Cant open Indesign files unless opening through Bridge

We have just upgraded our PCs to CS5 & cannot open InDesign files unless we open them through Bridge, we have tried open with but this doesnt seem to work. Any suggestions? Illustrator & Photoshop are fine.

Sounds like an issue where either the folder you opened the last file from conventionally is no longer available or you do not have sufficient permissions to access it. The info on the last used folders/ files is retained by the programs and if something goes astray, that can cause this behavior. In any case, trashing the prefs to get rid of the wrongly stored paths might be enough, so try that. Simply move the files in C:\Users\[Your Name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\Version 7.0\en_US out of the way and let the program create new factory defaults.

  • Photoshop CS6 is crashing when being opened through Bridge

Crash report lists app name photoshop.exe AppVer 13.0.1.34 and ModName: gdiplus.dll
Basically I'm trying to open a .tif file through Bridge but Photoshop crashes each time.  I can open the image directly in Photoshop but my user wants to open through Bridge and this isn't working.  I've run all available updates, cleared the cache, etc. but no change in the symptom.

To clarify we're using XP SP3 (yes I know but I'm stuck with it for this issue) and the PC has 4Gb of DDR3 RAM, plenty hard drive space and no other issues.
I'm aware of what GDIplus is for but also know this isn't the problem because both applications open correctly seperately just not when double clicked within Bridge.
Tried a clean uninstall and reinstall.  The Application Manager then crapped out and made some tweaks in dcomcnfg.exe to widen the permissions of the System services which allowed that to run.  After the install and updates I could get the images to load in Photoshop but when I close Photoshop Bridge crashes... (same error about GDIplus)
Ran out of time today, but pretty sure it's not GDIplus causing the issue as I've checked the graphics drivers, updated them, etc. and no difference and the same .dll is faulting at a different stage.  Any advice gratefully received!

  • LR cant see xmp files unless opened as text file then saved.

Hello I have spent the entire day trying to solve this and I finally found a fix but not the cause. I have tried all the typical ways to sync/read/render to see the xmp data in LR. I spent 3 hours with tech support, and posted on several forums.
After all of this I found the only way for me to see the xmp data is to open the xmp as a text document then save it go into lightroom read metadata and it shows up. This obviously isnt a workable solution for thousands of files so I need to find a cause.
So a little info. I'm using LR5 on a windows. I edit clients images then send them the xmp files with those edits. I have one client thats photos when imported do not show metadata or develop adjustments. This is the only solution I have found to see the info. I believe they are using LR 4 and a MAC.
Is it possible that the problem is the original files are saved on a mac then transfered to my windows machine.
Please any help would be appreciated.

    Gotcha. Begging the question:
    A. is there a problem with the data.
    B. is there a problem in Lr
    C. both
If there was no operator error when posting the before/after files, then the answer is B.
Which file format (filename extension) did ya say?

  • Help.  I cant open the bridge in my computer

I have uninstalled reinstalled and nothing.  There is no error message and nothing is happening in the background.  It will not open.

apple's way is to use launchd, so crontabs may not be there by default.
just create one with crontab -e, as you would normally.

  • Cant send a file in Numbers through AOL or Yahoo

im trying to email a file that i have in numbers but it wont even let me click on the file when i go to attach it. what can i do, i need to send it tonight. the file was originally created in excel on a PC but i had no problem opening it in numbers. now when i am trying to email it it wont open. also, to be sure it wasnt just the file or AOL, i tried to send it in yahoo and that didnt work either. i also created another numbers document from scratch on my mac and that wont open either.
    help please!!

Numbers' files are actually folders called "packages." You need to zip (archive/compress) the "file" first then e-mail. The recipient must have Numbers to view the file.

  • Trigger action when file opens via bridge

Can something be done to trigger a photoshop action when a photoshop files are opened using the Load Files as Photoshop Layer command or using DR.Browns Services Place-A-Matic 8bit?
The Scripts Events Manager is unable to run an action or script when the photoshop file is opened through Bridge using the Load Files as Photoshop Layers or Dr. Brown's Place-A-Matic script.

