logical    Linux swap  2000
    sda6                   Logical      Linux        70000

After you partitioned the drive, did you put filesystems on the partitions? Follow the steps in the Beginners' Guide, and use mkfs to put filesystems on the partitions. If sda2 is your boot partition, it's not the partition you want to mount at /mnt (you should mount your root partition there). Read the Guide.

  • IPod Updater software "cannot mount ipod"

Hmm.. ok so a couple months back my iPod just took a crap on me. I hook it up to my pc and get the apple logo then the whole folder w/ !. Then it goes into the "do not disconnect" thing but then it resets on a continuous cycle. I've tried to hook it up to the updater and restore it but the updater says it cannot mount ipod. So... my question is, do I have to send this thing in to be repaired, and will they even do it?
    Thank you,
    Justin

I finally called Apple. After going through everything the website says to do with the service tech, she recommended I take the ipod to an Apple Store or send it in for service. I went to the Apple Store today, and the tech there said that something was physically wrong with the drive. Since mine was still under warranty he gave me a new one.
Sorry that I didn't have a better answer

  • Ipod wont turn on (file !), "can't mount ipod", disk goes spin, stop, spin,

Hello everyone. HELP! Major problems with the ipod, 4th generation, click-wheel, non color screen. It will not turn on fully. You here the disk spin, then stop, then start spinning over and over and you see a file with ! next to it. It will restart and it does the same thing. I have tried many times. It is formated to PC and is usually used with windows. But when it is plugged in, the computer and ipod updater do not recognize it, it tries and it says "can't mount ipod". I have tried switching to disk mode, which seems to work, but then in restarts in a few seconds and goes back to the file! and the spinning. I have tried all this on the mac also, thinking if the mac recognizes it, I can just restore it and go from there. No luck. I have tried the disk utility, which does not recogize that the ipod is present either. Please help! I've searched the posts many times and nothing answers my questions. The ipod is just over a year old, so I doubt apple would replace it. Went to the store today in London and the line was hours long and you cannot make an appointment online because they are so busy! eeks.

I don't know if it is a permanent fix, I saw that someone asked an apple employee about it and he said if anything, it is a temporary fix. However, I had the same problem about 7 days ago, dropped it, and the ipod worked perfectly. Just today it was up to its old antics again, except this time with the sad icon instead of the !folder, and instead of wasting any time I dropped it once again and it now works perfectly. So maybe ipods just need to be dropped every once in a while.

  • I cant  see ipod nano on itunes,

I cant see Ipod Nano (6th gen) on itunes windows vista operating system.
    Jim

first of all, no one is going to respond to this becuase limewire is used basically in your situation illegally. But let's say you import a cd, left click on the songs you imported and hit get album artwork, if nothing comes up, the album sn't in the itunes database, get it online. And I suggest never to mention limewire and music files on the same post here, since limewire is a file sharing program. Use Itunes, it's easier. theo

Looks like the iPod Hardisk is having problem.
Can you do the iPod Disk Diagnostics as posted by tt2, it wont fix your problem but helps in troubleshooting.
You system check maybe above but dont  go for Auto, select the Manual test, as tt2 described in his detailed post.
