Cant open file directly on default program

hi!
I´m trying to open a .RVT file in a program called Revit, wich is the default program for those files, and now its not working, it says the default program is Revit, but when I try to open the file it opens revit, not the file in revit, so I´ve got to go
to open/file...etc... and after a while it gets hard finding every file...
can you tell me what do I do, I´m assuming I will have to go to *reddit* but after that I dont know...
thanks!!!

Hi,
S.Sengupta's suggestion is worth a try. Also you could try to reset the default program for test:
Change the program that opens a type of file

    Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen!
My question concerns the impossibility to open RAW-files directly from the program Adobe Bridge. At the moment when you open a RAW-file from Adobe Bridge by double-clicking, RAW-file is opened only in Photoshop. In the settings Adobe Bridge - in "open RAW-files by double-clicking in Adobe Camera Raw» box is checked. When you try any changes in the settings Adobe Bridge system displays a message:
Bridge's parent application is not active. Bridge requires that a qualifying product has been launched at least once to enable this feature.
The entire line of Adobe products on my computer updated to the latest updates. Previously, a family of products Adobe Photoshop on your computer is not set. Computer - PC, Windows 7 Enterprises.

  • "Open with" or "choose default program ..." Context menu broken.

    Hi,
I have what appears to be a Context menu handler issue with my Windows 7 Home Premium - 64Bit.
I just discovered that if I right-click a file ( .txt , .avi , etc), and attempt to use "Open With", I do get a previously used list of programs to select from in the drop down list that appears. However, if I then select the "choose default program ..." dialog box, to find an alternative program to use, I keep ending up with the error message:
"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default programs control panel ."
I tried re-booting without success. Looked at system restore and (STUPIDLY), I only had 2 very recent restore points to go back to, (I've since increased the restore storage allowance for the drives). Restore doesn't take me back to a usable state for this issue.
The default file types doesn't seem to be the problem, as all my files do have default programs associated with them. I can even select one of the alternatives from the right-click pop-up option menu, and the file open appropriately. I can also open and use the Default Program application via Control Panel.
The error message comes up as soon as I click on "choose default program...", from the bottom of the pop-up menu. It's as though that dialog isn't associated with the "Open with'' application anymore.
When I can get to the "Open with" application through other means, ..... the "Always use...." is greyed out, so it becomes a permanent selection / rather than temporary. I know I can sort a work-around out to re-select a default program, in a round-about way, ... but I'd just love to sort whatever has gone wrong with the right click context menu.
Whilst browsing around, I came accross this (but for Windows XP):
Clicking the "Open With" or "Choose Program..." option always opens the file with Notepad?
Note the second suggested error message. It's almost exactly what I'm getting in Win 7.
XP: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel."
Win 7 (my error message): "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default programs controll panel."
Might I be on the right track, by any chance? Could this Registry key have become corrupted? Here's what I found...........
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Unknown\shell\openas\command
Then double clicked default, and here is the value data for (Default):
    %SystemRoot%\system32\rundll32.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,OpenAs_RunDLL %1
If it's not this key, then I feel sure it's a Context menu handler that's become corrupted, for "Open with'' somewhere. I'm hoping someone might point me in the right direction. I'm reasonably confident in backing up / exporting and saving Registry keys - just not knowledgeable enough to know where to root around and know what should or shouldn't be there.
Apologies if this ends up in the wrong forum.
    Any help much appreciated thanks.
    :O)

I had the same issue and the problem was one missing registry key:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Unknown\shell\opendlg\command
    opendlg instead of openas
    The default value is
    %SystemRoot%\system32\rundll32.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,OpenAs_RunDLL %1
I exported the value from a pc that was working fine with the same system Windows 7 64 ultimate and this is the registry file that I exported from the pc witouth the problem  and imported in the pc with the problem to solve the problem:

  • Can't open files directly from file server (MAVERICKS)

since updating to Mavericks earlier today i have had the below problem
I use a file server at work to access all my work files. i have no problem accessing the servers but when i try and when I double click to open a file (excel, word, pdf, etc) it says "the application cant be found"
when Ihave the application open and i open the same file from within the application (file > open) it works fine. I just cannot open files directly from the file server by double clicking.
in previous versions there have been no problems with this,
    any help would be great,

Same issue here; I hadn't related it to upgrading to the latest OS 10.9.2. I've shutdown and restared multiple times. I've also rebuilt permissions on my hard drive as I thought it was the Finder but files on my local HD open file. Off the server, I cannot double-click or even drag to the dock. Files open fine if I open the app first then browse to find the file.