Control will return to your function only after the copy is done so technically any code you place after the copy command will execute after the copy. But you should at least test to make sure the copy worked before you run off and start doing things about it.
    BOOL worked;
    worked = [[NSFileManager defaultManager] copyItemAtPath:[fromPathDirectory stringByExpandingTildeInPath] toPath:[toPathDirectory stringByExpandingTildeInPath] error:nil];
    if (worked) { //copy worked, execute code here}
    else { //copy failed - deal with error return code here.}

  • Switch Indesign file into Photoshop

How do i transfer a indesign file into photoshop. i thought you used bridge to do something like this but im not sure? ive tried placing the indesign file into photoshop using bridge but it says the open options are incorrect. help?

ive tried placing the indesign file into photoshop using bridge but it says the open options are incorrect.
To my knowledge this is not possible, you can't place a .indd (InDesign file type) in PS nor open a InDesign document in PS because it does not support it. What you can do is the other way round, you can use Bridge to place a photoshop document or image in to an InDesign document. Most user do this via the MiniBridge panel in ID.

  • I can open my new InDesign files by going up through the menu and opening that way, but when I try to just double click on an InDesign file I get error messages telling me that certain plugins aren't available.

I upgraded my Mac a few weeks ago to 10.10.2 Yosemite, and I joined the Adobe cloud so I could get access to all the new apps. I read a blurb somewhere about converting older InDesign files to the new CC version I'd have to open the old files in my old InDesign CS3, export to an ins file, then open that file in the new InDesign CC, then export it again to an idml file, then open that file and you shouldn't have any of the usual conversion problems. For the first few files I had to convert, it worked just fine. Now for some reason, whenever I try to open one of these converted files just by double-clicking on the file itself, I get an error message that says, "The document ____ uses one or more plug-ins which are currently not available on your system. Do you want to open anyway?" When I click OK, then I get another error message that says, "Cannot open ____. Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest versions, or upgrade to the latest version of Adobe InDesign." I thought this CC version of InDesign was the newest. Can somebody please tell me what gives with this? Any help will be very much appreciated.

Did you reinstall CS3 after CC?
For that matter, doing an in-place upgrade on the OS is always a gamble with Adobe programs. Reinstalling all the versions you need, in order, would probably solve your problem.
And you shouldn't need to save as IDML after opening the .inx in CC.

  • Cant open InDesign files from mac on pc

I am trying to open some InDesign files made on a mac on my pc but it does not work.
I have the latest version of InDesign on my pc computer.
    We have tried:
Open the mac files as they are.
Resave the mac files as old indesign format and open them on PC
Export from mac to IDML files and open those files on the pc.
Open the file on my pc as a "copy"
    Nothing works.
    I get the message:
Either the file does not exist, you do not have permission, or the file may be in use by another application.
Having a deadline for this project very very soon so really need to fix this. Any ideas out there?

I dont know what the orginal mac version is for this. And it will take some time to find out.
Can i see this somewhere? Could this make a difference?
    Use this: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/934429
Yes it makes a difference. First off, my script checks if it's indeed an InDesign file. If it is, it tells what version the file was created with (and recent versions of the script will also helpfully tell you what that means for you, i.e., whether or not you can open it with your version of inDesign).
Further check: nothing weird in the file name? Don't assume -- delete the original file name and type in something reasonable. There are lots of weird Mac symbols that may have hitched a ride along.
If that does not work: either post the file somewhere for us to look at (preferred), or open it with a hex editor and show us the first couple of bytes. This so we can verify what it is.

  • Hi when i open my application folder, all the application is shown in trash folder. when i click the application it says this app is in trash first move it out. and when i try to open through finder go it says this file doesn't exist. can some1 plz help?

hi when i open my application folder, all the application is shown in trash folder. when i click the application it says this app is in trash first move it out. and when i try to open through finder> go it says this file doesn't exist. can some1 plz help? how can i put all my application through application folder?

