Cant mount /var at boot

I am experiencing problem with our v480 server, as ocasionally it fails to boot and gives cant mount /var error and goes into single user mode. (Log file is attached below). Once this happens, it doesnt come back into runlevel 3 until it is completely powered off and on.
I fixed the (ufs log for / changed state to Error ) message by removing the patch 113073-14 and making / as nologging in /etc/vfstab file. But the problem with not mounting /var still comes up. I am attaching the log file below with the ufslog error message included (which doesnt show up after patch removal).
I am looking for any suggestions or hints, what would be causing this. Thanks a lot.

This error doesnt occur in all boots, but once it occurs , we have to power off the machine and power back on and machine boots normally into run level 3 without this /var error. otherwise a simple reboot doesnt help and we get the same error.

  • Can't mount /var/lock at boot time [SOLVED]

I set up my fstab to mount /tmp /var/run and /var/lock to tmpfs. When I boot my computer /var/lock does not mount correctly. If I use mount -a after boot it mounts. How can I fix this?
Last edited by namelessone (2010-12-05 01:49:30)

dmesg doesn't show anything out of the ordinary. During boot I get the message along the lines of "failed to mount /var/lock" (it goes by really fast so I don't remember the exact wording)
    fstab says:
    tmpfs /var/lock tmpfs defaults,nodev,nosuid,noexec,mode=1777,size=10m 0 0
    tmpfs /var/run tmpfs defaults,nodev,nosuid,noexec,mode=0755,size=10m 0 0

  • Cant mount /dev/sda2 /mnt

    hello,everybody
        I'm a beginner
I want to install ArchLinux in my Dell notebook ,the sda1 had installed window xp,i want to make a dual system .
I burn a Arch Linux ISO cd and enter the live system, then the questions are coming....
After partitioning the drive by cfdisk tool,i cant mount the sda2 on the /mnt
the error code list this :
SQUASHFS error: Cant find  a SQUASHFS superblock on sda2
            EXT4-fs(sda2)     : cant find ext4 filesystem
What's meaning ? I have partition the drive like this .Please other Linuxer help me  or tell me how to solve this problem
                               cfdisk
    name    flags    partType    fsType    size(MB)
    sda1                  Primary     ntfs         30000
    sda2     Boot      Primary     Linux       100
    sda3                   Primary     Linux       10000
    sda5                   Logical    Linux swap  2000
    sda6                   Logical      Linux        70000

After you partitioned the drive, did you put filesystems on the partitions? Follow the steps in the Beginners' Guide, and use mkfs to put filesystems on the partitions. If sda2 is your boot partition, it's not the partition you want to mount at /mnt (you should mount your root partition there). Read the Guide.

  • Cant mount ntfs drive in os x 10.8.4

I've tried with several drives and bought software but still cant mount a pc hdd.
    Needed strongly to work.

NTFS is a windows format, not Mac.  You will have to reformat it to ExFat on a PC or use software such as this:
    http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/
    Ciao.
Note that these are recommendations for use as an external HDD.

  • /var/log/boot analog for shutdown

    Hello.
I have some troubles with own rc.d scripts, which prevent my system from shutting down.
Unfortunately, when I'm trying to run these scripts manually via /etc/rc.d/script stop, they work fine. But on system shutdown server freezes, after killing sshd and I can't even debug that situation.
So, my question is: how to create something like /var/log/boot only for shutdown sequence?
I know, it is not trivial, because there is no place to store that log after unmounting fs, but it would be nice to have that log at least up to the fs unmounting.