    Hi,
Please try to reset the Internet Explorer settings or open Internet Explorer in In-Private browsing and then check if this issue occurs.
If the issue persists, please try to access SharePoint in another computer with Office 2013 and then check if this issue occurs. Or repair Office and restart your server.
Here is a blog about the same issue for you to take a look at:

    Hi:
It seemed to me that you put the wrong directory or drive when started the installation. It shows "error message: No such file or directory" when trying to locate the files.
You can try to verify your inputs during first phase of the installation.
    Hope this helps!

  • Undoing Open Office being the default program for text and other files

After problems with Power Point crashing down, I downloaded Open Office to save some files on my mac. thanks to Open Office I managed to save the content, but now Open Office seems to become default program to open word, ppt etc. files on my mac. How can I undo this?

Change it from the Open With section of a document's Get Info window, and then use the Change All function.

  • Enabling the ability to uncheck QT file associations in Default Programs

I have Windows 7 here, and it comes with this nice little utility that lets you set the default programs for various file types (Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Default Programs\Set Program Associations). When I select Quicktime, there are various boxes that I can check, but there are also various boxes that are pre-checked. I would like to uncheck them, but they are greyed out. How can I uncheck them?
I hope Apple engineers understand the absurdity of having a specific tool for setting file type associations, and them making that tool unable to set file type associations. It sort of defeats the purpose doesn't it?
For the record, I am administrator and UAC is disabled.

File associations are a mess right now. Many programs (Opera included) handle them their own way. There's a project underway to handle associations in a standard way (see MIME actions, shared MIME info, desktop entries, all at freedesktop.org), but not all software uses it; KDE is a notable holdout (3 at least, not sure about 4).
Note that that first spec link, MIME actions, is currently "in the requirements-gathering / early-planning stages." That means there is no spec for that. As I said, a mess.
Most likely, Opera and Thunderbird detected you were running KDE and special-cased their association-finder to ask KDE instead. Now that you aren't, they're falling back to their normal behavior: use the first .desktop file to claim the MIME type. As I recall, both applications offer ways to specify associations in their preferences; you might just want to stick to that for now. Or use a desktop environment.
The kernel-level MIME support is designed to allow execution of strange files using interpreters. For example, you could directly execute Windows applications (as in "./notepad.exe") by setting the kernel to "interpret" application/exe files using wine. No applications use it for opening files.

  • Open files directly to Photoshop CS6

I am using CS6. In the older versions I was able to open a 8 bit jpeg file directly to Photoshop (in this case I tried to open from desk top). Now I find that the "open with" dialog box only shows Bridge. That means I can only open the file via ACR. However when I do that my file change  to 16 bits. If I convert to 8 bit again, color become desaturated. I guess data had been compressed a few times. My question is how can I open my file to Photoshop directly without changing the bit depth?
    Thanks

    One way:
Right click on the jpeg, and select "choose default program" from the context menu.
If Photoshop is not listed, then use the Browse button to navigate to the Program Files (86) (32 bit) or Program files (64 bit) folder and choose the Photoshop.exe from the Adobe > Photoshop CS6 folder in order to add it.
Check the box "always open with this program"  click OK and it should always open with Photoshop.

  • Cant open files into PS CC

I have Adobe Bridge CC as well as Photoshop CC and Windows 8
Every since I did the switch i cant open my files into CC.
I,ve gone to preferences and tried to change file type extensions but all i get is an error message that says Windows cannot find C:\program files\adobe\adobe photoshop CS5.1(64bit)photoshop.exe. make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again.
This happens whether i try and double click or when i click on open with.
I havent had PS5 for a long long time so not sure why this happening.
Prior to this i had CE6 and everything worked beautifully,
How can i get Bridge to open my documents in the correct location?

What JJMack says, with the additional remark that it's not unusual for me to see the scratch file exceed 200 GB.  I also use Macs, but I don't go beyond Lion 10.7.5.
Here's some boilerplate text I use in this respect:
The rule of thumb I follow to figure out scratch space says to figure on 50 to 100 times the size of your largest file ever multiplied by the number of files you have open.  I have seen the scratch file exceed 800 GB once, an admittedly rare occurrence, but it often exceeds 200 GB when stitching large panoramas and the like.
As an example—and stressing that I'm aware that others have even more scratch space than I do—I keep two dedicated, physically separate hard drives as my primary and secondary Photoshop scratch disks and a lot of GB free on my boot drive for the OS.  I also have 16 GB of RAM installed.
Additionally, if you only have a single HD, i.e. your boot drive, you'd need it to be large enough to accommodate both the swap files of the OS as well as Photoshop's scratch.

When I click on a file that i want to open the following occurs:
"C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\.docx <e.g> coulnt open because the associate helping program doesnt exist. Change the association in your settings."
Im using Firefox and have 64 bit windows 7. I have office 2010 professional.
When I go to my temp file the document is there and from there it can be opened. The docx extension is already associated with word. What shall I do? I can however open som word documents (maybe later .docx versions perhaps).

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