Something really odd is going on. In your first screen shot, I noticed that the Applications folder does not have the proper icon displayed in the side bar. Also, in the title bar it lists it as Applications 08-59-29-909.
Not sure where it's picking up that odd name, unless it's because it's still truly within the Trash folder.
Try this. In the Finder > Preferences > General > turn on "Always open folders in a new window". (I have a feeling you have the default setting with this off).
Now, in Finder > Go > move down and open the Applications Folder from there. Now open the folder where you see all your applications that you show in your screen shot, select all, and move them to this true appliactions folder.
This is what you should properly seeing (but with different apps listed):
See how the Applications folder has the icon of the letter A shaped with a pencil, ruler & pen.

  • Error Message when Double-clicking a CS4 InDesign File; Won't Open

I recently installed CS4, upgrading from CS2. Before installing CS4, I could double-click the icon for the file and it would open in InDesign CS2. After installing CS4, when I double-click an InDesign file icon, I get an error message that Windows cannot open the file and needs to know which program should be used. I check the "Select the program from a list" and a window opens that lists several of the applications I have installed. Neither InDesign versions are on the list, so I "Browse" to the Adobe folder in which both InDesigns reside. I then select a version (it doesn't matter which one; neither work) but then it doesn't appear in the list and my "selection" reverts to the "recommended" Photoshop CS4.
I can understand if this function has disappeared in CS4, and we now have to open a file using the "open" menu item, but I can't understand why neither verison "sticks" in the "Open With" window.
Any suggestions? I'm using Windows XP SP2.
    Thanks,
    Lloyd

That's what I thought. I tried the folder options association trick at http://forums.adobe.com/message/2864550#2864550, which kind of worked.  Now, when I double-click on an InDesign file icon, InDesign CS4 opens,  but the file does NOT open. Looks like I'll have to reinstall, unless  someone has an addition to the solution.
    Thanks!

  • When downloading, why do I get a message saying "Safari cant open file because the file has moved since it was downloaded?"  I just attempted to download the file from a website.  Thanks.

When downloading from a website, I get a message that says, "Safari cant open th file--- because the file has been moved since you downloaded it.  How do I correct this problem.  It wont let me open attachments from yahoo email either.  Thanks.

    EDIT:
After posting I see this question has the tag of "windows". I don't know if this applies to the Windows version or not.
The only time I see this message is if I download something, trash it, AND empty the trash. If I don't empty the trash, it finds it there. It will find it wherever I move it to, unless it is was in the trash and emptied.
Using Finder, is the downloaded file in your Downloads folder?
Maybe if you go to Safari/Preferences/General and change the location for downloads to something else then change it back to Downloads it might correct it.

  • InDesign CS3 crashes without error when opening any 2nd InDesign file

Issue: InDesign CS3 crashes without error and remains resident in memory if we have an InDesign file open and attempt to open a second InDesign file.
    OS: Win XP SP2
    InDesign Version: 5.0.2
Hardware: Dell Precision WorkStation T3400, 4 gigabytes of memory, Intel Core2 Quad processor Q6600
Details: No messages in the event viewer about the problem. We renamed the InDesign Defaults and the InDesign Saved Data file. We removed Creative Suite, restarted and then reinstalled Creative Suite (I could not remove and reinstall InDesign individually). We have created a new Windows profile for this user. I have one computer having the trouble. Other InDesign installations are working fine. This computer has 559 files in C:\windows\fonts. Other people that are not having the problem have a larger number of fonts installed.
The issue is not file specific. We are not running out of memory as I checked the task manager after the first InDesign document is open.
Why is opening a second document different than opening the first document?