Thank you for your welcome and for your answers

  • Cant mount CDROM

Hi, i was surprised when i figured out that i cannont mount my cdrom.
I have 2 DVD trays. I cant mount cd's in one of them. But in the other i get this:
    org.freedesktop.hal.storage.mount-removable no <-- (action, result).
I did some chmod there and i got this error:
(exo-mount:5520): Gtk-WARNING **: Imposible encontrar el motor de temas en la ruta al _modulo: «ubuntulooks»,
(exo-mount:5520): Gtk-WARNING **: Imposible encontrar el motor de temas en la ruta al _modulo: «crux-engine»,
    org.freedesktop.hal.storage.mount-removable no <-- (action, result)
For the one who doesnt speak spanish, the traslation will be:
(exo-mount:5520): Gtk-WARNING **: Cannot find theme at al _module: «ubuntulooks»,
(exo-mount:5520): Gtk-WARNING **: Cannot find theme at al _module: «crux-engine»,
    org.freedesktop.hal.storage.mount-removable no <-- (action, result)
I googled this, but all that i found was "chmod a+rwx /dev/cdrom0.. " and things like that, but still dont work

    http://forums.opensuse.org/archives/sls … ost1801686
You could also try with http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=26195 which does the job without the whole policykit mess.

  • Since 4.4.4 SDCard Filesystem not mounted properly on boot but ok on remount

Since i got 4.4.4, my SDCard filesystem in not mounted properly on boot. Any directories with accents in the directory name (é, à, è for exemple) will show asian characters instead.
Those directory are not usuable (shows as 0k files).
If i go into storage and i unmount the sdcard and remount it (without removing it or anything else) then it gets mounted properly and my accents are back and i can browse in the folders.
I used "mount" to get the output of what was mounted and how and i noticed some slight difference in the sdcard mounting before and after... here they are :
    Before:
    /dev/block/vold/179:65 /mnt/media_rw/sdcard1 vfat rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime,fmask=0000,dmask=0000,allow_utime=0022,codepage=cp437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,errors=remount-ro 0 0
    After:
    /dev/block/vold/179:65 /mnt/media_rw/sdcard1 vfat rw,dirsync,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime,uid=1023,gid=1023,fmask=0007,dmask=0007,allow_utime=0020,codepage=cp437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,utf8,errors=remount-ro 0 0
Since i have a workaround (simply remounting the card whenever i reboot the phone), it's not too bad, but i do think it should mount properly and be usable on boot. I would consider this a bug.
Here is an example of the behavior, with some audio books. You can see, for exemple, "I - Harry Potter à l'école des sorcier" comes out with weird chars... there are two instances of what should read as "Pièce Radio", one of what should read as "Émissions" and one that should read as "Hallucinées"

  • Why is /var/log/boot empty

I have several Arch boxes and all but one logs to /var/log/boot which puzzles me.  What would be a cause of a zero-byte /var/log/boot?

    Hi all,
my /var/log/boot file is obviously outdated, last entry is saying 'Wed Feb  8 22:03:57 2012...'. As far as I remember I didn't touch system configuration, so I must have missed something. Can anyone give me a short hint how to reanimate bootlogd?

It should still start. The man page of bootlogd mentions a possible cause, but I'm too much of a linux noob to understand what it says:
    BUGS
Bootlogd  works  by  redirecting  the  console  output from the console
device.  (Consequently bootlogd requires PTY support in the kernel con‐
figuration.)  It copies that output to the real console device and to a
log file.  There is no standard way of ascertaining  the  real  console
           device  if  you have a new-style /dev/console device (major 5, minor 1)
so bootlogd parses the kernel  command  line  looking  for  console=...
lines and deduces the real console device from that.  If that syntax is
ever changed by the kernel, or a console type  is  used  that  bootlogd
does not know about then bootlogd will not work.

  • Mount /var as a ramdisk?

Hi, I'm going to install arch onto a compact flash card. To minimize writes to the card am I going to link /tmp to /var/tmp and create a ramdisk at boot for /var to be mounted in.
Do I have to recreate the /var file system in the boot process somehow or will this be created automatically?
Is there anything else I should think about?
    Thanks!

