Cant open .mov file on 2011 iMac from 2007 iMac

I have a 2011 iMac and I am trying to open a .mov file that I had saved on my old 2007 iMac. When I try to open the file in QuickTime, from my Seagate external hard drive, the file will not play. It shows a thumbnail of the image in QuickTime but it does not give me the length of the file. When I press play it says that there is no length of the file (0.00) and just stops. Do I need to open it in a different media player or is the file possibly corrupted? Please Help!

I doubt there's good/any info in this file.
Any idea how long this mov was or what size?
A blank, totally black 32 KB movie here @ 320*240 is 7.61 seconds long.

Thanks for the suggestion! I don't use Phantasm or VectorScribe (or any Astute Graphics plugins for that matter). I do, however, have a Wacom tablet and have a few plugins that concern using Blurb Book Creator as well as LiveSurface Context.
I did the very unfortunate and foolish act of upgrading to Maverick without a backup, so postponing isn't an option for me.
I geuss my question at this point would be, would it be worthwhile to wipe all the adobe products from my harddrive and re-install them? Or would that be a useless endeavor.
I don't have an external hard-drive so backing up and re-installing the entire OS would be a bit much. Any suggestions?

Can't open movie files in browser or email

Hi, I'm not sure if this issue has been dealt with yet; however, I can't open movie files contained in emails or in my Safari Browser--even ones labeled as QT files. I am running Quick Time 7.0.4 on my 10.3.9 eMac. This is a recent problem, as I didn't have this difficulty until the last month or so. I had unchecked the "Open Safe Files" box in Safari's preferences some time ago as a precaution against a virus/worm, but rechecked it after the last one or two Security Updates. What else should I do to resume opening movie files? QT Player runs just fine with movie trailers, etc, but not in mails or the browser.

Under the Safari Help menu choose "Installed Plug-ins". This will confirm your QuickTime install.
Under Safari Preferences/Security make sure you've got plug-ins enabled.
Try dragging the email attachment to the Desktop and see if it plays from there.

Can't open mov files on my ipad

Since one of the last IOS updates, I can't open Mov files sent from my own IPhone via email.
I have had a new ipad swapped under warranty, and have reloaded all software from scratch.
When I get the email with the video file. The file is an attachment, I click the file, it downloads, then when I click it to view the video I get a white screen with the file name in the middle and the words quick time movie. And nothing happens

You should download VLC and try viewing the .mov file with it - for troubleshooting.

Why can't I open .webloc files on my iMac 10.6.8?

I want to open files which have the extension <.webloc>. The file reaches my iMac but I can't read it, it stays blank and just sits on my desktop. I'm not sure but I think when I open 'Spotify' that has a <.webloc.> extension!

Well, I'm partially wrong in my statement. .webloc files do contain data in the data fork and the resource fork. From the Terminal.app you can read both forks. Let's list both forks in a .webloc file that is linked to this thread->

thanks for the suggestions weather15 - the firefox help site you directed me to explains what ought to happen but i cant make it work. I shut my firefox browser on my new machine and attach the hard drive from my old machine. I can explore the contents of that drive but when i search it for the suggested folder " %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\" nothing is found. when i try and open firefox from the old drive, the browser opens that is the new version that i have on my new computer with no saved bookmarks! Am I doing everything right?

Is it only ones you have downloaded? What about for example the ones that came with your iMac - you didn't give a model but mine has a folder "User Guides and Information" that has a number of pdfs. Spotlight should find it for you.

does this program not do it? I have over 560 pictures from a wedding that i cant open. they were taken with a canon camera by a relative and would love to view them! also whenever i click on organize it shuts down pse 8. i'm so fed up with this program already and i just got it today! help!

An xmp file is not an image. Usually those are the files containing the settings used for raw conversion, any metadata keywords, and other data that PS/PSE can't write to the files themselves. If those really are all the files on your disc, contact the photographer, because it sounds like someone made a mistake.

Cant open a file made with older aftereffects

i just downloaded this file from the internet it is a aftereffects template. i downloaded the aep file and tried opening with AE cs6. it said that it cant open cuz its made with a old version of AE. I am pretty sure that it should have backwards compatibility, i mean i would understand if CS4 cant open CS6 file. but if CS6 cant open CS4 file that's weird, and i am really confused.

Are you sure the file is CS4 and not AE4. CS6, according to the documentation CS6 can open AE7 and newer files.
The file could also be corrupted.

Cant open ANY file with Pages 3.0.2 (iWork'08)

I cant open any file, not even a blank document. When I try to start a new document, I get the message:"The template “Blank.template” could not be opened." This happens with ALL templates (obviously the name of the template changes to that being tried to open).
Interesting enough is that Pages do not crash, as the menu bar on top is available.
Trying to open an existing document doesn't work also, as after selecting it and clicking OK, the browsing window closes but the file does not open.
This only happens with my account (administrator level). I've tried deleting the "com.apple.iWork.Pages.plist" file from MyAccount/library/preferences (moving it to Trash) but still the same.
Please HELP My operating system is 10.5.6

In your own account, the unique preferences file directly related to Pages is:
<startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:com.apple.iWork.Pages.pl ist
There is no reason to remove any other one.
But, before removing it, go to the Preferences menu item to check which is defined as the default template in your own preferences.
I am tired so I will switch off soon.

Apropos Rick's messages, the IB error you reported is most often caused by an installation or version problem. This often happens when a new SDK is installed over an older SDK, and is often fixed by removing as much of the previous SDK as possible before re-installing the new one. If you search on the text of your error message in this forum and/or Google, you'll find lots of advice on how to clean your system before installing a new SDK.

I'm also wondering what book you have. You said your book was titled "Beginning ipod development". I can't find that title on the net, so you probably didn't type the exact title. However if that is indeed to title of your book, it might be too old. So if the book came with a CD, you could have some xib files that are too old for your SDK.
If the above doesn't apply to you, then take Rick's suggestion and get the latest SDK from the iPhone Dev Center. Then you'll need to clean your system to get rid of the previous SDK. Do this even if the previous SDK is the same one you just downloaded, because that's the best way to fix a bad installation. You should also consult the other posts on this subject that discuss permission problems. For example I think you could get IB to fail by installing as one user and then opening IB as another user.
In any case, if you re-install, there's one step you must never omit: Rename your /Developer folder (e.g. to /OldDev).