    Hello Peter and Josh,
I'd just like to assert that I am having the exact same problem as Josh. I've spent the time to go through the steps listed above and have found the same results.
The issue as we see it multiple times daily is as follows:
    (1) User opens File1 (everything works fine)
    (2) User goes to open File2 (via explorer or via file->open) or print File1
    (3) The User Interface for ID disappears (InDesign.exe still appears in Task Manager and is NOT listed as "Not Responding", ID does not appear in the Task Bar)
    (4) The only way to continue work is to End Task/End Process InDesign.exe and relaunch.
No error messages appear, no error logs are created(that I can find). Non-related concerns caused us to upgrade this users PC. With a completely new install we are still having the problems. The systems are listed as follows:
OS: Win XP SP2 (fully updated minus SP3)
    InDesign Version: 5.0.2
Newest Hardware: Custom Built Computer, 4GB RAM installed (3.24 recognized by windows), Intel Core2 Quad processor Q6600 @ 2.4Ghz
OS: Win XP SP2 (fully updated minus SP3)
    InDesign Version: 5.0.2
Older Hardware: Custom Built Computer, Intel D945GTP Motherboard, 2GB RAM installed, Intel Pentium D processor @ 2.8Ghz
    Troubleshooting:
    (1) Alt+Space and M then using arrow keys moves every other window the user had opened other than In-Design. The user has two monitors. (a) 1280x1024 and (b) 1200x1600 (yes she uses the monitor rotated 90 degrees
    (2) Log files - Non exist in the C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS3 folder. I've also done a search across the entire hard drive for any "*.log" files, none of which were adobe related.
    (3) Default Printer - Changing the default printer to Adobe PDF is not really an option. I was able to convince the user to temporarily switch to a different networked printer and await the results (most likely today or tomorrow it should recreate)
    (4) /3GB switch - Getting that last 700 something MB of memory isn't an issue. I've run MemTest.exe on all the available system memory overnight in a "burn in" test. The system ran fine the sticks were nice and warm when I got in from all the hard work :)
    (5) Order of Opening - The problem repeates regardless of order. The trick seems to be opening File2 or printing File1 (I had the user only work on one file at a time (required her to close any open files before opening the next, that wasn't fun for my user but the system didn't crash on opening in this scenario, just on printing. Obviously not a permanent work around)
Any help here would be much appreciated as this has been plaguing us for months now.

  • Basic help required for multiple files to be opened from Bridge to PS

    Hi
I am attempting to shave off a few hours from my workflow and because I'm new to Bridge I'm unsure how to do this. I'm pretty sure anyone out there with a small working knowledge of Bridge or CS3 could help me.
I am attempting to open three instances of the same RAW file into CS3 from Bridge. The three instances, although the same image, need to go through CameraRaw and change the exposure. One normally exposed, one +2 exposure and one -2 exposure. As you may have worked out I am attempting a pseudo-hdr effect with the one RAW file.
How do I, with just one click, open the file three times, change the exposure each time, and then save the differently exposed files as tiffs?
If it's ImageProcessor that I need to use then I'll admit I can't quite work out the rules for doing this!
    Any help gratefully received.

  • Cant open files into PS CC

I have Adobe Bridge CC as well as Photoshop CC and Windows 8
Every since I did the switch i cant open my files into CC.
I,ve gone to preferences and tried to change file type extensions but all i get is an error message that says Windows cannot find C:\program files\adobe\adobe photoshop CS5.1(64bit)photoshop.exe. make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again.
This happens whether i try and double click or when i click on open with.
I havent had PS5 for a long long time so not sure why this happening.
Prior to this i had CE6 and everything worked beautifully,
How can i get Bridge to open my documents in the correct location?

What JJMack says, with the additional remark that it's not unusual for me to see the scratch file exceed 200 GB.  I also use Macs, but I don't go beyond Lion 10.7.5.
Here's some boilerplate text I use in this respect:
The rule of thumb I follow to figure out scratch space says to figure on 50 to 100 times the size of your largest file ever multiplied by the number of files you have open.  I have seen the scratch file exceed 800 GB once, an admittedly rare occurrence, but it often exceeds 200 GB when stitching large panoramas and the like.
As an example—and stressing that I'm aware that others have even more scratch space than I do—I keep two dedicated, physically separate hard drives as my primary and secondary Photoshop scratch disks and a lot of GB free on my boot drive for the OS.  I also have 16 GB of RAM installed.
Additionally, if you only have a single HD, i.e. your boot drive, you'd need it to be large enough to accommodate both the swap files of the OS as well as Photoshop's scratch.