Concerning pacman, looking at the manpage ,it's seems possible to chose where is stored the database:
    CONFIG: OPTIONS
    DBPath = path/to/db/dir
Overrides the default location of the toplevel database direc-
    tory. The default is var/lib/pacman.
. But ialso thinks it will be hard to put the entire /var into a ramdisk.

  • Cant find Mac OS boot after win 8.1 update.

    Hi there,
Ive had a look around the net for a possible solution but no luck so far.
I recently installed Win 8.1 on a partition. My Macbook pro is a model A1398.
I was trying to create a shared partition. From Mac OS I made the new shared partition ex-FAT. I went into Win 8.1 reformatted it (cant remember if I left it at ex-FAT). In the process of restarting Win 8.1 was nice enough to download some updates and restarted itself.
From then on it doesnt see the Mac OS boot any more. Doesnt even boot into Windows! It has start up errors. I tried the command + R option and I cant do the following either:
    1. I cant seem to do anything useful (unless Im missing something) with Disk Utility. Diagnostics show that the Mac OS X install is fine.
    2. Cant re-install because it cant see any boot disk options to select from.
Right now Im screwed. Cant do anything with my "fancy pants" macbook pro. Any help would me much appreciated!
    Cheers.

Had to revert to wiping everything out and starting from scratch. Didnt have a back up so thats the only way. Set the partition to GUID and Mac OS journalled.
Command + Option + P + R and then set it all to just one partition. Then re-install mac OS.
If the above start up option didnt work, try the command R then try the above option again.
    Hoe this helps someone.

  • Cant mount .dmg file - gets error -4960

Ive downloaded Xcode 3.0 over wireless and had to do this in several "sessions" due to the large file size (approx 1.31 GB)
this downloading has taken hours and now for all my hard work in trying to get it - Im getting a -4960 error code when trying to mount this disk.
I searched ADF to see if a related problem has occured but if found no obvious hits.
Anyone else overcome this one ? I surely would love to avoid having to DL this bad boy again....

after plug in it again to my laptop i saw only the fat32 partition on my external drive. (the external harddisc is formatted with a 40 gbyte fat and a 120 gbyte ext3 partition). the ext3 partition had gone away! i think, windows deletet it!
    with mount -t vfat /dev/sdb5 /mnt/temp i can mount the fat32 partiton
    with
    mount -t ext3 /dev/sdb1 /mnt/linux it says:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1,
or too many mounted file systems
i tried many things. i put it back to my win2k machine an try ontrack software, partition magic and so on, nothing works. i also try testdisk and other programs for linux, nothing again.
i tried dd and made a complete image of my partition with dd if=/dev/sdb1 of=/mnt/temp/image.dd, but mount -o loop,ro image.dd /mnt/test only says something with bad superblock.
    cfdisk /dev/sdb says
    sdb1        Boot        Primary   Linux                           115153.92
    sdb5                    Logical   W95 FAT32                        44885.36
    ls -la /dev/sdb tells me:
    lr-xr-xr-x  1 root root 33 Apr 27 01:01 /dev/sdb -> scsi/host3/bus0/target0/lun0/disc
i dont know what to do now? is there anyway to write back the partition table or the superblock? are there any tools do get my data back out of the dd- image?
it would be very nice if somebody help me.
    im finished, HELP!
    andieh

It could be a corrupted superblock.  Did you try an fsck?  If it doesn't work you can try to do another fsck using a backup superblock, see the -b option on the e2fsck man page for help.

then recently i can not connect my mac mini to my TC.

    Mac running 10.4.11
    Problem
View: Finder: in finder select network, then select the TC asks me to confirm password, the a new window with select which volumes to mount TC displayed in list Click OK , then just spinning wheel for ever, the longest i have left this is 11 days nothing, the is disk noise from TC at the start of the attempt, TC can still be accessed by other machines.
    any suggestions would be welcome

    Hi j1s,
On this noise, can ou explain further?
So, other machines can access those volumes?
Have you tried making a new User to see if they have the same problem on tha Mac?
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
