Cant open certain links .swf, word documents

Hi there,
We are developing a site and having problems with opening
links to swf and MS word mail merge documents but only on certain
machines. Some machines work fine others dont.
When you go to open these links it attempts to open the file
then closes it after a split second with out displaying anything
and doent display any error messages. The links are coded to open
in new window. Pop up blockers are disabled and we are running IE 6
and win XP.
As I say on some machines it works fine but on others it
doesnt, any suggestions???
Is it anything to do with activeX?
Please HELP????

Here is a post that I assembled for a similar question:
Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta.  Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion).  While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
    Workarounds:
    1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;
    2.  If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between your PowerPC software or Lion/Mt. Lion;
    3.  Upgrade your software to Intel compatible versions, or find alternative software that will open your data files;
    3.  Install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels:
Full Snow Leopard installation instructions here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439
NOTE: STEP ONE of the instructions must currently be completed on a Snow Leopard or Lion Mac and the resulting modified Snow Leopard.cdr install file can then be moved over to your Mountain Lion Mac for completion of the remaining steps.
NOTE 2:  Computer games with complex, 3D or fast motion graphics make not work well or at all in virtualization.

  • External Link to Word document question

    Hello, fellow RoboHelpers!
I have a quick question that I am hoping someone can answer
    for me. :-)
I am using RoboHelp X5 and use Microsoft HTML Help (.CHM) as
my file output. I would like to link a Word document to one of my
topics, so when a user clicks the link, they will be prompted to
    open/save the Word document.
The following are the steps I use to do this:
    1) I type the text that I want the to use for the hyperlink,
highlight it, and select the Hyperlink tool (or press CTRL+K).
    2) In the Hyperlink dialog box, I select "File" from the
"Link To:" section and select my Word document.
    3) I select "Yes" to add the Word document to my project
    folder.
    4) In the Hyperlink diaglog box, I select OK, and the link
    has been created.
    5) I generate my Help project and test the link.
    6) When I click the hyperlink, I receive a "File Download -
Security Warning" box asking me if I want to Open or Save the Word
    document.
Problem #1 -- it appears that I can save the Word document by
clicking "Save" without any problems, but clicking "Open" does not
open the Word document in Microsoft Word. Why?
Problem #2 -- The warning box displays three criteria: the
file name, what type of file it is, and "From". I have issues with
the "From" line. While the .CHM file is attempting to call the Word
document from within the .CHM file, which is what I expected it to
do ... the path is, well, ugly looking :-P
    mk:@MSITStore:C:\Program%20Files\RoboHelp%20Office\
    RoboHTML\HTMLMicrosoftHTML\VRHelp.chm::/ICBA.doc
Is there any way that I can clean up this path? If I could at
least get rid of that mk:@MSITStore, that would be a good start.
If anyone has some suggestions, I am all for it!
    Thank you very much,
    --Jessica

The "mk:@MSITStore:" is the protocol for extracting from a
.chm file, much like an "http:" precedes a web address. I'm afraid
that just is part of the path if the Word document is embedded in
    the help file.
Ahh, I am sorry to hear that that is the case. Thanks for the
    information!

RHX5 does this automatically with your steps as I use an older
    version.
    John
Yes, the Word document is added as a baggage file. If I click
"Open", the Security Warning box disappears and nothing happens
    (unfortunately).
In the Hyperlink properties, I realized that I had the link
opening in the "same window", so I changed it to display in a "New
Window". Now, when I generate/click the link, the Word document
tries to open in Internet Explorer (path and all). I get the same
message box as before asking me if I want to Open or Save the
document. Still, clicking "Open" will not open the Word document in
Microsoft Word. When I press Open, the box simply disappears and
the path remains in the Internet Explorer address bar. If I select
the path in the message bar and press Enter to bring up the
Open/Save prompt again, I can save the document ... but I cannot
    Open it.
A thought just occurred to me while I was typing this: Would
the fact that I am using Microsoft Word 2007 have anything to do
with why the file will not open? I remember hearing that Office
2007 is not compatible with RoboHelpX5, so perhaps that is why the
document is not opening. Still, RoboHelpX5 doesn't seem to have a
problem saving the file to your harddrive regardless of the
filetype, and the Word document I am working with is a .doc file
anyway, compatible with Word 97-2003, not a .docx.

From time to time people ask how to open a Word document from
    the help.
COMPILED CHM HELP - Rick advises that you can use an HTML
Help Shortcut control to accomplish the goal.
You simply specify the file name where you would normally
    specify the application.
I tried to create a HTML Help shortcut by doing the
    following:
    1. I click the Insert Navigation Control button, then HTML
    Help Controls > Shortcut
    2. In the Button options box, I enter a text description for
    the button and click Next.
    3. In the Shortcut Selection, the first prompt says, "Program
to run when shortcut is activated." I search for my Word document
from within my Project Folder, select it, and press Next.
    4. I leave the Font options the way they are.
    5. I click Finish, and the button is created.
When I generate the project and test the button, nothing
happens when I click it. If I do specify the application (ex.
    WINWORD.EXE), Word
does open when I click the button. How can I get it to call
    a specific Word document?
    Thanks for your time, guys!

  • Links in Word Documents to SharePoint documents

Our SharePoint site contains Word documents with links to other documents stored in SharePoint.
When the users open a Word document stored in SharePoint, and then create a link, the users select the files in the "Current Folder" which is the SharePoint Network Drive.  In this case the path is
    \\rcssportal.co.riverside.ca.us\DavWWWRoot\sites\teammate\
When users then open the Word document, and select a link, they receive a "Cannot open the specified file" pop up.
If users do one of the following though, after being authenticated all the links will start working:
    1. In the document library, select "Open with Explorer"
    2. Map a Network Drive to
    \\rcssportal.co.riverside.ca.us\DavWWWRoot\sites\teammate\

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you wanted to link in Word Documents to SharePoint documents.
I try to reproduce the issue, however, I can open the Linked Word Document in the SharePoint Network Drive.
Please make sure you create Network Drive correctly. For more information, you can refer to:
Using SharePoint Document Library as a Network Drive
If the issues still exist, I recommend to select "Open with Explorer" to open the document.

I don't know what file formats LibreOffice supports, but my guess is it can only handle the OpenXML format (new Office docs).

  • Linking a Word Document

    Hi Guys,
Apologies if this is really stupid question, but I'm having problems I can't sort out.  I am trying to educate project managers who report in MS Word and store data in MS Excel - because they like colours and can manipulate simple Excel features.
My intermediate solution was to interrogate the Excel data in Crystal Reports ver 10 (or BusinessObjects Enterprise XI) and link the basic report, a Word document (as the report header). The idea being that project managers could update the Word document and continue to use Excel - and Crystal would tidily put the two together.
However - no probs with Excel data but if I link the Word document into the header (or any other report section) I get ony the first table of the document!  The Word document is a series of tables one of which spans several pages, with the tables formatted to allow rows to split over a page break.  I can link the individual tables - but the version produced always stops at a page break.
All ideas very gratefully received - either to solve my problem or suggest a better way of working completely.

Only the 1st page will be displayed. This is by design. For possible work-arounds see the following KBases:

Uhhhhh... Thank GOD... Got all of my files.
Spent some time on the phone with Apple Care... who was great to deal with but actually... not as helpful as I was hoping. It was suggested that I try DiskWarrior 4 to try to recover the files. $108 later, I had no files.
More calls with Apple Care and they were pretty sure that everything was gone since once the External drive was installed, like a moron, I let TimeMachine go ahead and back up my new MacBook... so it overwrote who knows how many gig that was my entire MacBook.
I wasn't giving up so I called Maxtor, the manufacturer of the external drive itself. They suggested file recovery software from I365... which is also a Seagate company (the makers of the drive). The suggested I simply use their demo because the demo version would find the files. If it found them, I could buy the software to restore them.
It found them! Another $129 after and I was able to restore all of them back to my old PC laptop.
NOW, I just need to figure out how to get the 50gig of HD video files off of my old laptop now and into my Mac and IMovie so I can actually make some DVDs out of them!
I get that Macs and PCs are different formats but I think it is ridiculous that formatting still means basically just wiping out or at least treating massive lots of old data as if it isn't there. There's gotta be a better way to do that.

  • Problems linking to Word document

I wrote this as a reply to a similar post last week but I'm
afraid it got buried in the thread...part of Rick's response to
that poster was: "2. If you are linking to Word or .PDF documents,
there is a slight chance you will find the link actually fails for
some reason. Yet, if you simply place focus in the address bar of
your browser and press Enter to refresh, the document loads right
up. Go figure. If that begins happening, let us know and there is a
    possible workaround for you."
That is the problem I'm having--can you share the workaround
you mention? It happens most--but not all--of the time, and only
with the Word documents; my PDFs and web links open with no
problem. The documents are housed on a public website. I am using
    Captivate 3 if that matters.
Thank you for any help you can offer!
    Julie

    Hi Julie
    Here's how it's done.
    From inside Captivate 3, click File > Record/Create >
    MenuBuilder Project.
Choose the Blank Project type and click OK.
    Click Options > Project Options...
Configure the width and height to the smallest possible
values. This will be 320 wide and 200 tall.
    Click OK.
    Click Insert > Clickbox.
Type the file name of the Word document or PDF and ensure you
click to place a check mark in the "Save file with project" check
    box.
Click OK and you should see a dialog asking if you want to
browse for the file. Click No.
Size the Clickbox so it covers the entire project area.
    Click File > Export.
Save the project using any name you like. I frequently do
this and just use "Untitled" as that's what it suggests.
Choose Flash Movie as the type of project and click Next
    >.
Type a name to identify the .SWF and choose an easy to
remember location. I often use the Desktop.
    Click Finish.
Close MenuBuilder. You are finished with that (unless you
wish to create more of these)
In Captivate on the slide where you want the user to click to
open the document or PDF, click Insert > Animation.
Browse to the location where you exported the Menubuilder
    file and select it.
What you are doing is creating a MenuBuilder output to drop
into a Captivate project to open files. I'm not sure why or how
it's different than the way Captivate works, but different it is.
Hopefully this helps you out... Rick

    hello forum members,
we having issues opening a word document in a Project Server 2013 . we have Office 2010 on our computers installed.
when I click on a document link, i get a message "The webpage cannot be displayed".  the only way to open a document is to right click on link and select "Open".
Does Project Server 2013 require Office 2013 installed? If not, is there a way to open documents in Project Server 2013 without right clicking on links?

    tatiana

    Hi Tatiana,
This is the know issue. I have experienced this issue with one of our client. The cause of issue as below -
    Scenario
You have 2007 Microsoft Office installed on a computer.
On the same computer, you also have a Microsoft Office 2013 application installed, such as Microsoft Lync 2013 or Microsoft Word 2013.
    SOLUTION
To work around this issue, remove the Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Support program component from the Office 2013
installation on the affected computer or computers. To do this, follow the “Install or remove individual Office program components” section of the following Microsoft Office website:
    Install or remove individual Office
    programs and components
    (http://office.microsoft.com/redir/HA010354261.aspx)
After you complete these steps, repair 2007 Office. For more information about how to repair the installation, click
the following article number to go to the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

How to install the individual 2007 Office features or to repair the installed 2007 Office programs
    Note When
you follow these steps, set the Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Support
component within Office Tools to Not Available.
This solution doesn't apply to scenarios in which SharePoint Designer 2013 is installed on the affected computer.
You can find further details here at Microsoft support site -
